I don't have that board, but it happens with other boards. Try
running 'lsmod', the configs might be the same but the actual loaded

I am going through something similar. My SCSI cd-r shows errors then
disconnects. I have an older (PIII 1gz smp) box but I think the issue
is with IRQ/acpi/apic allocation. My next test is 'noapic, pci=bios'
the IRQ routing numbers otherwise don't make sense, to me anyway. My
bios allows me to asign an IRQ per slot.

crackly and popping audio problems on 32-bit chroot (deng and zsnes)

2006-07-01 Thread Greg Grotsky
  So I recently upgraded my myth machine to using AMD64 version of Debian, I was previously using "standard issue" -- 32-bit, for a year and a half.  So far I really like 64-bit!  But I've run into some problems as the subject gets at.
  Since ZSNES doesn't work (I tried compiling it for 64 bit and I get issues on the compile related to x86_64), I installed a chroot to run it from.  Same goes with doomsday (only it compiled fine but segfaulted when executed).  So I created the chroot and made all the mount points (/dev too) installed all the necessary libs and compiled the sources.  The problem comes when I run these programs they seem to work fine except for the audio...
  The (midi) music in doomsday is clear but the digital audio sound effects all have a crackle on top of them, all the sound in zsnes is crackly.  As if there's a audio buffer underrun taking place, but I never see error messages.  Both programs use SDL sound,  Without options on other sound outputs.  So I installed mplayer with all the sound options available and tried it out (with sdl,alsa, and oss) but it didn't have any problems! DOH!
  I'm really stuck on where to go now.  I've done google and searched the AMD64 archives, any one have a suggestion?  Or better yet a system that doesn't exhibit this issue (or a system does)?Thanks,-Greg

dselect wants to remove stuff that I don't want it to remove!

2006-06-28 Thread Greg Grotsky
Help.  I ran deselect and used SELECT to set ssh to "install" and
when I selected INSTALL it told me that it wanted to REMOVE several
packages that I need and did not want to uninstall.  When I
canceled the INSTALL and went back to SELECT to look at the packages it
said it was going to remove they were labeled as ***, three stars like:
"Don't remove"  What's going on here?  Anyone know?

Thanks,
-Greg

libdvdcss will not be on a US server, esp, one at MIT. All apt-cache
search means is that, at some time, you installed libdvdcss, it
doesn't indicate where it came from.

Use, 1. dselect or 2. Aptitude for a visualization of the names. Debian
uses meta-packages for kernel versions, which will insure that the latest
revision of a kernel is always installed.

Accessing USB drives on a Dell PE SC430

2006-04-13 Thread Greg Gilmour
Hello,

I am trying to figure out why I am no longer able to mount a USB flash
drive on a PowerEdge SC430. I successfully installed a base Sarge system
using the image from Kenshi Muto [0]. From here I compiled a 2.6.16.1
kernel to add built-in RAID-1 support so I could do boot-on-RAID (for
which I was successful). You can find the kernel config listed at [1].
Upon upgrading to the newer kernel I am no longer able to mount and
access USB media. More details from /var/log/messages can be found at
[2]. I would appreciate anyone's input so I can resolve the issue.

Thanks.

Note: I am not a member of this list so for any responses, please CC me
a copy.

The card won't cause an issue when the devices are not being used. It is
just when using the devices, with fast scsi you have to wait for the
results, if applicable, of those operations. It all depends on what you
do with your system, I.E. scanning high res color photo photos can create
a large file that takes (x)time to transfer over scsi, while the USB2
would transfer much faster 480Mbs or 60MB/s vs the 10-20? MB/s for fast
scsi, same with a hard drive. Of course if you don't use those
peripherals that much it isn't an issue.

Fast MB, unless you have all the (external) devices left over, I would't
bother with fast scsi as I/O. With that board you have USB2, Firewire
400, and with an add in card firewire 800. That card ad or the devices
attched to it becomes the bottleneck for perfornance. If you have to go
scsi I would get a cheaper card, I have used a Tekram DC-315U and a SIIG
AP-10, both supported by Etch.

I do think a fan on the hd cage is essential , which some of the Chenbro

For a new laptop I would say Sarge probably is not current enough, check
the hardware though if you want to be sure. A while back unstable was a
better bet for amd64 than testing, not sure if that is still the case.

