This is a feature, not a bug ;)
If you want to print aligned data, you should be aware that not all
characters fit on a cell, some are 0 or 2 column wide; see strwidth
function in cdebconf/src/strutl.c or libtextwrap1.
I do not know if a program exists to do what you want from a shell.

Hi,
I noticed debian-installer doesn't run bterm-unifont.postinst.
It works correctly by hand.

Hmm, this may be not bterm-unifont bug, but I record this to
bterm-unifont at now.

Thanks,

Bug#237351: busybox-cvs: ash loves to terminate randomly on my SS10

2004-03-10 Thread Joshua Kwan
Package: busybox-cvs
Severity: normal

Within the d-i initrd, ash loves to randomly quit while i'm typing a
command out. It is vastly annoying. I don't know what the cause is, but
I can't reproduce it on my i386...

I did a check to see if we have any other udebs that have postinst
scripts, but are not menu items.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~>for udeb in $(locate \.udeb| grep ftp.root); do if dpkg-deb --info

[1] Has a postinst that sets debian-installer/kernel/subarchitecture.
But archdetect is in our initrds, so nothing will change. Ignore.

[2] Has a long and complex postinst that seems to have been written for d-i.
Dunno if it works. Not installed by default, so it should be safe to
ignore it for now.

[3] Postinst calls ldconfig. Should not exist; bug filed.
This udeb is only used by the gtk frontend stuff, so not a problem.

Summary: looks like we're ok with postinsts for anna now.

Bug#237343: installation-reports: netcfg wasn't called (2004-03-10 image)

2004-03-10 Thread Kenshi Muto
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal
tags: d-i

Debian-installer-version: sid-cd 20040310 image.
i386
Date: 20040311
Method: CD install.

Machine: VMWare, i386

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[O]
Configure network HW: [ ]
Config network: [ ]
Detect CD: [O]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Install boot loader:[O]
Reboot: [O]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:
Because netcfg wasn't executed, second stage goes missing support for
network.

1. Run from CD as normal mode.
2. discover find pcnet32.
3. But d-i menu shows only partman and grub-installer. DHCP setting
   wasn't called.
4. On second stage, I choice FTP/HTTP mirror... Yes, because
/etc/network/interfaces is empty, network can't be used.

(when I choose manually network setup on first stage, it works)

I think something wrong exists around calling netcfg menu.

Thanks,

Roger.
I gave up i18n of fdisk-udeb and change to run this as LANG=C (of
course partitioner is optional step).

I'm waiting Matt's challenging, but if deadline is so soon, I'll
upload arch dependent version.
... OK, I just uploaded 0.006_i386.

I just tried. It works perfectly! Thanks Joey!

P.S.
I received your orkut approved message. Thank you :-)

If that's all it takes, why don't you do it, and upload it?

The change in partconf-mkfstab has already been done, so it should be
safe to upload the new anna, with a little more testing..

Hmm, when is our deadline?

I believe current bterm-unifont crashes big-endian arch (m68k, ppc,
sparc, parisc?).
I tried to create bgf on vore.d.o (sparc), and found this is
incompatible with little endian.
If this problem is hard to fix, please don't hesitate to change
bterm-unifont asarch dependent. :-)

I just committed some changes, (multi)select questions now mimic
debconf readline questions, except that there is no page scroll.
It has to be fixed for the first question, but others look IMO much
better now.

Right, done now.

It seems glibcbug is now deprecated, and glibc now uses bugzilla. I've
filed a bug about this at

Bug#237320: installation-report 3

2004-03-10 Thread Mikolaj Konarski
Package: installation-reports

INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version: 06-Mar-2004, from
http://ftp.pl.debian.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/installer-i386/current/
uname -a: I'm on different install now
Date: 10-Mar-2004
Method: from floppy then network on a previously prepeared ext3 filesystem
from ftp.pl.debian.org, no proxy.
Machine: PC self made from trash parts
Processor: Pentium 120
Memory: 32M RAM
Root Device: IDE, hda1
Root Size/partition table: all on hda1, about 1700M
Output of lspci: I'm on different install now
This is intel/Zappa motherboard with chpiset 430FX,
network card 3Com Etherexpress II TP (8 bit ISA).

