Fontconfig NMU? Third try....
A few weeks ago, I went on fontconfig during the NMU campaign to fix longstanding l10n issues (#361259 and the like). Given the relative importance of this package, I took an unusual care to check whether I wouldn't disturb other plans by the maintainer. Unfortunately, up to now, I haven't got any answer from the maintainer. I assume that Keith is indeed very busy on other tasks and can't answer right now. Simultaneously, the D-I team mentioned some needs for a new fontconfig version ; which I'm unfortunately not deeply awar about. Could we collaborate on this and upload a NMU that would fix these issues ? The l10n stuff is definitely not release critical but the other changes may have some importance for the graphical installer. So, is there something that we can do? Unless I get a very late objection from fontconfig maintainer(s), I'll go for the l10n NMU anyway. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

At tasksel I unticked everything except 'standard system'. I think pciutils should be added as part of the standard system, it was annoying to have to install it when the installer uses it. # /etc/init.d/exim4 status checking separate queue runner daemon...done (not running). checking combined SMTP listener and queue runner daemon...done (running). I was not asked to configure the mail system, but exim4 was installed with the 'local delivery' configuration. Shouldn't the installer mention this? Perhaps I missed the message. It looks pretty good otherwise. Bug: exim4 auto-configuration assumes short hostnames - When prompted for the hostname by the installer I gave a fully-qualified hostname. This was propagated to /etc/mailname without stripping the domain name, with the result that the domain name appears TWICE in /etc/mailname. Is the module for your kernel called 8139too? I use modconf to ensure that I get the right module and parameters. Check the kernel-docs for your kernel version. I have an nForce2 motherboard with 2 NICs, one is the on-board one, and the other is a realtek 8139 card, but NEITHER was found by etch d-i rc1 With lspci in consol, both of them could be listed. And when I try to manually install module with modprobe 8139too it is said that no such a module. Any ideas? -- Wang Xu -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". [RFR] Release Notes: Section on changes in Debian Installer added
Hi folks, I've filled in the section reserved for changes in the installation system. I'd appreciate a review. If you have any comments or additions, please let me know. The new text should become available here after the next build of the website: http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/i386/release-notes/ch-whats-new.en.html#s-newinst (change to your pet architecture if needed) Christian: could you give me the count of supported languages as it looks now? Martin: could you propose a text about the new subarches supported for arm with relevant links? Porters: the same goes for relevant changes for other architectures of course. You may also want to suggest content for: http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/i386/release-notes/ch-installing.en.html (change to your pet architecture if needed) I've not yet documented important known issues. If you are aware of any that will certainly not be solved for Etch, please let me know. But note that we already have a link to the errata. Device ordering for disks could be one issue to mention. Heads up: planned uploads for directfb for D-I
Dearest RMs, Only very recently Attilio Fiandrotti (our g-i guru) has been able to solve two fairly serious issues in the graphical installer. We now know how to fix them and both fixes will require an upload of directfb. The first issue is completely broken touchpad support, important for installations on laptops. The patch for this has been tested successfully on various machines and is ready for upload now. The second issue is even more important: a crash of the graphical installer on AMD64 when switching consoles. Cause turned out to be the use of pthread_cancel() for which only on AMD64 a library (libgcc_s) is needed that was not included in images and for which no udeb is currently available. The upstream maintainer of directfb is currently working on a patch to remove that call (which he says is evil anyway). We will test that patch ASAP and coordinate a second upload of directfb with that patch with Guillem. Though these issues are probably not RC, we hope that you will allow us to fix them in time for Etch as they are the currently the most important issues affecting the usability of the graphical installer. The one remaining important issue is incomplete support of non-US keymaps (dead keys and combining characters). Cheers, FJP pgp9dTfjVUgKj.pgp Description: PGP signature

