1. RTFM linux/Documentation/README.DAC960 . Check that your card and

The installer program can not detect your scsi cdrom ..hence no driver,
there is no ide on the mother board on this server. If there are boot

Well the -f 1 should work from the CD to get console on the first serial
port. Make sure your terminal program has the right baud rate set and
flow control turned off. Of course you could try -2 just in case you
are on the second serial port instead.

A lot of plextor scsi drives have a jumper to enable 512byte mode. It
is usually required by unix systems to use them for booting. Certainly
my 12x plextor scsi drive has that jumper, although I have never got
around to trying it on my SGI or DEC (I installed the SGI by netboot
instead).

Yeah I am thinking of putting in a small scsi disk to boot from and a
large IDE or SATA disk on my 433a as well.

and on the PC side i intend to use hyperterminal.

is something missing?

I have an Alphastation 500/500 with a QLA 1040, too. Disk was SCSI and
CD-ROM was a DEC one (SCSI). The original CD-ROM was not intact and did not
like burned CDs. I replaced it by a TEAC CD-R 56 CD burner, which worked
perfectly. On the other hand, another CD-burner (Plextor) was not working,
because SRM console said, that it was not possible to switch the drive to
some special DEC mode with another sector size (I cannot recognize it
anymore). But the TEAC CD-R 56 works until now.

My Debian is now installed on a new and large Seagate SATA disc on a 5 $
SATA PCI controller (SiI 3114) with standard partition table, the /boot
mountpoint is an old SCSI ZIP drive which replaces the floppy in the box,
partitioned in the standard BSD/Tru64 way from which SRM can boot.

CDrom's generally handle 680MB. Looks fine to me.

I have no idea what an as800 is, although I think my PWS433a has a

Hmm, but before starting X, does it use a framebuffer driver or text mode?
You may need to look closely, or maybe look at dmesg. You could also press
Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go back to a normal console.

Not existing is different from a symlink to /dev/null. Anyways, does it
not exist with either kernel?

Are you using the UseFBDev option in xorg.conf?

Have you very carefully looked through /var/log/Xorg.0.log and compared it
to what you get when it does work?

Forgive me for asking the obvious questions, but:

What graphics card do you have?

Why does xinit care about /dev/fb0? Are you using the framebuffer driver
in xorg? If so, why aren't you using the driver for your video card? Are
you using the option that tries to do framebuffer magic when switching
VTs?

Is one of the kernel's framebuffer drivers getting used? IE, is your
console in text mode or graphics mode? Which framebuffer driver was
getting used with the previous kernel?

Does /dev/fb0 exist? Are you running udev?

From the little you said, my best guess would be that you are using the
fbdev xorg driver, and aren't getting the kernel framebuffer initalized
for some reason.

i want to use some old as800 and want to install linux on it, i've only
tried with debian "etch" until now, i know that centos, *BSD and alpha core
are also available, but i want to stick with debian.

this is my first time installing an alpha port of debian, booting process is
ok, installing process begins and stops at recognizing hardware because no
cd-rom "driver" is available, so install process can?t continue, i've also
tried to configure the network for remote install but the nic can?t be
recognized either.

i've googled for this with little success, the AS800 hardware is intact,
with no modifications, the cd drive i believe is DEC, all drives are scsi
but the floppy.

the scsi board controller is a Qlogic qla1040.

Did you check dmesg to see whether it loaded drivers for the qla1040?
Alt-F2 will give you a console with a shell where you can run dmesg.
Alt-F{3,4} have possibly useful messages from the installer.

note: the debian-40r2-alpha-kde-CD-1.iso has 672.518.144 bytes, and the
cd-rom specs are 600mb, don?t know if this could be a problem.

IIRC the spec was for 650 MB, which would be 681.574.400 bytes. Anyways,
that wouldn't prevent it from loading a driver for the drive. It would
have to load a driver before it could try to read the CD and get read
errors.
