The installer *really* wants to claim swap partitions. In particular it decided it needed to initialize a swap device and refused to do anything else prior to initializing it. This was problematic because RAID needed to be initialized beforehand as this was swapping on a RAID device (what use is filesystem security, if the kernel bugs out due to corrupt swap?). Likely it was detecting swap signatures on one of the subdevices, but it absolutely would not undo all changes. Selecting that kept the swap partition marked for initialization, as a result I was unable to do the RAID initialization needed before swap initialization. -- (\___(\___(\__ --= 8-) EHM =-- __/)___/)___/) \BS (| e...@gremlin.m5p.com PGP 8881EF59 |) / \_CS\ | _ -O #include stddisclaimer.h O- _ | / _/ \___\_|_/82 04 A1 3C C7 B1 37 2A*E3 6E 84 DA 97 4C 40 E6\_|_/___/ ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Hi, Thanks for your report. From the amount of copying done (I later used grub-floppy to create a disk, which worked well), not all of the stage files were copied onto it. Some details which may be important: (hd0): SCSI drive with GRUB boot block in MBR and a single NTFS partition (hd1): Newly installed S-ATA drive with single NTFS partition (hd2), shifted up from (hd1): Old P-ATA drive with several partitions, including ext3 root (containing /boot/grub/*stage* files) and swap. Scenario: I was trying to fix my system, which had become unbootable after I had installed an S-ATA controller and drive. Apparently this caused my drive numbers (hd1 and up) to shift up. First, I tried to install GRUB onto (hd0), which failed, probably because GRUB had no place to write its stage files, and I saw no way to tell it where to do so. Next I tried to write GRUB to a boot floppy, which wouldn't boot. Eventually I managed to enter a chroot from which I executed grub-floppy, which made a usable floppy. -- Alain Kalker -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-3-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- Floppies disks are not supported anymore so i am closing this report. This systems has had for years a Windows XP, an HP recovery partition and a debian sid gnu/linux. One day I was told grub 2 would not boot. It stopped at Wellcome to Grub. Apparently each time you boot to XP it breaks the boot sector (grub is installed to /dev/hda). So I booted with a netinst CD to reinstall grub. I tried both graphical rescue and textual rescue. I don't configure the network for it, just language (Catalan), keyboard Spanish, time zone (Madrid) and root partition /dev/hda6. If I open an installer shell I don't have the date command, but I do echo hi f ls -l and f has the correct wall clock time. If I choose to reinstall grub it does, and when I reboot I get the correct grub menu. If I then choose sid it detects the root filesystem has a last used time mark of 2 hours into the future and requires a manual fsck. The fsck /dev/hda6 fixes only this time mark but takes a long time looking at anything else that might be wrong. I'm at GMT+2 now, so it seems something does not work when accessing the root filesystem in order to reinstall grub, and leaves the last mount time at something like the local time when it should be GMT or something. It's no show stooper but it is quite inconvenient to have to wait for a full root filesystem check each time you reinstall grub. Of course the main problem is XP breaking grub, but I don't file bug reports for propietary software, since the easy fix is to uninstall XP. -- Package-specific info: Boot method: CD Image version: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.3/i386/iso-cd/debian-503-i386-netinst.iso Date: Date and time of the install Machine: HP Compaq nc2400 Partitions: df -Tl will do; the raw partition table is preferred Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [O] Detect network card:[O] Configure network: [ ] Detect CD: [O] Load installer modules: [O] Detect hard drives: [O] Partition hard drives: [ ] Install base system:[ ] Clock/timezone setup: [ ] User/password setup:[ ] Install tasks: [ ] Install boot loader:[E] Overall install:[ ] Comments/Problems: This is no lenny install, just a grub reinstall from rescue. -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. Re: Bug#186029: Grouping questions in netcfg -- but which ones?
Sex, 2011-01-21 às 15:01 +0100, Samuel Thibault escreveu: Miguel Figueiredo, le Fri 21 Jan 2011 13:16:53 +, a écrit : Actually, I don't even understand why people prefer to see questions grouped. I personally prefer to type foo[ENTER]bar[ENTER], rather than having to tab between elements, or find out how things are supposed to be separated (by commas, whatever). If the default value doesn't need to changed it's two (or more) birds with one stone. Still, I find it more efficient to validate them one by one rather than validating two, then three, then two again, etc. I guess it also makes sense (i don't argue to everybody) that related questions be together around one subject so they don't seem 'random' but logically partitioned. That, however, I can understand (though I still don't put that in the best way to do things). And also could lead to fewer steps, even with the same amount to data to feed to the system. I was about to say well, pressing enter three times is no more tedious than just once, but then I realize that indeed I could like to e.g. be able to say yes, all the network stuff can remain the default, I don't care. One ground issue that remains is that questions depend on each other: for the locale for instance, the list of countries depends on the language, and the default keymap and timezone depends on the both country and language, so unless changing list selection on the fly in e.g. the graphical interface, you'll loose efficiency if you group them. Same for mirror selection: first the country, then the mirror list. The proxy question could be on the side, however. One grouping that I see could be done a hostname/domainname combination. I usually don't fill the domainname, so just filling the hostname and pressing enter is fine. Out of netcfg's scope... For the 1st user creation i don't see any harm on grouping Real name, login and password as this is all on the same subject. For instance, I don't even like (but I can live with) the graphical installer asking the dupped password on the same screen, it makes d-i testing a little bit more tedious :) I believe we also have a wishlist BR asking to when press enter to move to the next box :) Mmm, and then we'll have a wishlist BR that ctrl-enter validates it all... Funny way to switch from tab/enter to enter/ctrl-enter :) Samuel -- Melhores cumprimentos/Best regards, Miguel Figueiredo http://www.DebianPT.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. As I wrote in my previous message, we need to build a patched kernel to see whether it fixes the problem. However, I did not recognize that you cannot even boot the installer, so you are unable to build/test such kernel. One thing you can try is disable aty framebuffer to see whether it will allow you to boot the installer. After you see the installer welcome screen with the 'boot:' prompt, instead of simply pressing Enter, try entering 'install video=atyfb:off' (without quotes) and then press Enter. That should boot the kernel with framebuffer disabled. Best regards, -- Jurij Smakov ju...@wooyd.org Key: http://www.wooyd.org/pgpkey/ KeyID: C99E03CC

