Bug#681681: installation-reports: grub-install doesn't install grub to all drives in RAID5 array during install

2012-07-15 Thread Gary Dale

Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
I recently rebuilt my former home server as a test desktop machine using
3 x 500G SATA drives I
had lying around. This required me to install a cheap PCI SATA
controller to get enough SATA ports

to handle the drives. The DVD writer is an IDE unit.

I'd heard that it was possible to boot from a RAID5 array and I wanted
to try that out. After
a couple of days of trying to get the system to boot after the install,
I realized the problem was
that GRUB wasn't installed on all the drives and the system was trying
to boot from a drive without

GRUB on it.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
Using the NetInst CD to boot into rescue mode allowed me open a shell in
the /dev/md/0

environment and grub-install to the other two drives.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
As expected, with grub installed on all three drives, I could boot into
a RAID5 array.

Comments/Problems:

I note that the installer doesn't give you the option to partition a
RAID array, even
though this is a legal and perfectly reasonable thing to do. Without
this capability
I have to set up the RAID array before starting the installer if I want
a partitioned

array.

New System:
Intel DP55KG Extreme Motherboard
Intel i5-750 Quad Processor (2.65 GHz)
4 GB 1333Mhz memory
e1000e internal NIC based on 82578DC Chip set

Comments/Problems:
I've downloaded the .iso image twice and burned it 3 times using two
different machines. I get the same problem each time. The boot CD is not
recognized and the machine tries to boot from the hard disk.

I booted the system from an Ubuntu 8,10 disk and just finished install
Etch+1/2 on it so there is nothing wrong with the machine.

The notes on the Etch+1/2 install indicate it's using the Lenny RC1
installer so I suspect it's not a problem with the installer either. It
may be the .iso image simply doesn't have the boot code on it.

Bug#485961: installation-reports: Installer can't locate CD-ROM drive (sparc)

2008-06-12 Thread Gary W. Smith
I don't know much about Sun hardware but Target 6 and Target e looks like your
SCSI channels are off. Correct me if I'm wrong (which is highly probable here)
but shouldn't the Target be either 0/1 for the primary boot device (i.e. the
hard disk). I know the older adaptec controllers wouldn't load the bios for
the raid controller of there wasn't a drive on 0/1 (but this was some time ago).

Thanks for all the info, but I'm afraid that my sparc knowledge is
insufficient here. Let's see if anyone on the debian-sparc list can help.

>From the logs I can see that the esp_scsi module does get loaded, but it
does not seem to detect anything at all. Either something is missing
(basic scsi drivers?), or the hardware is just not supported by this
driver. I've googled around a bit but that did not help either.

We sometimes advise to netboot sparc systems where the CD is not
recognized, but that won't help if the harddisk is on the same
bus/controller and needs the same driver.

Anyone any idea what could be missing or if this hardware is supported by
linux at all? Here's basic hardware info; the installation report [1] has
more extensive logs.

5-slot Sun Enterprise E3500, No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.2.24, 4096 MB memory installed, Serial #12336266.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:bc:3c:8a, Host ID: 80bc3c8a.

Target e
  Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST373405LC 22033EK1BBDY

Once we figure out what's needed, fixing the installer to support that is
probably trivial. The trick is in the first part.

Two things that may yet help:
- the output of lsmod after hardware detection (to see if anything obvious
  is not loaded)
- just manually trying to modprobe any driver under
/lib/modules/../kernel/drivers/scsi and checking dmesg after each for
  some sign of life

Cheers,
FJP

Special boot parameters

2007-08-02 Thread gary

When installing rev4, there is a section that reads roughly

Special boot parameters
You can use the following parameters

This list is incomplete, see the kernel's kernels-parameters.txt file.

Where is this file located?

Ultimately, I'd like to use the nforce4 software raid on my gigabyte
GA-k8n ultra-9. However, if that is not possible, I'd like to see what
raid controllers are supported.

Just as an FYI, I have Suse 10.2 installed and it recognizes the
software raid. Since both distributions are using the same kernel, I
would expect Debian to have the same feature.

