Bug#637284: Can't install wheezy on a 2011 iMac

2011-08-10 Thread Mike Hore

On 10/08/11 6:55 PM, Gergely Nagy wrote:

reassign 637284 installation-reports
thanks

Installation reports (failure or success) should not be reported against
the Work Needing and Prospective Packages virtual package, but against
installation-reports.

Ah, thanks Gergely -- I'm still new to this :-)

-- Mike.

It can then be reassigned from there to the appropriate package, if
confirmed.

I have reassigned the report to installation-reports, so it gets
forwarded to the right place.

Re: D-I RC2 images available for testing

2007-03-14 Thread Mike Hore

Hi Frans,

(BCC to d-ports)

For all architectures, except for m68k, installer and CD/DVD images of
what is going to be D-I RC2 are now available for testing. RC2 is
scheduled to be the D-I release shipped with Etch.

Netboot, floppy and hd-media images are available from:
http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/main/installer-arch/rc2/images/

CD/DVD images are available from:
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

The netinstall image fails to install on my iMac G5. Everything works
till the installing software stage, where even with a very basic
installation choice (just desktop, no frills) and trying 2 different
mirrors, it gets to file 59 out of more than 600. Then all CD and
network activity stops, and there's no further progress.

I'll file an installation report.

Cheers, Mike.

We already have some test results for i386, amd64, arm, hppa, ia64 and
s390. Tests for ia64 and s390 have shown minor issues that are being
worked on.

Please test these images for your architecture(s) and file an
installation report [1] with the test results.

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#414880: D-I RC2 netinstall image fails to install on iMac G5

Desktop is not really basic, it's about the most complex installation
you can get :-)

It still looks like a mirror problem to me. Trying again now may have
solved it.

OK, I'll check again when I get time.

Anyway, when the system stops responding, please try switching to VT4 (on
PCs this is alt-F4, for Macs probably option-F4 or similar) and check the
log there for any strange messages.

OK, will do. (On my keyboard, option is also labelled alt so it's the
same key.)

If you don't see anything there, try switching to VT2 and check the output
of 'dmesg' and the contents of /var/log/syslog using the editor nano
(anything related to the problem should be near the end).

If possible, send us the syslog (gzipped!).

That'll be a bit hard since at that point I'm not installed so I have to
switch back to OSX to access email. There's probably a way, but I don't
know enough Linux yet...

You can also check what processes are running using the 'ps' command. The
last 6 or so should include the ones causing the problem.

OK, thanks.

Cheers, Mike.

Cheers,
FJP

Yes, it did! This time, the installation went through flawlessly, using
the same mirror as last night. So I guess this isn't a real bug, and
can be closed.

Bug#413788: Daily Etch build fails to install on iMac G5 - Ethernet not detected

Hi Holger and others,

Hi,

So it really looks to me like it isn't there, sorry!

have you checked the md5sum against the one for the day your image is
dated? (you can find older dailies by cutting back the image url to remove
the current and everything before it and browsing manually from there)

i'm thinking this may be another case of a half and half download (half one
days image half the next)

I think so too. I also downloaded the (ppc)-netinst on the 7th and just tried
to load the sungem module from it, and it worked. So...

I had some aborted downloads, but that time I switched to an ftp client
and did it that way -- also OSX mounted the .iso file which I doubt
would have happened if it was half-and-half -- but no, I didn't check
the MD5. I probably should just try again with a later build, but the
server is so slow it takes me all night to download, and at the moment
I'm trying a Gentoo install, so I'll leave it for a while.

Cheers, Mike.

Bug#413788: Daily Etch build fails to install on iMac G5 - Ethernet not detected

2007-03-09 Thread Mike Hore

Hi all,

I downloaded the March 9 daily build, (the server was reasonably fast
this time), and it all works! The sungem driver is definitely present.

So whatever happened before, it's OK now, so this bug can be closed.

(I'm still investigating Gentoo, but if I get into too much strife, I'll
come back to Debian.)

Cheers, Mike.

Bug#413788: Daily Etch build fails to install on iMac G5 - Ethernet not detected

According to this information, your NIC needs the sungem driver, which
_is_ included in the installer and should be loaded automatically.

After the installer has failed to detect your NIC, please try the
following:

- switch to VT2
- check if the sungem module is loaded ('lsmod | grep sungem')

No output.

- if it is, check dmesg for any messages about the NIC

I didn't see any, but there were about 2 screenfuls of info and I didn't
know how to stop it scrolling off.

- if it is not, try to load it manually ('modprobe sungem')

FATAL: module sungem not found

So it really looks to me like it isn't there, sorry!

Cheers, Mike.

Bug#413788: Daily Etch build fails to install on iMac G5 - Ethernet not detected

After network detection failed, please switch to VT2 (on a PC this is
alt-F2; I guess option-F2 or something similar on Macs) and enter the
following command:

   lspci -nn | grep Ethernet
We need the PCI Id of that device, which looks like [:].

0001:03:0f.0 Ethernet controller: Apple Computer Inc. Shasta (Sun GEM)
[106b:0051]

Since this is a netinstall and the network can't be initialized, I
couldn't proceed beyond this point.

This is not true. Netinst CDs contain the full base system, so you can
complete an installation without a network card. You would end up with a
fairly minimal, but completely functioning system.

OK, I guess that's right, if you know what you're doing, but with the
little Linux I know I'm basically stuck.

Now I probably should have mentioned that BEFORE the Ethernet detection
attempt, I got another message to say that some kernel modules could not
be found, and should I proceed without them, and the installation might
fail if I proceeded. I assumed this was because I was attempting a
netinstall, but for all I know that assumption might have been wrong.

Cheers, Mike.