It would also be nice if we could take some time to support detection of different types of touchpads and set appropriate defaults for each, or introduce configuration options to allow users to tune the behavior of their touchpad. Below the values I set in the X.Org configuration file for my Alps touchpad, which make it work quite nicely (I've got edge scrolling set fairly tightly). It uses the synaptics driver but really needs some different values from the defaults the driver has for real synaptics pads. [ 5905:0.000] --> Caught signal 6 (unknown origin) <-- libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work Aborted adding this library (and full libc) to the chroot prevents the crash. Good news! Is it ok to include the library or should the input driver be changed to not use pthread_cancel()? Last night, talking with Frans Pop and Kurt Roeckx, it turned out that including correct libraries may be a bit complicated right now, and possibly we could not make it in time for Etch. So, i was asked to investigate about the possibility to remove pthread_cancel() calls from DirectFB code: dok, do you believe that's possible / easy to do? Should be possible with minor effort. pthread_cancel() is evil anyways. Dear d-i guys, if you have a laptop could you give this iso a try and report how the touchpad works? if it's ok i'll ask Guillem to include Ville's revised patch in debian sources. This mini.iso doesn't work well here. 1. On my laptop with synaptics touchpad I can move the mouse very well, speed an sensitivity are fine. But I see error messages on the vt1 "Unexpected event from touchpad ..." when I for example tap to select an entry from a list, let's say the language list, but selecting the entry works. What is not working are the buttons on the bottom "Screenshot, Back, Continue". No reaction when tapping on them or when pushing them with the external keys of the touchpad. The focus is changed though. on my laptop i could not reprodue this, but might be interesting for debugging, so cc'ing directfb-dev. cheers Attilio 2. On another laptop I have here for some time (with Alps PS2 Glidepoint touchpad) it's completely unusable. The cursor moves extremely slowly or doesn't move completely (sensitivity problem?) while tapping on the pad and using the external buttons of the pad works well. experienced something similar on my father's laptop: i guess x,y effective input range has to be somehow queried and taken into account. cheers Attilio -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Another debian user i contacted for testing reported, more or less, the same crash, which sadly i cannot reproduce nor fix because on my laptop Ville's patch works perfectly. Let's not do this and let's also start implementing the previous patch so it makes Etch. We're really running out of time to experiment! After discussing with fjp it was decided to go with the original patch i wrote (the one attached to BR #400579, currently applied upstream): Guillem, could you please proceed with upload ? I really hope we'll be able to fix the bug in Ville's patch soon, as it's much more complete than mine: we may be even able to integrate ville's patch in a future DirectFB upload. Currently, infact, we're facing a bug [1] which Denis Oliver Knopp said should be fixable with a minor patch to DirectFB; patching DFB should be easier than adding, at this point of the release process, a new library (libgcc1) to the installer. In the case DOK provides the patch in time we may need to request you, Guillem, a further upload for DirectFB, provided that's still possible. cheers Attilio [1] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=373253 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". What is not working are the buttons on the bottom "Screenshot, Back, Continue". No reaction when tapping on them or when pushing them with the external keys of the touchpad. The focus is changed though. 2. On another laptop I have here for some time (with Alps PS2 Glidepoint touchpad) it's completely unusable. The cursor moves extremely slowly or doesn't move completely (sensitivity problem?) while tapping on the pad and using the external buttons of the pad works well. The tricky point is "how to know that a given language is or isn't complete", to avoid asking this question for all installs. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Installation on HPPA
Hello, I'm going to install Debian on HP workstation (c3700) sometime between 18th and 22th of December. There is currently HP-Unix so the server will be installed "from scratch". Since the HP-PA architecture is probably rare maybe there might be something I could try for you eg. install sarge and then upgrade to etch. (The server will be used as intranet web server => LAMP + other similar SW.) We (probably) won't use LVM nor RAID - the final decision was not made yet. Once installed the system won't be available for testing anymore. Ales -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I can't live without drag support so I started to add that and then I wanted to slow the cursor down a bit so I tried to add some rudimentary acceleration stuff. The pressure handling was removed but I suppose it could be added back in. I've attached my current code. It feels quite good to me but I'd like to get other people's opinion before I go and mess up the code currently in cvs... Bug#400833: installation-report: unclear keyboard use under installgui