There are issues with Abit mb and Antec True Power Ps. I used to believe

I use the package 'powernowd', I use it from the comand line, some gnome
app may interface with it . Two other packages:

'cpufrequtils - utilities to deal with the cpufreq Linux kernel feature

This package contains two utilities for inspecting and setting the cpu
frequency through both the sysfs and
procfs CPUFreq kernel interfaces.'

"libcpufreq0 "- shared library to deal with the cpufreq Linux kernel
feature.
This library provide an unified method to access the CPUFreq kernel
interface.'

"powernowd - control cpu speed and voltage using 2.6 kernel interface

This simple client controls CPU speed and voltage using the sysfs
interface to the CPUFreq driver in v2.6 Linux
kernels. It does not depend on APM or ACPI, and it doesn't try to do
anything other than control the CPU.

The name is somewhat misleading, as any CPUfreq capable processor will
work, not just those from AMD. However,
it works better on CPUs that support more than two speed steps, like those
with AMD's PowerNow! or Intel's
Pentium M series.

This daemon is less complicated than cpufreqd or cpudyn, at the cost of
absolutely depending on a 2.6 kernel
with the userspace governor and sysfs support enabled."

Use the commands cpufreq-set or cpufreq-info to set or check status. There
are man pages for each.

AFAIK the K7 will run on a pentium cpu, running the correct kernel version
allows you to take advantage of the powersavings and any other of the
flags set for the cpu. If you put it into a different box it still works,
but some kernel features, i.e. powernow governor throttling won't work.

Apt-get may not be the best way to install such a large group of packages,
it is not very informative. Using dselect I get openoffice.org-core
depends on libnss & libnspr4, which are not available. This is on my
32bit Etch but may be useful.

Ubuntu uses the 2.6.12 kernel, Sarge uses the 2.6.8 kernel, so there may
be some driver issues for newer hardware. There is a Sarge 2.6.12
net-install disk made by Len Sorenson available, check the list, this may
help get Debian installed.

Very well could be, maybe I should have said Athlon Amd64 vs Opteron. Tyan

Dell is to cheap to buy Tyan boards, Tyan has only one or two AMD64 boards all
the rest are Opteron based, whic cost more. If Dell is going after the server

To sum up, there won't be a 64 bit OOo.org any time soon. 32 bit chroots are
beyond what a user can be expected to setup. The AMD64 cpu can run 32 & 64
bit apps at the same time, all is needed are the correct libraries installed
for the 32 bit apps. This last point is what Ubuntu and others have used to
run OpenOffice on 64 bit. Does Debian amd64 have such a plan for running
OpenOffice ?

Say what you will about OpenOffice, oowriter is the only wordproccesor in
Linux that has a feature set that some/many/I require. Hopefully this will
change, I like Abiword, small & quick it is.

It is not a 64 bit version of OOo.org, it is 32 bit, and they (Ubuntu) have

Ubuntu Breezy has it all setup, 32 bit libs and a beta V.2 of OOo.org. Just
works. For Debian I switched to 32 bit on my AMD64 since I don't do chroots
and live in OOo.org at work. It is easier to dl the tar ball from OOo.org and
do it myself.

I use this one, I don't know what the {ftp\http} is about, but mine
works with http only in the source, and picking only one version, sid
or sarge. Use a browser to see if the address's are online and what is

packages is from: http://amd64.debian.net/ or a mirror :
http://amd64.debian.net/README.mirrors.txt.

Might explain my tests, I used bonnie++ to test a U320 10,000 rpm drive
located on a U160 HBA, sync rate 160MBsec. I get 51/58 MB/sec for IO,
hdparm -Tt reads 39MB/sec. Bonnie tests file system & hard drive
performance, hdparm ?

Glad to see it works, Other options are jigdo & torrents, both supported
by Debian, i.e., available same location as the iso's. I am seeding the
Sarge AMD64 dvd's now, not much bandwidth though :-)

They are available to download using several methods. I don't know if a
vendor has them for sale.
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/sarge-amd64/

The i386 port works fine on amd64 cpu's, and there isn't a 50%
performance difference, in fact ,depending on what you are doing you
may not otice any difference.

The 2.6 kernels use dev=ATA:x,x,x, as in 'cdrecord dev=ATA: -scanbus'. I
haven't used Xcdroast but if there isn't a way to configure it to use
dev=ATA then I don't think it will work with a 2.6 kernel.

K3B depends on dvd+rw-tools, which has growisofs. K3B has a setup
program to search and include the necessary binaries to burn. The setup
program also changes permissions. Not finding growisofs could be a
permission issue.

