[Debconf-discuss] Openmoko Buzz Fix Party ticket.

2009-06-30 Thread David Reyes Samblas Martinez
Some various has asked me why the need of registration for the ticket
of the Buzz fix party,
There are 2 main reasons,
The first one is because the fix is not instantaneous, is about half
an hour per phone, so having a prevision on how many phones to be
reapaired that day will give us a good idea of the stress level our
"Iron man" will have to suffer, how many beer, an how many peanuts we
will have to bring :)

The second is I have to report back the serial numbers and country of
the repaired phones to Openmoko Inc, having this info will save to
have to take it by hand or at least we will have a printed grid to
take note of that serial number .

Nothing more nothing less, no other obscure intention than add a
little bit of organization before the party.

Those who wants to still want to fix their neos please register at ,

I asked yesterday via the Tuxbrain contact form, but I think it could be
useful for other as well, thus asking here again.

I have a Tuxbrain account for the "normal" shop, and it seems that this
account does not work for the DebConf shop: is it normal? I would
prefer not to be obliged to create yet another account (moreover for the
same shop), but it seems this is the only option. Am I right?

Good point.

I do not understand this one. What has Openmoko Inc. to do here? I
mean, AFAIK there was no official announcement from Openmoko Inc. about
fixing every smartphone they have sold, thus I do not see why they want
the S/N of the repaired devices.

This raises another question: I did not buy my FR from Tuxbrain, but
From Pulster.de (one year ago it was more or less the only European
distributor), thus my warranty "depends" on Pulster.de. However, if
Openmoko Inc. wants to know that my device has been repaired for the
buzz problem, does this mean that my warranty is still valid?

NB, I do not care about my warranty and I want a buzz fixed smartphone
instead ;-)

Thx, bye,

Openmoko supports those fix parties founding costs of organization
(trip, material, technician work. beer ... ) and assure replacement in
case of a unit is ruined during the fixing process, that's why OM inc.
wants to know how many and what units has been fixed (again just a bit
of control to keep things in order)

Regarding replacement l I have to say our Iron man has more than 70
repaired units experience and only two had to be replaced at the buzz
fix party in Barcelona at the very beginning, but if it happens again
in the Debconf it will be automatically replaced by a new unit with
fix already applied and tested.

We only cover warranty for the fix, but ask Chris Pulster directly
about it, and remember to say that Tuxbrain are who are applying the
fix , He is a very friendly distributor and we have a very good
relation.

You and Victor have both failed to confirm you plan to attend. Rafael
has done so, but as he doesn't turn up on the list of people who'd
reconfirmed at the point the deadline passed I assume this has been done
since.

I'm not sure, but I guess this is so TuxBrain can be "reimbursed"
somehow by OpenMoko of those fixes (sending free batteries or other
material)...

My guess may be totally wrong.

Well , whe have added a lot of new fuctionalities to the normal shop

shop and deal with this(not when the offer was annonced sorry) so I

If you're not on:

http://the.earth.li/~noodles/dc9-rooms-draft-1

and haven't contacted me about the fact already (I'm part way through
draft 2 which factors in those people I've confirmed with over the past
week) then you should worry, yes. And email ro...@debconf.org to try and
get things sorted.

You're on the list, so you're ok. Some reasons people might not be on
the list:

 * Hadn't reconfirmed attendance in time.
 * No valid dates in time.
 * Selected "I will arrange my own accommodation" rather than "Regular
   room"

It's going to make dinners a bit less relaxed if people start to tick
boxes after having asked me a few standard questions. I'd always be left
wondering if people were actually interested in knowing what I do, or if
they were just trying to have a >2min conversation in order to tick a
box, but in fact they couldn't care less.

But yes, in a nerdy way, we might actually surprisingly be able to get
over that. As an Italian who's used to relax during meals and have
pleasant conversations, it kind of feels awkward.

So, I don't use my FreeRunner for phoning (yet) but I may do in the
future. As such, I have no idea whether it has the buzz bug or not.

If it does, I'd like to take advantage of this opportunity to get it
fixed, so that later when I decide to use it for phone calls, I'll be
fine.

If it does not, I don't want to make you waste time.

Should I register anyway, and then worse case you'll have a look at it,
say "this one's fine" and then just take a break?

Or is there a bulletproof way to discover whether the bug is there or
not without actually making phone calls while walking towards a mast?

My hope is that people will have a 2 minute conversation with a goal
of ticking the boxes, and then get interested, and spend the rest of
the meal having a pleasant conversation that they actually care about
with people who they haven't interacted with in meatspace before.

There's always going to be some social awkwardness, but I think it'd
be there even if you were just trying to make conversation with people
you didn't know well without the goal of signing keys.

Ah, now that you say "then ... spend the rest of the meal" I realize
that my inner image was the other way round: first dinner and then,
during/after dessert the "box ticking"; as an option for those who
like, as in "mmmh, the food was good, now who takes a coffee or some
key signing?"

Would that feel less strange for our South and North Italians?

Just for the record: We are planning to submit one bid to have DebConf11
in Germany. We currently consider multiple options and will provide some
more information during the DC11 session at DC9, but a final decision
which one we will let free to stand against the possible others will be
taken later this year.

Oh, please - have you ever seen such a sensible German? Didn't think
so.

Yup - The protocol might be "checkbox ticking after dessert". Of
course, some people will jump the protocol - but we can strongly
prefer so. And of course, if I have already exchanged signatures with
you, that won't stop me from sharing dinner again.