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [ ]
Load installer modules: [E]
Detect hard drives: [E]
Partition hard drives: [ ]
Create file systems:[ ]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[E]
Install boot loader:[O]
Reboot: [O]
First kernel start [E]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it
Comments/Problems:

expert mode

Too small memory (32M).
As before I coped by removing all network modules after autodetection,
then removing all ide/pci modules, with the exception of piix.o,
before ide hardware detection.
Then a swap file and it run OK, kernel upload also OK (2.4.25).
GRUB OK, but after the rebott the machine reboots
after it prints something about initrd (~5 lines of messages, total).
Will try with a rescue floppy now.

So it seems, the installed does not work on 32M,
but with additional superexpert mode,
where you choose which debian-installer components to skip
and which modules to choose (no autoprobing), 32M shoudl be enough.
On the other hand 24M seems impossible.
Cheers,
Mikolaj

no depmod -a in ethdetect

2004-03-10 Thread sylvain ferriol
hello
if you are in expert mode ( => set debconf priority to low)
and answer 'no' to ethdetect/detection_type
=> you are unable to load modules with modprobe because no 'depmod -a'
has been executed before.

i put a depmod -a at the beginning of the script

Bug#237295: installation-report 2

2004-03-10 Thread Mikolaj Konarski
Package: installation-reports

INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version: 09-Mar-2004, from
http://ftp.pl.debian.org/debian/dists/unstable/main/installer-i386/current/
uname -a: I'm on different install now
Date: 10-Mar-2004
Method: from floppy then network on a previously prepeared ext3 filesystem
from ftp.pl.debian.org, no proxy.
Machine: PC self made from trash parts
Processor: Pentium 120
Memory: 32M RAM
Root Device: IDE, hda1
Root Size/partition table: all on hda1, about 1700M
Output of lspci: I'm on different install now
Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[O]
Configure network HW: [O]
Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [ ]
Load installer modules: [E]
Detect hard drives: [E]
Partition hard drives: [ ]
Create file systems:[ ]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[E]
Install boot loader:[ ]
Reboot: [ ]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it
Comments/Problems:

expert mode

Too small memory (32M).
I coped by removing all network modules after autodetection,
then removing all ide/pci modules, with the exception of piix.o,
before ide hardware detection.
Then a swap file and it run OK, till the kernel upload,
which didn't succed. It said "preparing new kernle choice, or smething
and then the main window poped up form behind leaving the left
and right edges of the message window visible.
The 3rd console said "Packages and Release downloaded, sorting packages",
or something similar.

I'm in Poland, chossing English language, but Polish timezone.
I would like if the non-expert install guessed Polish mirror
based on the timezone, rather than on language, keyboard, etc.
Now I will revert to 20040306, because then the kernel choice worked
(although only with 2.4* kernels). Wow, I managed to grab 20040306
on some slow mirror. Great. :>

Cheers,
Mikolaj

Right. I did not check the docs for that one. :)

Correct. Changed.

OK. I've commited it.

Bug#237291: d-i m68k mac nativehd success

2004-03-10 Thread Stephen R Marenka
Package: installation-reports

INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version:
uname -a: Linux debian 2.2.25 #1 Thu Jan 15 09:40:15 CST 2004 m68k
GNU/Linux
Date: 9 March 2004, evening
Method: Launched nativehd-initrd with Penguin-19 off a native hard
drive partition. Proxied network install from default us
mirror.
Machine: Apple Mac Centris 650
Processor: 68040/25
Memory: 136MB
Root Device: scsi /dev/sda6
Root Size/partition table:
/dev/sda1-3 Apple partition stuff
/dev/sda4 300M HFS
/dev/sda5 270M swap
/dev/sda6 1.4G root

Output of lspci: n/a

Base System Installation Checklist:

Initial boot worked:[O]

Config network: [O]
Detect CD: [ ]
Load installer modules: [O]
Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]
Create file systems:[O]
Mount partitions: [O]
Install base system:[O]
Install boot loader:[O] (nobootloader)
Reboot: [O]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems:

I booted the mac into MacOS, started Penguin-19 with nativehd as the
ram disk and used kernel parameters: root=/dev/ram ramdisk_size=2.

I basically did a straight through network-based install. The only
non-default d-i choices I made were manual partitioning and
distribution unstable.

I belive that this is fixed in the last uploaded packages of partman.
I observed the same problem during my tests. When I added a command
`sync' after the creation of the swap space the problem disappeared.

sarge-alpha-businesscard: CD-ROM can't be mounted from menu

2004-03-10 Thread Ralph Aichinger
I've got a "new" AlphaServer 1000A 4/266 and wanted to try out
the new sarge images (after having successfully installed some
i386 machines with it). The image I have downloaded yesterday
has file dates from "Mar 8 21:15" in the newest files.

