How about b to back up? It would be either that or b for previous
page IMHO.

That's fine with me, I just committed the former.
Thanks.

Or to be consistent also n to go to the next page or alike... fwiw, I
think the important change was q to quit select.

Throughly something like:
Press q to quit the selection menu
Press b to go back one page in the current selection menu
Press n to go to the next page in the current selection menu

But all this can be left for an extended help option or a manual... unless
of course it's clear that enough people are still confused.

This could almost be a wishlist item, re-prioritize if desired. I hope you
don't feel this is too much of a nitpicking issue.

q to end, b for begin I feel is ambiguous and may mislead people.
E.g.'s, someone wants to go to the end of the list hitting q, someone
finished selecting wanting to begin the action on their selected
 items...
[...]

I carefully read this thread, but of course cannot make everyone happy.
Here is what I just implemented in cdebconf text frontend:
  * 'b' key now acts as with more/less/lynx, it goes back
  * Prompt is:
q to quit select, b for back, n for next page

This is a bit long, but I believe that this is not an issue because
irrelevant options are not displayed, thus the full list will only
be printed in the middle of the list.
