There are multiple problems with this: - It requires to turn your disk to a Dynamic Disk in Windows. Although the Linux kernel supports it, I never tried it and I do not know what tools are available under Linux for managing dynamic disks (like creating/deleting partitions). - Although XP can _use_ mirrored volumes, it can not _create_ them. You need a server edition of Windows to create the volumes. If you do not want to buy a server edition license, then you've lost. Microsoft has still a _lot_ to learn. There was a published hack on Tom's Hardware (dunno if it's there anymore) that explain how to get around this limitation, if you're daring. It comes down to hexediting one of the disk management DLLs. Thanks, Adam -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
AMD64 + nvraid installation
Hello list, Just a short question: I'm getting an AMD64 system delivered soon, and I'd like to make use of the nvidia 'softraid' that comes with it (I need it in both OS' that will run on the box). I haven't really found much documentation on this: is this supported from the debian installer on amd64? Or is it manual work? Thanks, Jan -- I would gladly raise my voice in praise of women, only they won't let me raise my voice. -- Winkle -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? I don't think you're getting a major tradeoff out of this, maybe a little less performance under Windows, but better performance under Linux. I haven't really found much documentation on this: is this supported from the debian installer on amd64? Or is it manual work? You probably will need a very recent kernel, and I'm not too sure whether the nvidia soft RAID is binary-only driver? In which case, absolutely do not touch it with a four metre barge pole. Unless you like the idea of your data potentially being held to ransom by nVidia . but most people use RAID in order to make their data *more* secure, not *less* secure. Either get yourself a proper hardware RAID card such as a 3Ware {which is expensive, but will make the whole array appear as a single SCSI drive}; or use Linux's established, Open Source software RAID. You might get away with using closed-source drivers for a graphics card {there's always SSH in an emergency}; but relying on them for something as fundamental as your hard disks is just bending over and asking for it. -- AJS -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. No idea, I haven't used the debian installer for some time simply cause there was no amd64 box to install ;-) Given the amount of nvidia based amd64 platforms, supporting dmraid from the installer would make sense. Debian does not to my knowledge support dmraid in the installer at this time. You might be able to install on another HD, build the needed modules/kernel/etc, and then setup the dmraid on the nvidia raid, and copy the install to there and make it work. But there is no easy solution at this time. I personally don't trust fake raids much, and since I don't dual boot, I don't have an issue with it. I also like my raid to be independant of my motherboard. -- Len Sorensen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