Changing Installation/Bug report #426607

2007-06-05 Thread Gary L. Roach
I have been working with the Debian Etch Installer on a Toshiba qosmio G25
and had the system completely hang up on reboot. I filed the above report
about a week ago. I decided to do a total reinstallation last night. I had
a few minor glitches during installation but the system booted right up. I
don't know why the first time didn't work. Now I need to amend the report
and can't seem to figure out how. I don't want to make a complete nascence
of my self to some very busy people.

Any assistance would be appreciated. The report was forwarded to Frans Pop
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, if that is any help.

Installation hangs up during Retrieving bsdmaintils

2006-08-18 Thread Gary M. Kassander

I do not know if this is the proper forum for this concern
or not, but I'm going to report a problem.

During installation of Debian etch I ran into a problem.
I downloaded the ISO file from debian.org web site and burn a CD.  This
procedure went without a hitch.  I then inserted a CD in the computer I
want to use and powered on.  Everything went smoothly and as expected
until we came to the "Installing Base System".  Specifically,
the "retrieving bsdmaiandtils" of the "Installing Base System"
portion of the installation program.  At this point, with about 6% of the
file retrieved, the computer hung up.  The light on the CD-ROM was on
indicating the wrong was being access, but nothing else happened.  I
waited for over one and a half hours and still nothing happened there is no
change in the information displayed on the screen.  At that point I shut
the computer off and remove the CD.

I then went to the debian.org web site and downloaded a new
ISO file.  I burned this file to a CD and inserted it in the computer and
powered the computer on.  I had a repeat of my earlier experience.

Because I am new to Linux and Debian I am using an old
computer that I had sitting around gathering dust.  It is a day in 1998
IBM Aptiva E26.  It has an ADM K6-233 processor.

Debian seemed to detect a hard drive and all other hardware
without a problem.  It also identified the network and configure the
network without a problem.

If you have any suggestions on how to remedy this problem
complete the installation of Debian I would be more than happy to hear them.
I really would like to get Debian installed so that I can learn how to use it
properly.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance.

Gary Kassander

Preseed of Debian Archive mirror country and Disk Partition

2006-06-23 Thread Gary Fredrickson

Everyone,

Currently I am trying to fully automate an install of Debian and have to 2 issues
early in the install process and a question about aptitude.

The first issue below is with mirror country using ftp protocol. The
section of the preseed file is listed below in which I must press the enter key
for the mirror country to continue on in the installation. Any ideals?

# Debian archive mirror country:
d-i mirror/protocol select ftp
d-i mirror/country    select  enter
information manually
d-i mirror/ftp/hostname string actualhostname

d-i mirror/ftp/directory    string
/debian
d-i mirror/suite string stable
d-i mirror/ftp/proxy string

The second issue is really a two part question, one is how can I do logical
volumes in the preseed file? Also attached is the partition section of the
preseed file in which I must also press the enter key continue the install. The
message that appears is “No file system specified…. Go back to main
menu”. Currently I simple press the enter which selects No.

d-i partman-auto/disk string /dev/discs/disc0/disc

d-i partman-auto/expert_recipe  string root-swap-var-usr-tmp-keep ::
256 10 320 ext3 $primary{ } $bootable{ } method{ format } format{ }
use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ ext3 } mountpoint{ / } .  3000 9 3200
linux-swap method{ swap } format{ } .  5000 8 6000 reiserfs  method{
format } format{ } use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ reiserfs } mountpoint{ /var }
.  5000 8 6000 reiserfs method{ format } format{ } use_filesystem{ }
filesystem{ reiserfs } mountpoint{ /usr } . 1 8 11000 reiserfs method{
format } format{ } use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ reiserfs } mountpoint{ /tmp }
. 100 1 10 reiserfs method{ keep } .

# This makes partman automatically partition without confirmation.
d-i partman/confirm_write_new_label boolean true
d-i partman/choose_partition select Finish partitioning and write changes to
disk

The last question is in regards to aptitude? Is their anyway to preseed
the package selection?

