Wel okl, I am not a Sun expert but on hppa box, it's enough to unplug mouse/kbd
to force the pdc (the pc-bios equivalent) to switch it's console to the
serial port 1. Is it the same for a sunblade or do I have to change something
in the openboot config?

Thanks again,

Debian Installer IRC meeting on Saturday 17 July at 20:00 UTC

2004-07-14 Thread Anibal Monsalve Salazar
Debian Installer IRC meeting on Saturday 17 July at 20:00 UTC
   -

An open meeting of the Debian Installer "team" ("team" is very vague
here, everyone can attend of course) will happen on IRC.

Servers: freenode.net (just point your client to irc.debian.org)
Channel: #debian-boot
Time : Saturday 17 July at 20:00 UTC

Points to be discussed:

1. Preparation of the beta release and any issues that might be
   blocking a release
2. Architecture status rollcall
3. Whatever else that needs to be discussed

The detailed list of possible topics can be found at:

http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?DebianInstallerMeetings

Please edit it according to your wishes by keeping the main meeting
goals (prepare a *release*, not discussing future plans) in mind.

Preparing the meeting
-

People who plan to attend this meeting, please prepare yourselves
regarding the above points. Open the key bug logs on bugs.debian.org,
write down a list of things you want to see discussed regarding the
above (or not). Read previous meeting minutes.

Please try to be easy to identify on IRC. Not everyone is able to
remember who are "tbm", "bubulle" and all these nice nicknames.

This is an opened meeting on a public channel. During the meeting,
please try to be concise and precise. There is a mention of a
moderatorwho will only try to keep the meeting on tracks and
summarize it afterwards.

The meeting log will be recorded and published in debian-boot.

I tried the command line you gave me on IRC, but I'm still getting a

'apt-get install foo bar' only succeeds if foo and bar are both

At the moment, read-edid only exists on i386.

The combination of these two facts means that
base-config/lib/menu/pkgsel never installs mdetect on non-i386
architectures. It should install the two separately so that it can cope
with either one being missing.

Here's an untested (sorry) patch:

By the way, why the redirection of useful information to /dev/null? It
would have been easier to find this problem if the output had been
visible. I guess the error messages about read-edid not being available
might confuse some people or something.

Thanks,

There's no libfribidi0 on the netinst CD, which is probably the problem.
When adding apt-installs, be sure to update tools/generate_di+k_list in
debian-cd cvs. Done in this case, may take manty a while to merge it
into his checkout since there have been lots of other debian-cd changes
today.

Hmmm

Maybe not so much as expected after all.

It died installing the base system. This is repeatable (I tried it
twice, it died identically)

Hardware -- Macintosh Power PC Beige G3 minitower and Mac PowerPC 6500

Software -- businesscard installation CDs for "beta4" and "20040530"
  downloaded from
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/powerpc/{beta4|20040530}/

I boot using BootX (since the boot floppy approach won't work on
OldWorld machines now that miBoot is in the doghouse for being
politically incorrect)

I use BootX with kernel arguments "video=atyfb:vmode:3,cmode:16" and
leaving the two check-boxes blank having to do with video modes.
This setup has worked for me in the past.

When I tell it to boot, I get the picture of Tux in the upper left part
of the screen, and the rest of the screen is scrolling text from the
kernel while it sets up the hardware.

Then the suddenly (about the time I'd expect to see the first
questions from d-i) the screen goes black.

Option-f{234} keys will switch to the usual virtual tty screens, which
show white text on a black background, pretty much as expected. On the
"f4" screen, the last couple of lines are:

main-menu[236]: DEBUG: configure cdebconf-udeb, status: 2
frontend: Setting debconf/language to en

I get this behavior with both the Beta4 and the 20040530 "businesscard"
install CDs.

I've also tried various other video settings (with and without the BootX
video-mode checkboxes) to no avail.

I've tried setting DEBCONF_PRIORITY=medium, and that didn't help either.

Any suggestions?

Rick

Comments/Problems:

After the reboot, it still wanted to install the "powerpc-small"
kernel. It complained that I didn't have an initrd configured
(mainly because this is an oldworld machine, and I use BootX as a
boot loader, so there was no boot loader configured.

