I'm driving to FrOSCon tomorrow, but neither Richi nor me found a tree

Yep, that's what Europeans (wenn, at least Germans) think of if they
hear the word "wasp". And
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_honey_bee is what they think of
if they hear the word "bee".

They're very easy to distinguish:

* Wasps have no hairy body.
* Wasps also care about meat.
* Wasps don't sit on flowers.
* Wasps have a very tight and clearly visible taille.
* Wasps have clearly visible mandibles.

(And it's well known locally that there is a wasp plague in at least
Baden-Württemberg this summer.)

Maybe north american bees look more like (our) wasps. No idea why else
Steve thought that those are bees.

But joining you for a bicycle trip also depends on the expected

[Debconf-discuss] Missing Cisco WLAN Access Point since teardown

2013-08-27 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi,

since there was no success on the debconf-team mailing list with the
following request, I'm resending this (with some updated facts) to
debconf-discuss in the hope that some of the people who helped during
teardown on Sunday morning read this mailing list.

The ISP is missing the one Cisco access point which they setup at the
beginning of DebConf to better cover the amount of clients in the main
talk room. They set it up in the lower dining room which we used
during DebCamp and on the last day (teardown Sunday), on the floor
right of the door towards toilettes and BoF room 1.

The missing access point is a Cisco Aironet 1242G, of grey colour and
has two external antennas. It looks like this:
https://trakmax2.nuspire.com/images/ProviderProducts/1242bundle.jpg

During lunch on teardown Sunday I noticed that there's a cable with no
device plugged into the wall socket in the dining room and fetched it.
So the AP was already missing at that time. Others have reported that
the AP may have missed already at 10am.

Anyone knows where the missing AP has been put to during teardown?

Kind regards, Axel

There is an "official" work flow for this, but it's not yet widely
used, maybe because it's not too obvious.

I've used it only once so far and are not really used to it yet and
can't reproduce it by mind.

As far as I understood it, it works as follows:

* You add upstream's git repo as a remote.
* When importing a new upstream tar ball (yes, you still have to do
that), you can pass the according upstream commit/tag as an option
to git-import-orig and it will make that commit an additional merge
parent, but without actually using code from that commit/branch --
just as a pointer. (So either I didn't get it right or it's really
  that unintuitive.)

Oh, Bromptons can come in many color combinations.

You can actually choose the color of the frame and the color of the
forks completely independently, even it the combination would be
totally ugly: http://www.brompton.de/kalkulator/index.php

(Unfortunately the shown images always show the whole Brompton in the
color, you can test how ugly a combination would be. ;-)

I just checked for bicycle shops and similar things around Vaumarcus.
There seem to be several ones in Colombier and Corcelles:

And one in Grandson:

Not sure if my French is good enough, but I found no hints about
rentals on either site.

And a bunch in Yverdon:

At least one of them also does bicycle rental:

HTH for a beginning.

If you, like me, already have a similar Victorinox knife with the same
size of plastic caps but with more or other tools than the two offered
models, and wondered if you can exchange those caps against the Debian
branded one:

Yes it should be possible.

There is a German written howto at
http://www.messerjoker.com/PDF/griffschalen.pdf which explains how to
exchange the plastic caps. If others are interested, too, I can
translate that howto into English. (Found via the also German forum
thread at http://www.messerforum.net/showthread.php?t=63270.)

A picture of the plastic caps not yet mounted is

I fear that, too, and it would be very sad and quite a loss for
DebConf, especially also for those who couldn't attend.

Yeah, and nearly all photos with people on it are very innocent. And
for those few which are not, asking the people on the picture is not a

It's fully understandable that people want to get some sleep, but as
your yelling was far louder than all of us together, I'd expect that
it made things just worse for others which may have been able to sleep
with the previous level of noise but woke up at that point. :-/

OTOH it was definitely more quiet after your yelling. But I expect
that any not so friendly comment from someone who woke up would have
done that. Yelling was IMHO not necessary.

Hope you arrived fine anyway. :-)

Kind regards, Axel (who was still working back then and
doesn't feel guilty, except for waking up Thomas earlier by
knocking on his room door. :-)

[Debconf-discuss] Bicycling tour starts at 18:15 in front of the venue (was: Re: Bicycling instead of running?)

2011-07-28 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi,

Annette and I were exploring possible routes today before the banquet,
So here's the final plan

As announced previously we'll start earlier than initially planned.
This means that those who want to go bicycling also have to skip other
events events on the 18-19 time slot, currently the "mass deployment"
and "mobile ux" bofs and "coding for human rights". (I planned to
attend two of them, too. Meh.) But a later start no more makes sense
due to the no more so hot weather (compared to last week) and that we
plan to return the bicycles on the same day. (See below for details on
that.)

