Hi Jim,

- Xorg (GUI) should at least work with the vesa driver, which supports most
video cards (albeit at reduced resolution and without 3D support). You can
switch over to your dedicated driver (nvidia, ati, intel ...) after its
installation.

- This would indeed be the first Debian "distribution" lacking gcc. Check if
your 3 disks are all registered in /etc/apt/sources.list. If not, add your
disks using the command apt-cdrom add (I haven't done this for years, as I
always install from the internet, so I can't give you the exact details;
however, the process should be fairly self-explanatory).

Bug is not reproducible on my Debian Etch i386 box (iceweasel 2.0.0.6,

I do not know of any free driver, however, the commercial "Turboprint" drivers
support the MP150 (around 30 Euro, www.turboprint.de). I have been using this
software for years and would recommend it without reservation.

There seems to be a solution for the MP110, if you need a free solution, you
could try if it also works for your printer (openprinting.org).

Hi Jo,

You are right, it might have been luck - but I wouldn't call it 'dumb'.

First of all, its no secret which files are installed by the Nvidia installer:
there is a detailed list with files and destinations in Appendix C of the
Nvidia Readme.

Second, I have often heard the complaints over broken systems. However, I did
never observe any of these problems, not even after uninstalling the Nvidia
driver. An upgrade from Sarge to Etch also worked flawlessly (except the
Nvidia driver itself, which has to be compiled after the upgrade as it
depends on the kernel). And updates of XFree or X.Org Debian packages never
made any troubles.

Of course you are right that "packages are provided for a good reason" - but
they are not always provided. Sarge is still featuring version 7174, and
sarge-backports have 8174, compared with the recent 8776 from Nvidia. And
Etch has no package at all, you have to use the Sid packages. Therefore, I
will stick with the Nvidia installer simply because in my experience it works
on Sarge as well as on Etch and Sid, on 32bit as well as on 64bit - and
because it gives me allways an up-to-date driver.

Etch uses X.Org 7 which stores the modules in a different place than former
X.Org versions. However, there is a special command for the nvidia-installer
which puts the modules in the right place. Please have a look at the Readme
( /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-x.x).

I have been using the nvidia-installer (*.run file) with different Debian
versions on 32bit and 64bit systems for some time and I didn't have any
problems.

Even if you really feel you have to change the fs, you don't have to do
"everything ex novo"! It needs just space on any harddisk to prepare a new
set of partitions. After building the file systems, there is a simple way to
copy your running linux to the new set of partitions with only very small
modifications (see "Duping a Drive Under Linux",
http://linuxgazette.net/issue64/tag/12.html).

And if necessary, you could even repeat this process, ending up with your
linux system on exactly the same partitions as in the beginning, but using a
new fs!

I have used XFS on Debian i386 for years without any trouble or data loss, and
I am using it now on an amd64 system for about a year, also without any
complaints.

Grub has in fact been able to boot from a XFS partition for some years now, I
never used a special ext2/ext3 boot partition as sometimes suggested!
However, I encountered sometimes small difficulties while installing grub,
but I did no research if these problems where caused by the use of XFS.

Before switching to XFS, I have been using reiser3, facing lots of problems,
and ext3. However, as this was years ago, I really don't remember my reasons
for going from ext3 to XFS; at least, I can't remember any big problems while
using ext3, so I think my decision was due to theoretical considerations...

Well, I removed the old entries. The problem is clearly introduced by the new

Interestingly, although the packages provided by Sarge and Etch should

Re: The future of the amd64 port

2006-04-26 Thread cbergmann
Hi Olleg,

I have just stumbled across a similar (the same?) problem.

I am running Sarge with addition of some Etch packages. After switching
sources.list from

"http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-amd64/debian/ etch main contrib non-free"

to

"http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free",

aptitude wants to install about 20 packages from Sarge 3.1r0 again in the
identical version to that already installed. Worst of all, after reinstalling
these packages, aptitude keeps repeating the request to reinstall with every
run!

So, here seems to be a bug in package management. Interestingly, all packages
affected have one thing in common: their versions are identical in
Sarge/Stable and Etch/Testing.

It looks like Aptitude is believing that these packages are installed from
Etch and therefore tries to update them to the newest version (I use pinning
to stay with Sarge except for those packages I added from Etch). However, as
the packages installed from Etch are identical to those from Sarge, Aptitude
goes through this process over and over.

Regards Clemens

Re: rescue grub -- help!

2006-03-24 Thread cbergmann
Hi David,

I am a little bit curious why you have chosen to clone the drive with dd? I
have always used a different route for cloning a system (see also "Duping a
Drive Under Linux", http://linuxgazette.net/issue64/tag/12.html):

1. Partition the new drive as necessary;
2. Mount the partitions in the right order under your existing system (for
instance in /mnt);
3. Copy the complete system with cp -ax;
4. Use grub to install it to the MBR of the new drive;
5. Transfer the drive to your new system.

This route has an additional advantage: you can change the size of any
partition if necessary, and even use a totally different partition layout! I
never encountered any problems on this route.

Re: Running vmware 4.x (again)

2006-02-14 Thread cbergmann
Hi,

I am working with VMware 5.5, so I can't help with your module problems.

