Some menu items contain a verb, other are noun forms. Should all items
be consistent in English?

But current po-debconf don't do that, you have to put it manually.
Next version will support comments as introduced by latest dpkg in
control files, so I am not sure this is an issue.

Would it be possible and sufficient to include the template name

Version 1.34 is already available in "testing". So, I don't think
my patch will causes tasksel to be outdated in "testing".

Bug#213360: partconf-mkfstab: fstab creation broken

2003-09-29 Thread Sebastian Ley
Package: partconf-mkfstab
Severity: grave
Tags: d-i
Justification: renders package unusable

Searching for the reason why grub-installer fails to install grub, I had
a look at partconf-mkfstab.

When I just run through the normal install process and select to use
this program to create the fstab (instead of autopartkit) it seems that
nothing happens at all. A look at /target/etc/fstab reveals an fstab
with only the placeholder string for unconfigured systems in it. This
might be a bug in main-menu though, subject to further investigation.

A manual invocation of /var/lib/dpkg/info/partconf-mkfstab.postinst
actually creates an fstab, but with a bogus proc entry int it, reading:

/dev/hda /proc proc defaults 0 2

This patch will be in the next release. I have to make sure tasksel 1.34
gets into testing first (maybe it already is, I am offline).

If you have more time for these issues, aptitude uses the same task list
as does tassel, does not currently use the translated tasks, and of
course it needs to wrap the text properly when it does get support for
translated tasks. Thanks for your work.

Bug#213333: cdebconf - lists should support selection via id

2003-09-29 Thread Bastian Blank
Package: cdebconf
Version: N/A

i think cdebconf should support selection of a list value via an id.
this makes it much easier to set a default value for a generated list or
read the value for such lists. also it makes the handling of static
lists easier because the code don't need to know the real value.
the list syntax may use a character like # to split id and text.

Bug#213291: partconf-mkfstab: Creates incorrect fstab entries

2003-09-29 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: partconf-mkfstab
Version: 0.06
Severity: important

After running /var/lib/dpkg/info/partconf-mkfstab.postinst, the
content of /target/etc/fstab is not quite correct. This is the entry
for /proc/:

  /dev/sda1 /proc proc defaults 0 2

The device is bogus, and the backup pass value should be 0, not 2.

The entries for /floppy and /cdrom also uses backup pass value 2, but

OldWorld PPC isn't an architechture. Its a segment of PPC. The only issues we have
between oldworld ppc and newworld is the way they boot. Newworld ppc
has cd boot support whereas oldworld doesn't. I wrote about this in one
of my other emails.

I have begun to work on getting oldworld to boot. Basically the idea is
to take two floppies, one with the kernel and the other with the initrd
if we can fit and have the kernel be the one kickstarting the cd. in
the following way the command line should like this.

boot: initrd=/dev/fd0 root=/dev/

Should the title be the same as the menu entry? That is, should
each package have a main-menu/ template that begins with
[TITLE]? For example,

 Template: main-menu/anna
 _Description: [TITLE] Load installer modules

Hell no, we should decide on one approach and stick to it, inconsistency
is bad for your health. I move that only main-menu should set titles. As
we discussed in Oldenburg, having the titles consistent with the menu

No, in fact these comments are introduced to distinguish several
identical msgids which may have different translations based on
the context. Usually if a gettextized string is preceded by a
comment, it is automatically inserted in PO files, this is
the most common way to put comments in PO files.
As debconf has no support for comments, I did not want to decide
of a comment format, and putting extra markup in msgids is the
only solution. Kenneth Christiansen (one of the intltool upstream
authors) told me that they did use this format (i.e. in Perl
regexp /\[\s[^\[\]]*\]$/) in Nautilus and were quite happy with it,
so I get it too.

Dpkg has introduced some comment support in control files, so I will
make po-debconf recognize these comments very soon.

