Bug#219902: anna: cuts off the last character in the udeb description
On Mon, Nov 10, 2003 at 04:00:12AM +0100, Steinar H. Gunderson wrote: > In the list of modules to fetch, anna seems to cut off the last > character from some of the descriptions. This might be a bit confusing > to the user. :-) Actually this seems to be a libd-i bug. src/package_parser.c:312 and out reads temp = memchr (value->string, '\n', value->size); if (temp) { p->short_description = di_stradup (value->string, temp - value->string - 1); p->description = di_stradup (temp, (value->string + value->size) - temp - 1); } else p->short_description = di_stradup (value->string, value->size); As the second parameter to di_stradup() is the number of characters (excluding the terminating zero), "temp - value->string" is exactly the length of the string excluding the newline, and the -1 subtracts one too much. I'm a bit unsure if I should remove the "- 1" for the second line too, though, since I'm unable to understand what it's actually supposed to be doing. Is the long description supposed to start with an "\n", as it does now? Why the () around "value->string + value->size"? It looks like the code fragment is trying to find the end of the string, subtract temp from that (thus finding the length, _including_ both the final and initial newlines), and finally subtracting one to remove the final newline. Should just "temp" be changed to "temp+1" here? Or should there be a "- 2" instead of "- 1", actually? /* Steinar */ -- Homepage: http://www.sesse.net/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#219897: hw-detect: destroys debconf/priority up if run after a failed module
Steinar H. Gunderson wrote: > If one first runs a module that fails (for instance, install LILO on a > non-existant drive, or install base from network with cable unplugged) > and then run hw-detect, weird stuff happens: Can you provide an easier way to reproduce this? hw-detect here does skip loading a few modules that are not present, but that's the closest it comes to failing, and I'm pretty sure I've never seen the priority bumped up to super-critical. I don't understand how the unplugged network cable is interacting with hw-detect at all, really. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: Slow redraws in the debootstrap stage
Leaving aside the cdebconf progress bar resize bug, if I were doing any number of installs over slow serial (more than 1..), I would switch d-i to use the cdebconf text frontend in my install media. Of course we don't currently ship any media with that frontend on them, but it should be an easy change, and make serial installs much more fun. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#219897: hw-detect: destroys debconf/priority up if run after a failed module
Package: hw-detect Severity: important Tags: d-i This has been discussed on IRC earlier, but deserves a bug report so we won't forget it before it's fixed :-) If one first runs a module that fails (for instance, install LILO on a non-existant drive, or install base from network with cable unplugged) and then run hw-detect, weird stuff happens: What actually happens is that hw-detect at some point sets debconf/priority to "". This confuses main-menu profoundly -- current version from sid manages to set pri=4, which is one step _higher_ than critical, calling it "debian-installer/generic_error" of all things. (main-menu from CVS fixes this issue, and sets pri=1, that is, "medium" instead). Even better, right after that, one can spot --> GET debconf/priority GET debconf/priority <-- 20 Incorrent number of arguments in the syslog; the origins of the double GET are rather unclear. What, amazingly, solves the problem is to remove /etc/init.d/pcmcia-cs, touching it instead to create an empty file. hw-detect runs the following code fragment in postinst: # avoid debconf daemon issues.. db_stop /etc/init.d/pcmcia start &1 | logger -t hw-detect which _seems_ innocent enough, but appearently is the source of the problems. This should probably be investigated further. :-) -- System Information: Debian Release: Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux trofast.sesse.net 2.4.23-pre9 #2 Wed Nov 5 17:10:54 CET 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-1 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". beta released
