Bug#141166: boot-floppies: Network configuration should not use auto for PCMCIA network cards

2002-04-04 Thread Brian Mays

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A; reported 2002-04-04
Severity: normal

PCMCIA network configuration during installation has moved from the
network.opts file to the /etc/network/interfaces file, which is good.
However, the current installation procedure places something similar
to the following in this file:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

The auto eth0 should be omitted since it causes the normal boot
procedure to try to configure the PCMCIA ethernet connection, which is
not available at that time. This will be done later by cardmgr, which
will run ifup eth0 when a network card has been detected and powered
up.

Please remove the auto eth0 from /etc/network/interfaces.

Presumably they're the ones on the ftp site, under
dists/woody/main/disks-i386/base-images-3.0.21-2002-03-18/images-1.44.

The floppy_split invocation was:

  fs=`pwd`/floppy_split
  pwd=`pwd`
  (cd disks-i386/images-1.44  $fs $pwd/basedebs_3.0_i386.tar base 1440)

 lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2002/debian-boot-200203/msg01329.html

And, bah. Obviously I didn't read the bit that says base14, not base.

They'll be fixed with the next mirror pulse.

Cheers,
aj

Translate Debiandoc documents via PO file

2002-04-04 Thread Denis Barbier

[Reply-To set to debian-doc]

Hello translators,

I worked on some utilities to help managing translations of Debiandoc
SGML documents; they are inspired by poxml, designed by KDE documentation
team.
The goal is to extract strings from documents, write them in a PO file,
translate it as usual, and build a translated document by mixing markup
of original document and translated strings. There are many advantages,
e.g. paragraph move between documents cause no more headache.

Here is what I did to upgrade
  boot-floppies/documentation/dselect-beginner.fr.sgml
from English CVS 1.16 to 1.22:
$ cvs update -r 1.16 dselect-beginner.sgml
$ debiandoc2po dselect-beginner.sgml dselect-beginner.fr.sgml
dselect-beginner.fr.po
(there is a warning about a paragraph mismatch, iy is easily found when editing
dselect-beginner.fr.po and looking for a shift between msgid and msgstr)
Fill in PO header
$ cvs update -A dselect-beginner.sgml
$ debiandoc2pot dselect-beginner.sgml  dselect-beginner.pot
$ msgmerge dselect-beginner.fr.po dselect-beginner.pot  db.fr.po
Translate fuzzy and untranslated strings in db.fr.po
$ mv db.fr.po dselect-beginner.fr.po
$ po2debiandoc dselect-beginner.sgml dselect-beginner.fr.po
dselect-beginner.fr.sgml

This package is available under
   http://people.debian.org/~barbier/devel/po-debiandoc/
I will continue to work on it (e.g. marked sections cause trouble)
and will package it when it is ready. But as it seems to be usable for
simple documents, maybe it could already be of some help.

Denis

All of them.

 When is the next mirror pulse?

It varies depending on what mirror you use. They start in
around, uh, five or size hours or so. When ftp.debian.org has a
disks-i386/base-images-3.0.21-2002-04-04 directory you should be right.

You seem to be the first person to actually try these disks, so if you
could send a report if they actually turn out to work, that'd be helpful.

Cheers,
aj

Bug#141166: boot-floppies: Network configuration should not use auto for PCMCIA network cards

Umm, something is rotten in the state of Denmark...

  if (!has_pcmcia)
fprintf(p_file, auto %s\n, netinterface);
  fprintf(p_file, iface %s inet dhcp\n, netinterface);

...so it must not have set has_pcmcia, which is supposed to be
set...

  has_pcmcia = 0;
  if (netinterface  NAME_ISDIR(/proc/bus/pccard, nc_statbuf)) {
snprintf(prtbuf, PRTBUFSIZE, _(The interface %s (%s) seems to be a PCMCIA card.
Is this correct?),
 netinterface, get_ifdsc(netinterface));
if (bootargs.isquiet || yesNoBox(prtbuf, _(Confirmation)) == DLG_YES) {

Did it display this confirmation dialog? Did /proc/bus/pccard
exist?