I think we should create $filesystem-module-udebs for most of the
architectures. This includes hfs for powerpc, *fat/ntfs for intel based
machines, ffs for some *bsd based archs and so on. With those modules,
we can extend the fstab generation process to include such foreign

With switching to 2.4.22 we have everything in place to create and mount

If I modprobe reiserfs manually and restart partconf, the reiserfs

d-i beta release powerpc

2003-09-29 Thread Gaudenz Steinlin
hi thorsten and all the others

I have found the last bug that stops us from releasing a beta for
powerpc. The code to select a default kernel in kernel-installer was
missing for powerpc. The attached patch fixes this at least for
newworld. I don't know about the others.
I propose you prepare a final cd-image which should be good for beta
release. Joeyh proposed we should simply provide an image and tell aj
where it is and he will make a first "offical" beta release. I think we
should keep the speed and good bug fixing spirit of oldenburg and push
things a little bit, so nobody will blame us in the end for delaying the
release of sarge.
At home I will review the testing instructions sebastian posted to dda
and make a short "powerpc beta addendum" if needed.

btw the default kernel selection code in kernel-installer is a little
bit hackish, because most of the things are hardcoded there. It would be
good to have a simple mechanism to define default kernels.

currently only sparc sets image_in_boot for the kernel-image. this
breaks grub if /boot is an extra partition. i prefere to set this

Yes, di can replace FAI.

Every question asked is stored in a database, so its possible to store the
configuration after installation and with a non-interactive frontend do an
automatic install.

However there are still packages that don't use debconf for their
configuration. (Search for [EMAIL PROTECTED] and debconf on BTS)

And there is afaik also the problem of storing partition settings if you
don't use "automatic partitioner".

I propose to use sfdisk at end of partition step to store
partition-settings in debconf.

Then sfdisk can be used to "restore" this settings again.

Steinar also managed an almost autoconfiguration by setting priority to
high.

But that still needs work. :)

d-i - subarchitecture stuff

2003-09-29 Thread Bastian Blank
hi folks

anna will use a new control field in the next version. it is called
subarchitecture and will restrict the selection of this package only if
it runs on this subarch.

also this information should be used by kbd-chooser, which currently
does this stuff themself.

i will introduce a new template into rootskel
(debian-installer/kernel/subarchitecture) which should be written while
the first hardware detection run.

You could put the harddisk of this box in another computer with more ram
for installation or rebuild boot-floppies without all the languages and
put a minimal kernel (2.2) on the boot disk.

I'm relativly sure that this is doable, but running apt with 8 MB will
take ages for anything!

2003-09-29 Thread Thomas Lange

> How do di and FAI relate,
FAI does everything which is done in di but without any
interaction. FAI was designed to do mass installations of the OS and
all applications. di is only designed for the installation of one
computer you are sitting in front of. FAI can also partition you local
hard disk using a smart configuration file. di uses cfdisk (for i386)
to partition your harddisk. This is a lot of manuall work and not very flexible.

> Will di replace FAI?
No. FAI is mostly used for network installation. CD-ROM installations
using FAI is an ongoing project. FAI has the advantage over di, that
it must not fit on a floppy. Since it mounts its root file system via
NFS, it can have a lot of software available during the installation,
and does not need to split the installer into many pieces to save disk
space.

> Will FAI use di?
FAI does everything non interactive which is done in di, without using
di. It does not need anything from di, although it uses mostly the same
unbderlining tools and commands to install the OS and software.

After di ist finished you have a base system installed and configured
on your local disk. Then it's up to you to install and configure
additional software and applications. Even tasksel is not called
during di.

FAI installs the base system using debootstrap, which is also used by
di. Then FAI uses its class concept to install software using tasksel
and apt-get install. Finally some scripts are called to adjust the
system (OS and applications) to your local needs. di can't do this.

> Is di only for interactive installation?
AFAIK yes. But there are plans to support non interactive
installations. But di has no class concept to support mass
installations. Non interactive installations using di will be more a
system like starting di and insert a floppy which include some predefined
answers to all questions of di.

Please file a bug report against the kernel requesting an
hfs-module udeb.

It's missing the unix socket module, which is supposed to be
compiled in to the kernel in an upcoming kernel package. In the
meantime, I've included the socket-modules udeb.

Network support is not included on the CDROM image. It is added
once you run "Load installer modules".

I'd prefer an hfs-modules udeb instead.

This is syslog whining because it can't find the unix socket
module. We should add the socket-modules udeb to the cdrom
package list. I've heard such support will soon be compiled into
the kernel, at which point we can remove it.

> That might explain why there weren't any Configure Network items

That's not it. The CDROM image does not include the network
configuration udebs in the initrd, so you have to run "Load
installer modules" before they'll appear.