I've just sent a release announcement to debian-boot. I am actually still waiting for tomorrow's dinstall to get the official non-cd images updated in the debian archive, but everything else is in place for the beta now. I've learned some things this time around, but am too tired to articulate them. Better job next time. Consider the gates opened again for changes that were blocked by the beta. We just need to avoid gratuitous changes now, and strive to keep the whole installer working on a daily basis during this kinda-freeze. Bug#219890: ethdetect: Strange main-menu item title
Package: ethdetect Version: 0.56 Severity: minor Ethdetect's menu entry text is "Detect network hardware". However, at DEBCONF_PRIORITY=low, ethdetect's first question is "Would you like me to try to detect hardware ?", and the user can manually choose which module to install. Bug#219888: anna: Give the user full control of modules to be installed
Package: anna Version: 0.043 Severity: wishlist Hello, The anna TODO list contains : | * Include all packages that will be autoinstalled in the question about | what to install, in addition to those that will not be installed. | In corner cases the user mqay need to omit a particular package | from being installed even though it would be normally (think kernel | module udeb with a module that hangs with the given HW or something). The attached patch implements it this way : - A new template (anna/choose-mode) asks the user (priority low) the way udebs should be selected : automatically, propose additional modules (default, current behaviour), full control. - If full control is chosen, automatically selected components are added to the list, preselected. The user can deselect them and they won't get installed. I had to add a new template and change anna/choose-modules. Since i'm not an native english speaker, reviewing the changes may be necessary. If these changes are conflicting with the freeze plans going on, but there is some interest in the patch, i'll keep it in sync with CVS until it can be applied. Note that the only way I can reach the partitionning (=swap-space creating) step without getting out of memory is using these changes (as well as the rootskel patch in #219528). -- Jeremie Koenig <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Index: anna.c === RCS file: /cvs/debian-boot/debian-installer/anna/anna.c,v retrieving revision 1.67 diff -u -r1.67 anna.c --- anna.c 5 Nov 2003 15:49:29 - 1.67 +++ anna.c 9 Nov 2003 23:07:54 - @@ -28,7 +28,7 @@ if (retriever && (p = di_packages_get_package(status, retriever, 0))) { package_to_choice(p, buf, 200); - set_retriever(buf); +set_retriever(buf); } } @@ -42,13 +42,38 @@ return 0; } +static int +choose_mode(di_packages *status __attribute__((unused)), di_packages **packages __attribute__((unused)), di_packages_allocator **packages_allocator __attribute__((unused))) +{ +debconf_fset(debconf, ANNA_CHOOSE_MODE, "seen", "false"); +debconf_input(debconf, "low", ANNA_CHOOSE_MODE); +return 0; +} + +static int +get_choose_mode() +{ +const char *modes[] = { +"let the installer decide", +"offer additional components", +"full control", +NULL }; +int i; + +debconf_get(debconf, ANNA_CHOOSE_MODE); +if (debconf->value) { +for (i = 0 ; modes[i] && strcmp(debconf->value, modes[i]) ; i++); +if (modes[i]) return i; +} +return 1; /* default */ +} static int choose_modules(di_packages *status, di_packages **packages, di_packages_allocator **packages_allocator) { -char *choices, *package_kernel, *running_kernel = NULL; -int package_count = 0; -di_package *package, *status_package, **package_array; +char *choices, *choices_sel, *package_kernel, *running_kernel = NULL; +int mode, package_count = 0, package_count_sel = 0; +di_package *package, *status_package, **package_array, **package_array_sel; di_slist_node *node, *node1; struct utsname uts; @@ -114,8 +139,8 @@ package->status_want = di_package_status_want_unknown; di_log (DI_LOG_LEVEL_DEBUG, "ask for %s, matches kernel", package->package); } - else if (package_kernel) - continue; +else if (package_kernel) + continue; if (package->priority >= di_package_priority_standard) { package->status_want = di_package_status_want_install; @@ -138,22 +163,39 @@ /* Slight over-allocation, but who cares */ package_array = di_new0(di_package *, di_hash_table_size((*packages)->table)); +package_array_sel = di_new0(di_package *, di_hash_table_size((*packages)->table)); /* Now build the asklist, figuring out which packages have been * pulled into instlist */ +mode = get_choose_mode(); for (node = (*packages)->list.head; node; node = node->next) { package = node->data; -if (package->status_want == di_package_status_want_unknown) -package_array[package_count++] = package; +switch (package->status_want) { +case di_package_status_want_install: + if(mode < 2) break; + package_array_sel[package_count_sel++] = package; + package->status_want = di_package_status_want_unknown; +case di_package_status_want_unknown: +package_array[package_count++] = package; + break; +default: + break; +} } qsort(package_array, package_count, sizeof(di_package *), package_array_compare); -choices = list_to_choices(package_array); +choices = list_to_choices(package_array); +choices_sel = list_to_choices(package_array_sel); debconf_fset(debconf, ANNA_CHOO

