Bug#602129: Further information on bug #602129

2010-11-04 Thread Miguel Figueiredo
Hi,

the problem seems to be related with extended partitions/partition alignment.
The same issue as bug report #597088 and #593733.

Errata 20101104

2010-11-04 Thread Miguel Figueiredo
Hi all,

added partitioning issues on kFreeBSD to the errata.

CCing aurel32 as he is involved in partman-ufs and may sched some light on
this kFreeBSD issue.

As soon as I sort out a problem with wml errata.wml (it fails on pass3) on cvs
i will also publish there.

Bug#602147: Fw: Squeeze installation freezes on network interfaces detection

2010-11-04 Thread Christian PERRIER
Quoting Felipe FV (kille...@terra.com.br):
 Chirstian,

I'm trying to reply direct to the bug report, but it does not work (does not
 update).
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=602147
This is why I'm sending the e-mail to you.

When I disabled the floppy in the BIOS setup the installation seemed to find
 (detect) the network card faster.
Is there any chance of the floppy conflicting (or something like that) with
the network card, causing the long time to detect it?

Maybe. Hardware issues can be weird sometimes..:)

 Other things:

 - I downloaded the install:
 http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-CD-1.iso

 - I tested the installation (with floppy enabled) to see the log (Alt+F4). I
saw lots and lots of FAT errors:
kernel: [number] FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT
filesystem, filesystems will be case sensitive!.

These sound like warnings which could be ignored.

 - My USB mouse is turned off every certain period and then back on again
(detected) - saw it at the log too.

Nothing I can really tell here, I'm afraid.

Re: d-i meeting summary - 2010.11.03

2010-11-04 Thread Gaudenz Steinlin
Hi

Unfortunately I could not attend the meeting.

Excerpts from Miguel Figueiredo's message of Mit Nov 03 23:20:29 +0100 2010:
 Current isues:
 =

 * Known blockers:
 1 - #519254 - Debian Lenny/s390 - unable to boot with a dedicated /boot
 partition
 2 - #599203 - data corruption due to os-prober
3 - #589701 - problems with yaboot for powerpc with added controller
 4 - issue with initramfs-tools affecting s390
fixed! - #600852 - apt problem due to empty indexes
5 - #579519 - grub-installer writing the bootloader to the usb disk
instead of the primary boot device. (merged with 568529, 589823).
I would consider this a blocker as well. I looked into this during
the Paris BSP, but as I could not create a virtualized environment
to reproduce it I gave up. But looking at the grub installer code
it seems quite likely that the bug is still present.

Bug#602380: SATA CD/DVD drive and sr0 errors

2010-11-04 Thread Felipe FV
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Hi,
I'm having some problems with Debian Squeeze installation.
Right after selecting the mirror to download updates, the installation stops
for a long time in Downloading file 1 of 1
(or something like that). When I start the log (Alf+F4) I see lots and lots of
Buffer I/O errors on Device sr0, that is my CD/DVD drive.

I don't know if this is related to drivers, because it's a brand new LG
GH22NS40 (SATA),
and when I turn on my old CD drive (an Optiarc IDE), the errors happen just one
or two times,
but the installation continues in less than five seconds.

I tried to install Squeeze with 2 ISOs that I have here (different weeks and
builds). The errors persisted.

QUESTIONS:
Is there any report about this? Could it be a driver problem?
I am running the OS here right now with the LG GH22NS40. If anyone knows a
procedure to prove the drive, just tell me and I will do it.

My hardware: Intel i3 530 2,93Ghz, 4GB RAM, ASUS P7H55M-BR, SAMSUNG HD 250GB,
SEAGATE HD 80GB, LG DVDRW, C3 TECH 500W POWER SUPPLY.

Bug#601381: installation-reports: lenovo x201 laptop with d-i 20101025-09:05

2010-11-04 Thread Xavier Oswald
Hi,

I just got this new laptop today.
I installed it with d-i daily build 20101104.

Installation went fine except for these issues:

 * No wireless WPA2 support. I understand this won't be supported until
 squeeze+1

I didn't try to install with wireless. During network selection both ethernet
and
wireless devices were detected.

 * DHCP configuration did not work, I had to supply IP address manually

DHCP just worked fine for me.

 * My Windows 7 partitions were not available in the grub boot menu, even
though it recognized that win7 was installed. Running 'update-grub' manually
 resolved this.

I removed all windows related stuff. So I cannot comment.

Everything went fine.

The sarge example was replaced with one for squeeze as of debootstrap
1.0.14 (Debian bug #534575). You can install a later version with this
amended manpage via Debian Backports.

This caused udpkg to segfault (on Ubuntu, but I see no reason why it
should be Ubuntu-specific). Here's the start of read_block:

static int read_block(FILE *f, char **ml)
  {
  char ch;
  char *multiple_lines = *ml;
  char buf[BUFSIZE];

  while (((ch = fgetc(f)) == ' ')  !feof(f)) {
  fgets(buf, BUFSIZE, f);
  multiple_lines = (char *) di_realloc(multiple_lines,
strlen(multiple_lines) + strlen(buf) + 2);

So leaving *ml undefined on entry means that (a) realloc's behaviour is
undefined and (b) strlen's behaviour is undefined. Whoops.

