Bug#257964: countrychooser: Translation breaks the countries names ordering
severity 257964 wishlist merge 251418 257964 thanks > After filling this, I discovered #251418, which seems very related. Feel > free to close this bug report if you feel it duplicated. Both are indeed the same. Sorting translated choices is *very* tricky. It requires the use of Indices fields in the templates file (after it has been generated by po-debconf) choose-mirror has an example : there, country names are really sroted even when translated. This has been done with a Denis Barbier script named sort-countries. Using more or less the same system for countrychooser is theoretically possible but, for the short list even more tricky as this short list itself has a special generation system (see "mkshort"). So, considering we are now officially in a feature freeze time period (see the "yet-to-be-written" 20040706 d-i metting summary), this is quite unlikely to be implemented in a near future.

Bug#257863: tasksel in post-reboot d-i automatically pulls in language tasks -> non-X installation impossible.

I'm not sure if some users might be annoyed to see only one language on the list though. I'm considering some of the alternatives listed in bug #202907. The one that adds language-dekstop tasks is easily enough done with the new tasksel. One conclusion I reached today is that language "tasks" are not really tasks in the tasksel sense, and should really be orthagonal to task selection. Until this is fixed there will continue to be various problems no matter what we do. Unfortunatly a real fix is probably a post-sarge item now. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

ddetect override disparity
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the override file for the following file(s): hw-detect-full_0.105_all.udeb: package says priority is standard, override says optional. Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why. [NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in due course, but until then the installer will send these automated mails; sorry.] -- Debian distribution maintenance software (This message was generated automatically; if you believe that there is a problem with it please contact the archive administrators by mailing [EMAIL PROTECTED]) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". When I tried to install to VMware(4.5.2 build8848) with 'linux26', framebuffer won't be loaded. I know this is because rootskel's problem, but I find another (more critical) problem. When I run "modprobe vesafb", this command doesn't return any error code, and looks be registered correctly (from lsmod information). But, syslog says "vesafb: probe of vesafb0 failed with error -6", and /proc/fb is still empty. fbcon won't install. "modprobe vga16fb" works correctly. And, if I provide vesa boot option, such as "vga=785", vesafb works. All of problem looks kernel(or modprobe) loads vesafb in spite of it reports an error. This problem is only happened with 2.6.7. 2.4.26 works correctly. And I remember 2.6.5 works. I'll try to clarify who's wrong. Bug#255388: please provide info about kernel modules
tags 255388 +moreinfo Thanks Hi I try to fix the problem you reported in bug #255388. Could you please provide this additional info: - Did you install with kernel 2.4 (boot option: linux) or 2.6 (boot option: linux26)? - Which modules do you need to load with your existing Linux installation to access the cdrom? What kernel version is this? - Are you able to install when manually modprobing these modules on the second screen before the cd-detection in debian-installer? - Could you eventually retest with a newer image[1] just to see if the problem has been fixed in the meantime. After "modprobe usb-uhci" in the 2nd console, all went well, and the HD detection found the disk, which partman "saw" as well. I prefered 'kbd-mode' because it slightly differs from the kbd_mode of console-tools (mainly a trimmed down version enhanced with d-i loggers) and it fits to the kbd-chooser name space :-) Should we move the console mode switch code in S55kbd-chooser to the files you indicated above? > About unicode_start, didn't you file a bugreport weeks ago to request that > calls to kbd_mode and dumpkeys are swapped in this script? I cannot > find it. Yes, I did it for #247944. But that problem was somewhat different as explained in the bug report. Regarding the ioctl call, what is strange is that the keymaps with unicode symbols (i.e. trqu.kmap) work, if we switch to unicode mode in loadkeys_wrapper; but the "keyboard freeze" problem still happens! To summarize things, it needs exactly two modification to solve (1) the "keyboard freeze" and (2) "keep working with unicode keymaps": (1) switch to unicode mode by invoking 'kbd-mode -u' early and (2) prevent multiple getfd() calls. -- roktas signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#250563: Same problem
Hello, we've got an installation repport in french stating the same kind of problem on debian-l10n-french. It looks like that the IDE kernel modules were missing since going back, selecting them and retrying did the trick. Before that, it did state something like "here is the liste of partitions" (rough reverse translation), with nothing below. So, I think that: - partman should warn when no partition were found (not even free space) - the error message in that case should speak about the possibility that the problem comes from missing kernel modules (IDE and sg comes to mind) Thanks for your time, Mt. -- Il y a 10 catégories de personnes : celles qui comprennent le binaire, et les autres. --- Blague d'informaticiens -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Amongst other things, it states that the fact that there is no "ok" button while configuring the network manually makes it difficult for users. They have to guess that they need to press enter. Bug#257970: debian-installer: vesafb driver in 2.6.7 problem (or VMware?)