net booting
Hi list-members! I am new to this list. I intend to do some test installations. I have one modern laptop, and a couple of older (first generation of Pentiums) to play with. Since none of the older computers can read CD-RW discs, I am interested in trying to net boot (dhcp, tftp and nfs (or a large initrd)) them instead. However, with the new installation system it is not obvious to me how to do it. No, please don't revert. cdebconf (like debconf) is supposed to defer writing of all "seen" data until the end of the script, to fix this very issue. [cdebconf] Backing up can't work if seen questions are skipped
Recently cdebconf behavior has been changed to not display already seen questions, in order to help non-interactive installations. But this change makes back up quite useless, because one cannot go back and forth without trouble, some questions are skipped. So I would like to revert this change, is it okay? Therefore I ignored it. And my regular posts for people to test them don't count ? My quest to understand how the different kind of powerpc hardware work and boot ? Not to speak that i lost more than a week of work because debian-installer ate my harddisk, and the fact that i need 5 hours and more to compile it and more than one hour to upload it. Also, i have been working With Chris, Gaudenz and Thorsten to get a kernel ready which will work with miboot and floppies on old-world pmacs. And i _TOLD_ you about this last week on irc, so why couldn't you tell me about your freeze schedules back then ? I would have uploaded earlier if i had known, or tried to squeeze more time out of my already tight schedule. I didn't upload earlier because i was plagged by a bug which stopped me from installing the kernels on my system, related to dpkg not being able to handle the 30 char filename limit of my amigaos boot partitions, which i took a long time to find. A lot of 5 hours builds happened in that bug hunt. But still, declaring a freeze out of the blue without proper advance warning to the debian-boot mailing list is not a way to handle, and it will only make for delays of the final release. And are you sure the current state of the frozen d-i is even able to handle all the arches and subarches debian sarge is supposed to support ? I seriously doubt it for the powerpc subarches, as seen with what happened to my harddisk, but what about the 5 or so officially supported architectures d-i wasn't even tried on ? Bug#219829: autopartkit: confusing error message when there are no drives to partition

There is no section > about netboot, because nooone has written one. Difference between netinst and businesscard is indeed explained in section 2.1, in section 3 I can't find anything related to explanation of different image favours. My point was only to do a more explicit image classification there's a typo at line 81 in INSTALLATION-HOWTO: 81c81 < Debian. You need the bootfloppy-image.ing, the floppy-image.img and --- > Debian. It should be possible to do both: copy the current modules from d-i to /target, then the system will work; discover will then not be necessary, just a good addition. > > This could be a generic issue: eg if a PC has multiple network > > cards, and the modules are loaded at boot-time in a different order > > to that in d-i, the eth0 / eth1 aliases will be different. > > The detection order is as far as I know, the order on the PCI bus, and > this do not change without moving cards in the PC. For Disks, I believe so, but for ethernet cards, it depends on the order of modules loaded, or aliases in /etc/modules; eg alias eth0 e100 alias eth1 tulip sets things the reverse order to which they are setup in d-i. I have this in my modules setup to "autoload" e100 on reference to eth0. Regards, Alastair -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
