I have been using the 64-bit port since March 2006. Flash was not
available at the time. I must point out that I am a user who enjoys the
benefits that Debian brings and am thus prepared to put up with a few
cons.

Flash stopped being a problem at least two years ago - I could be wrong
there, it may be even longer than that. I have no reason to regret my
choice of using the 64-bit port. And, I may add, I am a non-technical user.

I have been running the AMD64 testing stream on a box with a single core
AMD64 processor since March 2006. About the only thing which was missing
was a flash plugin or its equivalent but it did not bother me much. Now,
of course, there is more than one plugin.

I have had no problem until recently when my GUI disappeared after an
update; simply deleting the old xorg.conf file and starting X solved
the problem.

Why don't you just use the statically compiled version?
Unpack it in a directory and run it from there.

WinFast DTV2000 H TV tuner card on AMD64 port

2008-11-02 Thread Sam Varghese
Has anyone on this list successfully used the WinFast DTV2000 H TV tuner
card with the AMD64 port?

I am running the testing stream with the 2.6.26-1-amd64 kernel.

The card has a Conexant chipset and there are two versions, referred to
as I and J. The former works without a problem but is no longer available
in the local (Australian) market; the latter has undergone some changes to
make it compatible with Windows Vista and this appears to have affected
its Linux compatibilty.

I note, however, that the latest version of Ubuntu does detect the card
properly as number 68 on the list of those based on this chipset. This
version of Ubuntu is running a 2.6.27 kernel; the kernel I have is 2.6,26
and there are 67 cards with the Conexant chipset which are supported.

What I'd like to know is, will there be support for this card when the
2.6.27 kernel comes into the testing archives? Or is this something that
the Ubuntu people have done on their own? Can some developer provide
an insight into this?

Thanks,
Sam

I'm afraid I don't recall. I had two machines, one Intel and one AMD,
doing more or less similar work and the latter was a length ahead. I was
using some scripts from the Gentoo wiki to process video, I recall.

You are right. I have mixed up two boxes here - one which needed attention due
to
the south bridge fan giving up the ghost and a second which had to be
tended to because a fan on a graphics card gave out.

You probably can source a replacement fan but if memory serves me right this
fan was riveted on to the board. Additionally, it was my own workstation
that I need every day so I opted to get a replacement board - though
having to put in a Gigabyte model to replace the A8N-SLI wasn't done with
any enthusiasm. I was on crutches at the time and only one person could be
asked to deliver a mobo at home - my dealer. The Gigabyte board was all she had
in stock.

You are probably right. But so far, whenever I've suspected memory
problems on any of the machines I've tended to and run memtest, it has
responded positively.

It's a little fan next to the graphics chip, comes on the motherboard.
Once it starts making a racket, you can live with the noise or else get

I have used both Intel and AMD dual-core and find AMD better for my work;
I'm basing this on one thing, the speed of processing video files.

I had an ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard but the graphics cooler died and I
could only get a GA-K8NF-9 as replacement.

I've found the smaller WD drives to be flaky; the bigger SATA ones are as
good or as bad as Seagate. You won't find drives of the quality of the
Quantum Fireball anymore.

First thing after building, boot from a Knoppix live CD and run memtest to
pick up any memory errors. I agree about Kingston.

If you're going wi-fi make sure the chipset is supported; many wireless
chipsets have no Linux drivers.

I'm running etch and I have nvu on my system; I think this is the
repository from where I got it:

deb http://labbs.net/~vale/debian ./

Not 100 percent sure, my sources.list has a lot of entries and I've not
bothered to add any comments.

Have a go and see; else it has to be this one:

deb http://mve035.mc2.chalmers.se/~gudjon/debian/amd64/ ./

I would have checked myself but the sites keep timing out as we have a
large number of upstream connectivity problems where I live in Australia
today due to the extreme weather and massive outages yesterday.

Cheers,

I used the nvidia driver initially while running sarge on the AMD64. I
then upgraded to etch and switched to the nv driver. I was using a Gigabyte
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 PCI-Express card on an ASUS A8N-SLI mainboard. My
display worked fine.

The mainboard went bad so I had to reinstall - now I'm using the nv driver
with etch RC1. I'm using the same card on a GA-K8NF-9. I cannot notice any
difference but then, like you, I don't have any need for 3D acceleration
and the other swizzly bits.

You'd probably need to reconfigure your X configuration.

As root run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and choose the nv driver.

I have an AMD 3000+ and the same card.

Grub gone from unstable

Anyone know why grub has been removed from unstable and lilo brought
back?