Package: debian-installer Severity: important Version: sid_d-i 20040705 I don't what this problem is from, but report for recording. Bug#257964: countrychooser: Translation breaks the countries names ordering
Package: countrychooser Version: Translation breaks the countries names ordering Severity: normal Tags: l10n Hello, when using countrychooser in, say, French, the ordering of the countries seems randomized. I'm not sure how to fix that. Either you add a new field to cdebconf for automatically sorted choices, or you construct the template on the fly. Both of them seems rather hard to me, but that's a good feature. Anyway having such a program might be useful, packages/rootskel/src/lib/debian-installer.d/S[49]0utf8-linux will then look very similar to unicode_st{art,op}. But kbd-mode should be renamed to kbd_mode. About unicode_start, didn't you file a bugreport weeks ago to request that calls to kbd_mode and dumpkeys are swapped in this script? I cannot find it. Re: Root-on-raid install ?
Tim Day wrote: I just tried to use a software raid device as '/', but soon after selecting the partitioner's "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk" a dialog says: "Debian does not currently support using software raid for the root filesystem or /boot partition. A system installed in this way will not boot". Does that simply mean that the debian installer doesn't support setting it up, or is it telling me something more fundamental (ie lots of other debian stuff won't support it either) ? Any plans for this to change ? Would I fare any better throwing LVM or EVMS into the mix too ? (I'm using the 20040704 sarge netinst, BTW). Debian's mkinitrd supports root on RAID1, LVM, or LVM-on-RAID1. The debian installer, however, doesn't know how to install with root & boot on anything but a 'plain' partition. There are several ways around this (search the archives for a message from me describing how to install to root-on-LVM-on-RAID for details on one such method). I've recently decided to move root off the LVM, and am now running root and boot as seperate RAID1 devices, with everything else (usr, var, tmp, home, and swap) on LVM+RAID5. You can 'trick' the debian installer to install directly onto a RAID, or (what I did), just do a plain install (root and boot on plain partitions), then migrate to a RAID1 mirror after the system is installed. You'll probably also want to dig up my patches to add RAID1 support to grub-install and update-grub (posted to debian-boot a week or two ago) if you're running grub (and don't want to manually update menu.lst whenever you add/remove kernels). -- Charles Steinkuehler [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Martin Michlmayr schrieb: * Olaf Jäger <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> [2004-02-10 19:22]: 1st: The Thinkpad has no Network card, the hardware-detection fails? it?s correct. The installer asks for the correct module for the nic and I selected ?none of the above?. The installer didn´t step to the next option, so I selected manually the next step but the installer asks permanently for the right module for the nic. It can?t remember that I have selected ?none of the above?. Can you please get a current image from http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/ and see if this works? I think this has been fixed. 2nd: The boot-loader-installation runs without an errormessage, but the /boot directory is empty and /vmlinuz doesn?t exist. The point ?Finish the installation and reboot? fails, the installer asks me again for the nic-module. When I select ?reboot system?, the boot process fails, probably because there is no /vmlinuz. This should definitely work now; can you confirm? hi, now my thinkpad has a nic, so i didn't tested for the reported bug, and with the new image you told about, all is working now. thank you so much. olaf
Bug#257910: Installation Report ia64 netinst beta4 : no fat16 /boot partition created
