Bug#244344: Needs libpci1 & libpci2, aka. new pciutils breaks installs
Package: debootstrap Version: 0.2.32 Severity: serious Installing a sid system is not possible anymore because of problems with pciutils: pciutils depends on libpci2 (>= 1:2.1.11-9.1); however: Package libpci2 is not installed. pciutils depends on libpci1; however: Package libpci1 is not installed. It turns out that the new version has a Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-4), libpci2 (>= 1:2.1.11-9.1), libpci1 However, debootstrap neither installs libpci2 nor libpci1. According to the changelog of pciutils, this depends is intentional: pciutils (1:2.1.11-10) unstable; urgency=low * Sysfs support enabled again. libpci1 -> libpci2. * Old shared lib in separate (source) package: libpci1 * Temporary dependency on libpci1 package, for transition purposes. -- Remco van de Meent <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thu, 8 Apr 2004 21:07:51 +0200 So I guess debootstrap needs to include those two packages (although I think it really sucks to install libpci1 on every new base install just for transition purposes). Bug#244332: kernel-wedge check fails when building kernels for multiple arches
Package: kernel-wedge Version: 1.9 The kernel-wedge check you implemented recently doesn't work properly even if you have a package which builds images for more than one architeture. When you build one just one architecture, it tries to check the packages of _all_ architectures and fails because some have not been built. i.e. I have a -mips packages which builds images for mipsel and mips. I tried to build the mipsel kernels, but got an error because it checked the mips kernel. kernel-wedge install-files install -D -m 644 /boot/vmlinux-2.4.25-r3k-kn02 debian/kernel-image-2.4.25-r3k-kn02-di/boot/vmlinux-2.4.25-r3k-kn02 install -D -m 644 /boot/System.map-2.4.25-r3k-kn02 debian/kernel-image-2.4.25-r3k-kn02-di/boot/System.map-2.4.25-r3k-kn02 kernel-wedge copy-modules 2.4.25 r3k-kn02 2.4.25-r3k-kn02 kernel-wedge find-dups 2.4.25-r3k-kn02 install -D -m 644 /boot/vmlinux-2.4.25-r4k-kn04 debian/kernel-image-2.4.25-r4k-kn04-di/boot/vmlinux-2.4.25-r4k-kn04 install -D -m 644 /boot/System.map-2.4.25-r4k-kn04 debian/kernel-image-2.4.25-r4k-kn04-di/boot/System.map-2.4.25-r4k-kn04 kernel-wedge copy-modules 2.4.25 r4k-kn04 2.4.25-r4k-kn04 kernel-wedge find-dups 2.4.25-r4k-kn04 install -D -m 644 /boot/vmlinux-2.4.25-r5k-cobalt debian/kernel-image-2.4.25-r5k-cobalt-di/boot/vmlinux-2.4.25-r5k-cobalt install -D -m 644 /boot/System.map-2.4.25-r5k-cobalt debian/kernel-image-2.4.25-r5k-cobalt-di/boot/System.map-2.4.25-r5k-cobalt kernel-wedge copy-modules 2.4.25 r5k-cobalt 2.4.25-r5k-cobalt kernel-wedge find-dups 2.4.25-r5k-cobalt kernel-wedge check find: debian/kernel-image-2.4.25-r4k-ip22-di: No such file or directory kernel-image-2.4.25-r4k-ip22-di will be empty make: *** [binary-arch] Error 1 kernel-image-2.4.25-r4k-ip22-di is mips, not mipsel... so obviously it doesn't exist when building on mipsel. -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#244334: doesn't support images on different arches with the same name
Package: kernel-wedge Version: 1.9 Severity: wishlist kernel-wedge lacks a feature I'd expect to see in any industrial strength kernel wedger. It does not support building an image with the same name on multiple architectures. There is a machine which can run in either mips or mipsel, and the kernel configuration is exactly the same except for the endianess. Unfortunately, kernel-wedge creates two separate control stanzas, which dpkg doesn't like. (If this is too hard to implement, I guess I can split mips and mipsel again, but it does make some sense to have them in one source package.) -- Martin Michlmayr [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". sarge-i386-netinst.iso vom 14.4.2004
Grub doesn't work with that, but the installer wouldn't actually install Lilo instead. There were no error messages from the installing lilo step. It just didn't work. So I had to execute a shell, run chroot, run liloconfig, and then /sbin/lilo. After that I could "Do without a bootloader" and "Finish installation and reboot". The default Debian mirror, ftp.us.debian.org, didn't work when downloading drivers. The error message was unhelpful, as I didn't know whether there was no network, no connection to the particular mirror, or no drivers in the mirror (it was the latter). The old boot floppies gave a better error. One annoyance I found was that the partioner wouldn't reuse the information about where partitions were mounted. So every time I ran through the installer, I had to tell it again that /dev/hda2 is /, etc. Hardware detection was, in general, quite good. It didn't want to load the network module (e1000) after the reboot, and I had to do that manually. There was a warning about e1000 when loading the drivers, so I was on the lookout for it. In general, a lot of things just happened automatically without even prompting "Next". It was somewhat disquieting, though I guess it is OK. Expert mode doesn't do that, so it is ok with me. After everything was installed, the ethernet interface was automatically configured to come up during booting, causing a long wait if it wasn't connected. Also, I checked the "Laptop" box in tasksel, but it didn't install laptop-net. In general, if it had worked, it would have been great. The main problem is that there weren't enough error messages when things go wrong. Neither the ftp.us.debian.org problem nor the Lilo problem gave good error messages. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#244300: base-config: Unquoted variable in apt-setup
Package: base-config Version: 2.18 Severity: minor Hi, The following code snippet around line 326 of /usr/sbin/apt-setup if [ -n $COUNTRY ]; then db_set apt-setup/country $COUNTRY fi produces an error like /usr/sbin/apt-setup: line 326: [: United: binary operator expected if the COUNTRY variable contains more than one word. It probably needs to be quoted to be treated like a single argument in such a case. It seems like this problem does not affect the db_set statement, i.e. the complete name of the country is put into the debconf database. I was then presented by a screen with an informational message and three options: "Retry", "Change mirror", and "Cancel". When choosing "Cancel", I was returned back to the very same screen (does not seem correct), but I was able to get out using the "Change mirror" option. [2] A more serious problem occured after reboot. Even though I was installing over a serial console, installer failed to recognize it, it seems. It activated the usual 6 virtual consoles, however failed to activate one for a serial port. As a result after the completion of configuration I received a bunch of messages from init about getty respawning too quickly and was left without a working console to login. Booting manually with init=/bin/sh and editing inittab to start an mgetty on a serial console fixed the problem. One more minor quirk which I've noticed is an error message from apt-setup (package base-config). The problem is the code snippet from it around line 326: if [ -n $COUNTRY ]; then db_set apt-setup/country $COUNTRY fi For multi-word country names (like US, for example) this will produce an error: /usr/sbin/apt-setup: line 326: [: United: binary operator expected The correct way is to surround references to $COUNTRY by quotes. I'll file a bug about it for base-config. Bug#244205: A further update
An update on my installation story: The system is running. But I encountered 2 other issues. 1) Just after pre-configuring all the packages and before the installation started, one of the programs complained that it could not find /usr/lib/python2.3/compileall.py. Lucky enough I still had a copy lying around that I could use. 2) The "zo file generation" took about 2x14 minutes on my box, significantly longer than the 10 minute "limit". About Pegasos and Amiga, well, yes, the Pegasos runs morphos which is an amigaos cleanroom reimplementation, it has no right to the amiga trademark though, but i wont go into those infigthings stories here. We also tried booting the pmac-elf kernel with builtin initrd on a prismo from the netbooting OF directly, but there was some error because the compressed kernel + initrd was bigger than 4Mo. That said, this 2.6.5 kernel use a initrd for module booting. Did you make progress on 2.6 d-i on ppc ? Ok, cool, can you please test the floppy image i built at : http://people.debian.org/~luther/boot.img and tell me if it works ? I tested it here on a beige G3 pmac, but it rejected the floppy, and since you had bad experience with old dusty floppy drives, and bad floppies, you would be the perfect person to try it on. This is a 2.6.5 kernel though, so the root floppy will probably complain about not finding anything, but i want to know if my miboot building was ok or not. glibc fixes for d-i in -12
