You can use a hotplug script to automatically enable/disable the printer.

Put something like the following two files in /etc/hotplug/usb
The values for the .usermap file can be found with "lsusb".

USB printer

2005-10-01 Thread Mike Dobbs
I have a C42UX printer. It works great when it's plugged in and turned
on when the system boots. However, if it is turned off cups just
pauses the printer and says the printer cannot be found.

Any ideas on how to fix this, or where find out how to fix this?

THanks

X server troubles

2005-10-01 Thread nixul
Hello,

I have trouble setting up a satisfying xorg configuration.

Main system components are:
MB Gigabyte K8NS with Nforce3 chipset
CPU Athlon64 3700
RAM Kingston 1GB
Graphics card GEForce FX 5500

I have installed the nvidia module with module assistant, and it worked.
Before that, I had tried installing manually with the drivers from the nvidia
site but the module was never recognized.

The problem now is that the X server aborts on a signal 11 error. The
Xorg.0.log file is below . Before it aborts, I can very briefly see the
nvidia logo. I have also tried using a previous xorg.conf file from a 32-bit
system without success.

I have searched this list archives without finding a similar error. If I did
not look into the right places, thanks for pointing that to me. Thanks also
for your help, I need all the advice I can get.

Here is the Xorg.0.log file:

Have a look at ifplugd.

You can create multiple network definitions in /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
and configure the authentication method, (if any), for each network you
use.

There is definitely a lot of work to do on the wireless front for Linux.

Well, I compiled a kernel with debugging symbols just to find out that
it wouldn't help in narrowing down the source of the problem. Only that
dreaded "general protection" would appear in the log.

Then browsing the latest kernel changelogs, I stumbled across this (excerpt
from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/ChangeLog-2.6.14-rc2):

 commit bc5e8fdfc622b03acf5ac974a1b8b26da6511c99

 x86-64/smp: fix random SIGSEGV issues

They seem to have been due to AMD errata 63/122; the fix is to disable
TLB flush filtering in SMP configurations.

Confirmed to fix the problem by Andrew Walrond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

[ Let's see if we'll have a better fix eventually, this is the Q&D
"let's get this fixed and out there" version ]

 Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Right now I am in

 Linux dusk 2.6.14-rc3+patched+g1 #1 SMP Sat Oct 1 14:49:43 CEST 2005 x86_64
GNU/Linux

Well, well, I've just compiled a dozen times... Without a single failure!
So, a kernel bug it was indeed.

Re: Matlab in sarge amd64 chroot

2005-10-01 Thread Jamie Rollins
Matlab comes with a native x86-64 version that I've installed and runs fine on
Sarge, for what it's worth. Not sure why you would want to run it 32bit in a
chroot, honestly, but I'm sure there's a good reason. If you'd like some hints
getting it installed natively, I'd be happy to help.

Works fine here.

Go to Edit>Account Settings>Copies & Folders to choose where sent mail
is saved; I see all the IMAP folders listed here. (Using dovecot IMAP
on server).

I don't use T'bird but it seems to work as expected.

I'm not sure if this is related in anyway to your problem. I use MSI
K8T
(with VIA K8T800Pro chipset) and there seems to be very strict rules
on
how to arrange the memory modules in order to get 400MHz. There are
four
slots on board and they are referred as channel A (slots 1&2) and
channel B (slots 3&4).

If I use double side memory modules, they have to be inserted in slots
1
and 3 to get DDR400. If I install them into slots 1 and 2, I only get
DDR333.

On the Asus A8V there are 4 slots 2 blue and 2 black near the processor
like that:

Processor Blue(A1) Black(A2) Blue(B1) Black(B2)

They are called A1 A2 B1 B2 in this order

The blue slots have to be used first
DIMM with more than 18 chips arent supported

If you use only one DIMM, slot B1 should be used
If you use 2 DIMM, in dual channel mode, B1 and A1 should be used, they
have to be identical (better matched)

each pair must have the same CAS

They don't tell if you can use 3 DIMM ... In this case, if allowed, you
probably run in single channel.

For example, I use one matched pair twin 512 = 1024 in the blue slots