Package: installation-reports Debian-installer-version:sarge-ia64-netinst.iso beta4 Machine : HP i2000 (bios 117c) but the problem is probably relevant to all ia64 systems. The installation of the kernel and elilo on a an ia64 system requires a FAT16 partition, (also known as an EFI partition to sound more modern) otherwise the installation fails during "installation of the base system". However the (previous) partitionning step gives no hint to that respect. What's worse, the suggested automatic-for-dummies options (create one big partition, or create two for / and /home) do not create this FAT16 /boot partition, leading to failure of the kernel installation. Besides, I did not see any hint in the error messages that the failure is due to a missing FAT16 partition. Best regards, and sorry if there is something wrong in this bug report, it is my first one. What you're asking, I think, is whether the hardware ID implies a >> > layout. (It's not really autodetection; it's a lookup.) I don't know.> Its hard to do keyboard detection based on hardware ID because of the cheap way keyboard manufacturers build keyboards: they do not want to build key layout into the keyboard electronics, but rather just build 'local' keyboards by sticking the keycaps on at the last minute. E.g. it is easy for a manufacturer to assign different USB IDs to different models, so that keymap type could be autodetected in software. But if they eg. make boards for 1000 French azerty keyboards, with a French ID in the 'firmware', they can't just make these into German 'qwertz' keyboards (if they get a demand for German keyboards), by putting different keycaps on them before packaging, which is what they like to do right now. This is irritating as it means kbd-chooser, etc. can't completely autoconfigure the keyboard. For non-AT keyboards, e.g. Sparc, Apple, etc. the prospects are better; see code in kbd-chooser source for reading keyboard type from these from the input layer in 2.6 kernels. (Hint, hint: please move to 2.6 kernels where possible...) >I've thought about this extensively at this year's DebConf, however I've >been unable to implement a real solution. Arg Joey's initial idea of automatically pulling the language task was great imho, but we have to find a solution for avoiding this, of course. IMHO, there are two possible solutions: 1)split each language task in a "x" and "non-x" task and only pull in the non-x task while proposing the "x" task as an optional task 2)stop pulling in these languages tasks automatically and offer an optional language task (generic, such as "Localisation in your language") 1) is more complicated to be implemented (needs splitting all l10n tasks) 2) may be easier I add this to topics for this evening meeting, but with low priority. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#257828: [INTL:es] update to base-config.8
Package: base-config Version: 2.34 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch l10n Please, update this translation. The patch also contains a minor change to the initial comments in apt-setup.8, it helps me to keep track of the manpage, so, please, update that also. Processing commands for [EMAIL PROTECTED]: > retitle 239270 error: Should never end up here using 'ANSI_X3.4-1968' Bug#239270: During the install I selected US, The Netherlands, US American as keyboard layout and then continued the install. At the end when you can opped to run stuff like tasksel I did one install with and one without running tasksel. Then you get the "Thank you for " screen and then the prompt popsup, yet above the prompt there was the following message: "error: Should never end up here using 'ANSI_X3.4-1968'". The guy's at #debian-boot asked me to post this bug report and told me that the bug must come from /usr/sbin/termcap. I don't know this, but maybe it a good pointer. They also asked me to add the /var/log/installer.log and /etc/locale.gen file. I don't know how to add those, but if needed I will mail them on request (By e-mail). Changed Bug title. (By the way, that Bug is currently marked as done.) > End of message, stopping processing here. Please contact me if you need assistance. I'd managed to get the system installed with a bit of Woody hackery and the system is now in production use, so couldn't test the updated installer. More infos for D-I testers
Hi, I thought that it could be useful both for developers and for testers if the d-I images were associated to a file explainig which features testers should focus on: occasional testers would probably send installation reports as usual without paying too much attention to this file, but more experienced testers or people willing to help could focus on particular aspects of the release. Don't know if it could make sense but since I was reading this: "Your name sounds french: did you install in French or English? We don't have that much install reports for Sparc in languages other than English." As an answer to an installation report I thought it could be really useful... If the file existed the user cuold point out the details without being asked to do so. Ciao Davide
