Agreed the "official short names" are ugly ;
eg. "LAO PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC", "LIBYAN ARAB JAMAHIRIYA" for
those countries normally called "Laos" and "Libya". However, sometimes
the short version is the problem too: eg. do we allow
"MACEDONIA, THE FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF", to be shortened to
"Macedonia"? I'm sure the Greeks won't agree to that ...

Ironically, one of the main reasons I created the iso-codes package is
to allow this; if someone wanted to create "Kurdish Linux" and add
Kurdistan as a territory, then they would only have 1 list to override
or correct on Linux, rather than n separate lists of countries and
translations ...
(But I don't want to fork Debian over this issue :-( )

The countries in question have used the list to make their own political
points; but the problem is that Debian deciding to change some names and
not others is no longer being neutral.

In the selection interface, we should use "country/region" instead of a

Comments/Problems:

My Airport card wasn't detected; this is already dealt with I believe.

I placed an "E" in partition hard drives because my hard drive was
already partitioned; the initial setup for this was absolutely transcendent,
but I didn't format my partition and so I had to go back to the "
Partition hard drive" menu item (since the installer didn't want to
install on top of a semi-installed previous attempt). When I did so
all hell broke loose.

It doesn't seem as though the same menus/etc are used between the initial
setup and what happens when you select the menu item for partition hard drive.
I selected /dev/hda4 as my root, and then /dev/hda3 as swap, and in both cases
I said "leave my partition as-is," but swap somehow got the idea that it
should be mounted as /, and the installer complained. I then specified swap
as swap space and it proceeded.

These problems would have been avoided had the same setup been available
as when the installer first goes through, I think.

The real problem is what happened on boot-up. Here is the contents of
/etc/fstab:
# UNCONFIRURED FSTAB FOR BASE SYSTEM

I blame this on the weird partitioner I got on the second run through as well.

Comments/Problems:

At first, DHCP failed since the Debian installer didn't detect my
Airport card. This resulted in the screen background turning red and a
mis-rendered dialogue with no context and a message "Feel free to retry."
This should be changed to at least mention that DHCP failed, and
probably say something about connecting cables and/or consulting with
system administrator about configuration. As it is there's no context:
what exactly are you retrying?

Every so often when I switch between consoles, my screen turns red (and
then will turn blue again for no clear reason).

Partitioning was not very well automated, as I was just dumped into
pfdisk. Luckily I had previously partitioned this drive so I simply
quit. Even so, some better method must exist.

I had previously tried (and failed) to install debian-installer. As such
I didn't reinitialize any disks. When the base system tried installing,
I got an error "couldn't download exim4." I was unable to proceed.

I then tried all over again, but this time I initialized the disk as
ext3 (even though it was already initialized). This time the install
worked.

Right. To fix this, or even check on it, I'll need the output of lspci
and lspci -n. Only a couple of things in discover's current database use
the sungem driver, so if there are more now, I'd like to get them in.
Even if the driver is compiled in to the kernel right now, I'd still
like the entry in the database for completeness sake as well as a
fallback.

Hmmm, yes, that is indeed right. We never found a way to solve this as
the short list is built on the fly.

But, there is AFAIK no bug report about this.or if there is one,
it is not assigned to countrychooser.

Someone should report one, just for the record.

Comparison of usb-discover's uhci list with discover1-data reveals the
following pci ids that are in the former, but not in the latter:

808624c2
808624c4
808624c7

These three are the USB controllers in a Linux Certified LC2000 laptop
which I have on loan. I thought I'd already filed a bug on these, but I
cannot find it. If you need lspci info, I can get that.

808624de
808624d7
808624d4
808624d2

These are from a PIV-based abit motherboard, according to usb-discover's
changelog. Unfortunatly, I don't know any more details.