5.5 has still some dependencies on the 32bit chroot subsystem, but is
otherwise running on the 64bit platform (Debian Sarge). The transfer of my
Windows guest from VMware 5.0 on a 32bit host to 5.5 on 64bit host went
smoothly.

Concerning the processor stepping, I believe this is only important if you
want to install a 64bit guest system. As far as I know, VMware 5.5 can be
installed on every 64bit linux platform regardless of processor stepping.
However, you could consult the VMware support on this question.

Ok, I am very happy with my Debian SargeAMD64 system. And most of the troubles
you have heard of are probably connected with getting everything working.
Sarge AMD64 itself is rock stable on my system, however, the setup with an
32bit chroot is not as easy as the setup of a 32bit debian. The only real
problem I met with was the 2.6.8 kernel in Sarge, which had trouble with the
USB on the ASUS A8V Deluxe mainboard. So I switched to the 2.6.12 Etch kernel
- and everything went smoothly.

It is indeed ready for use. However, it depends on your demands. I would
suggest looking up if the applications you need are available in the AMD64
port. If not, on a server I would personally stay with the 32bit Sarge.
Considering your listing, I would believe everything is in thze AMD64 port
(which is still unofficial). Ans as security is a severe problem on any
server, I would recommend staying with Sarge/Stable and applying all security
updates (which aren't available in Etch/Testing an Sid/Unstable).

You don't have to ga back to an 32bit CPU - just install the standard 32bit
Sarge on an AMD64! It runs withpout any problem, and its only marginally
slower than the AMD64 port.

I had the same problem, just add sk98lin to /etc/modules and reboot.

Vuescan + SCSI scanner on amd64/chroot?

2005-12-18 Thread cbergmann
I am trying to get my Nikon Coolscan III slide scanner working on a Debian
Sarge AMD64 system with 32bit chroot, using Ed Hamrick's Vuescan. However,
Vuescan doesn't detect my SCSI scanner:

- 64bit xsane detects USB and SCSI scanner, so permissions are o.k.;

- Vuescan is installed in /opt, chroot and Pango are configured, Vuescan
detects USB scanner and works without any problem.

My questions:

1. Does anyone have success using Vuescan on amd64/chroot with a SCSI scanner?

2. Does anyone use a comparable setup with success (a 32bit program running
with chroot and accessing a SCSI device)?

Any help appreciated!

Regards, Clemens

Re: nvidia & suspend2

2005-12-11 Thread cbergmann
Hi,

I have a desktop with athlon64 and nvidia 6600 gpu, and I installed the new
nvidia driver 8174 without any problems using standard debian kernel images
(2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 and 2.6.12-1-amd64-k8).

Kind regards, Clemens

Re: Hello! from a newbie+ problems with debian for amd64+can't boot debian for i386 on amd64 from cd+can't extract sbm.bin from cd

2005-11-29 Thread cbergmann
Hi Martin!

I have no experience with nforce4 boards, so I can't give you much help here.
However, I would suggest to add the module for your network card to the
file /etc/modules. On booting, the network card wich is detectetd first
becomes eth0, and the one detected second eth1 (this was easier when there
was no ieee1394 (firewire) ethernet!). After modifying /etc/modules, restart
your PC, and hopefully your standard network card will be on eth0.

Dual-booting different Debian (or other Linux/Unix installations) is no
problem at all. I would suggest using the Grub bootmanager, but you also can
do it with Lilo (both are offered by Debian, al least when you are looking
for advanced configuration). You should carefully read the documentation of
your bootmanager before installing it -- otherwise any other OS may become
temporarily unavailable after installation of the bootmanager.

Concerning partitioning, just be carefull not to overwrite existing partitions
containing other OS. Apart from this warning, I believe the partition manager
is fairly straightforward to use. You can add and delete partitions, choose
the filesystem (just go with the default ext3; STAY AWAY FROM REISERFS), and
decide on formatting and mounting point of the partitions.

Metapackages are just collections of packages. The metapackage kde-core
installs every package neccessary for a working KDE environment, including
basic applications. Instead of installing every single package, you just type
"apt-get install kde-core" or "aptitude install kde-core". As always, read
the documentation of apt-get or aptitude - these tools are very
powerful, but they also can do much harm!

If you need a complete desktop environment, I would still go with i386
"stable" or "testing". These are fairly stable and offer a complete choice of
software. In addition, many applications like Adobes AcrobatReader and the
free OpenOffice, are only available as 32bit version. It is possible to use
32bit software with amd64 debian as well, but it is much more work to get it
working.

Regards Clemens

Re: [-?-SPAM-?-] Hello! from a newbie+ problems with debian for amd64+can't boot debian for i386 on amd64 from cd+can't extract sbm.bin from cd

2005-11-28 Thread cbergmann
Hi Martin,

If you are new to linux, I would definitely suggest to start with i386 Debian.
amd64 is not officially supported, and it still is a little bit tricky to get
everything working.

If your PC is booting any CD, it should also be able to boot the i386
installation CDs, I have done this many times on AMD64 systems! Therefore, I
would suspect a defect in the burned CD. Does it boot on any other PC? If
not, try burning a new CD or download the iso file again. If you have a fast
network connection, try one of the small minimal bootable CD images
(40/180MB; see Debian homepage).

For a start with KDE, just install the "kde-core" metapackage, which will give
you a basic KDE system without any thrills.

Regards, Clemens
