Re: [darktable-user] Highlight Details
Thanks Bill, thats much better than I've been able to achieve with dt. I clearly need to spend time learning how to use the highlight reconstruction module! Before posting the inevitable Lightroom comparison, let me say that I really don't like using that software. I have a long list of complaints, most of which are well addressed by darktable. I've been using darktable on my home linux machine for quite some time, and have been pleased with the results. Then along came the windows version of dt. Great, I thought, I can now use the same image processing software on my windows laptop and my linux desktop. And so it was. But of course it was now all too easy to compare results on my laptop between the two programs. It was then that I started to notice that Lightroom does do a better job of highlight recovery than darktable. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1o1q6xpj6pba2s7/Lightroom_final.jpg?dl=0 As I've mentioned before, I'm very conscious of the fact that dt is a gift from the developers, who obviously take a lot of pride in their work. So this should not be taken as a 'complaint', more a suggestion for improvements. Hope this isn't all TLDR! At risk of complicating this discussion, I processed an over-exposed RAW file in darktable and Lightroom. In both cases, I pulled the exposure back by 2ev. No other tweaks. Re: [darktable-user] Highlight Details
And, 'for the sake of science', I downloaded the .dng and opened it in Lr and dt. The histograms are quite different, even allowing for log vs linear on the y-axes. Lr shows a bunch of high intensity pixels on the far right hand side; these are missing in dt. This is before applying any sliders. Again, I have seen similar results on several other images. Re: [darktable-user] Highlight Details
I've seen similar results to Chris. One of the (few) things that I've found Lightroom does better than darktable is highlight recovery. I have noticed that the darktable histogram doesn't seem to show content at the far right hand side that does show in the Lightroom histogram. Don't know if this is relevant. I hesitate to mention this, since I'm very conscious of the fact that darktable is entirely created by people working on their own time. It seems ungrateful to pick out one thing that isn't perhaps as good as with other paid programs. Well, that's strange. I did as you suggest: removed an image and then reimported it. And, yes, the edits duly appeared. Then I tried another image, but before removing it, I noticed that the edits were there. And checked some other imported folders, all the edits appear. I had closed and restarted dt a few times since first noticing the problem, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. In any case, the problem seems to have gone away. Thanks for your help on this -- and all the help you have given others on this list! then guessing, you still have the original library.db. open dt and remove the image you want to import then import it again see if it shows the edits dt should read anew the xmp file for an image that is not in it's db darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org

The higher the ISO, I start adding things like demosiac, hot pixels, lowpass. I vary the mostly the opacity on the profile denoise, increasing it as the ISO increases. I usually shoot in manual, so all my exposures are pretty much the same. I denoise one image, then copy the history stack and paste it to the rest of the images. If I was changing exposure settings, then I denoise one image per group, and copy the history stack to the rest of the group. Re: [darktable-user] Re: Problem when I open raw files to edit on DARKTABLE
I see Jean-Luc has made a couple of interesting posts. All I have to add is that I opened your .CR2 file, and I do see the same effects that you observe. This is on 2.4.1, Linux Mint 18.3. I also opened the file using Lightroom, and again saw an initial image much darker than the .jpeg, with some noise. I was able to match the jpeg pretty well by increasing exposure, reducing highlights, and tweaking levels. And profiled denoise did an excellent job, as Jean-Luc observed. In the past, several people have pointed out that the raw files are just a starting point, and you wouldn't necessarily expect them to match the jpeg. But I will say that I find it convenient if they do look very similar, especially if the in-camera jpeg processing is good. Re: [darktable-user] Surface pen for creating drawn masks
Answering my own question ... Of course, it's left click that used to define control points for the 'path' shape. And the pen doesn't do left click. It does work with the brush, circle and ellipse shapes, although I don't see any way to alter sizes without a keyboard or mouse wheel. My tentative conclusion is that the Microsoft Surface pen is only of marginal use with darktable. I'd be happy for someone to point out why I'm wrong! I have a Microsoft Surface pen that no longer pairs properly. But it does still work as a pointing device, and the right-click button opens folders, etc., as I would expect. However, when I try to use the pen to define a drawn mask, right-click doesn't define control points. I'm wondering if this is something I should expect to work? Perhaps the fact that the pen does not pair is a problem? Hi Kofa, Thanks for mentioning the base curve blending feature in your reply to François. I was unaware that it existed, but it seems like a very useful way to compress overall contrast. In case anyone else is puzzled, as I was, base curve blending isn't included in 2.2.5. At least, I don't see it on my installation. It does show up on the Windows build, 2.3.0.