AFAIKT from the VMware site, VMware supports specific versions of
distros/kernels. It is ambiguous, at least to me, to say they support
64bit when they say they support i.e. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 -
stock 2.4.19, 64-bit. Suse includes the ia32-libs so does this mean
VMware will run on a pure64 OS or only one with the appropriate 32 bit
libraries loaded.

Vmware

2005-04-15 Thread Greg Madden
I have Sarge-anm64, running, using alioth net-install iso & package
archives. I was able to work through the missing libz.so.1 &
libXrender.so.1 isssue, copied them from my ia32 Sarge box.

Vmware configures the modules needed, vmnet& vmmon, but fails to power
on the VM, either an existing one or a new one. VMware v5.0.

There have been some references to this found using Google but nothing I
can figure out as to the problem & solution. Hopefully someone has
VMware running on Debian-amd64.

Doomsday with 32bit Chroot, what now?

2005-02-21 Thread Greg Grotsky
Hi guys,
I'm an old gamer and I like my doom. Unfortunately, deng 1.8.6 isn't 64 bit
compatible yet. So, I've got my 32bit chroot installed and I downloaded
deng, I was able to compile deng in the 32bit chroot while I couldn't get it
compiled in 64-bit. However, now that it's compiled and installed (in my
chroot) I can't figure out how to run it. No matter if I try to redirect
the display to :0.0 or not deng doesn't work. It gives me the following:

# /usr/local/bin/doomsday -game jdoom -file doom.wad -userdir

LoadPlugin: /usr/local/lib/libdpmapload

Not a show stopper if I can't get it working. Just wanted to see how it

Re: Framebuffer and Kernel issues

2005-02-17 Thread Greg Grotsky
Guys, I figured it out! Finally! Sheesh what a PITA. Anyway, for some
reason you can't load the modules:

cfbcopyarea
cfbfillrect
cfbimgblt
font
fbcon
after your already booted and get frame buffers working. I even tried
adding these bad boys to the /etc/modules so that they load on startup.
Still didn't work. So I added them to the /etc/mkinitrd/modules list and
remade my initrd. When I rebooted it worked like a charm! YAY! So if you
ever get the "Error -6" it means that you need to load that vesafb in your
initrd. Weird, I know but it works now. That was the key!

Re: Re: Framebuffer and Kernel issues

2005-02-17 Thread Greg Grotsky
So I've been trying to figure out the console framebuffer still without
success. I have some interesting information though. Whenever I load the
vesafb module at the command prompt by doing a "modprobe vesafb" I get this
error (I've already loaded fbcon, and the three cfb* modules):

vesafb: probe of vesafb0 failed with error -6
Does anyone know what this means? I googled on it and it came up with a few
hits but they were no help. When I try to do an fbset after loading the
vesafb module it still says "/dev/fb0 not found". I'm at a loss. I found
out something else interesting. When I unload the vesafb module it gives me
this:

Device 'vesafb0' does not have a release() function, it is broken and must
be fixed.
Badness in device_release at drivers/base/core.c:85

Call Trace:{kobject_cleanup+100}

   {sys_delete_module+354}
{do_munmap+290}
   {sys_munmap+90}
{system_call+126}

I don't know if anyone cares about this because mostly when you have the
vesafb module loaded you won't be unloading it but I dunno, maybe it's
another clue.

-Greg

Re: MythTv64

Also, if you guys want to compile with native ARTS support, the directory
locations are as follows (also in settings.pro)

# For Debian
ARTS_LIBS = -L/usr/lib/kde3 -ldl -lartsc -lpthread
EXTRA_LIBS += -L/usr/lib/kde3 -ldl -lartsc -lpthread
INCLUDEPATH += /usr/include/kde
I found that the default settings and the Mandrake settings didn't make
sense with the Debian AMD64 port. I believe the locations above are
correct... at least it compiled on my machine. :P

Re: MythTv64

2005-02-14 Thread Greg Grotsky
Guys, if you want to compile MythTV with gcc-3.4 which is what you'll need
if you want the 64bit instruction set then you need to add these lines to
your settings.pro before you compile. (I found them on a google search,
they were on some Japanese page intermingled with the forien characters.)

