Bug#601495: #601495 - installation-report: The installer not work with SATA disks and PATA CDROM

2011-01-19 Thread Frédéric Massot

Hi all,

Now Squeeze RC1 is available for testing.
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/squeeze_di_rc1/

Can you try if the problem you reported persists?

Hi,

I tested the Squeeze RC1 (netinst).

I boot from the CD, I have the selection screen of the installation or
expert mode.

With the normal installation CD spins, I have a black screen and the cd
stops.

With the installation in expert mode, I see the kernel boot then stops
after the detection of SATA drives.

It would be convenient if we could use netconsole to see all the kernel
logs and copy them.

Regards.

Debian Installer development for Wheeze - time to begin

2011-01-19 Thread Otavio Salvador
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi team!

Debian Installer 6.0 (Squeeze) is near done. We are finishing the RC2
release that ought to be used for Squeeze release. Minor stuff is
already pending for 6.0.1 (r1) but in general the installer work for
this release is complete.

We ought to focus or development now for Wheeze and this should start
now. Joey has done the GIT conversion of our repositories and then I
wished to send this e-mail to clarify how we should work regarding
branches and like.

We won't create squeeze branches until necessary. We have tags for
every upload and thus it is quite easy to branch from the required one
in case we need to fix something for 6.0.1 or later. master branch
should now be used for Wheeze's work.

Thanks to all the work done and let's make installer even better for
Wheeze :-D

Yes, apparently, there's no example about keyboard-configuration in
the pressed documentation in the Installation Guide.

I'm unsure where the example-preseed.txt file which you mention comes
from, though. At least it is not in the installation guide.

Bug#610553: installation-reports: does not cleanly deconfigure network configured with DHCP

2011-01-19 Thread Jeffrey Sheinberg
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Hi,

Install of squeeze-rc1 (expert mode, non-graphical) from *.iso - works
great except the network is not cleanly deconfigured for DHCP.

Solution - please send SIGUSR2 to the udhcpc process at end of
installation (menu items: finish up the installation, or abort the
installation).

Discussion - after the installation completes successfully, the computer
reboots into the new installation, however, the network configuration
via DHCP fails in the new installation.

This is because my ISP's DHCP server already has handed out a lease to
my computer and this lease is still active.

This active lease was obtained during the installation process, however,
the installation process did not release the DCHP lease before it
terminated the installation.

Why hasn't this problem been reported before? Answer - most routers
will just re-offer an active DHCP lease to the same MAC address that had
originally obtained the lease. However, my ISP's DHCP servers will only
re-offer an active leave when the requested ip-address matches the
ip-address that was provided with the original lease.

Note that on my other production Debian lenny and squeeze systems,
the DHCP lease is always released when the network is deconfigured.

Thanks,

Jeffrey Sheinberg

tarballs (#286578), I just discovered the existence of the
di-netboot-assistant package. Among other things it appears to work
around the problem of netboot tarballs not existing by creating it's
own top level hierarchy.

I think this bug should still be fixed in the netboot tarballs produced
by d-i. Once it is then di-netboot-assistant (and any other netboot
management code/wetware working around this problem) can be simplified.

I was shocked to see this bug recently celebrated it's 6th anniversary!

Bug#610525: Preseed: Debian Installer hangs during late_command

could also cause it to hang)

i have had no luck with this little workaround.

Bug#610561: installation-reports: r8196 based network card does not work with stock installer kernel

Comments/Problems:

This notebook (unfortunately) has a r8196 based network card, which
requires non-free firmware. the stock installer-image asks for this
firmware (rtl8168d-2.fw). i found this firmware and put it on the
usb-stick. after that the installer does not ask for the firmware
anymore, and dmesg shows that it has loaded the firmware and actually
started the driver (link up etc). however dhcp config over the network
fails, as does anything else.

after tips from #debian-boot i replaced the r8169.ko that the installer
loads with the one from linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64_2.6.32-30_amd64.deb,
which makes the installer work and configure the network correctly. so
it seems that version of the driver is better than the older one...

any questions or anything i shoudl try: holler

Bug#434034: memtest boot options

2011-01-19 Thread Matt Taggart
Regarding Russell's previous comment in #434034 about memtest86+ boot
options

1) The memtest86+ ships with two versions, one for grub2. See
  /usr/share/doc/memtest86+/README.Debian
  for more info.

2) It does support some options, for example to boot serial
   console=ttyS0,115200n8
I use d-i in serial mode often and it works well, it would be nice to
also be able to boot memtest86+ in serial mode as well. For me 95% of
the time the above console line is what I need, but I do have some
cases where I need different settings, so being able to specify them
  would be good.

Re: Debian Installer development for Wheeze - time to begin

2011-01-19 Thread Miguel Figueiredo
Hi all,

...also to close this cycle and prepare for the next, it can be a good
time to clean the BTS from all the noise/old/irrelevant stuff assigned
to d-i [1] and leave the relevant info for 'Wheeze'^y ;-).

Just some quick numbers:
1473 outstanding bugs.
110 with patches.
218 assigned to installation reports.

IMHO bugs allocated to installation reports are not very useful.
They should be closed on success or reassigned to the relevant package,
so the maintainers(s) can look into/merge/close/...

I will try to continue to make some maintenance on [1], feel free to

Yes, apparently, there's no example about keyboard-configuration in
the pressed documentation in the Installation Guide.

I have added some the other day.

Dennis, can you confirm that

d-i console-keymaps-at/keymap select us
d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select us

is enough?

I'm unsure where the example-preseed.txt file which you mention comes
from, though. At least it is not in the installation guide.

