If you succeed in your experiments, one thing you can do to help the

format of the installation manual, I think there might be somebody
here who would be willing to help you to get it into shape to
include as an appendix to the manual.

I may try to do this, although getting my new machine up and
running completely (installing old softare & files, etc) and
having a life are claiming my time.

One specific thing: the documentation for AMD64 recommends
/ have a size of 150-250MB. On my Toshiba desktop, this
resulted in warnings that I had used up available space as soon
as the machine was booted, even though I asked for 350MB. Perhaps
you might suggest to the installation guide authors that they check
this number.

I'm forwarding this to the debian-boot list. I know there has been
some discussion on that list about the appropriate sizes for root in a
"modern" installation. I suspect the recommendations in the install
guide go back quite a ways -- Sarge or even earlier...

Enjoy!

francophones..:-)

PS to others: Guy reports that his problem was solved by downloading
a new image but that D-I hanged later on at the "Choose and install
software" step. I'm asking to report this in another bug report and
preferrably do it in en (eventually en_FR but that's not a
problem..:-))

Nightly builds - EFI boot is broken, grub2 - the monitor out of sync

2012-11-12 Thread Vaclav Mocek

Hi Everybody,

I tried to install Wheezy, the nightly and weekly builds on a system
with UEFI bios yesterday and unfortunately it failed. Based on messages
I got it seems that the kernel in the UEFI image doesn't match the
additional kernel modules. When I used the latest Beta, it worked.

The second issue I had was that the grub2 set the LCD monitor out of
sync and there was no way to continue with the installation. At the end
I edited the ISO image in a binary editor and changed in
boot/grub/grub.cfg the line "set gfxmode=auto" to "set gfxmode=800x600"
and it worked. Fortunately, there are enough spaces in the original
grub.cfg file; you are clever guys ;-). The grub2 in the current Fedora
18 doesn't have such problems, so I suspect that some patches in the
mode setting code might be missing, just guessing.

Possibly. I've never been able to reproduce the issue myself, so
deferring to Integeri: #684293 is fixed in kernels > 3.2.29, was your
testing done on an earlier version than this and if so can you test
with a newer kernel?

In the meantime, I've canceled the nmu since it may not be needed.

Does tasksel have a way to select an alternate desktop task if the

In the past, it was often told on debian-boot, that such reports regarding
the stable installation-guide will probably not going to be fixed. This
may be because of lack of manpower - debian-boot is low on man power and
there are very few people caring about the installation-guide.
And IMHO: as we are now in freeze for the next debian release already, it's
even more unlikely someone cares about the 'old' installation-guide.
There is not enough manpower to maintain the actual installation-guide
(see the bugs in BTS regarding installation-guide for years), so why
working on the old one? Most probably not much people will ever notice ...

It would be glad if I were wrong.
We will see...

Holger

what makes you so sure about that? Why can this clear bug in the squeeze
installation-guide not be fixed there?

Kind regards
Philipp Kern

Automatically created root partition seems to be quite small

2012-11-12 Thread Andreas Tille
[Please CC me, I'm not subscribed]

Hi,

my son and me independently installed two boxes with the recent Wheezy
beta installer. Everything went smooth so far - thanks for your fine
work.

However, I might like to question the choice of the automatically
suggested size for the root partition (when always just pressing
). We both ended up with something that easily fills up for some
kind of "not very specific" installation. I do not have direct access
to his box but mine looks like

$ LANG=C df -h | grep rootfs
rootfs 331M 307M 7.5M 98% /

after installing the set of packages I used on the box before. IMHO
the dir

$ LANG=C du -hs /lib/modules
200M/lib/modules

is responsible for the problem because by doing simple

   apt-get dist-upgrade

you can end up with some kernel package installed in parallel and an
unexperienced user hardly will easily cope with the problem if its third
kernel package will not simply install any more.

Sorry if this was just reported, I'm not reading this list. If not I
can easily turn this into a bug report in case you agree that this is a
problem that should be dealt with.

Kind regards

   Andreas.

Bug#691346: mfi in 9.1

2012-11-12 Thread Mathieu Simon
G'day

Actually FreBSD 9.1 will contain update 'mfi' driver code which
largely expands the support for MegaRAID drivers. (confirmed witha
9.1-RC3 media)
It might be interesting for you to boo a native FreeBSD ISO of
this version to see if your controller is recognized by this mfi module.
(use "pciconf -lvb | grep mfi" and "mfiutil show adapter" to check)

I'm actually in a similar situation with another FreeBSD derived OS
(pfSense)
if you can go with a kernel based on 9.1, you'll likely be in a better
starting position.
