Intel is the only company (that I am aware of) that has open source
drivers that fully utilize the hardware but they are not known for
being high performance or inexpensive video cards.

AMD has recently released specs for ATi chips, so in the future their
cards _may_ be a viable option.

nVidia has yet to show any interest in opening their drivers or
releasing specs (probably because of third party code/patents they've
licensed).

So what video card has an Open Source driver that can access all
hardware accellerated functions? In my case, I would like the hardware
mpeg convertions to work. I have an Nvidia EN7300GT card and get much
better picture quality when watching DVDs full-screen with the
debian-packaged Nvidia driver than with the nv driver.

The card only cost me $40 CDN so I don't mind replacing it with a better
card if anyone can recommend an OpenSource alternative.

Doug.

Which is one more reason -- as if you needed another one -- NOT to use
binary-only drivers. Why are the IT ministries of the world not standing up
for our RIGHT to access the Source Code and BANNING binary-only drivers?

Keep it i-tal, buy only hardware which has Open Source drivers; and keep
campaigning to your elected representative. We need Freedom Three as much
today as we ever have.

I had a heap of trouble with 100.14.11 on my 6800 (NV40) card.
Erroneous lines were drawn regularly, and sometimes one of the heads
would just switch off. NVRM Xid messages were reported by the kernel
module regularly.

These symptoms can suggest fan failure but nvidia-settings reported
normal temperatures.

Yesterday I downgraded to 100.14.09 and it is perfect again.

Yes, upgrading to 100.14.11 let the bug appear. Same 100.14.19. A good website
to test for me, was "www.lpi.org", a site with a lot of frames.

Anyway, as I told, if 100.14.11 is working fine, then 100.14.19 will do, too.

And the bug is only at 64-bit-systems, my 32-bit-system is working fine with
all versions.

Just see the discusion here:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=98638

This is exactly the same, I discovered !

Hello all,

I am using since its launch the 100.14.11, and upgraded last night to
the 100.14.19 on my box, amd64 x2 4200 with 7600GT, kernel
2.6.21-2-amd64, and everything is working fine. Can you provide a way
to reproduce your bug?

Thanks

hi !

I have had same problems so i decided to use *last* beta driver form
nvidia.com (

100.14.06 at that time), works fine both on i386 and amd64.

The newest driver from nvidia's page also freezes my amd64 OS, i've not
tested it on i386 debian.

nvidia-glx 100.14.19 freezes the whole system

2007-09-23 Thread Hans-J. Ullrich
Hello all,

there is a heavy bug in NVidias driver. The bug let the whole system
unexpectly freeze. But, this is not a Debian related problem, it is caused by
the binary part of NVidias accelarator driver and touches most other
distributions, too (like SuSE, RedHat etc.)

Please see the discussion on NVidias website.

This bug is known in version 100.14.11, too and it is only discovered on
64-bit-systems. 32-bit is running fine !

It can be proved, the bug is NOT in the nvidia-kernel-source (dear maintainer,
you did good work, thanks !)

I can advice you, still not to upgrade to the latest driver, as this is also
upgrading xserver-xorg to a higher version, which is incompatible to the
prior versions.

Because of this, downgrading is very, very difficult.

As I saiud, the bug seam to appear only in 64-bit-systems and mostly at 7300GS
cards (NVS 110), but the second thing could not be proved clearly, yet.

So, just stay at 100.14.09.

If you have a running 100.14.11 you can safely update to 100.14.19 !

Please do understand this mail only as advice, I had much much problems, to
get my system running again and I just want to pretend you from the same
problems.

Best regards !

Hans
