I didn't say that exiv2 was dead. Right now, as far as I understand,
exiv2 is in limbo.

What usually happens is either:

1. somebody steps up
2. some active project decides to incorporate it and dedicate
resources to keep it alive
3. let it wither on the vine

Currently, neither alternative 1 or 2 has happened after almost a
year of Robin Mills announcing his retirement.

Which is why I asked:

a: How will this affect DT?
b: Supplementary question: Would exiftool be an alternative for DT?

Thank you

Because of several comments and the general tone of the posts by Robin
Mills (and some of the current contributors to exiv2) on PIXLS.US during
the last year, which I won't link here. The two linked discussions were
meant to show that there are people working on exiv2, and that although
Robin's retirement will be a huge loss for the project, it doesn't mean
exiv2 is dead.

I don't see why you conclude the exiv2 project is safe. After a full month of
appeals there is still no maintainer announced in the first thread you link to,
nor on the web site, nor on the github site.

All are shown as being for v3.4. So how is one to know which of
these five is the most current, leading edge document, but not the
bleeding edge (development) version?  One could very easily become
confused by the plethora of literature?

if you looked at them, surely you noticed a difference. use the one that

should be very easy to make that choice.

Since they both say 3.4, and in fact *are* for 3.4, the question was
valid and the answer was just as wrong as arrogant.
https://darktable.gitlab.io/doc/en/index.html is 'old' in the sense
that it's the updated version of the 'old style' manual. Nevertheless,
it has been updated for 3.4, but is the last such update. It is
available in multiple languages.
https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/ is the new version, and that
is the format that will be used in the future. It has fewer
screenshots (which tend to change often, and are therefore hard to
maintain).
Finally,https://darktable-org.github.io/dtdocs/ is, as far as I know,
the latest and greatest, updated for the development version (even
though its version number still says 3.4). It's automatically
generated fromhttps://github.com/darktable-org/dtdocs
The latter two are currently available only in English.