Preseed File with Reiserfs

2006-06-14 Thread Gary Fredrickson

I am trying to setup a preseed file to partition / as 300 MB,
5GB /usr, 3 GB for /var, 10 GB for /tmp, 3 GB for swap and the remaining space
on the drive for /data all using reiserfs format. Searching the internet for how
to use expert_recipe and the field meanings yielded nothing. Any Ideals?

This is not a cd read/write problem. Multible cd's tested. The installer

Bug#239289: Install Problems

2004-10-20 Thread Gary

Hi,

I was going through the bug list for the installer
and came across this bug myself.  You asked the person having the problem
to try a newer version of the installer.  I personally have tried up to
10/18/04 version of the installer with the same results.  I have a Dell
Latitude C600 with the latest BIOS (A23).  It is a 750 MHz with 256M
RAM.  The CDROM is a Toshiba XM-1902A.  Although this is a i386 I am
experiencing the same problems as the Alpha.  The CD boots fine.
After answering the first few questions about which language etc. it stops when
trying to load the base system.  The screen goes blank (blue) and after a

Comments/Problems:

Overall, this was a VERY smooth install!
Because this was a installation intended to test the installer, the
target partition was an extra partition on an already running system.
Therefore, I was not able to test the installers ability to create and
use the NewWorld partition (previous installs had problems with this).
The network detection, which failed on previous installs, worked
flawlessly with this install.

The only problem I had was that the installer reconfigured yaboot
without asking me if I wanted to keep the configuration that I already
had. Although this is not a major problem, it would be nice if I had the
choice between keeping the existing configuration or installing a new
one. This would only be necessary if the installer detected an existing
yaboot installation. As such it would not have to interfere with the
"automatic" installation of yaboot for users installing for the first
time.

Thanks to the developers for a easy and powerful installer!!

Re: Bug#257988: Install report: PowerMac G4 Cube

2004-07-25 Thread Gary M. Witscher
I also did this same install with the same hardware and a current
(2000724) net-install iso image. Everything went smoothly except for two
areas:

1) Just like your install, the auto net config did not work. I too made
due with a manual static config. However, unlike you I was able to write
a /etc/network/interfaces that allowed me to use ifup to connect using
dhcp. Unlike your install I was not able to continue after the base
install as apt would not connect to any debian server I tried (in spite
of the fact that I could easily ping them all).

2) The partitioner went ahead an created a "NewWorld Bootblock" per my
selection. But installing yaboot failed, until I was able to manually
select the partition to install it on - an option that doesn't always
appear.

I'm still unable to use dselect, aptitude, or base-install to connect to
any debian server in order to continue this installation. I wonder if
you might have any suggestion that could turn this problem around?

TIA,
Gary

RE: [SOLVED] Take 3: sparc64 CDs work?

2004-06-16 Thread Gary Parker
Well, it certainly used to be the case on Ye Olde SPARCs (talking IPX and
+1's here) that the size of kernel and/or initrd you could boot from
depended on the size of the first two memory modules in the machine and it
was therefore essential to have the two largest modules at the beginning of
the memory map.

I have no idea if this is still the case on the SPARC64 architecture but it
would be my first guess as to why this fixed your problem.

Bug#252000: debian-installer installation report

2004-06-03 Thread Gary Whittaker
Package: installation-reports

In response to your earlier suggestions & questions:

- yes, I did try the linux26 option; same result: after the CD boots,
there's the choose language screen, the choose keyboard layout screen, then
the detect & mount CD loop begins. (this is with the "new" installer on
sarge-i386-netinst)

- I *have* installed woody from CD1 of the stable distro, so the old
installer seems to work with this CD-ROM drive

- searching through the output of dmesg after booting into woody shows hdc
as LTN4855 ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM DRIVE

- Martin wanted me to "check what kind of modules are loaded and maybe load
some more"; I'm not sure what you mean--the system doesn't install, so
there's no modules.conf or anything...

