The error message is pretty explicit. You are using a video driver that
does not support the composite extensions.

Please provide your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and your hardware configuration,
all fortune tellers are on holiday at the moment.

P.S.: Don't post HTML on the list.

ATI users still have to use that, but nvidia users do not. Xgl is not
an ellegant solution at all, so it not being present is a good thing.

Perhaps you should install the nvidia-settings package then.

compiz: strange settings

2008-04-26 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hi all,

I found some files, which seem to have got false settings. As I do not know,
if this happened during the installation or during normal use, I hope someone
can take a look on this.

Additionally I did not find out, in which package these files are.

apt-file did not help.

These are the files:

protheus2:/etc/qt3# ls -la
insgesamt 40
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 20. Apr 19:06 .
drwxr-xr-x 212 root root 12288 26. Apr 11:12 ..
-rw--- 1 root root 864 18. Apr 12:01 qt_plugins_3.3rc
-rw--- 1 root root 0 21. Mär 2007 .qt_plugins_3.3rc.lock
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1021 20. Apr 19:06 qtrc
-rw--- 1 root root 0 1. Apr 2007 .qtrc.lock
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 11. Mär 17:17 qvfb
protheus2:/etc/qt3#

--

I suppose, they should be -rw---r--r, as compiz --replace (started as
normal user) cannot get access to it.

So, it would be nice, if someone could confirm (or deny) this, before I send a
bugreport.

Best regards

Hans

getting compiz going....

2008-04-26 Thread Michael Fothergill

Dear Debianists,

I bought an nvidia graphics card (8500GT) and stuck it in my desktop PC which
is an AMD64 Sempron machine that was sold originally with just onboard
graphics. It was running Debian Etch. I upgraded it to Lenny. I installed the
nvidia driver and I think it went OK because I ran the test at the end using
glxinfo:

spc1-burn4-0-0-cust452:/etc/X11# glxinfo |grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes

This result is supposed to show that the graphics card is actually working. The
kernel fix etc seemed to go OK.

So then I tried to install compiz. I did apt-get install compiz and then I
edited the xorg.conf file and added the various terms to it that are
recommended to run compiz.

I noticed that the Option parameters etc sit at what appear be fixed tab points
along the line and used the tab character to jump to them before typing in the
entries.

I hope this was OK. If not please warn me.

At first the modified xorg.conf while would not run. This is because you have
to add a return character after the last EndSection entry to generate a new
linw in the file. The parser in X11 doesn't understand it without this and
won't execute.

I also have tabs between e.g. Render Accel and true. I hope this is OK too.
Maybe it should only be a regular spacebar character.

I went in the sessions window and hit the add button and then put compiz for
the name and at the command put compiz --replace. I left the comment box blank.

I then rebooted to restart X. But when the machine rebooted I just got gnome
again and not what I imagine compiz to be like when it fires up.

But the gnome desktop was a bit impaired. For example, the root terminal
windows can't be resized and the can't be moved around. It's the same with the
browser windows. But I am able to send this email etc.

The nvidia card is apparently still working.

I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas as to what is wrong here.

I appreciate the assistance I have received so far on the list. I have been
encouraged to buy a new card for the desktop PC as a result of the help I got
working on my laptop nvidia card and soon I will fix the machine I use at work
in the same way.

For me, getting the compiz working is a good discipline as well as being useful.

Regards

Michael Fothergill

Yes.

This is o.k., except one change. See below

I noticed that the Option parameters etc sit at what appear be fixed tab
points along the line and used the tab character to jump to them before
 typing in the entries.

I hope this was OK. If not please warn me.

At first the modified xorg.conf while would not run. This is because you
have to add a return character after the last EndSection entry to generate
a new linw in the file. The parser in X11 doesn't understand it without
 this and won't execute.

Maybe you should edit manually ?

I also have tabs between e.g. Render Accel and true. I hope this is OK
too. Maybe it should only be a regular spacebar character.

Yes, this is o.k.

I went in the sessions window and hit the add button and then put compiz
for the name and at the command put compiz --replace. I left the comment
 box blank.

