The driver loads OK, but the network configuration fails to communicate over the network to configure with DHCP, and when hand-entered the continues to fail all communication over the network! I cannot download any packages to install beyond what is on the install CD. The apt-get portion of the installation fails. I downloaded the daily build (07/11/2004) of the Sarge installer, but it was no better than the official release -- the network still remains unavailable... I even retried the installers with the linux26 argument to try the 2.6 kernel, but no better results. I had an old version of the Sarge installer (dated 1-10-2004) that works. It installs the 2.4.23-1-386 kernel. The installation configures the network HW with the r8169 module and I can download packages from the Internet. There is a flaw when using ftp to move very large files, but I can seem to correct that if I set append=mem=1000M in my lilo.conf file. I have performed several installations of Sarge using various versions of the installer (on various platforms and configurations) over the past 7 months. I have been installing and using Debian for nearly 7 years and have been very happy, but this is the first time an installation has stumped me... I have read that the r8169 may be broken in several newsgroups. There appears to be debate on whether the flaw is in the driver or in the kernel headers... Is there any work being done on this to correct the r8169 problem? processing installation reports
I noticed that Joey Hess had stated d-i needed some help with processing installation reports so I started working on them tonight. Hopefully I didn't screw up too badly, I processed 32 reports tonight. If anyone noticed things I did wrong please let me know so that I can be less of a nuisance in the future. BTW - d-i still has around 436 reports yet to be processed. Thanks, Chris Cheney signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Some older Ultra60 compatible disks are predefined and selectable in de fdisk partitioning dialog. It would be nice to have the Fujitsu MAP3367NC (and others from the components list) added. In the Woody fdisk dialog i was forced to answer all kinds of obscure questions about sectors/track, interleave facter etc.. Although i have the documentation on the drive..i was unsure about a number of answers. Has any work been done on the sound-card (Audio Module 501-4155) of this Ultra60? Apart from wanting to install the 2.6 kernel having sound would be a bonus. Bug#239464: debian-installer [businesscard] wrong kernel
In regards to bug #239464 I ran into a similar situation: Debain-installer businesscard .iso daily snapshot from July 14 2004 or thereabouts: It repeatedly installed a -k7 kernel on a dual processor Intel Pentium II system, leading to a reboot soon after GRUB passed things on. I had the same problem on an Intel P4 system I tried the beta2(?) installer on some time ago. In that case the beta3 installer fixed the problem, but I think for the wrong reasons: I'm pretty sure that in the old case, as well as today it failed because I chose stable as the distro to track. Selecting testing makes it install a good -686 kernel. I guess that's how I fixed it by mistake last time. I'll change the sources.conf to track sarge instead of testing, and then when things become stable I'll be all set. I suppose when Sarge is released this may not be an issue as stable becomes what's on the CD?? or not. (It also gave me a 2.4-k7 kernel when I ran linux26 - stable) regards, Hamish -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Once the support is in the archive, we can add it to the netinst CD. Yes, that's what it does. It uses dmidecode if available, but doesn't break if it's not. m68k install daily build broken ?
Hi, i tried to install on a Qudra 840av and basically it doesnt work how i try it. There is a complete lack of documentation on how to unstuff the .sit files - The documentations merely mentions the existance of penguin. Though in the install/mac folder there are 2 penguin versions (18 and 19) and at least 4 initrds. Additionally there are root and root22 in the parent directory but no documentation on when to use what. With the beta4 at least the kernel comes up for me, throwing an error on mounting the rootfs. With the daily snapshots the kernel does not show any signs of life. In order to start from clean state the first thing this tool does is to set all partitions as unused. Then you canceled the autopartitioning tool and set mount points for the partitions in the way you wanted. The problem is that then you had to specify that you want to use the swap space. Patch for simpler Cardbus handling
ddetect (0.105) unstable; urgency=low [...] * Joey Hess - Load yenta_socket a bit later, after the discover run, because it looked strange to load a module before it said it was detecting hardware. It still loads before any other modules. The whole point of loading yenta_socket early is to load it before discover is run, so that discover will see the additional hardware which is available on the PCI bus after yenta_socket is loaded. Whether it is loaded before other modules or not doesn't matter. But this isn't very nice. Instead, I have now changed the hotplug handler to get the module directly from pci.lst, and enabled hotplug during the module loading phase. Unfortunately I left my Cardbus cards at home so I'm unable to test this. It would be very helpful if somebody with a Cardbus card could test this patch so I can commit it. Thanks in advance. I have changed netcfg to generate hotplug mapping entries for 16-bit PCMCIA cards now, in preparation for the upcoming upload of pcmcia-cs 3.2.5-8 where all network cards are managed by hotplug. Could someone please release and upload netcfg 0.72? Thanks. (Please CC me on replies.) -- Pelle -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#260025: [Proposal] The locale generation at the prebaseconfig