>> I think Martin was speaking about kernel modules.
>> To know what modules are loaded, issue the 'lsmod' command.
>>
>> If you find modules of which the name could be of significant interest
>> for you needs, issue the 'modprobe' command like in the following example
:

How would I issue these commands when the install crashes right in the
beginning? Are you talking about trying to make a custom boot CD?

Thanks, --Gary

I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean... What do you mean by "modules"
(could you give an example?); "loaded" where?;  how do I "load some more"?;
what would be examples of "some more"?

Thanks again for your assistance and patience, --Gary

Bug#252000: debian-installer installation report

2004-06-01 Thread Gary Whittaker
Thanks for getting back to me. I've already tried the linux26 option; it
had the same results. I have not had any luck with the CD drive in this
machine with linux (except for booting from it, as per original report)... I
haven't tried KNOPPIX; I probably won't take the time to download it unless
you tell me it's essential to the troubleshooting process. If so, I'll get
right to it.

I used the exact same CD (20040530 sarge-i386-netinst) to install to a
Gateway today, so there must be something about that IBM's drive. What
should I look for?

Can you boot with the linux26 option to see if kernel 2.6 finds the CD
drive. Can you try something like KNOPPIX and see if that works?
Have you been able to use the CD in that machine under Linux before?

I've tried it
several times using CD created from sarge-i386-netinst.iso.  I've
tried several builds, including the latest dated 20040530; the MD5SUM checked
out.  I've even tried sid, which I think also uses the Beta4
installer.  Same frustrating result each time.  Even though it boots
from the CD and initiates the install, it can't detect and mount the same
CD.

NOTE: I've used
this same method (CD install from sarge-i386-netinst) on another PC with
excellent results.  The other PC is also a P3 of similar vintage and
endowments, but is NOT an IBM NetVista, it's a clone.

The only problem that I encountered was that my wireless pcmcia card was
not detected automatically as it was in beta3. When I got to the network
detection part no network cards were found. I retried several times with
out any response. All I had to do is eject the wireless pcmcia card and
reinsert it, then run the detection routine again. The card was detected
and the remainder of the install went flawlessly.

Thanks for a great installer.

Hi Martin:

I'm not sure if you wanted a personal response to this, but here it is.
Both of these issues are resolved in beta4.

I will file a regular bug report as well - there is a new issue in
beta4.

Thanks for a great installer,
Gary

Comments/Problems:

This was a super installation, everything went very well. I was
surprised to see that my wireless network connection was detected as the
beta2 installer was not able to do that. The addition of a full
featured partition tool is a big plus - one that really sets this
installer apart from it's earlier versions. This is a great installer.

If I wanted to point out one weakness in the installation process it
would have to be the difficulty that multilevel multisection dialogs
present to the user. One example of this is the partitioning dialogs.
Many of these dialogs have three input sections - one to bring up a
secondary dialog - one to display an action menu - and one at the
bottom to display action 'buttons'. At first I was confused by this,
but even after figuring it out I was still uncomfortable with it.
Perhaps, from a ui standpoint, each of these dialogs should be encased
in their own line boxes. This would at least visually separate them,
which would reinforce that they are separate inputs that perform
separate actions.

Thanks goes to all who have seen this project through and will continue
to improve on this solid foundation!

Comments/Problems:

I installed twice, and after the base install the system rebooted. The
reboot failed both times. The last message in the boot sequence was
similar to 'Detected two usb ports'. My machine only has one usb port.
At any rate I simply turned off the machine and booted, this boot
completed and the installation process continued.

I already have a running system and was disappointed by the lack of
consideration for those of us who do have running systems when it came
time to install the boot loader. I have no problem with lilo (although I
don't use it), but I didn't want or need to install ANY boot loader and
saw no option for avoiding the lilo installation (I even erased the
input dialog completely and it still installed).

Boot problem

2003-02-10 Thread McAllister, Gary

Once I setup and
install the system using the compact install option linux fails to
boot.