It's generated from the installation guide:

./build/buildweb.sh:./preseed.pl -r $manual_release $PRESEED
$destination/example-preseed.txt

That just needs to get done to update the file mentioned above.

Samuel

Bug#610526: Preseed: Debian Installer ignores hostname parameter

2011-01-19 Thread Matthew Palmer
package netcfg
tag 610526 +moreinfo
tag 610526 +unreproducible
thanks

Hi Dennis,

I'm having some trouble reproducing your bug report.

Here are the exact steps I took:

1) Download the mini.iso from
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-i386/20090123lenny8/images/netboot/
(other mirrors should have the same; md5sum is
1f497d52bb97c03810d3e87d8ecf5d94)

2) Boot the installer ISO in a KVM VM

3) At the graphical isolinux boot screen, press TAB and add 'hostname=basic'
to the end of the command line

(I can't use priority=critical because I need to set a local Debian mirror,
and auto=true just asks for a preseed file -- which I don't have because you
haven't provided it)

4) Manually configure the network (I disabled my DHCP server so that it
wouldn't provide a hostname) with an IP address that doesn't reverse resolve
(to avoid hostname being overridden via rDNS)

5) When it asks to configure the mirror, drop into a console and verify that
the temporary environment has the right hostname with cat /etc/hostname

6) Let the installation proceed, automatically partitioning the disk and
setting up some dummy users

7) When it comes to installing grub, drop back to a console and verify that
the target environment has the right hostname with cat /target/etc/hostname

8) Complete the install, reboot, note that the booted system has the correct
hostname.

Now, I know that a number of things are different between your report and my
method of reproduction, but they *should* (big emphasis there) be irrelevant
to how the hostname is preseeded. Obviously one of them isn't irrelevant,
so we need to work out what it is.

Things to check:

* The kernel and initrd you're booting with; can I get the md5sums of them
and where you got them from?

* Booting without a preseed file... it's possible that your preseed file is
doing something hinky, so if you *must* test with a preseed file, we'll
  need a copy of it.

* Dropping priority=critical for the purposes of testing would be
good, too, to keep things consistent and to rule it out (although early
testing showed that /etc/hostname had the right value in it).

Thanks,
- Matt

Bug#610553: installation-reports: does not cleanly deconfigure network configured with DHCP

2011-01-19 Thread Matthew Palmer
clone 610553
reassign 610553 finish-install
reassign -1 di-utils-reboot
thanks

On Wed, Jan 19, 2011 at 03:32:59PM -0500, Jeffrey Sheinberg wrote:
Install of squeeze-rc1 (expert mode, non-graphical) from *.iso - works
great except the network is not cleanly deconfigured for DHCP.

Solution - please send SIGUSR2 to the udhcpc process at end of
installation (menu items: finish up the installation, or abort the
 installation).

That can probably be arranged. It covers two separate packages, so I'm
going to clone out this report to get it fixed everywhere (finish-install
for regular completion, and di-utils-reboot for Abort the installation).
di-utils-exit-installer (Exit the installer) is only used in installer
demos, apparently, so that probably doesn't need to be changed.

(Note to implementors: example code for wiping out the DHCP client is in
netcfg/killall.sh; only minor adaptations should be required, although it
appears that different DHCP clients use different methods to signal release,
so that'll complicate matters)

However...

That must make life *really* entertaining for the ISP's support staff after
an area-wide power outage. It also appears to be in contravention of a
quick skim of RFC2131, since there's no requirement for clients to send a
DHCPRELEASE. Section 4.4.6 states, Note that the correct operation of DHCP
does not depend on the transmission of DHCPRELEASE messages. I wonder what
other brokenness your ISP is hiding...

Re: propsed addition to d-i errata

please add the following paragraph to the errata (edit at will of
 course):

Potential isntallation problems with RTL8169-based network cards
The Debian installer may be unable to use network cards based on the
RTL8169 family during the installation, which includes downloading
packages during installation through these cards. The installed system
is unaffected by the problem. See #558316, #603673, #609388, #610561

I agree.

Miguel, please add that this is going to be fixed in 6.0.1.

Bug#610553: installation-reports: does not cleanly deconfigure network configured with DHCP

2011-01-19 Thread Christian PERRIER
Quoting Matthew Palmer (mpal...@debian.org):
 clone 610553
 reassign 610553 finish-install
 reassign -1 di-utils-reboot
 thanks

Solution - please send SIGUSR2 to the udhcpc process at end of
installation (menu items: finish up the installation, or abort the
  installation).

That can probably be arranged. It covers two separate packages, so I'm
going to clone out this report to get it fixed everywhere (finish-install
for regular completion, and di-utils-reboot for Abort the installation).

I'd say that the first bug should be dealt in netcfgwhich should
provide the appropriate finish-install.d hook

Yeah, I thought about that, but it appears as though finish-install wants to
own all those sorts of things itself. I would have expected
50config-target-network to be in netcfg, but it's not. On the other hand,
if that's more of a historical screwup, moving it (and the
currently-hypothetical release-dhcp-lease) to netcfg isn't something I'm
philosophically opposed to).

Comments/Problems:

I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze without getting any problem. But after the
first reset of the system, system showed KDM properly. But, when I enter my
user name and password, system resets itself. I also cannot pass console
screens by pressing ctrl + alt + Fx keys at this state. If I power cycle the
desktop PC and don't enter user name/pass at the KDM screen, then I can switch
with ctrl+alt+fx. I tried to downgrade to lenny at this stage but nothing has
changed. So; I had to install a clean Lenny system and I'm sorry I forgot to
take installation record before the installation.

best regards
