Re: [darktable-user] Not seeing replies to my posts

2021-02-22 Thread Bill Martz
I receive posts from others, and replies to those posts:

I am using Firefox and Gmail. I have no filters with dark anything in them.
Nothing from the user list has ever ended up in Spam.

Because of the peculiar behavior I have experienced, I thought you had to
Reply All in order for the person you were replying to to see the reply. I
apologize.

[darktable-user] Not seeing replies to my posts

2021-02-22 Thread Bill Martz
This has been going on for quite a while, and fortunately I have gotten
answers anyway:

When I send an email to the users list, the only replies I see are when
someone replies to someone else's initial reply to my post. For example,

Patrick Shanahan apparently replied to my post, Open/Close Behavior of
darkroom Left Hand Modules, but I didn't receive it. When Juan Navarro
replied to Patrick's reply, I received that.

I see replies by Patrick to other people's posts all the time, so I don't
understand why it doesn't work for me. As far as I can tell, I am seeing
everyone else's posts and all the replies to them.

Is anyone able to give me a fix for this issue?

Bill Martz

P.S. If you would include this address in your reply, I hope to be able to
see it:

[darktable-user] Open/Close Behavior of darkroom Left Hand Modules

2021-02-21 Thread Bill Martz
I am running darktable-3.5.0+1034~g530a4808b-win64.exe on Win 10; I was
running darktable-3.5.0+1170~gb428b0d7f-win64.exe earlier today. Up until
now, when I opened a module on the left side in darkroom, it stayed open
when I opened any other module. Earlier today, I closed an image out of
darkroom, picked another in lighttable, and opened it in darkroom. At that
point, I could only open one module on the left-hand side at a time. This
evening, I installed the newer version, but the problem remains. I didn't
change anything in settings; I don't even see anything in settings that
controls this. Can anyone help me get the old behavior back?

put my favorites in there. Trying to explain in detail what to do would be

[darktable-user] Copy and paste stop working while dt3.3 is running

2020-10-13 Thread Bill Martz
I am using darktable-3.3.0+1057~g92fae0e6c-win64.exe, a dev build for
Windows 10. Every so often, I lose the ability to copy or paste in other
applications. I also use a clipboard app called Clibor. Since I run that
all the time I don't know if that plays a part in this. To fix the problem,
I close and open dt.

[darktable-user] Update files upon opening does not update

2020-10-06 Thread Bill Martz
 Running Windows 10, dt 3.2.1

Upon opening dt, the dialog box appears to update the database. I select
all files and update. After a short time, the files disappear from the
dialog box, and I click close. The next time I open dt, the same files
appear to be updated.

I have tried updating and immediately closing dt. Upon opening, the same
thing happens. Every now and then, the stars align, and when I open, some
new files are listed. Then the game begins all over again.

If you compress the history stack, it will update your xmp file. If you
don't want to compress, I believe the only way is to go to lighttable.

Try moving channel mixer above filmic rgb in the list on the right side.
Ctrl+Shft+right click on channel mixer module. Then move up the list. I
sometimes have trouble getting it to land exactly where I want it to be, so
if it is not where you want it, move it again.

Re: [darktable-user] Channel mixer

2020-09-02 Thread Bill Martz
The channel mixer in dt, as it is in Raw Therapee and GIMP, is a GUI. What
you need to understand is mixing. Here's a video that has the use of
channel mixer at the beginning of the editing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUP1TxVeL44

Here's a guide that I developed to help me understand what happens:

*Red channel*:

Increase green slider, which increases red where there is green and
therefore *the hue shifts to* *yellow* until you get to blue, and then *the
hue shifts to* *magenta*.

Decrease green slider, which decreases red where there is yellow and
therefore *increases* *green*.

Increase blue slider, which increases red where there is blue and
therefore *the
hue shifts to* *magenta* until you get to green, and then *the hue shifts
to* *yellow*.

Decrease blue slider, which decreases red where there is magenta and
therefore *increases* *blue*.

