.bashrc
Where should environmental variables be set to be accepted at boot in order to launch an application from anywhere from terminal window as root? I tried moving .bashrc (where the env variable are written) from my home to either /root or /boot/grub Neither worked. Of course I checked that setting manually the env variables from terminal window as root worked correctly. Also. .bashrc worked correctly to launch the application as user. Why launching as root? It is another story, surely of no interest to anyone else than me. Thanks for answering francesco pietra

I tried moving .bashrc (where the env variable are written) from my home to either The direct answer to your question would probably to set the setuid bit of those applications and set the owner to root. This is not very safe, however. Somewhat better may be to install sudo ('run application as root'). Yet a better way may be to try to explain which programs you want to run as root and why. You are right, though I have nothing to hide. I have setup a pivot_root install of knoppix, which provides a quasi-debian and which I use on other people hardware when visiting institutions, lijke recently in the South Seas. This saves the burden of a notebook and costed 115 euros only. If op hardware has at least 1GB ram, applications run faster that on true debian on the same hardware. Now, having broken the X system on etch (following upgrade, dropping in version mismatch), and having met difficulties in reestablishing it, while attempting to solve the problem, I use that pivot. One of my small computational application (mol mechanics) requires env variables to be launched from terminal window from anywhere. Placing a script saves the burden of writing the env variables each time. cheers francesco Best, Koen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? problems running fglrx drivers
Hello all, I am having problems with my ATI video board and fglrx driver, in debian etch amd64. I already install the packages fglrx, and make the fglrx kernel module without errors. I can start the Xorg environment with xinit or running kde, gnome, etc. But if I try to go back the virtual consoles (ctrl+alt+[1-6] ) my machine freezes. If I click on shutdown or restart buttons, or if I exec 'shutdown -r now at a konsole or gnome-terminal, the machine freezes. Ati, vesa or vga drivers don't work. At /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I dont have any errors. My video board is an ATI Radeon 256MB PCI-E. Anyone can help me with this? Best Regards, -- Eder L. Re: problems running fglrx drivers
My video board is an ATI Radeon 256MB PCI-E. There approximately 16 different ATI Radeon graphics chipsets in use which appear on a PCI-E bus and feature 256MiB of memory. You need to be more precise if you want a helpful answer - especially with the curious vesa doesn't work statement. --Jo Shields -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Sarge ClamAV upgrade
Hello, ClamAV on my Sarge AMD64 server is complaining that This version of the ClamAV engine is outdated.. On ClamAv's web page I found information that version 0.88 is recommended. In Sarge's repositories there is still 0.84. I found some unofficial repositories for i386, but none for AMD64. Is there any AMD64 repository avalible out there? That didn't help. ftp.us.debian.org has been acting funny for at least a week. Linux kernel 2.6.19 is out
Dear friends, Linux kernel 2.6.19 was released today on kernel.org. I hope it reaches Debian unstable soon. This kernel fixes most freezing problems under AMD64. Kind regards, Jean-Michel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