sparc errata for squeeze
Hello, Here are a couple of sparc-specific items which are unlikely to be resolved for r0, so please add them to errata: 1. niu network driver, required by newer T2+ sparc systems is not included in d-i, making it impossible to install on them using any method which relies on early network setup. Driver is included in kernel packages, so network is expected to operate normally after installation is completed. This is tracked in bug 608516, I hope to push the fix into r1. 2. Systems using aty graphics cards (for example, Ultra 10) may not boot the installer correctly, with kernel freezing early in the boot stage with last message console [tty0] enabled, bootconsole disabled. This is a kernel bug, for which a patch is available, however I only seen one report of it fixing the issue, and it's unlikely to be included into the kernels released in r0. The issue may be worked around by adding a kernel boot parameter 'video=atyfb:off' to turn off the framebuffer during boot, which allows the installer (and regular kernel) to be booted on such systems. This was reported in bug 609466, will try to build the patched kernel to verify that it fixes it, and push into r1. Also, I never did such work so I don't know exactly what needs to be synced on the website. I suspect that the online copy has to be updated in some way Frans was doing all such work in the past (including builds of G-I) and, IIRC, nothing has been re-setup to update online copies again. Nothing needs to be done on the website side: the last installation-guide package is extracted automatically from the archive. http://cvs.debian.org/webwml/cron/lessoften?view=markup I suspect that some work may be needed for CD images production, too. Bug#607480: The same error on Asus 1215N
Hi everyone! I now have a complete debian system on my Asus Eee PC 1215N. Here's what I did: 1) After creating the usb stick (from debian installer 6.0 rc 1), skipped the network detection part and installed a base system only; 2) After rebooting, I downloaded package build-essential, linux-headers-2.6.32-5-all and bzip2: apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-2.6.32-5-all bzip2 I had to reboot 2 or 3 times because the packages wouldn't get download on a single time because the network card would stop to get the packages and give an absurd number of packages received and transmitted (I saw this by doing a ifconfig eth0). After rebooting I tried again the same command until I got all the packages downloaded and installed; 3) I then downloaded the package compat-wireless from http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download and extracted to a folder tar -xjvf compat-wireless-2.6..tar.bz2 4) I then istalled the package as it is described on the README file cd compat-wireless* scripts/driver-select atl1c make make install (this step and the following as root) make unload make wlunload make btunload modprobe atl1c 5) The wired card Atheros AR8152 driver is now installed and works like a charm! I never had any more trouble with it; 6) I then updated the system (apt-get update; apt-get upgrade) and installed a list of packages I wanted (Xorg, GNOME, vlc, gcc, emacs, etc.). I used this site to install the packages I wanted for my netbook: http://www.vivaolinux.com.br/artigo/Debian-NetInstall-instalacao-personalizada/?pagina=4 It's in Portuguese but the script listed here has the package I wanted to install in my case; It was easy to choose what I wanted to install; 7) After the installation I had my system up and running! I just had to installed the wireless card driver (broadcom BCM4313) and for this I used the site http://wiki.debian.org/wl and followed the instructions listed on the header Squeeze. These instructions worked perfectly without any errors. 8) The sound card worked perfectly from scratch, I didn't had to do anything :) So, here it is. A simple step-through guide on how to install Debian on an Asus Eee PC 1215N. Thank you very much for all your support, you guys rock! I already tested the graphics card and watched some movies on Full-HD, its very nice, although the sound card is not the best that I've heard, but it does the job :) Best regards, Miguel Rentes -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Last I knew, zee was being used as a buildd for the prospective sparc64 port. http://buildd.debian-ports.org/fetch.php?pkg=scidver=1%3A4.2.2.cvs20110111-1arch=sparc64stamp=1294809847file=logas=raw suggests that's still true. Bug#609722: manual does say netinst should work
Hi Joachim, all, The installation manual: http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s03.html#usb-copy-flexible says explicitly that you can use a netinst image (in footnote 8 which is referenced when saying to get an ISO image at the bottom of section 4.3.2.2). And even if this were not documented, I think it is important that it works, as people will try it without reading the fine print. As chance would have it, I happen to have installed debian with a netinst off usb on my yeelong lemote last weekend. Though I didn't install a bootloader (it has PMON BIOS which can load the kernel without help), so I cannot confirm this bug myself. Questions will be collected with the INPUT command and asked alltogether when a GO is issued. netcfg should make use of this. Other frontends will ignore this for now, they will continue asking the questions in a row, so nothing breaks. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux coyote 2.4.20 #1 Thu Feb 13 18:48:44 CET 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=de_DE@euro, LC_CTYPE=de_DE@euro ---End Message--- ---BeginMessage--- It is the general opinion of d-boot that a lot of questions, whilst seeming groupable on the surface, actually aren't. Hence, I am closing this bug report. If you have any questions you think can be grouped, please reopen this report or (preferably) file a new bug with the details of exactly which questions you think can/should be grouped. - Matt ---End Message---

More investigation will be carried out into WTF is actually going on behind the scenes here. - Matt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
