Lloyd's minor issues with current (20020813) install.en.pdf
Hello amazing contributors to the free world, Been a couple of years since I have done a debian install. Three minor issues with the current (20020813) install.en.pdf: 1. 'safe' in the context of the floppy images is not described. Further, it would be useful to have a reference back to "4.2.2 Choosing the Right Installation Set" in "11.2.3 Description of Installation System Files", particularly as related to http://www.debian.org/distrib/floppyinst 2. "3.7 Installing Debian GNU/Linux from a Unix/Linux System" seems out of place. I also think I understand the good reasons why it is there, but a counter argument is that in theory something could work on BSD, and not necessarily work on Debian GNU/Linux -- ie. see "3.8 Pre-Installation Hardware and Operating System Setup". It seems that this work best as an appendix with reference back to sections 1-3. Three point seven seems to end really leaving a non-Debian familiar person hanging. Is the next step to see the later steps in 8 or 9 or ... ? 3. I am surprised that '/boot' is not listed in 6 the "a list of important considerations regarding directories and partitions." Is mounting it read-only or better yet, not at all no longer a worth while activity to setup toward? All and all an excellent manual, best regards, Lloyd D Budd -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2.4.19 custom boot-floppies
Hello Having successfully compiled a custom 2.4.19 kernel for ide raid support (and stripping out all modules etc), I created a set of boot-floppies from the bf2.4 set. On mounting rescue.bin, I dropped the new kernel in, ran rdev.sh etc, edited install.sh, making VERSION=2.4.19 . Installation runs perfectly, and correctly creates vmlinux-2.4.19 etc under /boot, but when the system reboots, I receive a "can't open /lib/modules/2.4.19/modules.dep" error. The reason is simple - the 2.4.19 folder doesn't exist. Instead, I have a 2.4.18-bf2.4 folder. It seems that perhaps I've missed changing a VERSION variable somewhere, to instruct the installer to automatically create a correct 2.4.19 folder under /lib/modules/ , rather than the default 2.4.18-bf2.4. Am I trying to do something (i.e. use a later kernel) that the boot-floppies can't / weren't intended to do? Regards, David

Possible r3 Installation Bug
Hi, I've just been installing Debian 3.0 (not sure exactly which release) and I have experienced some problems ... these occurred after the first installation restart. It may be my system though neither Windows nor SuSE Linux have any real problems with it ... being a computer freak my system is arguably a little more complex than the average user. The following is what it is: CPU:P4/1.7 Motherboard:ASUS P4E with Promise Raid Lite & Sound Memory: 512Kb/PC133 Video: ABit Siluro (nVidia GeForce2 64Mb AGP) Storage:Array 1: 10Gb, single disk (/dev/ataraid/dp0) Array 2: 60Gb, two disks (/dev/ataraid/dp1) LS120 ZIP 100 Liteon DVD Conventioanl CD Network:Compaq/Intel EPro100 Other: Hauppage PCI TV Card. During pre-reboot install it correctly identified the DVD drive as the source (/dev/cdrom) but after reboot (where it asks whether you want to update or whatever by FTP/HTTP/CDROM etc.) it doesn't accept this (/dev/cdrom) as the CDROM. I would have tried putting it in the other CD but that's not a DVD and my source is. I've tried a number of other sources (guesses) i.e. /dev/cdrom1, .../cdroms, .../ dvd, .../media, .../dvdrom and the same but using /mnt in place of /dev with no luck. Any ideas? Keyword here is "should" :) I can understand if you want to have some sort of policy on what a menutest script should do and not, but I'm more pragmatic and feel that if a menutest script can be improved by using debconf to make it more accurate (and thus better for the end user) then my opinion is that it shouldn't be disallowed. > | In any case, the code right now is broken, since the text buffer > | containing '>/dev/null' is used for stat() as well as system(). > > that's bad, you fix?