Current time plan:

A first group arrives around 18:00 at the Cycling Shop[1] to check and
fetch the bicycles.

A second group will start around 18:15 in front of the venue, walking
to the bicycle shop so that we can hopefully start around 18:30 from
there.

We should be back at 20:30 at the bicycle shop to return the bikes. We
should be back at the venue and Hotel Bosna around 21:00, so there's
time for a late dinner and some games afterwards.

There is still the fallback to return them on Saturday and store them
in the Hotel garage. But returning them on Saturday is probably more
difficult as probably not all people will available for driving them
back to the shop so we (Andreas and me) prefer the other solution.

How to get to the bicycle shop[1]:

[1] http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=44.776212&lon=17.201473&zoom=18&layers=M
http://www.cyclingshop-banjaluka.com/

From the venue we start not towards Hotel Bosna but to the opposite
direction and immediately turn left into that street with a lot of
cafés, "Miljosavljevića". We follow the road until the end (it's a
dead end for cars) and turn right, "Aleja svetog Save".

Follow the main street and turn the second possibility to the left,
"Gundulićeva". You should see a restaurant called "Fast Food Pizzeta"
on the next block. Follow the street until you see bicycles standing
on the right sideway.

Current route plan:

Summary: We'll see the outskirts and a surburb of Banja Luka, the
Castell, the place of the Ferhat Pasha Mosque and one (IMHO nice)
christian church. We'll ride along the river Vrbas quite often, we'll
ride on bicycle paths and calm streets, but at a few points also on
roads with quite some traffic. We'll cross parts of the railway tracks
around Banja Luka twice, cross the river Vrbas two times, and the
river Vrbanja once.

Details (for those who are interested):

From the bicycle shop we drive north towards the train station on the
bicycle path besides "Bulevar Srpske vojske". Before
the train station we turn right and take the bridge over the railway,
"Braće Pišteljića".

We cross the river Vrbas on a narrow hanging bridge (for cars :-) and
reach the village (or suburb) Česma.

There we either take the path on the dike around the village or turn
right inside the village, crossing the river Vrbanja on a new steel
work bridge.

We drive around some industry area and pass the railway again, this
time it's over us on a tiny steel bridge. Before we reach the river
Vrbas again we turn left ("Ada") and follow the river until the
cemetry "Rebrovač" with its (IMHO very nice) church and gate.

There we cross the river Vrbas and immediately turn left afterwards
into "Save Kovačevića" (which is a dead end for cars and therefore
with less traffic). We follow the river more or less until the castell
of Banja Luka. If possible again after DemoFest (wasn't possible again
today), we will go through the castell.

Outside the castell again, we'll cross the street "Téodora
Kolkotronisa" and follow "Patrijarha Makarija Skolovića". On our right
there is the place of the Ferhat Pasha Mosque[2].

[2] http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=44.76741&lon=17.18734&zoom=17&layers=M
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferhat_Pasha_Mosque

At the next street we turn right on the street which becomes "Kralja
Petra Karađorđevića" to head back towards Hotel Bosna and the venue.
We though have to get back to the bicycle shop, so we not necessarily
have to pass the venue, but can also use some of the parallel streets.

[Debconf-discuss] Now 20 Bicycles, but start earlier (was: Re: Bicycling instead of running?)

2011-07-26 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi,

I just was at the Tourist Office again as they wrote me, they have 5
more bicycles for us (i.e. now 20 bicycles), but they would like us to
return them on the same day if we don't have a save storage for them
overnight (which is very reasonable IMHO) as they have no locks. :-/

So we will probably start between 18:00 and 19:00 and return between
20:00 and 21:00. (Details to be announced.)

Since dinner seems to be available now up top 22:00, we could even be
back for dinner in time.

But we will have to spare out the last talk slot from 18:00 to 18:45.

Well, when we decided on that date, it was quite warm here over the

Sounds fine, but then all must skip dinner, too. Or take it after
coming back or in some restaurant.

I'm generally fine with this, I mostly put it on that time because most
evening activities start there because of the last talks and dinner.
And because of the heat over the day.

Fine for me would be:

Day 4 12:00-12:45
Day 3 16:00-16:45
Day 4 16:00-16:45
Day 5 16:00-16:45

preferred in that order.

Maybe. Annette and me were at the bike shop this aftern and we
reserved the bikes for Friday evening 20:00 at the bike shop.

We also asked them for other bike shops who possibly offer bikes for
rental and they showed us the bike shop just a few meters farther, but
they only sell bikes.

We then went to the tourist office again to ask them again if they
know another bike rental, but they told us the bike shop does the
rental thing just on behalf of the tourist info.

But the guy in the tourist info phoned around a little bit and seems
to see some chance to get more bicycles. He will know more tomorrow
morning or so, and promised to write me an e-mail tomorrow
independently if he found other bikes or not.

