So use the following command:

Replace the keyserver with a more suitable server inside the U.S.

velo# gpg --recv-keys 010908312D230C5F keyserver.pgp.com | apt-key add

I tries a couple other keyservers with the same results. What else can

Firefox themes don't install

2006-04-06 Thread Aaron Stromas
Hi,Yesterday I installed etch on a new Dell box. This morning I tried to change the theme in Firefox but instead of usual installation into themes set, Firefox untarred the themes jar. I reckon, since themes are packaged as jars it makes sense but I have never seen this behaviour before, firefox was somehow able to recognise that the jar contained a theme and handled it appropriately. Can someone explain why it is happening and how it can be fixed? TIA,

Which login screen, xdm or gdm?  If gdm, you can log into a termninal to fixthe ~/.xession problems.  I presume you can with xdm as well.

gdm. Can I? I don't recall (I'm not at the console right now) anything on the login screen suggesting a terminal client.

It may be that your ~/.xsession (or the defaut one) has both kde and gnome, somehow.  It shouldn't, of course.  Your ~/.xsession should end withexec gnome-session(no & after that).  This presumes you want to start with gnome.  kde users
will tell you what to do for that.

X configuration (amd64)

2006-01-02 Thread Aaron Stromas
Greetings,

I've installed amd64 etch and moved on to setting up X. I got iver the
nVidia card hurdle and run

apt-get install x-window-system
apt-get install gnome
apt-get install kde

(trying to avoid restarting the gnome vs. kde flames :))

X starts fine using both GNOME and KDE, the login screen collects
password, I get the spalsh screen and it shows the first load step
(?), i.e. the icon the debian sqauare with the caption "Window
Manager" but it stops there, no additional loads happen. If I click on
the icon, the square disappers and I'm lef with the background. If I
kill X, kdm/gdm will restart it. If I leave it alone, the screen saver
kicks in. Seems to me that the window manager fails to load. Any
suggestions what I should check? TIA,

option and reboot to see if it works.AFAIK the newer kernels seem to detect the nforce4 chipset andautomatically disable this function.  You could try the sid boot disk? This worked for me, YMMV.

The 'no root' is one of the specifics of Ubuntu intended to make the environment 'safe' for newbies but being a bit confusing for people coming from other distros. Actually, in the default Ubuntu installation there is no root user, and in case you need su privileges you have to enter 'sudo command' with your user's (!) password. (You can also use 'sudo su -' to have a su shell). You may check the Ubuntu forums how to change this, but there will be other drawbacks then. But if you only need this to modify your
sources.list and some others to upgrade/reinstall this will certainly work.

I realise that. I mentioned "sudo passwd" because it sets passwd for root and re-enables root login. I just learned it on the debian user list form lordSauron, I think.

Finally, assuming I succeed in setting up the system the way I like, can I simply edit the sources file to return back to the Debian fold?
I assume an apt-get dist-upgrade should do it if you uncomment the Ubuntu paths from the sources.list. However, I recommend that you upgrade the kernel (linux-image-) in a later step so that your network connectivity remains functionable (if it comes from the kernel configuration), and that you can easily swap kernels via GRUB's
menu.lst once you are back to plain Debian.Good luck!

thanks. i presume you mean "comment out". "uncomment" means taking off the comment mark, i.e., enabling whatever was commented out. sorry for the little lesson, i'm not native english speaker either.

installing amd64 kernel

2005-12-21 Thread Aaron Stromas
Greetings,

I received a number of advices on installation of my AMD Athlon 64 machine. This far I only was successful with (K)ubuntu. At one time I thought I got the Debian daily installer to detect my built-in nVidia Ethernet, but I was wrong. I've burned too many CDs and I was actually booting off an Ubuntu CD.

I submitted a bug and received a response that network detection isn't supported due to inability to detect the PCI ID. I was also advised to try Etch, however, I wasn't successful with the daily image. Isn't it Etch?