It seems that it wasn't. Either because youy didn't send it...or
because I missed it..:-)

It is now commited in CVS (iso-codes is managed by CVS, not SVN)

When in doubt, don't hesitate filing a bug report against the given
package. This is the only way to keep track of what's been sent or
what has not.

Bug#241976: missing usb-ohci ids

2004-04-03 Thread Joey Hess
Package: discover1-data
Version: 1.2004.02.08-5
Severity: normal

Comparison of usb-discover's uhci list with discover1-data reveals the
following pci ids that are in the former, but not in the latter:

808624c2
808624c4
808624c7

These three are the USB controllers in a Linux Certified LC2000 laptop
which I have on loan. I thought I'd already filed a bug on these, but I
cannot find it. If you need lspci info, I can get that.

808624de
808624d7
808624d4
808624d2

These are from a PIV-based abit motherboard, according to usb-discover's
changelog. Unfortunatly, I don't know any more details.

Unfortunately, even you choose Traditional Chinese in languagechooser,
you will still get english country/area names in the next screen. You
can see translated names in full country list only. It's an old bug

The problem is that some users in that area will install in English,
especially for servers.
I really think that using the 'really' short names (that is just plain Taiwan
instead of Taiwan, P.. of C..) would not be a bad compromise despite what the
official so called short UN names say.

After all, isn't Linux for a large part about being "free" as in "able to
choose for yourselves" which is what Taiwan has been trying to to for the
past decades.
I think the really short names are often a lot more politically neutral than
the semi-official names in iso-3166. Especially as 3116 is incredibly
inconsistent. _Short_ names should be _short_.

I'm unable to come up with any sensible scenario where one want to
keep the current behaviour.

If the database contain foo and foo-ll, and then is loaed with
identical foo and only foo-nl, I see no reason to throw away foo-ll.

As has been noted in previous discussions on this subject, it is
basically impossible to draw up a list of countries and their names that
does not insult somebody. For Debian, picking an official list, (and
ISO-3166 is _the_ offfical list) is pretty much the only solution.

Please update the zh_TW entries, as discussed before. D-I is designed
that the first question people see is the Language; if they pick zh_CN
they should _not_see Province_of_China.

Alastair

debian-installer: how much memory is needed (on other archs than i386) ?

2004-04-03 Thread Holger Levsen
Hello,

from the beta2 announcement: "Support for systems with only 32 MB of memory
(i386 only)." anybody ot an idea what the requirements for other archs (e.g.
powerpc) are ? I guess they should be roughly the same ?

The lowest I tested was 48mb which seemed fine.

regards,
Holger

Will these users be installing using English or Traditional Chinese as
the language?

Re: Re: Must debian-installer use iso-codes package when choosing country?

2004-04-03 Thread Tetralet
My original question is:

"Must debian-installer use "iso-codes" package when choosing country,
Even though it will hurt some people, like people who living in Taiwan?"
And I think your answer is "YES".

We, the debian users in Taiwan, Hongkong and mainland China, have
discussed about this for several days.
You may visit http://moto.debian.org.tw/viewtopic.php?t=3192 for more
details.

We all consent that to replace "Taiwan" with "Taiwan, Province of China"
is not suitable.
It don't match to the real political situation,
And it will bring a mountain of political disputes.

People who install Debian via debian-installer will find that "Taiwan"
was replaced with "Taiwan, Province of China".
They may not detect immediately that this country code is based on ISO-3166,
But they will think that Debian is discriminating against Taiwan people.
It will not be a very good first impression to Debian users.

And, It is a gross disparagement to Taiwan people.
Thus some of us may refuse to use Debian anymore.
Sorry, but I think it is necessary to repeat again,
I suggest that debian-installer should not use the data form "iso-codes"
package as country code.
We should try to found something else to replace the "iso-codes" package
in debian-installer.