I didn't want the "small" kernel anyway, mainly because of the
"initrd" issue,
so I told it to "stop now".

As a result, it complained about one or more steps aborting, and
asked me if I wanted to try again. I said go ahead, and this time
it gave me a bunch of options for which kernel I wanted to install.
Presumably this is because it dropped priority to medium as a result
of the error. In any case, I chose
kernel-image-2.4.25-powerpc-pmac, which doesn't need an initrd for
  my hardware config.

This time it wasn't concerned about an initrd, but it was upset that
I didn't install a boot loader, telling me that I should boot by
hand from /dev/hdc10, which I knew already.

  Sigh!

1) It automatically ejected the boot floppy when asking for the root
floppy. Thanks for that, whoever put that patch in. However, when
calling for the drivers floppy, it did not eject the root floppy. I
had to use the paper-clip trick to eject it so I could insert the
net-drivers floppy. It really should eject the root floppy
automatically when it's done using it.

2) Select a keyboard layout failed. I have a Mac ADB keyboard, but I
had to manually lie

I'm no expert on d-i. I just assumed that you would have more luck using
sid_d-i, since there have been made some recent progress to these
images that allowed me and other to get past a kernel panic that looks
similar to yours
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=254808 and other
similar reports).

I think the best think you can do is to provide a complete dump of the
entire boot process (e.g. using a serial console, if you have a serial
cable for this purpose). This should reveal every little detail that
may help the d-i developers on this mailinglist (maybe debian-sparc
will be interested as well).

This indicates a hardware problem. The first memory slot needs a good
simm properly seated, and it should be the largest installed in the
system. (On the sparc 20, I beleive this is the slot closest to the
disk drives.)

Have you verified that libfribidi0 is installed at this point? Perhaps
there is a bug in the apt-install usage in languagechooser?

On my installed system, I get the expected results if I have libfribidi0
and slang1a-utf8 installed from testing and I run "LANG=he_IL.UTF-8
dpkg-reconfigure geneweb".

Investigation shows that the four Arabic ligature characters were missing
from needed-characters/ar, and that one of these characters was indeed
used in the translation of the iso-scan main menu item. Still waiting for
the results of testing to see whether adding these characters to the
reduced font fixes the problem.

debian-installer on sparc32

2004-07-14 Thread Noèl Köthe
Hello,

I just tested debian-installer in my small sparc machine.

I tried

but couldn't get it booted:

Package: tasksel, general
Version: 1.25
Severity: normal

If you pick the Spanish language task in tasksel, you will get mozilla
and openoffice installed, which is often not the desired effect. This is
because the spanish task, like many tasks, pulls in -ll packages like
openoffice.org-l10n-es and mozilla-locale-es-es. These tend to be split
out of huge software packages, and depend on them. So a user installing
a web server in Spanish gets a ton of crap pulled in when they select
the Spanish task.

Solutions include:

- Make the -ll packages only recommend the main packages, as the kde
  ones do.
- Put the -ll packages in the tasks that install OOo and mozilla.
But this is quite hard to maintain in tasksel.
- Stop this translation splitting nonsense.

When doing a sid install with the daily builds of the netboot
debian-installer on powerpc, in the french language, i noticed that the
new tasksel automatically pulls in the language task, well, at least the
french one, which means it pulls in openoffice, kde and another bunch of
stuff, which not only makes it impossible to do a small non-X
installation, but also means my 512Mo swap partition i use for d-i
testing is no more big enough for finalizing the installation.

... ah, but of course if there's only one string of interest, the binary
search would be very short. ;)

Trivially, figure out which menu items appear in the iso-scan main menu
that don't appear in the main menu for other images; then remove the
Arabic translations for those menu items, rebuild, and test to confirm
whether the crash still occurs.

If it doesn't crash, binary searching will pinpoint the problematic
string.

It all went smooth, no problems encountered.
Only thing was that I didn't find anywhere I could tell it NOT to install pcmcia-stuff?
Since my machine has no use for PCMCIA at all, I think it's quite useless that it
installs PCMCIA ;)

Bug#250027: no rarp for i386

2004-07-14 Thread Joey Hess
Your grep for rarp support in the config shows it's unset for all the
i386 kernels used for d-i, and I doubt this will change unless the
kernel people are asked to change it.

Comments/Problems:

My machine has a HP CD-Writer 9300i as /dev/hdd. A linux boot doesn't
work unless I append "hdd=3Dnoprobe hdd=3Dcdrom".
Doing this had no effect with the sarge installer.

I tried (in expert mode) adding "hdd=3Dnone" to all ide-detect, and
ide-cd, but they don't take this argument happily.

I think we need a way to get those arguments (from the boot line) passed
on to the relevent modules...

I am at a loss, and installing from woody.

The Hebrew option on debian-installer shows characters written
left-to-right - They should appear right-to-left.

I use sarge-i386 cd as the rescue cd.
I find that we can not partition disk just using 'fdisk /dev/hda'.
We should use 'fdisk /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disk' instead.
It is a little too lengthy.

After booting into linux, right after starting the installer the screen
goes to black. If I switch to other console it works, I can see the
process running and kill the installer, it will start automatically again
in that console, but with serious graphical glitches (not highlighting the
current choice, not responding to keyboard, and things like that).
My machine is a PowerMac 7200/120, booting with BootX, using kernel
2.4.22-powerpc-small (the one that comes in the netinstall cd doesn't
work), the ramdisk (root.bin) is the one that comes in the cd. Checking
"no video driver" in BootX does not help.

Hello,

The most recent news at http://www.nl.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
is about Beta4, it is from april.

It would be nice if it was updated with RC1
(or even RC2 :-)

Cheers

Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

I have a USB/Firewire combo card in my alpha. Under 2.4.26 I can get a
network interface by simply inserting eth1394 and ohci1394 (and then,
as usual, bringing it up with ifconfig). This interface has been
sucessfully used to transfere >1 GB from my PPC based ibook. So
Ethernet over Firewire seems to work at least on alpha and ppc (and,
according to reports on the net, also on x86). Hence it would be
great, if debian-installer offered to probe for firewire as well, so
installs over firewire would be possible. Given that three archs
support it and the extra effort is quite limited, even if only few people
might use it, it would enhance the *coolness* quite a lot (especially=20
given all the serious discussions about patents, freenes, etc.). Btw.
the driver author has a @debian-address as well :-))

This is what lspci says about my Firewire:

Now I've also tried

Only took three floppies this time ;-) One medium was faulty the other two

So this is the new bug report.

The 2004-04-04 installation is still ongoing, with 2004-04-03 I still had the
bug #241228 ("You are attempting to install an initrd kernel image (version
2.4.25-powerpc-small. This will not work unless you have configured your boot
loader to use initrd...) which I thought was fixed with
base-installer_0.066_powerpc.changes ? I'll add info to bug#241228 if
2004-04-04 also shows this bug.

OK, I put into libc-udeb.install:

Bug#258500: is this a bug then?

2004-07-14 Thread Joey Hess
It seems that the core of this bug is if anything, a linux kernel bug
and should be reassigned to there. OTOH, it may not be a bug at all.
I don't understand Josh's suggestion to use sata_sil instead of siimage.
Are we loading the wrong module there?

I'd like to get this bug reassigned to the appropriate package(s),
whatever they may be.

Bug#250843: followup

2004-07-14 Thread Joey Hess
Did you ever get anywhere on this tail problem? Can you still reproduce
it?

One possibility is something is creating a new /var/log/messages.
busybox tail will not follow to new files. I saw this once when a broken
anna re-installed the rootskel udeb, which includes an empty
/var/log/messages, but that was code that is not in a released version
of anna. But perhaps something similar is going on.

I guess that the first hard disk had a partition table with type "sun"
(it doesn't support primary and logical partitions) and the second had a
"msdos" partition table.

On a partition tables without primary and logical partitions partman
doesn't show primary/logical column in order to save space on the row
for other things (for example for partition names). This is not a big
problem for hard disks as it is not usual to use on one system different
types of partition tables. It is a problem for the LVM and RAID
"partitions" but the support of LVM and RAID in partman needs
reimplementation anyway.