I upgraded a test install from testing to unstable two days back and found
that grub gets removed; lilo gets installed but no lilo-conf is generated.
The system still boots off the old menu.lst, though.

linux-image-2.6.16-2-amd64-k8
linux-headers-2.6.16-2-amd64-k8

After another round of experimmentation, the situation is the same.

lsmod | grep snd shows the following:

snd_intel8x0 35112 0
snd_ac97_codec102716 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97_bus3072 1 snd_ac97_codec

snd_timer 24200 1 snd_pcm
snd62976 6
snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 10912 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 11536 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

I ran alsaconf and now cat /proc/asound/cards shows one card:

0 [CK804 ]: NFORCE - NVidia CK804
  NVidia CK804 with ALC850 at 0xd3103000, irq 17

An ls /dev/dsp shows that dsp is a soft link to dsp0.

ls -la /dev/dsp shows that it is set up correctly:

crw-rw 1 root audio 14, 3 2006-07-20 10:01 /dev/dsp0

I don't know if there is some bunfight between KDE and Gnome apps for
devices - but then the KDE devices should work because Kscd plays music
fine. The KDE video players don't give me anything except pictures.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The situation is driving me nuts.

No sound on etch when using video players

2006-07-11 Thread Sam Varghese
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I have a problem with etch on AMD64 - no sound on any video player.

I am running a 2.6.15 kernel.

My sound card is recognised; cat /proc/asound/cards shows the following:

0 [CK804 ]: NFORCE - NVidia CK804
 NVidia CK804 with ALC850 at 0xd3103000, irq 17
1 [UART ]: MPU-401 UART - MPU-401 UART
 MPU-401 UART at 0x330, irq 10

I can play audio CDs using the KDE player kscd but the gnome player and
xmms do not work.

No matter which video player I use - totem, mplayer or kaffeine - I
get no sound.

With mplayer, the following output is seen:

Opening audio decoder: [liba52] AC3 decoding with liba52
Using SSE optimized IMDCT transform
AC3: 2.0 (stereo) 48000 Hz 448.0 kbit/s
Using MMX optimized resampler
AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 448.0 kbit/29.17% (ratio: 56000->192000)
Selected audio codec: [a52] afm: liba52 (AC3-liba52)

My config file for mplayer has the audio option set to alsa.

I have tried using esd after changing the option but to no avail.

When I run totem or kaffaine from a terminal, there is no output
relating to sound. The sound controls are active in both.

Any help in debugging this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I upgraded last week. One thing that did not transfer across was my
X configuration; I was using the nVidia drivers for Sarge and had to
reconfigure the Xserver to use the nv driver.

Why are you trying to compile it? On both my AMD64 installations - sarge
and etch - an apt-cache search libdvdcss shows:

libdvdcss2-dev - Simple foundation for reading DVDs - devel files
libdvdcss2 - Simple foundation for reading DVDs - runtime libraries

You can install it from the archives and then use totem to watch DVDs.

I too failed to upgrade from 2.6.8-11 but that was because I could
not find suitable nvidia drivers for the 2.6.15 kernel which I got from

Do you really believe that a business is set up for any other purpose
than to make money? The person running the business may create good
products but that is a matter of his/her own business practices; for
every good product there are 99 card-sharpers.

When it comes to software and hardware, businesses try to get and keep
your business using lock-in. Period. That their software and hardware
does what you need is purely incidental.

Having spent the last two days trying to source a laptop for my teenaged
daughter, I can tell you that I have about had it with the manufacturers
and the way they literally force you to buy what they have on display.
They can do this because apart from the drive and the memory, everything
else is built according to their own "design." If the laptop had been
commoditised the way the PC is, there would be an entirely different
situation.

Free software does not lock you in because the standards are open.

I did this once about a month back and broke my entire system.

I was merely looking for a kernel upgrade to get my nForce-based sound

I didn't mind losing the gnome and kde stuff but I also lost my X setup.

Thanks, Karl. This time it was a case of luser error.

When I ran the commands you specified, I noticed a directory called dvds

Upgrading to testing

2006-03-31 Thread Sam Varghese
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

This is my first post to this list.

I am running Sarge at the moment but would like to upgrade to testing. I
have been using the 64-bit version for just two weeks. I have run
testing for about two years on a 32-bit box.

The first time I tried an upgrade, it broke due to Xorg. I couldn't fix
it no matter what I tried so I reinstalled. Now I am dead scared to
upgrade - but I need to do so in order to get my nForce-based sound card
working as the module for the card is only available in the kernel
images in etch.

Having read some help pages, I think the following will help me check if
things will break again:

Change sources.list to testing

Run apt-get -s update, then run apt-get -s dist-upgrade

Then if there are no messages about incompatibilities, go ahead and do
the real thing.

Can someone tell me if this is the right path to take?

Thanks,
Sam