Bug#241932: New installer don't allow to choose ftp as install source

2004-04-03 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Package: boot-floppies
Severity: important

In the new installer it is not possible to choose ftp as install source.
(minimal install CD Beta 3 from
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/i386/beta3/sarge-i386-businesscard.iso)

For some reasons I'm not able to install over http. So I need ftp to do
so. Unlike it is a bad habit this days to transfer files over http which
is like word documents in mails or such think. (Yes, it works. but that
do not means to do it in any case.)

Notice that there already exists a partman-palo package to do this for
hppa. You just need to make some kind of partman-yaboot, I suppose.

Sounds like you have all the pieces you need to write a partman-loop
module that adds loopback support directly to partman.

Just mount /target, edit /var/lib/dpkg/status to mark partman as already
configured, and skip over it in the menu.

AFAIK it only has this problem with hardware that discover cannot probe.

Cdebconf was recently broken to not include /etc/cdebconf.conf. This was
fixed in version 0.59, released on April 1.

Gah, f*cked up looking at the package - it _does_ have the setgid dirs
that you listed. But nonetheless running dpkg-buildpackage and
pdebuild here don't show any problems actually building the
package. Am I missing something here?

Why not just call 'dh_fixperms' in rules to avoid the problem
completely?

loop device install or how to skip partman ?

2004-04-03 Thread Bill Allombert
Hello Debian-installer team,

After testing beta 1 and beta 2, I tried beta 3, with the
same goal in mind: install Debian in a file using a loop
device.

As far as I could see, all beta detected the hardware of
the box fine.

beta 1 and 2 lacked the minimal support to create loop device,
but the situation has improved : now there is a 'dd' utility and 'mount'
support '-oloop' provide we issue modprobe loop before calling mount
(which I found a bit confusing, it would be better if the module was
autoloaded, but never mind). There is no 'losetup' but it is probably not
neccessary.

Now, the problem is that I can't find any way to skip the 'partman'
step of d-i. b-f conveniently detected that /target existed and
allow to go to 'install base system' directly.

So I have not yet be able to complete the installation this time!

Anyway, for all I can see, beta 3 is a huge improvement over beta 2.

The 'expert mode' modules selection suffers from a usability problem:
usually it is easier to select the module we need that the modules we do
not need.

Cheers,

and the debian/ dir is not setgid in the .tar.gz. Can you check this

Yes, and no. As far as I can see, speakup only required a special console
keymap up until recently. The patch and kernel-image packages of
speakup currently in sid/sarge do no longer require a special speakup keymap.
Actually, to tell the truth, I have no idea why the keymap is in there
at all.

Well, I'd certainly like that, but it is a quite intrusive patch, which
is probably not really suitable for default inclusion.

The current state of things is that we have *one* generic
kernel-image-VERSION-speakup package. Building packages for all arch flavours
is way too much overkill right now. A user who uses the access flavour should
ideally have a choice of which kernel she wants to install in the target
system. Speakup users would choose the speakup variant to not loose speech
after reboot, and people who do not require speakup (but use a braille
display for instance) would be free to install an optimized kernel
if they want.

Well, we have a speakup variant of d-i already (the access floppy).
And I'd say kbd-chooser doesn't need to ship a speakup keymap at all.
At least not since speakup does its review mappings internally now.

For info, this is not the only case, so i suppose that debian-installer
is currently broken. I have had a report on pegasos for this, and just
saw Arturo report the same thing on irc on his x86 box.

You can try the just uploading version of the root floppy (2004.04.03),
or an earlier one (2004.03.31 for example).

[Denis Barbier]
> I do not understand, debconf-loadtemplate already allows this, what

As far as I know, it will _replace_ the existing translations, not
just add new ones.

That means that if you have template 'foo' with translations 'foo-es',
and then load a new template file with template 'foo' and translation
'foo-nb', the 'foo-es' translation is dropped. I want the database at
that point to contain both 'foo', 'foo-es' and 'foo-nb'.

