Failure within netinst: ide-disk and ide-generic are hanging each other
I am trying to run the Debian netinst with my new ASUS motherboard and AMD. The installation process is stuck when I run modprobe ide-generic modprobe ide-disk The same for oposite. The command cat kmsg is claiming about DMA timeout. ( I may misspell the error message since I can`t use a disk to store things ) Unfortunately the ide-disks are the only disks that I have. Therefore this E-Mail I am writing from WindowsXP. image: sarge-amd64-2.6.12-netinst.iso hardware configuration ( from Windows Device Manager :( ): IDE controller: NVIDIA nForce4 Paralell ATA controller primary channel: master:Maxtor 4D040H2 - Ultra DMA6 - Ultra133 (HardDisk) slave: WDC WD2500JB-00GVA0 - Ultra DMA5 - Ultra100 (second HardDisk) secondary channel: master:SAMSUNG DVD-ROM slave: HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! I would have expected an nforce4 board to work rather easily. Which board is it? You also probably shouldn't need ide-generic at all, but rather amd74xx (at least my nforce2 uses that ide driver). Re: Failure within netinst: ide-disk and ide-generic are hanging each other
Thanks for your fast answer. The board is ASUS K8N4-E. Without ide-generic the installer is not able to use CD`s it was booted from. If I don`t load ide-disk, the continuation menu of installer appears, but disks can`t be accessed. There is amd74xx module and it is loaded. Re: Failure within netinst: ide-disk and ide-generic are hanging each other
Unfortunately I am not able to copy-paste the log. However, here is what I succeeded to write down (from kmsg): amd74xx print versioning info, no error ide-generic klogd[243]: segfault [some addresses] error 6 then goes successfull description of IDE controlled devices ide-disk some info, then hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0xff From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Lennart Sorensen) To: Arkadi Kagan [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: debian-amd64@lists.debian.org Subject: Re: Failure within netinst: ide-disk and ide-generic are hanging each other Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2006 15:21:09 -0500 On Tue, Mar 07, 2006 at 09:52:37PM +0200, Arkadi Kagan wrote: Thanks for your fast answer. Pretty sure I have seen people report that A8N* boards worked fine, so I would have thought the K8N* boards should work the same. does dmesg show anything detected when amd74xx is loaded? make sure to load that before ide-generic or ide-generic will take over (and it doesn't do dma and would be very very slow). I tried the testing image. The only noticible difference is klogd not running or misconfigured.