Package: prebaseconfig Severity: wishlist Tags: l10n patch d-i * Recai Oktas [2004-07-11 21:08:04+0300] Hi, I'm planning to work on a patch which generates the locale for the selected language at the prebaseconfig stage. There are some pretty good reasons to do so: * As a critical step for i18n, the locale generation should not be part of a kludgy script like termwrap. It deserves a well-defined conf script on its own right. * Some initialization scripts of the installed system may need to reach the locale info found in the /etc/environment file. Indeed, this is the case for console-screen.sh of console-tools and another bug report (#258681) has been filed for keymap.sh of console-common, which refers to this file. In the current implementation, /etc/environment is created at the end of the base-config, which introduces a problem for unicode consoles as explained below. * We modified the keymap handling to resolve a (IMO) serious d-i bug (#251550) somewhat related with the unicode consoles. It seems that a similar solution will be needed for languages using a UTF-8 locale (confirmed for tr_TR.UTF-8). The console must be in the unicode mode under the unicode locales, but _unless_ we consider to rehack [1] the keymap loading mechanism, /etc/environment is the only source to extract the locale info which mandates to install it in the first stage d-i and later use it to switch the unicode mode. In fact, IMHO, such an approach would present the most simple and natural solution for the problem at hand. * By moving the locale generation code to prebaseconfig, one of the central duties of termwrap will be transfered to this package, so we will be able to simplify the termwrap. According to my tests, I can safely state that, termwrap would not be needed at all for languages having a charset of ISO-8859-[1-15]. But it would have to be used mainly for Asian and Cyrillic consoles (not sure for the latter). As a side note, please notice that we wouldn't need to touch the termwrap in an effort to simplify it, till the proposed patch matures enough. So, have you any comments or objections? Regards, [1] The current code base of 'loadkeys' is rather messy, which makes such modifications difficult. Hi, In accordance with my proposal, I prepared a patch set. Please consult to my previous post quoted above to see the rationale behind these changes. Here goes the descriptions of patches attached. Feel free to review them. * 75generate-locales.gz: Prebaseconfig script to install the locale for the selected language. It gets the localecode from the debconf registery and does the following things: (1) Parse (and validate) the localecode (2) Generate the locale (3) Save the generated locale entry in /target/etc/locale.gen (4) Setup the locale environment in /target/environment Considering some possibilites for the future, the script is somewhat over-designed. It is driven by the 'debian-installer/locale' for the moment, but it is quite easy to make it work with multiple locales (changing a few line should be sufficient), though the current i18n design of d-i doesn't supply a multiple language selection feature (providing that one of them is the default). As I confirm from my real life experiences, this feature comes handy when people from different nations share the same computing environment. Perhaps we may add a new debconf menu in languagechooser which could be shown at the low priority. Another possibility which comes to mind regarding the multiple locales feature is that, almost all languages have a Unicode (UTF-8) and a non-Unicode variant locale (e.g. [EMAIL PROTECTED] and fr_FR.UTF-8), so we could install both of them for the user's convenience. I choosed the prebaseconfig package for the script and set the order to '75' (somewhere after the similar scripts, 65languagechooser and 70kbd-chooser). It is perfectly possible to put it another package like languagechooser or even in a separate package of its own. * prebaseconfig-generate-locales.patch: Required patch to add the script to the prebaseconfig package. The script has been heavily tested with a number of languages (to name a few; French, Turkish, Russian, Japanese and Ukrainian), so I think it should be safe to add it to d-i. Please note that, in order to resolve the bug #258681 completely, inclusion of this script is _mandatory_ since it creates the /etc/environment before the 2nd stage installation, and hence, feeds the /etc/init.d/keymap.sh with the locale environment. Powerpc netinst iso.
Hello manty, The powerpc netinst iso does not contain any 2.6 kernels .debs, and as thus, it fails to install a debian system using 2.6 kernel, since it tries to install some 2.4 kernels and fails. There are two solutions possible : 1) simply add the 2.6 kernels packages + initrd-tools + module-init-tools + mkvmlinuz. This would mean around 30MB of space used i think. Advantage: it is easy and works. Disadvantage: it grows the netinst iso another 30MB, and joeyh thinks that is too much for a netinst iso. = Additionally, in this case i want to modify the build so that the 2.6 kernels are the default ones, and the 2.4 kernels are the alternative ones, accessed via linux24. 2) split the netinst/businesscard isos into 2.4 and 2.6. This means that the isos will shirnk in size, as we gain around 10-15MB of space for removing those kernels. We duplicate the need of isos also. Here again the standard one will be the 2.6 kernel, and the 2.4 one will be marked with the additional 24 par in the name or something. What do you think of it, can you comment on this ? On what is the cost of both solutions from your point of view ? Friendly, Sven Luther -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also, it would be great if there was some discreet user feedback to inform that this hostname comes from the DHCP server. Maybe a little discreet DHCP chain added somewhere in the dialog ? Re: Powerpc netinst iso.
Sven, You didn't ask for my opinion, but here it is anyway... As a user, I think splitting netinst/businesscard into separate 2.4 and 2.6 isos is a wonderful idea. The fewer unneeded Megabytes I have to download and burn before I can get started installing the better! I usually know whether I'm going to want to do 2.6 or 2.4 before I start the download process. I think it's an excellent trade-off. Would it allow the the d-i components on the 2.6 iso to use 2.6-specific features at installation time? Would this be useful? Enjoy! Rick On Saturday, July 17, 2004, at 07:58 PM, Sven Luther wrote: Hello manty, The powerpc netinst iso does not contain any 2.6 kernels .debs, and as thus, it fails to install a debian system using 2.6 kernel, since it tries to install some 2.4 kernels and fails. Trouble?