I will supply a more formal report later, if you wish, but
now I am mainly asking if there is an easy workaround for
me to continue installing:

I boot successfully, I get to the menu, but when I try to
mount the cdrom (SCSI, id 4), the installer can't mount it.

It is detected as (retyped):

Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel0, id 4, lun 0
sr0 scsi-1 drive
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision 3.12

The install log has

insmod sd_mod
Using /lib/modules/2.4.24-1-generic/kernel/drivers/scsi/sr_mod.o

as last line.

When I mount the drive manually by mounting

/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target4/lun0/cd

it works just fine, but it gives me following message:

mount: /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target4/lun0/cd is write protected, mounting
read-only
VFS: Can't find ext2 filesystem on dev sr(11,0).
mount: /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target4/lun0/cd is write protected, mounting
read-only
cramfs: wrong magic
mount: /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target4/lun0/cd is write protected, mounting
read-only

When I look at /dev/cdroms/cdrom0, it gives a symbolic link to

yyyscsi/host0/bus0/target4/lun0/cd

with the "yyy"s having dots on them like umlauts or diaresis
characters. I tried en_US as well as en_UK or de_DE just to
exclude a problem with the locale or charset.

Is there a way to continue (e.g. by mounting the CD manually
at the right spot or by overriding the CD-Rom detection)?

main-menu produces lots of unaligned traps btw, if that
makes any difference (though not during trying to mount
the cdrom as far as I have seen).

I will gladly try out everything, as the machine is
without OS and nothing can be destroyed anyway ; )

TIA
/ralph

Comments/Problems:

Yet another successful i386 install(s).

I installed the first time in en_us.

I also installed in Chinese (zh/Chinese), Russian (ru/whatever the
default was) and Korean (ko_something, whatever the first one was)
localizations.

They worked, except Korean which seemed to lock up during the first
hardware detection. en_US did this in one of the installs too, so it
might be flakey/weird hardware. It crashes or something (completely
unresponsive) right after "Skipping Unvailable Module 'ide-floppy'..."

(I don't actually speak any of those languages, I just find it amusing
to see the Chinese, cyrillic and hangul writing in "text mode").

If I try to change the filesystem types in Partman, (eg, setting /home
to XFS), it fails to create the swap partition (Failed to Mount swap
partition IDE master, partition #5 on none). If I have it
autopartition again and accept the defaults, it works.

One major annoyance is that it didn't setup my network card so it'd
work automatically when I rebooted; it seems as though this is because
I have a 'yenta_socket' PCIC, rather than the i8 one, so pcmcia-cs
fails to start, and thus the network fails to come up (alouthgh of
course it worked in the installer and installed over the network). I
have to edit /etc/defaults/pcmcia to set the PCIC to yenta_socket, and
then edit /etc/pcmcia/network.opts to turn on DHCP, and everything
works.

Another weird thing is that in the non-US locales (ru), after the reboot,
the text came out as graphic line characters rather than the nice
cyrillic. It doesn't seem like it truely went into the fb mode, rather
stayed in text mode. Weirdness.

Small notes after Installation

2004-03-10 Thread Alexander Schmehl
Good morning,

during the last weekend I had the oportunity, to test the debian
installer. Nice work you did with it.

Unfortunatly I needed to give the computer back, so I can't send you a
full installation report, but I took some notes during the installation.
I think we used the d-i from 04 of march.

- When choosing what language the installer should use, you come to a
second screen, where you can choose the country. I think it might be
more comfotrable for most people, if the first entry would be the one
with highest population (in my case: german in germany).
- When you choose the keyboard layout, there is one for german keyboard
without deadkeys, but no with dead keys.
- the installation of grub took quite some time, I first nearly thought,
  it was crashed.
- BTW: Lilo got installed, too. I don't know, why.
- The automatic detection of mouse and monitor worked almost perfect,
but right after the monitor detection, apt-get installed some
packages. Since I didn't saw any note, I thought the monitor detection
went wrong. Perhaps it would be a good, to print a small note, what
  was detected.
- I was impressed how easy it was to install and configure XFree86,
however: The XFree konfiguration used US-keyboardlayout with 104 keys,
  which was quite confusing.

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

No GTK interface and my opinion is that we won't have one ready even
for i386 at release time.

So we're talking about text display, which uses newt.

This resumes to "newt should support BIDI". By reading some mailing
lists at arabeyes where Anmar Oueja came with this topic in January, I
understand that first BIDI support is needed in slang and/or ncurses,
then newt BIDI support.