Len Sorensen pointed out the motherboard is supposed to have two network ports. Turns out it's true, except the second port is FireWire. The Ubuntu installed picked it out. I have never used Firewire networking, nor do I have a cable for it, so I'm going to ignore it for now.

Here are a couple of question I have for the list. I initially did Kubuntu server install and ended up with no root (sudo passwd!) and one root huge (79G) partition and a 3G swap partition. The I attempted to do an expert install, found a multiseat option which created several partitions for me. Unfortunately, it failed to install GRUB (and LILO), so I have to redo the installation hoping for the best. The installer creates ext3 filesystems. I'd like to try the reiserfs. Can I do that at the install time? I also didn't see how I can adjust partition size, not how to create additional partitions within the installer. Is that possible? I remember that last time I installed debian, I ended up creating only root (and swap), then, after finishing the install, I manually created partitions and filesystems for /usr, /var, /home and the rest and edited fstab. Should I go that way? Except, I can't remember whether I have an option to create only a small root.

Finally, assuming I succeed in setting up the system the way I like, can I simply edit the sources file to return back to the Debian fold?
Thanks in advance,

cause kernel panic on mine :)

the thing is -  when  i get the installer to come up , the
black page with the red debian swirl, the wireless combo works but it
stops

wait, it worked this time!

let's see if DHCP does... nope.

so, which module do i need to load? the thing is, when debian reboots without network it hangs on open_socket.
i'm hoping to open a virtual console before the istaller reboots and add the network module manually. should work, no?

Also the option of changing the legacy usb support option in the biossometimes helps.  Some systems prefer it on, some prefer it off.

no, only one port. oddly, ifconfig -a shows en0 and en1
Of course someone with the board could simply post the PCI ids for bothports and it would then be much simpler to look it up.

My saga isn't finished. The installer fails to configure the network.
On the plus side, after the reboot my USB edsktop is recognised. The
problem is I can't finish configuration since apt can't talk to
repositories. I could burn a bunch of CDs but it takes time to
download the images. Incidentally, i can't get bittorrent images at
all. last week i successfully got first image but since then nothing.

Back to my lack of networking. The box has A8N-SLI nvidia nForce PCI
Express motherboard with "nForce4 built-in Gbit MAC with external
Marvell PHY - NV ActiveArmor, NV Firewall, AI NET2" which Ubuntu
recognised w/o problems. Is there some parameter I can give to the
insteller to help configuring the network? TIA,

I was able to install Ubuntu and the newly burnt Debian CD started the
installer, but when the language selection screen came up I lost my
keyboard and mouse (Logitech wireless desktop). When I used the wired
mouse and keyboard I was able to select the language and go forward
with a couple more screens before is froze again. I had to unplug the
wireless desktop (USB) before I was able to proceed

Greetings,

Yesterday I wasn't able even too boot the netinst CD. This morning I
made a ltle progress, but not much. I burned a new netinst CD and
got the installer to come up. It turns out I was celebrating too
early: as soon as I got to the language selction screen both my
keyboard and mouse stopped working. It is one of those wireless
keyboard/mouse combos. I suppose, I could try with a wired keyboard...
any other suggestions?

I burned it on win 2k using Roxio which I used before to burn other
image CDs, like Knoppix.

Right, the motherboard is ASUS A8N-SLI

The images are from

I believe that if I mounted such a disk I'd the the
debian-31r0a-amd64-binary-1.iso, but i see all the files directories.

Problems installing on AMD Athlon 64 system

2005-12-17 Thread Aaron Stromas
Greetings,

I'm trying to install sarge amd64 on AMD Athlon 64 system and making
zero progress: none of the CDs I burned would boot, so I followed the
README.sbm, created a floppy with sbm.bin and booted off it. I got the
boot manager menu, selected the CDROM drive with the Debian image end
got "IO Error". I know the hardware can run 64 bit Linux, it has Red
Hat installed, but I prefer Debian. Any suggestions? I'd be most
grateful,