Everything seems to be building except for those 3:
build_floppy_boot, build_floppy_root, build_floppy_access

They all fail with "Disk full"

For boot I have those files:

Bug#239761: debian-installer: also with pcnet32 module (vmware)

2004-04-03 Thread Stephen Stafford
Package: debian-installer
Version: N/A; reported 2004-04-03
Followup-For: Bug #239761

Hi,

After a seamless and really quite impressive boot from the
sarge-i386-businesscard.iso (marred only by it failing to run the GUI
installer and so falling back on textmode...not surprising given it's
vmware), the pcnet32 module fails to load, hence the network fails to come
up. This after it all being autodetected when booting from the iso.

This is even stranger given that the output of "dmesg" shows that the module
WAS loaded at boot. Something somewhere removed it again.

Still, the whole thing looks pretty slick, I'm quietly impressed

Cheers,
Stephen

Bug#241850: installation-reports PPC

Package: installation-reports

Debian-installer-version:

Root Device:
Root Size/partition table:

Configure network HW: [ O ]
Config network: [ E ]
Detect CD: [ O ]
Load installer modules: [ O ]
Detect hard drives: [ O ]
Partition hard drives: [ O ]
Create file systems:[ O ]
Mount partitions: [ O ]
Install base system:[ O ]
Install boot loader:[ O ]
Reboot: [ O ]
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Comments/Problems: The only installer problem was the network did not automaticallt
set up DHCP, which worked in earlier versions, however manual set up worked fine.
The yaboot installer worked great, the partition finally created a proper bootstrap.

A side note, I have been trying the daily builds for a month, this days (03/31/04) has
worked best for me, the 04/01/04 daily build gets stuck in a loop trying to modprobe
when installing.

I have not tried the 04/02/04 daily, I am going to wait till the next major beta,
unless I see no one else is doing much PPC testing.
Thanks again everyone for all their work I appreciate Debian very much.

Best

Bug#241847: 3rd of April, daily build powerpc-small root floppy broken

2004-04-03 Thread Holger Levsen
Package: debian-installer

floppy images from
http://people.debian.org/~luther/debian-installer/daily-powerpc-built/current/powerpc-small/floppy/

at 2004-04-03, 10:00:00 CEST 2004

Since I couldn't get a working boot floppy from these images (no idea whether
the image is broken or I had just bad luck with 20 tries and 8 floppies) I
used my old boot floppy from 2004-03-26? from Jeremie König and a new root
floppy made from the above source.

The root-floppy gets loaded, it starts but almost
instantly hangs with:

/build/build/cdebconf-0.58/src/debconf.c:115 (main): Error reading
configuration information
/build/build/cdebconf-0.58/src/debconf-loadtemplate.c:68 (main): Error reading
configuration information

(I also tried three different boot-floppies, the same error. (As expected as
they're read ok and load into ramdisk fine.)

So I guess, the root floppy images are broken :(

regards,
Holger

Ah, no, that has nothing to do with that. It is the second part, once
debian-installer has finished installing the base system, it will
install a kernel (to be used with quik or whatever), so you get a
working system. Nothing to do with your problem.

I have no access to mac hardware of any kind :)

Well, if the problem is with the root.img, knowing what the difference
between the working image and the bad one is, would be a good idea.

Yeah, and packages used which are not in the debian-installer svn, and a
different box used, and ...

Yeah, altough in your case, this will not help, since apparently the
system freezes before going to even boot debian-installer. What i want
is not the debian-installer log, but the kernel boot log. Usually
acquired by serial console (console=ttyS01,115200n8 console=tty0 on my
box) or by plain looking at the kernel log info on the screen (provided
there is such a thing.

optional logging to some kind of loghost (via ssh and/or ftp) as part of d-i,

Bug#238472: discover should not load i810-tco module

2004-04-03 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

[David Nusinow, 2003-03-28]
> I'm not going to release another discover1 update until the current

Package discover1 will not enter sarge as long as bug #238472 have
critical severity.