I also understand that BIDI and shaping support are needed for Arabic,
both being scheduled in a due release of fribidi aroundtoday.

Lior and Shlomi, this is up to you

I'm not a coder so I can't even understand what exactly needs to be
done. I can only guess "au pif" as we say in french:-)

I looked at fribidi code very quickly and found some reference to a
kind of "magic" function called fribidi_log2vis which seems to be the
core function for BIDI output support. It seems to me that any string
which needs to be output should be piped first to this function with
the appropriate argument and voila

README excerpt:

The reordering of characters is done through the function:

 void
 fribidi_log2vis(/* input */
 FriBidiChar *str,
 int len,
 FriBidiCharType *pbase_dir,
 /* output */
 FriBidiChar *visual_str,
 gint*position_L_to_V_list,
 gint*position_V_to_L_list,
 gint8 *embedding_level_list
 )

where
 stris the Unicode input string
lenis the length of the unicode string
pbase_dir is the input and output base direction. If
base == FRIBIDI_TYPE_ON then fribidi_log2vis
calculates the base direction on its own
according to the BiDi algorithm.
visual_str The reordered output unicode string.
position_L_to_V_list Maps the positions in the logical string to
positions in the visual string.
position_V_to_L_list Maps the positions in the visual string to
the positions in the logical string.
embedding_level_list Returns the classification of each character. Even
levels indicate LTR characters, and odd levels
indicate RTL characters. The main use of this
list is in interactive applications when the
embedding e.g. level determines cursor display.

In any of the output pointers == NULL, then that information is not
calculated.

IN the fribidi package, the fribidi.c source code seems to be a good
implementation example

Bug#237152: Ultra Enterprise 450 installation report

2004-03-10 Thread Gunnar Wolf
...Searching a bit further on how this is done in OpenBSD, I found
something. First of all, I must note that -by a long shot- I am no C
hacker, I can somehow understand parts of code, but that's about it.

NetBSD does support 16 partitions per Sun disklabel, as told in the
message I quoted in a previous mail. OpenBSD imported this feature in
December 1996, as can be seen in revision 1.5 [1]. The changes can be
found in [2], and are quite simple: If the systemwide maximum number
of partitions per unit (defined in [3], set to 22 in a regular OpenBSD
build) is greater than 8, SUNXPART (I assume it to mean 'Sun eXtended
PARTitions) is defined to the number of extra partitions, and this is
stored just before the disk rotational speed in the disklabel.

Now, back to Linux, fs/partitions/sun.c: After the 128-byte 'info'
field, we have a 292 byte long area with very sparse data (id and
flags, both unsigned chars, eight times, and many spare spaces). This
292 bytes are conspicously similar to the area used in OpenBSD for
storing the extended partitions information:

struct sun_disklabel {  /* total size = 512 bytes */
   char  sl_text[128];
   u_longsl_xpsum; /* additive cksum, [sl_xpmag,sl_xxx1) */
   u_longsl_xpmag; /* "extended" magic number */
   struct sun_dkpart sl_xpart[SUNXPART];  /* "extended" partitions, i through p */
   char sl_xxx1[292-8-(8*SUNXPART)];/* [292] including sl_x* */
   u_short sl_rpm; /* rotational speed */
(...)
};

...Anyway, support _could_ be added to fdisk/cfdisk, parted, the
kernel and whatelse to support over eight partitions in Sparc. This
would surely be a good thing, but I don't think Sarge should wait for
this. This only demonstrates we should presently limit to eight
partitions per disk on this platform (or, as I suggested, try to use
non-Sun disklabel formats if the disk does not have to be booted
from).

...And start bugging Linus for including this support. Hmmm... I think
we will wait a long time for that :)

Bug#237152: Ultra Enterprise 450 installation report

2004-03-10 Thread Gunnar Wolf
Ummm...

About the partitions limit: I found this in fdisk/fdisksunlabel.h (in
source package util-linux):

typedef struct {
   /* (... Many parameters before it) */
   struct sun_partition {
  uint32_t start_cylinder;
  uint32_t num_sectors;
   } partitions[8];
unsigned short magic; /* Magic number */
unsigned short csum; /* Label xor'd checksum */
} sun_partition;

And in the Kernel tree (2.6.3), in fs/partitions/sun.c:

int sun_partition(struct parsed_partitions *state, struct block_device *bdev)
{
/* ... */
struct sun_disklabel {
/* Once again, lots of other parameters... */
struct sun_partition {
   __u32 start_cylinder;
   __u32 num_sectors;
} partitions[8];
unsigned short magic; /* Magic number */
unsigned short csum; /* Label xor'd checksum */
} * label;

So... Well, even if the Sun disklabel allows (or so they say) for more
partitions, it doesn't look like we will be able to do so without
changes to important parts of code that (I think ;-) ) were written
like that for a reason.

