Bug#252000: debian-installer installation report
Package: installation-reports In response to your earlier suggestions questions: - yes, I did try the linux26 option; same result: after the CD boots, there's the choose language screen, the choose keyboard layout screen, then the detect mount CD loop begins. (this is with the new installer on sarge-i386-netinst) - I *have* installed woody from CD1 of the stable distro, so the old installer seems to work with this CD-ROM drive - searching through the output of dmesg after booting into woody shows hdc as LTN4855 ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM DRIVE - Martin wanted me to check what kind of modules are loaded and maybe load some more; I'm not sure what you mean--the system doesn't install, so there's no modules.conf or anything... I think Martin was speaking about kernel modules. To know what modules are loaded, issue the 'lsmod' command. If you find modules of which the name could be of significant interest for you needs, issue the 'modprobe' command like in the following example : How would I issue these commands when the install crashes right in the beginning? Are you talking about trying to make a custom boot CD? Thanks, --Gary -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#252000: debian-installer installation report
Thanks for getting back to me. I've already tried the linux26 option; it had the same results. I have not had any luck with the CD drive in this machine with linux (except for booting from it, as per original report)... I haven't tried KNOPPIX; I probably won't take the time to download it unless you tell me it's essential to the troubleshooting process. If so, I'll get right to it. I used the exact same CD (20040530 sarge-i386-netinst) to install to a Gateway today, so there must be something about that IBM's drive. What should I look for? --Gary Wittaker -Original Message- From: Martin Michlmayr [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 31, 2004 10:28 PM To: Gary Whittaker; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#252000: debian-installer installation report * Gary Whittaker [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2004-05-31 21:40]: Initiated install from CD; get choose language screen (picked American English); got choose country screen (picked US); then proceeds to load modules to search for CD drive; get message Failed to find and mount a Debian CD-ROM, Do you want to try again ; when I choose Yes, it just tries again with the same results Can you boot with the linux26 option to see if kernel 2.6 finds the CD drive. Can you try something like KNOPPIX and see if that works? I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean... What do you mean by modules (could you give an example?); loaded where?; how do I load some more?; what would be examples of some more? Gary Whittaker wrote: I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean... What do you mean by modules (could you give an example?); loaded where?; how do I load some more?; what would be examples of some more? I think Martin was speaking about kernel modules. To know what modules are loaded, issue the 'lsmod' command. Modules are additional drivers that can be dynamically loaded into the kernel, for additionnal functionnality and/or hardware support. They can be found by categories into /lib/modules/YOUR_KERNEL_VERSION/kernel/CATEGORIES (just replace YOUR_KERNEL_VERSION and CATEGORIES by the good values). If you find modules of which the name could be of significant interest for you needs, issue the 'modprobe' command like in the following example : - I have Intel Pro 100 NIC, and driver is a module called e100.ko. - I issue 'modprobe e100' - Messages are saying if it works or fail. - 'lsmod' shows that e100 module is loaded and used. - ifconfig is showing eth0 ;) In your case, i think you show first submit here the modules loaded you have, we will go step by step ;) Thanks again for your assistance and patience, --Gary That's the way Free Software goes forward Regards, Jerome -Original Message- From: Martin Michlmayr [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 01, 2004 8:47 PM To: Gary Whittaker Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#252000: debian-installer installation report * Gary Whittaker [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2004-06-01 19:41]: I used the exact same CD (20040530 sarge-i386-netinst) to install to a Gateway today, so there must be something about that IBM's drive. I've tried several builds, including the latest dated 20040530; the MD5SUM checked out. I've even tried sid, which I think also uses the Beta4 installer. Same frustrating result each time. Even though it boots from the CD and initiates the install, it can't detect and mount the same CD. NOTE: I've used this same method (CD install from sarge-i386-netinst) on another PC with excellent results. The other PC is also a P3 of similar vintage and endowments, but is NOT an IBM NetVista, it's a clone.

Some laptops have IEEE1394 interfaces which are to be supported very soon...because I happen to have one and brought it to Debconf. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