CONFIG += release /* this line exists */
QMAKE_CC = gcc-3.4   /* add this line */
QMAKE_CXX = g++-3.4  /* add this line */
QMAKE_LINK = g++-3.4  /* add this line */
isEmpty( PREFIX ) {  /* this line exists */
Then it'll compile with the "good" instruction set.
 If anyone is using the AMD64 port with a pcHDTV card and has it working
well. Please email me. I'm struggling with this card trying to get it
working with Myth and 64 bits. I have it sorta working but it's hit and
miss for watching live TV. If I try to go watch live TV it will work
without sound 1 out of 10 times. The other times it just gives me a black
screen while I can hear the drives working. It's like the frontend just
freezes. I'm also trying out the DVB drivers but they are so cutting edge
that there isn't really any "good" documentation on setting Myth up with
pcHDTV in DVB.

Thanks,
-Greg

Re: Framebuffer and Kernel Issues

2005-02-13 Thread Greg Grotsky
So, I've been doing some more research on the framebuffer issue and for some
reason when I boot to a kernel that I have compiled the thing complains
that /dev/fb0 is not a valid device. I've compiled the kernel including
with
Y for YES the options for framebuffers and console fb but it still doesn't
work. I even took the stock Debian 64bit 2.6.9 kernel and built it without
a
make config. So everything is a module, but it still doesn't work.

I've found something interesting though. I downloaded a piece of software
called fbset which is supposed to allow you to switch fb settings on the
fly.
I tried it out on my self-compiled kernel and it gave me this:

# fbset
open /dev/fb0: No such device
When it works (on the default kernel) it looks like this:
# fbset
mode "1024x768-76"
   # D: 78.653 MHz, H: 59.949 kHz, V: 75.694 Hz
   geometry 1024 768 1024 768 32
   timings 12714 128 32 16 4 128 4
   rgba 8/16,8/8,8/0,8/24
endmode
Now, I thought maybe the other default kernel has extra stuff on it so I
booted to it and checked the loaded modules and I saw that it had these
installed:
vesafb  7480  0
cfbcopyarea 3968  1 vesafb
cfbimgblt   3136  1 vesafb
cfbfillrect 4224  1 vesafb
fbcon  39648  0
font8960  1 fbcon
So I booted back to my own kernel and loaded these modules (no problems
loading) but I still, according to the system, don't have a /dev/fb0. I can
do a 'ls /dev/fb*" and see fb0 through fb7 but it still says that they don't
exist.
# ls -la /dev/fb*
crw-rw  1 root video 29, 0 Feb 11 08:22 /dev/fb0
crw-rw  1 root video 29, 1 Feb 11 08:22 /dev/fb1
crw-rw  1 root video 29, 2 Feb 11 08:22 /dev/fb2

It seems like I need to do something with the kernel but I've tried almost
everything in the kernel config options and have been unable to get
framebuffers working. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
BTW: I'm using an Nvidia FX5700 Ultra, though it shouldn't matter cause it
works in the default kernel.
Thanks,

Re: Framebuffer and Kernel issues

2005-02-07 Thread Greg Grotsky
I'm still unable to get VESA framebuffers working. Here are some of my
system configuration settings:

My .config for my current 2.6.9 kernel...

vga=ask
initrd  /boot/initrd.img-2.6.9.Feb_6th
savedefault
boot

I have tried all sorts of settings on the kernel line like the following:
vga=0x301
vga=0x312
vga=0x305
vga=0x318
vga=792
vga=769
video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr vga=ask
none of them seem to work except the crappy 80x25, unless I boot to a
default kernel that was pre-made and came with AMD64. I've followed all the
information listed on this
(http://www.linuxforums.org/tutorials/1/tutorial-3523.html) and other sites
trying to get it working. I have all the options enabled in the kernel that
should be, it seems pretty straight forward but geeze! I'll have to try the
video=vga16:off thing.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
-Greg

Installing Nvidia 1.0.6629 Driver

2005-02-04 Thread Greg Grotsky
All,
So since I am so new to this 64 bit stuff, I have a stupid question. Should
I be using nvidia's AMD 64bit driver?  I downloaded Nvidia's 1.0.6629 driver
for AMD64 and tried to install it onto my system. It appeared to install
correctly but gave me a warning about a 32bit library. When the installer
was done I tried to load the module and it seemed to load just fine, normal
messages in the kernel. But when I setup the XFree86-4 config file for the
nvidia driver and ran X11, it kicked me out saying that it couldn't find the
nvidia module! I had it loaded in memory, it should not have to find the
module.