I will look also into this, but I think that only the disk we will
boot from requires a proper Sun disklabel. Maybe the installer could
suggest using a different type of disklabel if it is not going to be
the boot disk.

...Let me check how this is managed by the BSDs. I am sure I installed
OpenBSD once in a Sparc with over 10 partitions.

Greetings,

Ummm... Well, support in Parted seems to be stable for Sun
machines. From Debian's parted package description:

  (...)
Parted currently supports DOS, Mac, Sun, BSD, GPT, MIPS and PC98
disklabels/partition tables, as well as a 'loop' (raw disk) type
  which allows use on RAID/LVM.

Parted's page in GNU [1] tells +- the same:

Supported disk labels: raw access (useful for RAID and LVM), MS-DOS
partition tables, Intel GPT partition tables, MIPS partition tables,
PC98 partition tables, Sun and BSD disk labels and Macintosh
  partition maps.

I cannot find authoritative information on this, but I found a post to
debian-sparc [2] stating that there can -at least- be 15 partitions on
a Sparc disklabel under Linux - and even if Linux can't handle more
than that (because of minor number exhaustion - /dev/sda15 is (8,15),
/dev/sdb is (8,16) ), the Sun disklabel format does allow for more.

I found a _very_ old message in NetBSD [3] where it mentions having
this limitation, but I would expect it to be gone by now.

I tried to -just for the sake of it- create over 8 partitions using
fdisk - I got this right away:

  Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sdc (Sun disk label): 27 heads, 107 sectors, 24620 cylinders
  Units = cylinders of 2889 * 512 bytes

 Device FlagStart EndBlocks Id System
  /dev/sdc3 0 24620 355635905 Whole disk

  Command (m for help): n
  Partition number (1-8):

...So it seems this limit is -at least somehow- real. I will look for
further information, but if it is real, at least the installer should
not try to create over seven partitions (plus wholedisk), right?

After the eight partition (/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target3/lun0/part8 -
Excuse me for the extra spaces in what I pasted, blame my terminal)
was created, the next partition that parted tries to create is
/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target3/lun0/part-1 - This seems like an overflow
for a signed three-bit value. (now, why would it be signed? :-/ )

someone to lend it to me. :-(

With the help of the company admin, I was able to create a

I have to disagree here. In a (more or less) big company, you
will always find some people who create a policy ("install with
RAID") and other people, who just have to follow this policy,
even if they do not know about the details. For them, it must
still be easy to set up the machine. As long as there are at
least some experts, this is OK, I think. Even the experts will
prefer an easy to use installer, instead of many(!) manual steps
you have to do, when creating root-on-md without the help of d-i.

Yes :-)

Cheers and many thanks for your hints and the howto document!

LTR languages should look reversed to you, so it sounds as if it is ok.

I'm out of touch with debian-installer (for anyone who wondered what D-I
is). What sort of support is expected from it in regards to LTR
languages? (I myself normally use English in computers so I'm not the
average user to know what is wanted).

Does the D-I uses gtk+2.0? If so it should have BIDI support built in.
Is it completely text based? Then you need to add manual support, is it
only for displaying text, or also for data input?

A request for help about D-I with bidi support is best referred to
linux-il mailing list, there are some very knowledgeable peoples there
regarding bidi behaviour in UIs.

printf doesn't work properly for non-ASCII

2004-03-10 Thread Anton Zinoviev
Hi!

I decided to try how partman works with localised strings and observed
that some of the strings almost overlap on the screen. Investigation
showed that this was caused by printf.

In several places in the code of partman are used commands like

printf "(%5s)\n" $var

The problem is that printf considers the length of the strings in
bytes as length in symbols which is not true for UTF-8. For example
if var='пя' (two Cyrillic letters) then the quoted printf command will
output "( пя)" instead of "( пя)". For Asian languages the
situation can be even worse because there 3 or 4 bytes represent only
one character.

All versions of printf I tested are broken -- the internal printf
command in bash, /usr/bin/printf and busybox. Does someone know how
this can be fixed?