Hi folks The glibc people integrated a patch with the following changelog: - Add libnss-dns-udeb package. - Rename udebs to match the real packages. (closes: #183139) - Fix provides of udebs. (closes: #183143) libnss-dns-udeb includes libnss_dns and is a fix for our permanent-workaround to include that lib in EXTRALIBS. libresolv is pulled in by mklibs then. On the other side is libc-udeb renamed to libc6(.1)-udeb, which was scheduled for after sarge release but makes the provides fix much easier. It also provides libc-udeb so the resolver finds it. They intend to release this weekend. Needed to be replaced with an old-fashioned CRT. This problem was gone after the reboot. I heard this was previously also noticed using a RedHat rescue CD, problem seems to only show up when booting from CD, and not when booting from HD. I've no clue about causes... - General: went VERY smoothly, everything I could dream of was auto-detected, I was very delighted to notice I didn't have to spend days on the X config for example. Great work people! - ssh-client was not on the netinst, while ssh is sometimes required to fix networking. - X: it defaulted to not autodetect my mouse... why not? - installing desktop task, gets you both kde and gnome, whith kde as default (I choose GDM, and wasn't asked for kde/gnome. For desktop PC's, I can imagine people want either KDE or Gnome, but not necessarily both... - Idem for editors, I want the Debian OS, not the emacs OS... (okay, I admit, this is nitpicking) - apache2 was default, but apache2+php4 module = not working - installing both php4 and php4-cgi, makes apache2 use the cgi version of php4. - apt-get --purge remove apache2 gave warnings about files in /etc (I didn't touch the config), apache2 remained running after apache2 was gone. Installing apache (1.3) didn't make it start running) - The php4 readme.debian had outdated info (and very unorganized) about how to enable the php4 module in apache (you need to run modules-update apache enable mod_php4), which should be done by postinst imho anyway (didn't happen, don't know whether it's intentional). - Installing php4-cgi installed in apache2 automatically... don't know whether that's how it's supposed to work (php4 should be preferred if both are available imho) - Installing mysql popped up a huge note about upgrading issues... while it was a clean install (debconf abuse) --Jeroen -- Jeroen van Wolffelaar [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://jeroen.A-Eskwadraat.nl -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Debian bug report and tags
Hi. I'm the basque translation coordinator and i have a question: I hve open some bugs with reportbug to update the translations, but I not put tags in the report (sorry, I'm new in these features). the busgs are : #243545, #243587 and #243922. Is this very important ? Can I fix ? How ? thanks -- ^pi^ <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is great, other people have had the same problem! You were trying to boot a pmac? Yes, this is for booting a pmac (i.e. Xserve rev. 2). The patch is mentioned on: http://www.soziologie.ch/users/steinlin/d-i/#netboot http://staff.harrisonburg.k12.va.us/~rlineweaver/macnb/ It turns out that this patch is not needed for the dhcp3-server package from testing. However, you do need to get the "Apple voodoo" in there in some way. I suppose your way, i.e. using vendor-encapsulated-options, will do the trick (I'll try that one on monday), but I achieved the same effect with the following configuration bits: option space mac; option mac.version code 230 = string; option mac.user-name code 232 = text; option mac.password code 233 = text; option mac.nb-img code 234 = string; option mac.apps-img code 235 = string; option mac.machine-name code 237 = text; option mac.client-nb-img code 238 = string; and site-option-space "mac"; option mac.version 00:00:00:00; option mac.user-name "netboot"; option mac.password "abcdefg"; option mac.nb-img d4:f0:10:7:2:24:2:6E:62:0:0:0:0:2:6:73:68:0:68:64:31; option mac.apps-img d4:f0:10:7:2:24:2:6E:62:0:0:0:0:2:6:73:68:0:68:64:30; option mac.machine-name "NB-BML-FictLib-1533-IP19.153"; option mac.client-nb-img d4:f0:10:7:2:24:2:6E:62:0:0:0:0:2:6:43:6C:0:31:35:33; if exists dhcp-parameter-request-list { option dhcp-parameter-request-list = concat(option dhcp-parameter-request-list, e6, e8, e9, ea, eb, ed, ee); } I tried it with just mac.version, but that did not work. I do assume that we can get away with less options than above, but did not really try to find a 'minimal' solution. The information about the option parameters I retrieved from the patch. The values I just copied from: http://frank.gwc.org.uk/~ali/nb/ > Do you need the same options when PXE booting x86 as booting the Mac, does the manual say anything about this? I've never PXE booted so I don't know. For PXE i needed a 'magic' value and the "if exist...concat" part (for DHCPd v3). However, PXE is using different parameters. I just used the same idea and transposed it onto the information I could find