 I guess it's a bit late for this change since it probably means that we

Actually that would be:
http://www.debian.org/releases/woody/i386/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html

it mentions (incorrectly) the boot flavors that will be found on the 3.0
CD's; so that needs to be updated anyway.

The 2.4bf kernel has actually been available for quite some time, I am
just suggesting that it be the 'default' kernel for the i386 CD#1. It solves
many problems when installing on newer hardware, whos function/devices
are not supported by older kernels.

- --side note, I have tested this change, burned a disk, and done a few
test installs, and actually it has worked flawlessly for me.not that that

it still says that one is installing version 2.2 (potato) [humm]

I disagree, 2.4.x kernels have been out for over 2 years.we should
not release a new version of Debian with such an outdated kernel !

Yes, the bf2.4 kernel is described in the woody release notes as an
experimental flavor. The default kernel for woody on i386 is 2.2.
Putting an experimental non-default kernel on the first CD is probably
not a good idea.

However, debian-boot doesn't decide what the default kernel is on
i386 (who does?). If someone wants to revisit the question of what
the default kernel should be perhaps such a discussion is appropriate
on debian-devel. In any case, I doubt such a change so close to
release is possible.

   If you look at the archive for this file, you'll see i386 and ia64 files
   are very different. For example, ia64 has this at the top of the contents
   page:

   [ previous ] [ Contents ] [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] [ 7 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ]

 [...]

  Yes, what's going on is a new version of the debiandoc-sgml package which
  introduces several new things (and yes, I'm to blame for all this :-):

   - a reorg of the navigation bar to make it easier to move around in the
 document
   - expanding the contents links to make them easier clickable
   - addition of the links in the header so browsers that support them can
 make use of it

  Unfortunately, the text based browsers 'links' and 'lynx' don't support the
  option to view these latter links optionally, like e.g. Mozilla can. There's
  already a wishlist filed to add an option to debiandoc2html to add these links
  only if indicated. And wishlists have been filed against 'links' and 'lynx'
  to support links.

 But changing this now give them very few time to implement it :(
 You could at least add an option to debiandoc2html to disable these links,

That's what the wislist is about. Will be implemented for woody.

 I guess many people will be annoyed by them.

 Moreover, have a look at http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/
 There are only 2 links:
   link rel=next href=about.html
   link rel=contents href=cover.html#minitoc
 because it does not make sense to make all these links available.

Well, apparently the people to wrote the standard thought otherwise... Maybe it's
a matter of getting used tot them combined with personal taste. That's why it would
be good if browsers support selecting which links to show, if any.

 Other pages have 3 links, to previous, next and toc pages.
 This looks like the right thing to do.

Well, file a wishlist with your wishes. I'm always open to suggestions. And often
the only way to get such suggestions is by doing the wrong thing, unintentional
(like in this case) or intentional.

Thanks,
Ardo

  But changing this now give them very few time to implement it :(
  You could at least add an option to debiandoc2html to disable these links,

 That's what the wislist is about. Will be implemented for woody.

Thanks a lot, I did read this wishlist bug only after sending this mail.

  I guess many people will be annoyed by them.

  Moreover, have a look at http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/
  There are only 2 links:
link rel=next href=about.html
link rel=contents href=cover.html#minitoc
  because it does not make sense to make all these links available.

 Well, apparently the people to wrote the standard thought otherwise...

I disagree.  From
 http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/links.html#edef-LINK

 This example illustrates how several LINK definitions may appear in
 the HEAD section of a document. The current document is
 Chapter2.html. The rel attribute specifies the relationship of the
 linked document with the current document. The values Index, Next,
 and Prev are explained in the section on link types.
  !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd;
  HTML
  HEAD
  TITLEChapter 2/TITLE
  LINK rel=Index href=../index.html
  LINK rel=Next  href=Chapter3.html
  LINK rel=Prev  href=Chapter1.html
  /HEAD

I can't see in HTML specs what makes you think that all documents should
be linked from every page.