Yeah, but I was busy getting the bicycle tour ready during this

Well they just pointed me to the one bike shop I already found on the
net. A local guy who recognized Jonas and me as DebConf attendants
helped us finding that bike shop and was also very helpful in talking
with the tourist office and the guys at the bike shop.

The bike shop is in walking distance (1km or so) towards the north
east (I think :-) close to the stadium and has 15 bikes available for
renting. One bike costs 15KM per day and they want an ID from a local
as debit. (So if some local team member wants to join us... :-) We
should reserve the bikes at least one day in advance.

They don't have open on Sundays, but I got the mobile number from one
of the bike shop guys.

Regarding the date:

Joost also showed interest in the bicycle tour by private mail, but he
arrives only on Tuesday (26.7., Day 2) evening. The day after that
(27.7.) is the Day Trip. So only an evening date during DebConf looks
reasonable, also because of the necessarity to reserve the bikes one
day in advance.

On Day 2 (26.7.) there is the Cheese & Wine party at 21h and for
preparations I should be there earlier. Before that there's the group
photo from 18:45 to 19:00.

On Day 3 (28.7.) there is the Conference Banquet starting at 20h while
Andreas' Debian Med BoF ends only arount 19h. The time in between is
too short for a more or less organized bike tour IMHO and we probably
want to have dinner anyway. :-)

Day 4 (29.7.) has no activity in Pentabarf after 19h, so maybe that
would be the best date for something organized, because I think after
the closing ceremony maybe the first ones are already leaving.

Will try to put it into Pentabarf (in the hope that we won't have 100
attendants afterwards :-)

[Debconf-discuss] Bicycling instead of running?

2011-07-21 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi,

as I'm not into running, but into bicycling and have my folding bike
with me, I wonder if anyone else would like to do a bicycling tour
once during DebConf. Nothing big, maybe once around the city or so.

With my camper van I seem to have looked like a normal tourist and
when showing my German Personalausweis, they always just asked, if I'm
travelling alone. Nobody wanted to see my luggage or fridge. And
nobody asked why my camper van has a Swiss number plate while I'm
showing a German ID.

At the Croatian-Bosnian border I got asked something by one of the
four (!) persons who wanted to see my ID, but it was in a language I
didn't understand. And after answering the question with "English or
German, please", they just waved that I should go on.

At the Italian-Slovenian border (i.e. a Schengenland border) there was
not even someone looking or asking for anything.

FWIW, my home bank also told me that even all ATMs which support

I think that would be appreciated by many of us in case you see a
chance (without making them even more angry :-).

For me, this rule sounds like driving cabriolets is bad because in the
early days, cars had no hard roof, too.

Our operating system is all about freedom, so I can really understand
anyone who gets angry if someone else imposes rules which cut our
freedom in other areas.

I heard that from two more people (Jeroen and IIRC dkg). But I had no

Even the longer than four digits PIN code worked fine despite I had

Result of this thread was so far, that only Debian.ch will bring some
merch for sure and possibly Debian UK will bring some, too, because no
one could give us a postal address where to send the merch to in
advance.

I don't think we need a wiki page for one to two groups which will
bring merchandising stuff which very likely will be sold together
anyway.

Anyway, my camper-plan has solidified :-) although I'm still not 100%
sure if coming with camper van is really a good idea despite I really
would like to. :-/

> So it's just you, Axel.

And I'm expected to stay with that plan as my camper's fridge has
already been occupied by gismo's and OdyX's plans for the wine &
cheese party. And I must admit: Swiss Cheese Fondue or Raclette would
fit perfectly for the wine & cheese party. ;-)

According to http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/DebConf11/TravelInfo#Parking
there are quite some car parkings around the venue. Since there are
prices per day listed, I expect it's fine to park there for two weeks.

Anyone can tell me if it's also ok to stay (and sleep) there with a
camper van (from the parking's owner's as well as from a security
point of view)? I currently ogle with P2 to P5 as they're close by the
venue. (I though suspect there's no chance to get 220V power on those
car parkings.)

According to Google Maps[1] most of the car parkings seem to be
without height restriction, so they should be fine for my camper
(5.6m x 2.3m x 3.1m) from a size point of view.

I initially didn't notice that this question went more or less also to

For now we seem to be two camper vans (Wookey and me). If we have
access to some toilet rooms and showers, I'd say having a place(*) to
put the van and a power socket close by (15-50m should suffice) should
be ok. Close to the venue would be cool. (I imagine something like the
parking slots in front of the entrance at DebConf9 in Caceres.)

(*) slightly bigger than normal car's parking slot, like 6m long and
3m wide, but it depends a lot on the campervan. They commonly range
from 5m x 2m to > 7m x 2.3m.