I struggled for a while trying to get this working by messing with the X11
config file but finally gave up and uninstalled the driver. I put the X11
config file back to the original specs and I can't get into X now. It
complains about some libGL symbols, then complains about VESA
write-combining range. What the heck is that? Did I screw myself when I
installed the drivers? I read some posts from a while back about the nvidia
drivers and how they install their own libraries in places you may not want
them. How can I get my X11 working again? I prefer to get the nvidia
driver installed but just a quick and dirty hack to get vesa back would be
acceptable.

Re: suggestions for a 64 bit laptop?

2005-02-01 Thread greg
Hello,

I bought an ASUS L5000D 6 month ago, and it works well. The only minor issue is
the winmodem, but
I'm sure now the Linuxant driver can recognize it.
I've written a web page to explain how I installed Debian on it:

Broken package list ?

2005-01-04 Thread greg
Hi,

I try to get http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/pure64 packages for upgrade
purpose, but I think
there's a broken dependency or something:

libcupsys2-dev: Depends: libcupsys2-gnutls10 (= 1.1.22-2) but 1.1.22-3 is
installed

$ dpkg -l libcupsys2-gnutls10
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version  Description
+++---
iU libcupsys2-gnutls10 1.1.22-3 Common UNIX Printing
System(tm) - libs

How could I correct this locally ?

Yep, I got this line on my "lspci":

:02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Yukon Gigabit
Ethernet
10/100/1000Base-T Adapter (rev 13)

And the sk98lin module makes it work perfectly. I haven't tried the gigabit
speed yet.

Hi,

Your work is almost done. Just DL the 32 bits zlib package from debian.org,
decompress it on your
/emul/ia32-linux folder, ldconfig and here we go.

WineX "Cedega" compilation

2004-11-04 Thread greg
Hi there,

I miss so much WineX that I decided to compile it under my pure64 environment,
without any ia32 chroot.

Here are the first steps of my road to fun:

- get winex with CVS

- configure:

$ cd winex
$ export CC="gcc-3.4 -m32"
$ export LDFLAGS="-I /emul/ia32-libs/usr/include"
$ ./configure --x-libraries=/emul/ia32-linux/usr/X11R6/lib \
--x-includes=/emul/ia32-linux/usr/X11R6/include

- break my teeth:

$ make
[snip]
make[2]: Entering directory `/home/greg/TGZ/winex/winex/dlls/ntdll'
gcc-3.4 -m32 -MMD -c  -I. -I. -I../../include -I../../include  -I
/emul/ia32-linux/usr/include -Wall
-mpreferred-scsignal_i386.c: In function `wine_sigaction':
signal_i386.c:123: error: `__NR_sigaction' undeclared (first use in this
function)
[etc etc]

I'm pretty sure that __NR_sigaction is used in
/emul/ia32-libs/usr/include/bits/syscall.h to define
SYS_sigaction:

#define SYS_sigaction __NR_sigaction

No __NR_sigaction is declared in kernel headers, but I found __NR_rt_sigaction.

My questions:
- Did someone find the way to compile well WineX on AMD64 ?
- Do someone can explain me the __NR_something problem I have ?

Thank you !

That's the first thing I've tried :/ fdisk /dev/sda works perfectly, mkfs.msdos
too (I can read the
key on another computer, linux or windows).

VFAT: Very stupid question

2004-10-21 Thread greg
Hi,

I try to mount a VFAT USB key on my Debian/pure64 distro without any success:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/greg\> mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/usb/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
   or too many mounted file systems

I can mount the key on a ix86 32 bit system.
I don't think this is an USB problem, because I can mount the key when it's
ext2 formated, all
modules related to USB are loaded etc etc.
I don't have any VFAT HD partition to make tests.
I tried with FAT (msdos), same problem.

So here is my question: is there someone here, who can mount VFAT or FAT with
the
kernel-image-2.6.8-amd64 ?

Thanks !

Thanks a lot, it compiles well.
Now I can't get to the modem device, but I think it's not 64 bits-related, damn
winmodems ...
Thanks again !

P.S: just for curiosity, do all libs in /emu/ia32-linux come directly from

Need ia32 alsa lib

2004-10-07 Thread greg
Hi there,

I'm compiling slmodem with ALSA support, in order to use an i8x0m modem.
Unfortunately, it won't compile with ia64 libs, so I use the "-m32" option. But
it won't compile
neither because ia32-libs deb package does not contain libasound.so.
So, is there a way to have libasound.so in the ia32-libs package ? Or is their
a rapid way to get
this binary ?

Thanks