No, this is wrong. As normal user start a terminal, and then enter

compiz --replace

to get it started.

If it fails, you can switch back with

kwin --replace

Alternative (and when everything is working fine) you can install the
package fusion-icon to get a nice click button

I then rebooted to restart X. But when the machine rebooted I just got
gnome again and not what I imagine compiz to be like when it fires up.

No reboot ! If you want to get it always run at start, do this:
Create a new file ~/.kde/Autostart/compiz.desktop, with the following content

[Desktop Entry]
 Encoding=UTF-8
 Exec=compiz –replace gconf  kde-window-decorator
 GenericName[en_US]=
 StartupNotify=false
 Terminal=false
 TerminalOptions=
 Type=Application
 X-KDE-autostart-after=kdesktop

But the gnome desktop was a bit impaired. For example, the root terminal
windows can't be resized and the can't be moved around. It's the same with
the browser windows. But I am able to send this email etc.

The nvidia card is apparently still working.

I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas as to what is wrong here.

RE: problems reinstalling nvidia cards after crash of Xorg.conf compiz edit forced OS reinstall...

2008-04-25 Thread Michael Fothergill

I have fixed the problem of installing the nvidia kernel source.

I had written nonfree instead of non-free (forgot the hyphen!) in the
respository description and so apt couldn't find the right packages in sid.

The problem I have now is one that has I think been mentioned in another post
on this site where running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg wouldn't let me choose
the type of graphics card as nvidia as it did the last time I got the nvidia
card successfully installed and configured. It stops after sniffing around at
the keyboard and mouse stuff.

It shuts up shop, writes a version of the xorg file with something weird like
xorg.2008042508 after it and says it is worried about overwriting a special
modification of the xorg configuration.

It then uses the vesa dumb graphics card setting to display the screen and
ignores all the work I did installing the nvidia kernel.

I will keep hacking away at it and I will get there in the end.

Thanks for help from everyone on the site. You are real gents.

problems reinstalling nvidia cards after crash of Xorg.conf compiz edit forced OS reinstall...

2008-04-24 Thread Michael Fothergill

Dear Debianists,

I successfully installed and configured my nvidia card on my hp laptop.
Everything was going well until I got too
ambitious and tried to install compiz. I edited the xorg.conf file to include
the instructions to get compiz working
but when I rebooted X11 booted up gnome etc (but not compiz for some reason)
and when I opened a root
terminal to try to edit the xorg.conf file to look for clues as to why the
compiz didn't start the root terminal

I have used the same strategy as I did in the previous successful attempt but

Somehow apt can't find stuff in the same repositories that it could do a few

I would appreciate people's comments on this.

you have a incomplete installation of exim, that needs to be corrected...

How do I go about fixing exim4 ?

I tried reinstalling it from my dvd but it didn't help...

Suggestions welcome.

And the command is compiz --replay (just take a look at the

Good luck !

Compiz window decoration

2008-04-12 Thread Simon Vos
Hello everyone,

I have a little problem with the compiz windowmanager in gnome, The
window decoration is not visible, or sometimes its glitched, but only
when the window is not the active window. Is there anyone else with this
problem? At first I thought it would be a little bug in compiz, but I
haven't seen a change in this, so it might just be me.

Hello List,

I had some trouble with decoration at the beginning:
since I checked the `Window Decoration' in CCSM,
everything looks fine (as far as decoration is concerned,
as, for example, `Group and Tab Windows' does not work
for me).

hth,
Jerome

Re: compiz: no spencil buffer

2007-01-14 Thread HubertB
AFAIK this is not a bug in compiz. It is a driver problem. I'm having
this error on a Matrox G400 and I also don't know how to fix it (maybe
its just a missing line in xorg.conf...). I bought a ATI RadeOn 9250 and
now compiz works very good with the free xorg driver (no propritary
bullshit).

BTW: I think this buffer is called stencil-buffer and not
spencil-buffer :-)

Sorry, I first simply pressed reply, so my answer wasn't send to the

It works substantially better if you raise the vram size to, say, 128MB
in xorg.conf.

