Re: [Debconf-discuss] Thanks from Columbia CS

2010-08-09 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Somehow I knew that Debian would be such a community. I guess Daisy
is setting the stage for miniDebConf-NYC, now that we know how to run
a DebConf ;) The ironic thing is that now we know how to run DebConf
in NYC and have this goodwill from Columbia, it'll never be here
again... maybe we could get letters of recommendation from her for the
next DebConf venue.

 Hi everyone,

I just wanted to send a quick thank you mail, on behalf of Daisy and
 all of the CS staff.

She was unbelievable impressed with our group overall, and had so much
 fun.

She said that never before had she seen such a clean group. We made
less mess than their faculty do at their events.

Never before had she seen so many cheeses from around the world, and
 such a well organized party.

She was impressed with how we left things better than we found it, for
example, fixing up all the chairs in Davis auditorium.

Never before had she seen a group so religiously obey no food rules
 - not even faculty conferences!

Had she known how great we'd be, we would have had no problem using
the courtyard for catering or a cw party, in addition to the CS
 Conference room.

She's offered to sponsor any meetings or workshops we may want in the
future. This is all thanks to _your_ great behavior.

 - Richard

[Debconf-discuss] Art Installations in NYC using Free Software

2010-08-05 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Hey all,

If you are interested in seeing some art installations that use
(almost) all Free Software, there are two projects that I worked on
that are open to the public and free as in beer:

Moveable Type, Ben Rubin and Mark Hansen.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/25/arts/design/25vide.html
Each of the 560 screens is also a little ARM computer with a speaker.
The setup is a custom Debian-based distro running Pd for sound and
Python for the screen and communications logic. As far as I know,
each of these computers is running 100% Free Software.

Magnum Mark, at FLAG Art
http://www.flagartfoundation.org/current/
Magnum is a photographers' collective that has been around for
decades. This is an exhibit of works from a range of Magnum
photographers from journalists to artists. I created the digital
display system which is Pd/Gem running on Ubuntu. The 10 screens are
running 99% Free Software, all except the fglrx video driver (the open
source one was close, but not quite there :'-( ). The video
projection is on an Mac running Pd/Gem since that machine was already
in place.

I have always wished for my computer to be as easy to use as my
telephone; my wish has come true because I can no longer figure out
how to use my telephone. --Bjarne Stroustrup (creator of C++)

[Debconf-discuss] scheduling the FreedomBox BoF

2010-08-03 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Hey all,

We had a very good impromptu meeting in 415 Schapiro after Eben Moglen's
talk about the FreedomBox, now we need to schedule a BoF to iron things
out.

- we have submitted a request to create the 'freedombox' project on
alioth.

- we took notes to start the process: http://wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox

Next thing to do is schedule a BoF so we can get more people involved in
the project and figure out what we are going to do now. Add your name
to the doodle schedule poll by 5pm TODAY so we can choose a time.

Subject: [dorkbotnyc-blabber] Thursday night talk at NYCResistor on open
source font design, by Dave Crossland
Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2010 00:10:20 -0400

Dave Crossland stopped into NYC to attend the Debian shindig this past week,
and is kindly giving a talk on open source font design using only free
software, and the general state of fonts on the web. This talk will co-incide
with our usual Craft Night at NYC Resistor from 6-9pm. Talk starts 6-ish. If
you're attending craft night for crafting events, it will be business as usual
in the room with too few A/Cs. Well, we did buy a fourth one. So that should
be pleasant.

Questions to cont...@nycresistor.com and our blog post here:
