Debian Installer IRC meeting on Saturday 17 July at 20:00 UTC
Debian Installer IRC meeting on Saturday 17 July at 20:00 UTC - An open meeting of the Debian Installer "team" ("team" is very vague here, everyone can attend of course) will happen on IRC. Servers: freenode.net (just point your client to irc.debian.org) Channel: #debian-boot Time : Saturday 17 July at 20:00 UTC Points to be discussed: 1. Preparation of the beta release and any issues that might be blocking a release 2. Architecture status rollcall 3. Whatever else that needs to be discussed The detailed list of possible topics can be found at: http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?DebianInstallerMeetings Please edit it according to your wishes by keeping the main meeting goals (prepare a *release*, not discussing future plans) in mind. Preparing the meeting - People who plan to attend this meeting, please prepare yourselves regarding the above points. Open the key bug logs on bugs.debian.org, write down a list of things you want to see discussed regarding the above (or not). Read previous meeting minutes. Please try to be easy to identify on IRC. Not everyone is able to remember who are "tbm", "bubulle" and all these nice nicknames. This is an opened meeting on a public channel. During the meeting, please try to be concise and precise. There is a mention of a moderatorwho will only try to keep the meeting on tracks and summarize it afterwards. The meeting log will be recorded and published in debian-boot. There's no libfribidi0 on the netinst CD, which is probably the problem. When adding apt-installs, be sure to update tools/generate_di+k_list in debian-cd cvs. Done in this case, may take manty a while to merge it into his checkout since there have been lots of other debian-cd changes today. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

It complained that I didn't have an initrd configured (mainly because this is an oldworld machine, and I use BootX as a boot loader, so there was no boot loader configured. I didn't want the "small" kernel anyway, mainly because of the "initrd" issue, so I told it to "stop now". As a result, it complained about one or more steps aborting, and asked me if I wanted to try again. I said go ahead, and this time it gave me a bunch of options for which kernel I wanted to install. Presumably this is because it dropped priority to medium as a result of the error. In any case, I chose kernel-image-2.4.25-powerpc-pmac, which doesn't need an initrd for my hardware config. This time it wasn't concerned about an initrd, but it was upset that I didn't install a boot loader, telling me that I should boot by hand from /dev/hdc10, which I knew already. Sigh! 1) It automatically ejected the boot floppy when asking for the root floppy. Thanks for that, whoever put that patch in. However, when calling for the drivers floppy, it did not eject the root floppy. I had to use the paper-clip trick to eject it so I could insert the net-drivers floppy. It really should eject the root floppy automatically when it's done using it. 2) Select a keyboard layout failed. I have a Mac ADB keyboard, but I had to manually lie

I'm no expert on d-i. I just assumed that you would have more luck using sid_d-i, since there have been made some recent progress to these images that allowed me and other to get past a kernel panic that looks similar to yours (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=254808 and other similar reports). I think the best think you can do is to provide a complete dump of the entire boot process (e.g. using a serial console, if you have a serial cable for this purpose). This should reveal every little detail that may help the d-i developers on this mailinglist (maybe debian-sparc will be interested as well). - -- Frederik Dannemare | mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] GnuPG key: search for 'dannemare' on http://pgpkeys.mit.edu Key fingerprint: BB7B 078A 0DBF 7663 180A F84A 2D25 FAD5 9C4E B5A8 http://frederik.dannemare.net | http://www.linuxworlddomination.dk -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFA9c3ILSX61ZxOtagRAvx4AKCKglBr2fjn+pOOnpWjT3lqb0PtKACfZ0MT vhZsL5cMCH//Rj6Hsz0X1mA= =OeDQ -END PGP SIGNATURE-

This is because the spanish task, like many tasks, pulls in -ll packages like openoffice.org-l10n-es and mozilla-locale-es-es. These tend to be split out of huge software packages, and depend on them. So a user installing a web server in Spanish gets a ton of crap pulled in when they select the Spanish task. Solutions include: - Make the -ll packages only recommend the main packages, as the kde ones do. - Put the -ll packages in the tasks that install OOo and mozilla. But this is quite hard to maintain in tasksel. - Stop this translation splitting nonsense. --=20 see shy jo --9jxsPFA5p3P2qPhR Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/IXwM3xwsXJZQhyMRAuhLAJ9Uc4EdcHW0UJ27Ud5dJGPYItcZGwCfSQA+ 1FozA1q7FU4R6Eh505gGNrQ= =Dq7E -END PGP SIGNATURE- --9jxsPFA5p3P2qPhR-- --- Received: (at 202907-close) by bugs.debian.org; 14 Jul 2004 20:08:03 + >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Jul 14 13:08:03 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from newraff.debian.org [208.185.25.31] (mail) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1Bkq2t-0002ur-00; Wed, 14 Jul 2004 13:08:03 -0700 Received: from katie by newraff.debian.org with local (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1Bkpx4-0002Fz-00; Wed, 14 Jul 2004 16:02:02 -0400 From: Joey Hess <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Katie: $Revision: 1.51 $ Subject: Bug#202907: fixed in tasksel 2.05 Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sender: Archive Administrator <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2004 16:02:02 -0400 Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-6.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 X-Spam-Level: Source: tasksel Source-Version: 2.05 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of tasksel, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: tasksel_2.05.dsc to pool/main/t/tasksel/tasksel_2.05.dsc tasksel_2.05.tar.gz to pool/main/t/tasksel/tasksel_2.05.tar.gz tasksel_2.05_i386.deb to pool/main/t/tasksel/tasksel_2.05_i386.deb

Trivially, figure out which menu items appear in the iso-scan main menu that don't appear in the main menu for other images; then remove the Arabic translations for those menu items, rebuild, and test to confirm whether the crash still occurs. If it doesn't crash, binary searching will pinpoint the problematic string. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Under 2.4.26 I can get a network interface by simply inserting eth1394 and ohci1394 (and then, as usual, bringing it up with ifconfig). This interface has been sucessfully used to transfere >1 GB from my PPC based ibook. So Ethernet over Firewire seems to work at least on alpha and ppc (and, according to reports on the net, also on x86). Hence it would be great, if debian-installer offered to probe for firewire as well, so installs over firewire would be possible. Given that three archs support it and the extra effort is quite limited, even if only few people might use it, it would enhance the *coolness* quite a lot (especially=20 given all the serious discussions about patents, freenes, etc.). Bug#258500: is this a bug then?
It seems that the core of this bug is if anything, a linux kernel bug and should be reassigned to there. OTOH, it may not be a bug at all. I don't understand Josh's suggestion to use sata_sil instead of siimage. Are we loading the wrong module there? I'd like to get this bug reassigned to the appropriate package(s), whatever they may be. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#250843: followup
Did you ever get anywhere on this tail problem? Can you still reproduce it? One possibility is something is creating a new /var/log/messages. busybox tail will not follow to new files. I saw this once when a broken anna re-installed the rootskel udeb, which includes an empty /var/log/messages, but that was code that is not in a released version of anna. But perhaps something similar is going on. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I had razed the partition table and created a primary > partition spanning the entire drive, so I expect it would have said > primary for sure. I guess that the first hard disk had a partition table with type "sun" (it doesn't support primary and logical partitions) and the second had a "msdos" partition table. On a partition tables without primary and logical partitions partman doesn't show primary/logical column in order to save space on the row for other things (for example for partition names). This is not a big problem for hard disks as it is not usual to use on one system different types of partition tables. It is a problem for the LVM and RAID "partitions" but the support of LVM and RAID in partman needs reimplementation anyway. Could you explain what you mean by "it does not detect the partition types of the two linux partitions"? The normal behaviour is that the partitioner sees the partitions and the existing file system in them but doesn't set a mount point for them and the usage method is "don't use". The user has to change "don't use" to "format" or "use existing data" and to specify mount points manually as the installer can not remember the mount points from your previous install. The above obviously is no longer true and the errata don't list current problems. Maybe adding the following para would help. Package: partconf-mkfstab Version: 0.31 Severity: important When installing S/390 with debian-installer, I have swap on Partion 1 of device 0151. The fstab is written to use /dev/dasdb1, but when I IPL, I get a devfs-style device, /dev/dasd/0151/part1, and there is no /dev/dasdb1 device node. Either S/390 should not use devfs, or the fstab should be written to use devfs names. For some reason, /dev/dasda1, for the root partition, works fine even though there's no /dev/dasda or /dev/dasda1 node; I think this is because device 150, which is the first DASD listed in my parameter line, is the device I IPL from, and so when it's detected there's no way to tell whether it's going to be /dev/dasd/0150/disc or /dev/dasda. And just launch it but still failled at the same place with same message (Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs.) umm as said, i am not familiar with d-i (that is a long time that I installed my woody pc and pre-woody hppa boxes, so I don't remember all details :( ), but I don't understand this message: just after "ENTER" to start the install a ramdisk is well found and loaded, then during the load of the kernel, this one tries again to load (i suppose another) ramdisk which this time it doesn't find? The questions are: a) does it need this second ramdisk? b) if yes where is it supposed to look for on the cd, in the first ramdisk? Install to SATA with ICH5
Hi list, I know that there are workarounds for this problem but from what I have read from http://wiki.debian.net/?DebianInstallerFAQ, question 8, it should work with the newest installier image. I tried to install on a Supermicro Barebone Superserver 5013CTB, Intel Chipset 875P with the daily sarge-i386-netinst.iso image from 2004-07-12. The installer doesn't find the disks nor the controller. I also tried to change the bios setting from auto to compatibilty mode. No go. Knoppix 3.4 finds the ICH5 SATA Controller, even with auto mode. So I thought this might be of interest. Could you try the installation again using the current images from [1] and submit a _new_ bug report using the template from [2]? Well, that's entirely different from menu-items in openssh-client-udeb, but: * Where would you put this question? * How would it activate ssh support? At the moment, you can't install additional installer components after anna has run, as far as I can see. * I don't think you'd want to install the server as well. The cases where you want an ssh server in the installer are very specialized, and they can have their own initrds (in fact, some of them already do). I can see the appeal of that kind of UI, though. -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Joey, how evil does that sound? Why not just include it in the menu? Maybe as menu-item 960 (after "Execute a shell") with title "Activate ssh support". That could (ask to?) install both server and client with dependencies. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFA9R2Mgm/Kwh6ICoQRAlDeAJ9oJHjYEml/2CuPIbHo1rCxGn1N3wCghJgE VHMYZuUu/mOAWrkM77DUI1E= =s1Eh -END PGP SIGNATURE-

Hm. There seem to be five ways to get anna to select something for installation: * declare Enhances: on something that's already installed (will install the package by default, or at least it's supposed to, although I'm not sure I believe the code); * be a kernel module udeb; * be priority standard or above (will install the package by default); * be queued by something else using anna-install (will install the package by default); * provide a menu item. None of these exactly seem appropriate. Would anyone object if it became priority standard? I guess the lowmem people would be very unhappy with that. It would be good if anna-install could be souped up so that you could run it from the command line after anna runs the first time and have it retrieve and install a package and any necessary dependencies. It doesn't even seem necessarily too hard ... In lieu of that, I guess I could add an Installer-Menu-Item: field so that anna will offer it for retrieval in expert mode and an isinstallable maintainer script which always fails so that main-menu won't actually put it on the menu. Joey, how evil does that sound? > What are the dependencies (I noticed libcrypto is required which is not > present by default...)? libc6-udeb, libcrypto0.9.7-udeb, libnss-files-udeb, and zlib1g-udeb. -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