Thanks very much for your response. > You can open/close the sublists using + and - I knew something had to be available, didn't try those keys, though. It would have tweaked if instead of a triangle there would have been a +. This is a usability issue that can be improved by some way of getting help, even generic help on keyboard equivalents to mouse commands, during installation. Or maybe changing the triangles to a +. > Yes, sounds likely. The installer will have set up the system inside the > VM to UTC as it is probably the only OS inside the VM. It's pretty hard > to detect what a VM is running on :-P > This is one usecase we have not reconned with. > Just correct the UTC setting in /etc/default/rcS. One of the first things I do in all my Debian installs is to install ntp. The installation already assumes internet connection, couldn't it also by default install ntp-client and so reduce the need for time information down to simply the timezone of the installation? I know that in the case of a VM there's the problem that the emulated CMOS may not be writable, or at least remember the value that was written, but that wouldn't matter much if ntp kept the time ticking along correctly. [In general, the use of VM's is exploding in my sphere of work, and I would suggest adding VM installations as a use case. Using VM's I can develop and even destructively test on many O/S's simultaneously on my laptop with no need for network connections and without fear of destroying stuff I need (if I'm careful).] > I guess you mean during installation of packages from tasks? If so, that > is a known issue and the result of some packages still using an obsoleted > command to set the title. Yes, I do mean that. Time to issue usability bugs on the use of that command. :-) Overall, great job. I hope you don't mind these silly comments. Please test the PPPoE configuration with newest D-I images
Hello, (Sorry if any of the people in CC receives this mail twice; I didn't know if any of you are listed on Debian-boot). Recently a new version of ppp-udeb has entered Debian unstable and now is included in the daily D-I images. This version of ppp-udeb should allow configuration of PPPoE connections directly from the D-I environment and has a lot of significant improvements over the older versions. Since it is likely that this version will be the one included on the installation images, it would be good to have feedback (both positive and negative, if any :-D) and tests related to PPPoE. How to test: 1. Download a businesscard ISO image appropriate for your architecture[1] People on i386 architecture should download this image: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-businesscard.iso 2. At the boot prompt type append "anna/choose_modules=ppp-udeb" after the method (expert, expertgui) : expert anna/choose_modules=ppp-udeb This will make sure the module doing the PPPoE configuration will be loaded and no additional handwork will be necessary. Note: Unfortunately, for yet an unknown reason for which the main-menu skipps over the PPPoE menu item, so expert mode must be used, or one must go back to the main menu and select the relevant menu entry after the additional components if normal mode is used ("install anna/choose_modules=ppp-udeb" is typed at the boot prompt). 3. Follow the regular steps in configuration (you will have to manually select the items in the main menu and follow the steps below if you used the boot line with expert): * Choose language, country, locales, additional locales (you can go with the defaults, localization is not relevant for this test) * Select a keyboard layout * Detect and mount CDROM (go with the defaults; you can start PC card services, then go with the defaults until you get back to the main menu) * Load installer components from CD (do not change the defaults) * Detect network components * !!! go up one item and select the "Configure and start a PPPoE connection" step !!! The PPPoE detection will start. 4. Provide the correct login information for PPPoE[*]. 5. PPPoE should be configured and the installer should be able to use it to connect to the internet. You can raise the debconf priority now and continue the installation. [*] Unfortunately, at the moment, if the wrong login information is introduced, the module does not handle this error (the connection will not be made but the user is not informed that the wrong information was provided). I hope this will be fixed in the near future. [1] The businesscard image is the smallest image that contains the ppp-udeb module which is responsible for PPPoE configuration. In other words, this is the smallest image that can provide PPPoE configuration from the D-I environment. Larger images should be able to do the right thing, too. -- Regards, EddyP = "Imagination is more important than knowledge" A.Einstein -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#400815: debian-installer: Can't skip to configure package manager after failed install base system after succeeded install base system
reassign 400815 base-installer severity 400815 minor thanks On Wednesday 29 November 2006 08:27, Olaf van der Spek wrote: > But why? > I canceled the second "Install the base system" before it touched my > system, so there shouldn't be a reason to do it again. Because currently when you cancel on that question the installer does not know that the installation step had already been completed successfully. It just knows that it was broken off the last time it has been run. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, I got the same failure in my 2nd attempt. Do you remember what the last daily was that worked for you? FWIW, this happens on a NSLU2 (arm/ixp4xx). I don't see the same on arm/iop32x, even when running in lowmem level 2 (as the NSLU2 does). -- Martin Michlmayr http://www.cyrius.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