Increase red slider, and *the hue shifts to* *yellow* where there is green
mixed with red and *the hue shifts to* *magenta* where there is blue mixed
with red.

Decrease red slider, which decreases red and *increases* *green* where
there is cyan and *increases* *blue* where there is magenta.

*Green channel*:

Increase red slider, which increases green where there is red and
therefore *the
hue shifts to* *yellow* until you get to blue, and then *the hue shifts to*

[darktable-user] Titles don't appear in image information

2020-08-11 Thread Bill Martz
Windows 10, dt 3.2.1.

I usually name my duplicates, but the names are not showing up in the Title
slot in the image information display. As a first step to attempt to fix
it, I uninstalled and reinstalled dt, but it still doesn't work. What is
strange is that I manually created a second installation, and when I run
that one, the titles do appear.

Re: [darktable-user] Loss of folder usage history after crashes

2020-08-08 Thread Bill Martz
Thanks, Patrick, but I am already writing the xmps. What I meant was dt
crashes. This was the first time in a long time, but I hadn't closed it for
days, and all the importing I had done was lost. Lost in the sense that I
had to import each folder again, and then close dt so the importing would
stay in the database. I don't understand that dt doesn't write to the
database upon import. After a crash, when I open dt it displays the
contents of the folder that was open the last time I closed dt. All other
importing history is lost.

[darktable-user] Loss of folder usage history after crashes

2020-08-08 Thread Bill Martz
Windows 10, dt 3.0.2 and V4 dev. version

Crashes have been nonexistent more recently, and I have gotten out of the
habit of closing dt after importing folders/files. Earlier today dt V4 dev
crashed, and the importing history covering several folders was lost. Is
there some way to get this information written into the database without
having to close dt?

I don't see an answer to your question yet, so here's a demo from your
Black Printing Problem post:

[darktable-user] Bug report: Combined drawn and parametric mask not working in Windows V4 dev. version

2020-07-30 Thread Bill Martz
I tried to see if this was reported on Github, but did not find it. Using
the raw image, P1120111.ORF, which can be downloaded at
https://discuss.pixls.us/t/new-to-raw-hate-my-results-so-far/17486, I tried
to mask everything but the sky in color balance using a drawn/parametric
mask combination. Selecting on H, hue, the setting for input was negative
polarity, 0, 0, 197, 197. I then added a path mask around the portion of
the lake that remained unselected, polarity positive. The area within the
path remained unselected. This same setup does work in dt 3.0.2. Has
anyone else experienced this issue?

Re: [darktable-user] Camera calibration profiles

2020-07-24 Thread Bill Martz
What I was indicating was that for a beginner, it is tempting to think that
a good starting point is the jpg, but as I explained, that's not what dt is
designed for, nor what users want.

Re: [darktable-user] Camera calibration profiles

2020-07-24 Thread Bill Martz
It's very tempting to want to start with the jpg setup and modify from
there. Using the basecurve is as close as darktable will come for a raw.
You can always convert a jpg to a tif and edit that, but you are starting
with all the changes made to produce the jpg and cannot get back to what
was originally there.

darktable is used by people that want total creative freedom, and it is
designed to provide this while being accurate in making color changes
without mathematical distortions. Much work has been done to convert to
linear RGB by the developers. I suggest you search Pixil for Aurélien
Pierre, aurelienpierre, and read his latest posts. Also study Play Raw
posts, where you can download image files and the xmp files produced by
multiple posters and examine them. Boris Hajdukovic, s7habo, has produced a
ton of videos on editing with darktable. And so have many others. The whole
idea is to produce something better than the jpg.

[darktable-user] Crashes when opening other's xmps

2020-06-18 Thread Bill Martz
Sometimes when I attempt to use an xmp from a Play Raw dt crashes. I use
Windows, and I gather those xmps are from developmental versions of dt.
Does anyone else experience this? Is there something that can be done to
stop the crashes?