The installer fails to detect any ethernet card and asks me to choose one
of many modules. The default option is "none of the above". Since I don't
want network I select "none of the above".

Next it asks me if I want to load a module from a floppy, to which I say "no".

Then I get a "No ethernet card was found on the system" error with only a
"continue" button, which leads me right back restarting the circle.

There is no way to escape and work without a network card.

Bug#244619: There is a need for a method to prepare partitions manually. It is rather
presumptious for d-i to think that Debian will only be installed on disk and d-i knows
how to partition disks for every system. Probably we need a fake package providing
partitions-mounted, fstab-created, etc. This would allow to use the installer also on
s390

Could you explain what you mean by "it does not detect the partition
types of the two linux partitions"?

The normal behaviour is that the partitioner sees the partitions and the
existing file system in them but doesn't set a mount point for them and
the usage method is "don't use". The user has to change "don't use" to
"format" or "use existing data" and to specify mount points manually as
the installer can not remember the mount points from your previous
install.

In that case shouldn't we add a statement to that effect on the web page?

If you just need an installation that works, we recommend you use beta4 of the
installer, after checking its errata.

The above obviously is no longer true and the errata don't list current
problems.

Maybe adding the following para would help.
Note: Some of the Beta 4 boot images are currently broken because of kernel
changes. We advise to use only the Beta 110 MB CD image and to use the daily
builds (see below) for other installation methods.

Bug#259420: partconf-mkfstab: S/390 creates /dev/dasdX fstab, but uses devfs-named devices

2004-07-14 Thread Adam Thornton
Package: partconf-mkfstab
Version: 0.31
Severity: important

When installing S/390 with debian-installer, I have swap on Partion 1 of
device 0151. The fstab is written to use /dev/dasdb1, but when I IPL, I
get a devfs-style device, /dev/dasd/0151/part1, and there is no
/dev/dasdb1 device node. Either S/390 should not use devfs, or the
fstab should be written to use devfs names.

For some reason, /dev/dasda1, for the root partition, works fine even
though there's no /dev/dasda or /dev/dasda1 node; I think this is
because device 150, which is the first DASD listed in my parameter line,
is the device I IPL from, and so when it's detected there's no way to
tell whether it's going to be /dev/dasd/0150/disc or /dev/dasda.

I removed the old kernel udebs from sarge when I was under the mistaken
impression that we were going to have a release within a week of
DebConf4. These changes have to be made a little while before release.
Of course the direct links to the beta4 floppy images were removed
from the web site when I realised this had broken them, and when the
release didn't happen. You'll notice that a great many beta4 images are
broken, also including all the businesscards, for other reasons.

Please submit an installation report using [1] and attach the files syslog,
messages and partman from /var/log.
That will give us the information we need to help you.

If you are able to retry the installation please try to reproduce this
error and then send us the file /var/log/partman.

I think that your old BIOS is not a problem as Linux doesn't use BIOS in
order to access the hard disks.

And just launch it but still failled at the same place with same message
(Kernel
panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs.)

umm as said, i am not familiar with d-i (that is a long time that I installed
my woody pc and pre-woody hppa boxes, so I don't remember all details :(
), but I don't understand this message: just after "ENTER" to start the
install a ramdisk is well found and loaded, then during the load of the
kernel,
this one tries again to load (i suppose another) ramdisk which this time
it doesn't find?

The questions are:
a) does it need this second ramdisk?
b) if yes where is it supposed to look for on the cd, in the first ramdisk?

Thanks again for your quick answer,
Joel

Install to SATA with ICH5

2004-07-14 Thread Timo Veith
Hi list,

I know that there are workarounds for this problem but from what I have
read from http://wiki.debian.net/?DebianInstallerFAQ, question 8, it
should work with the newest installier image.

I tried to install on a Supermicro Barebone Superserver 5013CTB, Intel
Chipset 875P with the daily sarge-i386-netinst.iso image from 2004-07-12.
The installer doesn't find the disks nor the controller. I also tried to
change the bios setting from auto to compatibilty mode. No go.

