Of course it could choose nv instead of nvidia (and likely does) making for a lousy solution. I guess the debian X team has decided to make life harder for most of us. You will have to manually specify the 'Driver "nvidia"' in your section for configured video device for now it would seem. You already had to edit it manually for lots of driver specific options, so I guess they haven't made it that much worse than it was before. It they were trying to get rid of stupid questions, perhaps the question about emulating 3 mouse buttons could go away since if X detects a real 3 button mouse it turns off the emulation anyhow. Ben Butler wrote: Just out of interest, why do you have the chroot's library paths in your ld.so.conf path? Is it to save yourself from having to use schroot/dchroot to launch an application? I would advise against that, although I have no firm reasoning as to why! Mainly for Mplayer, to go about the "transparent" method of launching it through a shell script using schroot (substituted for dchroot) documented here: http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/356 It really works quite well to "fool" Mplayer-plugin into launching the 32-bit version of Mplayer when viewing embedded content, which used to make _almost _as much multimedia content viewable as nspluginwrapper (now even CNN's gone to Flash video...). For that matter, it also works well for viewing/encoding the odd video from the command line. --Ben. -- "I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had." --Tears for Fears, "Mad World" Hi. I think that mplayerplug-in is very usable without a chroot. I use it on this system to watch all sorts of media from quicktime to realmedia to wmv, asf, etc. I've gotten the packages from the debian-multimedia.org repositories (mplayer, mplayerplug-in, etc) and the realmedia (essential) codecs (for 64bit) off the mplayer site. I installed the codecs in /usr/lib/codecs and everything works nicely without a chroot. ;-) -Jose -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I don't suppose that I could pull the deb and install it with dpkg, have it appear in aptitude as locally installed/obsolete and have it work? Or does it rely on newer versions of libs than are in Etch? Doug. If you could get it to install locally you should have no problems. As you say, it may not be possible because it could rely on newer packages (such as libc6, etc.). I decided to upgrade my h/w to an Athlon 3800+ and I thought I could just install the disks from the old system to the new h/w and work from there. The new system, as I said, is an Athlon 3800+ with an ATI Radeon 9200 (from Sapphire). Everything worked just fine until gdm started up. It looks like X will start, but when the screen blanks it just stays that way and I cannot break X or reboot the system with ctrl-alt-del. My old system was running an ATI 128 Rage Pro, but what I did was boot the new system into single user mode and reconfigured 'xserver-xorg' accepting sensible options. The configuration recognized the card and the monitor, etc. But X just doesn't work. At this point, I decided to reinstall using the Debian 4.0 netinst cd thinking that the reinstallation would default to a useful value, but the re-installation has the same problem with X. Does anyone have any suggestions I might follow to get my system back up? Everything works fine in the text console; it's just X that seems to be having problems. BTW, I've tried running a livecd (centos 4.3) and everything works just fine (gdm starts up, etc.). I'd appreciate any help. Thanks -Jose Isn't there a log file -- something like /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Whenever I screw up an X config or something screws it up for me, I usually can get the answer in that log file. Did my reply not make it? I had replied a couple of days ago saying that I did not find any real errors and posted the log. However, I was able to discover that I needed to install the fglrx-driver package to get the video card to work properly. I found there was a bug in the fglrx-driver package (#420379) that broke the driver so I had to find a way to patch it (as is suggested in the report). X is working fine now, except that before X would do something so that my Acer AL1917 monitor recognized the entire screen size (sort of flash like procedure) and showed the display properly. Now, there doesn't seem to be such a procedure which causes the monitor to not "center" the display correctly. At least I have X working correctly :-) Thanks. -Jose -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