Petter's patch would crash too. Since the pointer in *ml on entry may
have been realloced, attempting to free it may be equivalent to a
double-free, which could corrupt the malloc arena.

On the one hand, this is a tiny memory leak in udpkg, and it really
isn't worth a great deal of effort, so I would be inclined to just
revert this. On the other hand, if you think about it, read_block's
interface is pretty poor. It returns int but there is only one possible
return value, and it takes a char ** which is only ever initialised in
one way. This isn't good design. Here's a patch implementing an
improved interface, which is simpler, safer, and more efficient:

Bug#602421: installation-reports: Squeeze Installation - apt does not appear to be scanning multiple DVDs correctly during graphical installation

2010-11-04 Thread Jon 'maddog' Hall
Package: installation-reports
Severity: important
Tags: d-i

Started graphical install.

Partitioned disk, formatted filesystems

Outputted label of Installation disk and asked if I wanted to scan any more
disks. I answered yes, opened the DVD drive, put second of 8 disks in,
closed drive, hit continue. Heard disk spin up and after a while it stopped
and put same question up on screen about scanning more disks, but it did not
put up second Disk's label the way it did the first disk. I continued to put
more disks in until all 8 were in, then I clicked on no to any more disks,
and hit continue. It just sat there, so I went to lunch figuring it was
building a table for apt. I was at lunch 1/2 hour and came back to no change.

I started the installation again, fed in all eight disks again, same thing
happened.

I started the installation again, put in only one disk, then said clicked no
to more disks, hit continue, but it seemed to hang again.

Then I started the installation again and said no to more disks, and the
installation went fine.

from an installed system and running depmod fixes the problem, so that
module just needs to get added to list of modules to be built.

This is why I'm sending the e-mail to you.

When I disabled the floppy in the BIOS setup the installation seemed to
find (detect) the network card faster. Is there any chance of the floppy
conflicting (or something like that) with the network card, causing the
 long time to detect it?

 Other things:

 - I downloaded the install:
 http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testin
 g-amd64-CD-1.iso

 - I tested the installation (with floppy enabled) to see the log (Alt+F4).
I saw lots and lots of FAT errors: kernel: [number] FAT: utf8 is not a
recommended IO charset for FAT filesystem, filesystems will be case
 sensitive!.

 - My USB mouse is turned off every certain period and then back on again
(detected) - saw it at the log too.

Touchscreen support in d-i

2010-11-04 Thread Thibaut Girka
This might not be the best moment to talk about that, but well...

With the rise of tablet PCs, smartphones, etc., there are more and more
computers with touchscreen as the primary input device, and possibly no
real keyboard.

In order to properly support such computers, d-i needs two things:
touchscreen calibration and an on-screen keyboard.

To address the first issue, we can run something like xinput-calibrator
right after X is started (and save the result in the target's
xorg.conf.d), it'll take care of everything, and won't show up if it
doesn't detect any touchscreen.
However, xinput-calibrator is written in C++, and I don't think it's
welcome in d-i?
Maybe this could be reconsidered, xinput-calibrator could rewritten in
C, or something else could be chosen...

I've already been working a bit on the second issue and have working
matchbox-keyboard and matchbox-window-manager (a WM is needed in order
for matchbox-keyboard to run properly) udebs.
However, there is still a lot to do:
- When should it be started? Currently, it's started right after X, with
a script in /lib/debian-installer.d/
- How to detect that there is no physical keyboard?
- The on-screen keyboard should use the selected layout. This should be
easy by (re)starting matchbox-keyboard with some environment variables.
- There are only a few layouts, and they are often incomplete/too basic.
Does it worth the pain of fixing them/adding new ones? Can't it be done
in a semi-automatic way?
- What to do if the selected layout doesn't exist for matchbox? Let it
fallback to the default one? Or should we display only
matchbox-supported layouts?

I think the first three points can be addressed by starting
matchbox-keyboard from somewhere within console-setup, but I'm not too
sure yet, as I have only had a quick look at this part of d-i.

Any comment is welcome,
Thibaut Girka.

Bug#593235: New patch

2010-11-04 Thread Martin Michlmayr
* Thibaut Girka t...@sitedethib.com [2010-10-27 00:26]:
So, here is a new version of the patch.
 Changes:
 - Removed U-Boot env related things (now, I have to unblock this bug)
 - Removed kernel re-compression (useless)
 - Added a quick hack to workaround the padding thing, since #584166
probably won't be accepted upstream (I'll sort that out later).

Looks good to me. There were only 2 minor problems:

 - The list of support hardware (in README) should've been updated.
 - Somtimes you added GTA02 as the first device rather than follow
   alphabetical order.

I adjusted this and commited the patch.

Thanks!

Re: Touchscreen support in d-i

 - How to detect that there is no physical keyboard?

In principle console-setup should be able to detect that. In some cases
it might not be possible to determine it accurately, so it may be good
to keep an icon available to start it from the touchpad.

 - There are only a few layouts, and they are often incomplete/too basic.
Does it worth the pain of fixing them/adding new ones? Can't it be done
 in a semi-automatic way?

It should just support xkb-data layouts.