Knoppix 3.4 finds the ICH5 SATA Controller, even with auto mode. So I
thought this might be of interest.

Kind regards,

Timo

If you choose a logical volume, you will probably see something like

Usage method: unused

Can you confirm that if you change "unused" to "format", you will be
allowed to specify mount point and file system type.

Bug#259407: network-console: zlib1g-udeb missing from (i386) CD images

2004-07-14 Thread Frans Pop
Package: network-console
Version: 0.0.1
Severity: important

Today I tried using network-console after an installation from the i386
netinst CD. sshd complained of missing libz.so.1.

From /var/log/syslog:
anna[4115]: DEBUG: resolver (zlib1g): package doesn't exist (ignored)
main-menu[500]: DEBUG: resolver (zlib1g): package doesn't exist (ignored)

$ find /cdrom -name zlib1g*
/cdrom/pool/main/z/zlib/zlib1g_1.2.1.1-3_i386.deb
So the .deb is there, but the .udeb is missing.
The udeb will be needed for the ssh-client component as well.

Installation info:
- i386
- netinst CD sid_d-i 20040712

Hello Andre Felipe,

I have read through the history of this bug report, but I'm afraid with all
the different tries, it is not very clear any more what your problem is
exactly.

Could you try the installation again using the current images from [1] and
submit a _new_ bug report using the template from [2]?
Please:
- mention complete URL of the image you used
- explain where the install failed
- explain what you were trying to do (for example: are you trying to
configure LVM or just partition your disk?)
- attach the following logfiles from /var/log (or /var/log/debian-installer):
  syslog, messages, partman
If you are testing on different systems, please use different reports for each
system.

I would like to close the current installation report. Can you let me know if
that's OK with you.

Thank you very much for your efforts in testing d-i!

Attached is a patch to add a Swedish task. I didn't include the
OpenOffice.org l10n stuff though since it depends on the whole
OpenOffice.org package, which I don't think should be installed
automatically just because the user selects Swedish as the
language. #202907 will have to be solved first.

You probably tried the sarge_d-i branch:
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/sparc/20040713/sarge-sparc-netinst.iso

Try instead the sid_d-i branch:

I tried again with the cd image dated 20040712.

I hope this help.

How could I catch these logs from a brazilian portuguese
knoppix derivative (http://Kurumin.org) in order to list the
packages that installer used succesfully?

Well, that's entirely different from menu-items in openssh-client-udeb,
but:

  * Where would you put this question?

  * How would it activate ssh support? At the moment, you can't install
additional installer components after anna has run, as far as I can
see.

  * I don't think you'd want to install the server as well. The cases
where you want an ssh server in the installer are very specialized,
and they can have their own initrds (in fact, some of them already
do).

I can see the appeal of that kind of UI, though.

Why not just include it in the menu?
Maybe as menu-item 960 (after "Execute a shell") with title "Activate ssh
support". That could (ask to?) install both server and client with
dependencies.

Well, it hasn't really been tested much yet, but ...

Hm. There seem to be five ways to get anna to select something for
installation:

  * declare Enhances: on something that's already installed (will
install the package by default, or at least it's supposed to,
although I'm not sure I believe the code);

  * be a kernel module udeb;

  * be priority standard or above (will install the package by default);

  * be queued by something else using anna-install (will install the
package by default);

  * provide a menu item.

None of these exactly seem appropriate. Would anyone object if it became
priority standard? I guess the lowmem people would be very unhappy with
that.

It would be good if anna-install could be souped up so that you could
run it from the command line after anna runs the first time and have it
retrieve and install a package and any necessary dependencies. It
doesn't even seem necessarily too hard ...

In lieu of that, I guess I could add an Installer-Menu-Item: field so
that anna will offer it for retrieval in expert mode and an
isinstallable maintainer script which always fails so that main-menu
won't actually put it on the menu. Joey, how evil does that sound?

libc6-udeb, libcrypto0.9.7-udeb, libnss-files-udeb, and zlib1g-udeb.