about the requirements for netbooting Apple machines. >Do you know the name of them, I'm refering to these: >>option vendor-encapsulated-options 01:01:02:08:04:01:00:00:01:82: >>04: #length >>69:6d:61:63:34 No clue there, but I will try to boot with just: option vendor-encapsulated-options 01:01:02:08:04:01:00:00:01:82:00; (that is, a 0-length hostname). >>Then it hit me that we do not have to wait for yaboot 2 to be >>released, > Thanks that patch will help alot, I will try it pronto. Hopefully it will work out well, is this the same thing that Sven did? Not sure if Sven actually did this, but Colin's response was along the same line of thinking. He mentions that this was suggested to upstream, but that upstream does not want to apply this patch. To me it looks like upstream wants to concentrate on an improved version of yaboot all-around and that this limitation (which is valid just for TFTP booting) will be taken care of too. I don't care much, since I just wanted to get on with trying d-i, without having to burn CD's all the time, so I am happy with running my own patched yaboot for first stage netbooting. >>device=enet: > What is this? ? Is it the tftp server? This is a secondary TFTP server. The yaboot executable is actually retrieved from the primary (i386) server, which runs the (corporate) DHCP server and provides TFPT for network installation purposes (FAI). The kernel image is retrieved from a different server (oldworld powermac) which I use for automatic nightly builds of d-i. This way I automatically get the most recent kernel/initrd, w/o having the copy the recent stuff to a different machine ;) >>I also tried starting installation from a USB key, and although >>it seems (after device investigations through OpenFirmware) that >>it does start yaboot, > Have you tried booting from firewire, I think I will try that later on as well? I really thing the holy grail is to get the kernel executable directly by OF i.e. including yaboot in some way, it make no sense that I can't load the kernel from OF. It is not OF that prevents you from loading the kernel, it is the limited bufferspace yaboot v1 has available for the kernelimage when downloading it from the TFPT server. Yaboot is perfectly capable of loading bigger kernel images, as long as they are not served thru TFTP. The suggested modification takes care of that restriction, or actually puts the boundary a bit higher. > /Ha en trevlig helg I like måte, Pepijn. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". The source for the manual is part of the source for d-i in SVN. You can find it under debian-installer/installer/doc/manual/. The English version is the 'master' for other languages. Rick Thomas has mentioned he'd also like to work on the manual for Macs; Miroslav Kure is coordinating work on the manual. You can find their email addresses in the archives for this list. If you decide to update the manual directly, please send a mail to this list with a summary of your changes. You can also send a patch to this list. Not sure what your > exact problem is, as i don't use netbooting on pmac hardware. Well, see you sent lots of mails on that bug report. So I guess that this should be fixed soon. I'm only sad Ethan doesn't like to have stuff included in yaboot 1, it really need new features. > It works fine on my chrp based pegasos box though. Hmm? The code being patched says you can't do it because the buffer is to small, what is it you can do? btw pegasos that's the Amiga right? Well my bugreport really wasn't about this, it was about getting netbooting to work, it was anoying that the manual said it was more or less like booting an ordinary machine but it's not. I'm guessing it's alot morecommon to try to boot Macs than other CHRP platforms, so it would be nice to have in the manual So my question is how can I do this? Where is the source for the manual. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A simple mount -a after a continue did work fine. I am not sure how to solve that in a more final way yet. - the rest of the installation complained that the installation of some packages failed. In effect, nothing was installed. After some tries I could just make out that /var/cache was not big enough to receive the selected packages for installation. I managed to solve that by relocating /var/cache to /data/var/cache, but I think this should be noted earlier, or solved more gracefully by looking for another place to put these temporary files if /var is on a too-small root. Fabulous tool! I am sure this installation set will make debian/gnu a winner! Regards, Rob Hooft -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
