[darktable-user] Filmic dynamic range changes when moving grey
$ git describe release-3.0.0-291-gd0b1edd12 Hi, I don't get it. “filmic rgb”, “scene”: From my understanding of a video [1] by Aurélien, “white relative exposure” (wre) and “black relative exposure” (bre) set how far the the black and white points in my input's dynamic range are away from the point I've chosen as “middle grey luminance” (mgl). If they were set to, e.g., wre = 4.33 EV bre = -8.47 EV then the dynamic range into which my input is embedded would span wre - bre= 12.8 EV because black is 8.47 EV *below* grey (hence negative), and white is 4.33 EV above, spanning 12.8 EV. Now when I move mgl slider, the total dynamic range should stay the same (he said something about the relative values being adopted). But they don't! I've got, only by changing mgl, wre = 2.89 EV bre = -7.03 EV which give a reduced total dynamic range of wre - bre = 9.92 EV However, the alert reader may have noticed that the *sum* of wre and bre is of course the same 4.33 EV - 8.47 EV = -4.14 EV = 2.89 EV - 7.03 EV But this sum does not mean anything, or does it? My understanding of this may very well be seriously fucked up, or there might be a sign error in “filmic” (that nobody has noticed?!). Can anyone explain this? [darktable-user] 3.0 config questions
Hi, lhanks for making it possible to change the CSS during runtime. Thanks for making the highlighting of selected text more visible! Thanks for providing a lighter theme! Wooho! I can change the width of the side panels by dragging! But I also have some questions regarding the new version: -1- How can I diasble the arrows and the small strip at the edges of the monitor? I still have $ grep panels_collapse_controls ~/.config/darktable/darktablerc darkroom/ui/panels_collapse_controls=FALSE lighttable/ui/panels_collapse_controls=FALSE but that seems to be ignored in version 3.0. I can switch them off by pressing B, but after a restart they're back again. -2- I have Ctrl+Down bound to toggle the bottom panel. But it now seems not to toggle a panel, but instead cycle through all different configurations. Same for the top panel. I like the old way better, I find it more predictable how often I have to press a button to see something, or to see nothing. Like Ctrl+F predictably switching the film stip on or off, or Ctrl+H for the header. Can I have real toggling back plz? Btw: Clicking on the panel controls (the frame areas with the arrows) sometimes does nothing. I have to move the mouse a little to se an effect. This has been there with the old version as well. -3- The thumbnails have a gradient at the bottom edge. I assume that's defined in the CSS files, but I could not find it. Can I disable this? I prefer the more flat look. [darktable-user] rgb curve or tone curve
Hi, does anyone here know what the actual status of the "tone curve" vs. the "rgb curve" modules is? I was not aware of the existence of the latter, I've always only used "tone curve". Was that wrong? Which one is better? I'm asking, because "tone curve" seems to be buggy now [1], and it was suggested to switch to "rgb curve" instead. What would that mean for all the images I've processed that have "tone curve" settings in their stack? [darktable-user] Darktable steals focus
Hi, when DT 2.3.0 is done exporting images, it brings itself to the foreground if its window does not have the focus. Can I disable this? Rationale: Ususally I start other work while DT is exporting. When it grabs the focus it will interpret all my keystrokes, e.g., changing all image ratings when I'm typing in numbers or `r`. $ darktable --version this is darktable 2.3.0+422~g0b4217d0d Thanks Stefan -- http://stefan-klinger.de o/X Send plain text messages only, not exceeding 32kB./\/ \ darktable user mailing list to unsubscribe send a mail to darktable-user+unsubscr...@lists.darktable.org
[darktable-user] what graphics card to get?
Hello, what graphics card to get for using Darktable with OpenCL under Linux? I already have an Asus M5A97 evo R2 mainboard, with an PCIe 2.0 x16 slot for the graphics card. I want to stay in the price range below 200€. I do not play games, nor do I use 3D graphics software of any kind. Darktable will be the most demanding task for this piece of hardware. The Darktable manual mentions a minimum of 1GB of graphics memory to be sufficient [1]. Is this up-to-date information? Does DT benefit from more more? How much more? There seem to be different versions of OpenCL [2]. Is that an issue when deciding which card to buy? What does Darktable need here? NVidia graphics cards seem to differ in “compute ability”, which seems to be the CUDA version [3] they support. What is required here for Darktable? Is there something similar to look out for with AMD Radeon cards? The manual [4] mentions “recent” AMD Radeon HD7xxx to work out of the box. According to Wikipedia [5] that series was introduced in 2011 and had its latest update in 2013. Also, it seems to be difficult to buy any of these now (I don't want to buy used hardware). Is there more current information available? Does anyone have information on / experience with Radeon R7 or similar (i.e., GCN family of cards [6])? They seem to be available for under 100€ currently [7]. A list of NVidia GPUs with CUDA-support (I guess that's required for OpenCL on NVidia) is here [10]. Most graphics cards I've seen are not actually built by AMD or NVidia, but rather by 3rd party manufacturers (MSI, ASUS, Palit, Zotac, Gainward, Gigabyte, PNY, ...) using their GPUs. Is there any particularly good / bad one to choose? What else to pay attention to? Thanks for helping Stefan BTW: The link “darktable user mailing list” [8] on [9] is outdated. [darktable-user] replicate / invert optical filter
Hi, I have two questions regarding optical Filters: (1) My ND-Filter creates a slight color cast, which I would like to undo semi-automatically: The recipe I have in mind would be to take two pictures of a white surface, once with and once without the optical filter in place. Using the same light source and camera WB, but different exposure to compensate for brightness, the difference between the two pictures should express the unwanted color cast. Can DT use this to calculate an inverse filter? (2) Similar Problem, in the other direction: Sometimes I see landscape through sunglasses, and it looks nicer than without. Can I dell DT to replicate the effect of my sunglasses? The recipe would be similar as above: Take two shots of a defined white surface, once directly, once through the glasses. The difference between the two pictures should be used to derive a filter function that adds the “sunglasses effect” in post processing. [darktable-user] Copy apparent exposure level
Hi, I've got a number of shots from the same scenery, with slight differences in brightness (due to slight fluctuations of the illumination). It's not much, but enough to be apparent whenn seen side by side, or (worse) zapping through them. Now I want to correct exposure, so that they all appear with the same brightness. Obviously I cannot perform the same amount of exposure compensation to all of them. How could I achieve that? Another question: Can I spot-meter on the image? I.e., select an area and tell darktable to make it as bright as if I had spot-metered this as middle grey?