I guess it has to do something with the way the root partition is
detected. after the system is installed, mkinitrd has no problem
detecting that the root partition is on a md-device

When running root on an md I only have 2 problems.
I neeed to put in a delay , lets say 2-5 secs, or else one of the
partitions is reported as beeing in use when the raid is set up. The
other problem is that grub is unable to probe, and fails. The
workaround is to not let grub probe, but insted using symlinks. This is
mainly tested on woody, with packages from skolelinux (slightly
modified, grub is 0.93+cvs20030217-0.skolelinux.1, and initrd-tools is
0.1.48.skolelinux.1)

First of all, to test this I would, as others have pointed out, start
with setting up raid manually. If you need help, take a look at a
mini-how that i wrote for skolelinux-servers. It's located at

http://developer.skolelinux.no/dokumentasjon/skolelinux_softwareraid_howto.txt

People who cant set up SWRaid without an automagic installer, should
not run SWRaid. Because they will not add the extra bits that are needed,
like monitoring setup and so one, and therefor SWRaid would only
provide false security.
But yes, it will be nice to have the possibility to set up SWRaid out
of the box.

Simple BIDI tests for Debian Installer

2004-03-10 Thread Christian Perrier
(Copy to Baruch Evan, libfribidi0 package maintainermaybe you could
help in getting BIDI support in D-I ? Copy to other BIDI languages
translators I'm aware of. Please keep CC list if possible)

While looking at all this BIDI stuff, I made a very simple test:

After "apt-get install libfribidi0" on my system, I did:

fribidi ~/src/debian/d-i/HEAD/debian-installer/tools/languagechooser/languagelist.l10n

This in a gnome-terminal with some hebrew/japanese/russian/arabic
fonts installed. This gave me an interesting result-->while all
left-to-right languages were still properly displayed, both RTL
languages (hebrew and arabic) lines were shown inverted (so I guess
this is the correct output) for the Arabic/Hebrew part only (the
English part was still LTR).

My conclusion is that we probably can have a very very very simple way
to properly display Arabic/Hebrew by just piping the strings we want
to display through fribidi

No idea whether that's really possible but this should give some
hints.

We have to make it, guys. Arabic/Hebrew/Farsi support in Debian
Installer depend on this.

I know nothing about Sun disklabels, but it must be something either
with them or with their support in parted.

Acording to parted something wrong happened to the partition table.
In this situation 'Undo all changes' would also help.

I can not guess what is wrong wrong in the log?

Do you know if/how parted works with Sun disklabels?

Is the debconf readline interface more suitable? I could mimic its

BIDI support in D-i (was: Re: Arabic Farsi support for d-i)

Indeed we currently are missing BIDI support in Debian Installer. This
is one of the main reasons these translations cannot currently be
used, unfortunately...:-(

However, if someone manages to have the needed skills for implementing
BIDI support, then having translations ready will be a major
improvement.

Anmar Oueja (CC'ed) who did the Arabic translation coordination with
people at Arabeyes.org tried to get in touch with some people for
this...but didn't suceed yet.

Maybe your help could bring us the needed manpower.

I cannot properly tell what exactly is needed but again the
debian-boot list is the appropriate place for talking about this.

The BIDI support nearly certainly needs to be implemented in the newt
stuff which is used by debconf/cdebconf.

Some building against libfribidi of whatever...but not being competent
for all this, this is all I can tell.

PS : Hebrew translators are also deeply interested in this.

/me cross my fingers for you being a strong hacker and able to help on
BIDI support

(Incomplete) installation report

2004-03-10 Thread Eddy Petrisor
Sorry for this being a little late and incomplete, but I
haven't been able to find the report I filled when I tried
installing using the new installer..

I used the beta2 floppies installer (last one avilable on
the debian site).
I never got to the second stage (AFAIK the installer
doesn't work for stable, but I tried it anyways).

After the detection of the cdrom and a failed attempt to
connect to the network, I started a console and made a dir
"/target".

Then I typed

cd /[enter]
cd tar[pressed Tab for autocompletition]
[leftarrow][leftarrow][leftarrow] (until I got in front of
the target word)[Del]

The result was that the string "cd arget" was appended to
the existing string (but the previous string was
unaccessable).

Again I am really sorry for this being so late.

the uname result:

Linux debian 2.4.22-1-386 #9 Sat oct 4 14:30:39 EST 2003
i686 unknown

If this info isn't enough, I will try to rerun and
reproduce the bug again (and fill again the instalation
report).

Eddy.

Since I have done it some times now, I did it with "expert" and it all

At reboot I had to edit grub's boot sequence, but that seems to be a
problem with Debian's grub configuration.