So you will either have to fix the problem and upload a new version,
or reduce the priority of the problem.

Besides, isn't this better fixed in discover1-data, changing all
entries with i810-tco to ignore instead? These are the entries in pci.lst:

80862410bridge i810-tco82801AA ISA Bridge (LPC)
80862420bridge i810-tco82801AB ISA Bridge (LPC)

8086248cunknown i810-tco82801CAM ISA Bridge (LPC)

I suggest this bug should be reassigned to discover1-data and fixed

Yeah, the boot.img should be mostly ok, since it is nothing more than
the kernel and the miboot stuff.

Maybe you could try loop mounting both root floppies, and compare them.

It would be nice to get some kind of log of what is happening ? No idea
how to achieve this though.

Oh, well, i guess so. Maybe the trick used for building them on a 2.6

(1) Change the default keyboard in kbd-chooser for Turkish to trqu.kmap.
(2) In kbd-chooser prebaseconfig, we can change the settings passed to
the second stage; I can add code there to change trqu -> trq for the
second stage. I will need to test this, though.

That device is detected by "discover" as an "rtl8139". That's
probably right for a 2.2 kernel, but for 2.4.18, there's two choices
for the 8139. I tried to modprobe 8139cp, and it failed, but modprobe
8139too worked fine.

the pci.list in discover data makes reference to a module called
`rtl8139', which not in the kernel-image-2.4.18 package. thus if you
have an ethernet with an RealTek 8139 chip, discover will not load the
module for it.

references to `rtl8139' need to be replaced with `8139too', which is a
module that comes with the kernel-images-2.4.18 package. this driver has
the same functionality.

thanks.

Re: base-installer_0.066_powerpc.changes ACCEPTED

2004-04-03 Thread Holger Levsen
Good Morning ;)

by looking at the changelog I found that you fixed the kernel install problem
and this morning I found some new images at
http://people.debian.org/~luther/debian-installer/daily-powerpc-built/current/powerpc-small/floppy/

I tried to write the root.img on about 10 different floppies, twice, and
bootet them without any succes. The disks read fine, the mac-tux logo turns
black and the systems freezes. Is it possible that the root.img is broken or
had I just very bad luck with floppies ?

Anyhow, I realized I could use the "old" root-floppy from Jeremie and an new
boot-floppy. (I wrote the image on the same floppies I tried with the
root-image, and the floppy works.) The root-floppy gets loaded but almost
instantly hangs with:

/build/build/cdebconf-0.58/src/debconf.c:115 (main): Error reading
configuration information
/build/build/cdebconf-0.58/src/debconf-loadtemplate.c:68 (main): Error reading
configuration information

(I also tried three different boot-floppies, the same error. (As expected as
they're read ok.)

So I guess, the floppy images are broken :(

regards,
Holger

Well, if i understood this correctly, this is only a symptom of a larger
deficiency in partman. It was already a great thing to have partman be
the default for beta3, but i guess that we should fine tune this for
beta4.

The idea is that some hardware configurations needs some particular
partitions to be there (like a prep boot partition or a palo boot
partition, or the yaboot boot partition on pmac), or even some
filesystem to be used for the /boot partition (like affs on pegasos 1).

We need to get partman to be smarter, and guide the user through the
creation of those partitions trully needed for his given arch. I believe
that this can be achieved by having some per arch, subarch and
particular case proposal of partitioning and mounting in partman,
doubled with a per arch/subarch/... choice of pre-configured partition
tables, and a warning to the user in case he doesn't mount the
partitions as is needed on the hardware in question.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

Package: discover1-udeb
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i

hw-detect depends on discover-udeb, so I think that discover1-udeb
should provide it. Currently the d-i initrd build process downloads
discover-udeb, but does not put it in the initrd, and in the initrd,
hw-detects dependency is unsatisfied.

It might be better if discover 1 and 2 udebs both provided a third name,
like discover, then hw-detect could depend on that.