I am installing on
an old compaq proliant 2500 server.

I think its due to
the fact LILO is not installed in the MBR but have not yet found a decent site
to explain how to go about this.

I have managed to
get it to stick at a flashing underscore after running the first
disk.

Any help is much
appreciated.

woody install problems

2002-09-29 Thread Gary Seven

I'm having a really tough time installing woody on a tyan tiger mp or
mpx. No matter what what I do the install either:
- detects no hard drives at all
- finds the drives, but hangs during file system initialization
- gets to the point of writing files onto the file system, then hangs
part way thru.

Oddly enough, I've had this same mother board, drives, drive
controllers, etc running RH7.1; but now, neither RH7.3 or woody will
install on the system (can't find the rh7.1 discs to re-try it).

Win2K installs and runs just fine. Which sorta indicates that the
hardware is fine.

I've also tried different drive controllers. The system was originally
running with two cd writers on the MB's primary and secondary ide
channels and the drives on a 3ware ide raid card. However, I suspect
that the file system performance was really poor and I want something to
compare to; so I wanted to remove the ide raid card and test the file
system with the one hard drive and cd writer on the MB's ide.

For the installs with the pci ide cards I did use bf2.4.

I've even changed MB's. The orginal MB was a tyan tiger MP purcahsed a
year ago, second was a tiger MPX purchased recently. Am using DDR ECC
memory.

I've tried installing RH7.3 and woody under the following conditions,
and both fail at one of the previously mentioned points:
- hard drive on MB's primary ide, cd writer on MB's secondary ide
- hard drives on promside pci ide controller (no raid)
- hard drives on 3ware pci ide raid card, configured JBOD
cd writes on MB's primary and secondary ide

I've searched the mailing list archives high and low looking for
problems that matched mine; but the only thing I've found was a post
saying to use bf2.4 and one pointing to some other files to use:

Peter, Try this one
http://people.debian.org/~blade/boot-floppies/cvs/boot-bf2.4-with-basedebs.iso

This works for me on every think I have tried it in.

Can't figure out what to do with this one: doesn't boot and neither do
any of the images on it.

Wont work with this crap without additional modules. See
http://www.debian.org/~blade/install/preload/
.

This didn't help either; but it doesn't seem like I should need it if
the hard drive is just on the MB's ide.

help

2002-05-20 Thread GARY P LARGESS

I have 3 CD's from Penguin Power to
install Debian 2.2.

I wish to install Debian on an older
machine to get the feel of it before I install it on a machine I am currently
building. This is a "project" computer, so I have no partition issues, Debian
can erase the HDD.

The older machine is a P133, 3G HDD,
40 M RAM, which I have successfully installed Red Hat & Corel
Linux.

This machine will not boot from CD.
I have managed to make the first installation floppy disk.

When I turn the machine on the
"Welcome to Debian" screen appears, and instructs me to press
'enter'.

Loading
Linux.
Uncompressing
Linux..
Then a bunch of information about
the machine.

Then "VFS: Insert root floppy disk
to be loaded into RAM disk and press ENTER"

This is where I'm
stuck.
I have not been able to figure out
how to make the root FD. And believe me I have spent many many many hours trying
to figure it out on the Debian main page. This is my last hope before giving up,
and using RH.

Can you tell me how to make a
root FD, that is appropriate for this machine and kernel-
image-2.2.17_2.2.17pre6-1? And if I need another floppy after the root... please
tell me how to make that also.

Or how to force the machine to boot
from CD, or how to install Debain... after booting in RH... or any other method
that would allow me to install Debian on this machine.

It's been a long time since I've heard from this list. Is this
pertaining to Debian-BSD still?

I'm really not surprised. I had CheapBytes RH and had all sorts of
problems with the CDs. It was these problems that convinced me that I
needed to get some new Linux CDs, from there it was a small matter to
decide to move everything to Debian (rather than just have it on my
laptop). CheapBytes have guaranteed no repeat business from this
quarter.