What is the option to increase vram size.

The default is normally way too small for 3D. (Of course,

you lose system memory doing this)

As it has already been pointed out, compiz is meant to replace your actual
WM. Please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I suspect you haven't properly
configurated it.

What isn't working?

Your window manager is managed either by your display manager (which
handles the graphical login) or by your .xsession file.

What does glxinfo say on that setup by the way (I have never tried doing
3D support on an intel graphics device before). Do you have the
libgl1-mesa-dri package installed (which provides the DRI component for
X for a bunch of video chips)?

So I can't see anything wrong with the config of X at least.

With gnome (desktop), some possible window managers are metacity and
sawfish

Nautilus is the file manager of GNome.

compiz can be used as a replacmeent of sawfish/metacity

So you have to *replace* the running window manage.

for that, try:
compiz --replace

I just got it working (under KDE?!). The only difference from what you've
mentioned is that I use compiz --replace gconf, followed by either GTK or
GNOME window decorator. both work.

I thought it would be a waste of time, cumbersome eyecandy and such, but this
thing appears to be much faster and lighter than the built-in KDE support for
the composite extension. Sweet :)

I was asking this because with the new nvidia drivers, you don't need
to use AIGLX anymore. GL_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is directly
implemented in the driver.

Therefore you can use direct rendering and gain much performance.

Playing with compiz I've found that it always uses indirect rendering,
because of this wrapper (/usr/bin/compiz):

#!/bin/sh

# start the gtk-window-decorator if present
if [ -x /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator ]; then
   /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator --replace
fi

# always load the gconf plugin
/usr/bin/compiz.real --strict-binding --indirect-rendering --use-cow
$@ gconf

Compiz + AIGLX + Nvidia HOWTO

2006-10-01 Thread Jack Malmostoso
Hi list,

I'm posting it here for future reference. Sorry if someone isn't
interested at all.

These steps work on my AMD64 X2 3800+ + Nvidia 6600GT + Asus A8N-E system.
All packages are taken from official Debian repositories, no need to
compile *anything*. Performance of 3D applications and video playback does
*NOT* degrade as when using XGL.

You can see a screenshot of the expose'-like effect here:

http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/9021/debiancompizaiglxbq3.jpg

0) Prerequisites: a supported nvidia video card; Xorg 7.1. I run this on
the newest Debian 2.6.18-1 kernel.

1) Install the beta nvidia video driver ( 1.0.9XXX), you can find it in
experimental. There is plenty of documentation about it, I recommend the
module assistant method explained here:

http://home.comcast.net/~andrex/Debian-nVidia/index.html

2) Modify your /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the following way:

- Make sure Section Module looks like this:

Load bitmap
Load dbe
Load ddc
Load dri
Load extmod
Load freetype
Load glx
Load int10
Load record
Load type1
Load v4l
Load vbe

- In Section Device add:

   Option XAANoOffscreenPixmaps

- In Section Screen add:

   Option AddARGBGLXVisuals True

- Add this new section:

Section Extensions

   Option Composite Enable

EndSection

- Make sure you have DefaultDepth set to 24 and no other Depth at a
higher value

3) Install all compiz packages (they are in unstable):

# apt-get install compiz compiz-core compiz-gnome compiz-gtk
compiz-plugins

4) Restart the X server, log in, open a terminal and issue:

$ gtk-window-decorator
$ compiz --replace --use-cow --indirect-rendering gconf

If that works, you can add the two commands to your startup commands or
create a script that will be executed at login.

5) Enjoy!

What happens when the kernel is upgraded? Does it break?

My setup is different, I'm not sure why. The dri module isnt loaded,
and nvidia's nvidia driver is loaded instead of nv. glxinfo indicates
that direct rendering is not enabled, though it is happening.

My main concern is what happens when the kernel gets upgraded.
I used to re-run the nvidia installer. Now that I use
module assistant, I can't wait for the next kernel upgrade to see what happens.
