Bug#387767: Installation Failure
On Saturday 16 September 2006 18:06, Keith Parkansky wrote: Comments/Problems: Encountered same kernel panic (not syncing) during installation using both i386 CD#1 and NETINST CD on two separate (but same hardware) systems. Is the system frozen after the error or can you still for example switch to VT2? What are the full messages on the screen? We really need more info to have any chance of reassigning this to the kernel. Also tried install setting framebuffers=false at the boot prompt but still encountered panic. That is unlikely to have any effect in this case. Better candidates for working around the problem are booting with: acpi=off noapic nolapic or combinations of those. Progress bar window with Detecting hardware to find CD-ROMs appears and completes to end and then window disappears leaving a blue screen. So the modules are loaded correctly but the panic seems to happen when the CD is accessed. Can you try to run the installation in expert mode so we can see at exactly which step the failure occurs. We can try more debugging once we know this. Another thing to try in expert mode is to load only those modules relevant for your hardware in the Detecting hardware to find CD-ROMs step. If you can, try with a different cdrom drive. Cheers, FJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#387767: Installation Failure
Let me preface my information below by saying that while I was trying different things, I found that if I don't set the framebuffer to false, I never see the kernel panic. The system locks up tight with a gray bar (row) at the bottom of a blue screen. If I do set the frame buffer to false, I can switch consoles when the system appears to hang (black row at the bottom of a blue screen) before I get the kernel panic message. I booted the CD using the following at the boot prompt: expert noapci nolapci apcpi=off I choose language, country, en_US.UTF-8, no additional locales, PC-style keyboard, and American English keymap. I then get the Detect and mount CD-ROM, the next screen shows 28 kernel modules that were detected, then the Detecting hardware... progress bar completes and a window pops up asking Start PC Card services?. I tab to 'No' and hit Enter. At this point the machine locks up. I can't switch to another console. I don't get a kernel panic this time. The system just totally locks up. I tried both CD#1 and the NETINST CD and got the same results with both. On the 28 kernel modules that were detected, there was floppy, USB, isofs, and the rest all have to do with IDE. They are: via82cxxx trm290 triflex sic90e66 sis5513 ssimage serverworks sc1200 rz1000 pdc202xx_old pdc202xx_new opti621 ns87415 it821x npt34x cy82c693 cs5535 cs5530 cs5520 cmd64x atiixp amd74xx alim15x3 aec62xx ide-generic I tried de-selecting all modules except ide-generic and isofs and still got the lockup/kernel panic. I don't know which module would be appropriate for the Intel AL440LX mobo. I will supply most of the text of the kernel panic message tomorrow. It's very late here and I need to get some sleep before work tomorrow. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Also tried install setting framebuffers=false at the boot prompt but still encountered panic. Here is what happens: System boots off CDs to Debian screen with boot prompt. Selected language OK (English). Selected country OK (US). Selection keymap OK (American English). Progress bar window with Detecting hardware to find CD-ROMs appears and completes to end and then window disappears leaving a blue screen. There is a few seconds of hard-drive activity and then the CD-ROM drive spins up for a few seconds as if something is being read and then it stops. At the bottom of the blue screen is a row of black with the white cursor flashing at the bottom-left of the screen. The system sits there for 30 to 60 seconds and then a bunch of stuff appears on the screen with the last few lines saying there was a kernel panic - not syncing - fatal exception in interrupt. Note that both Woody and Sarge installed and ran great on both of the systems I got the kernel panics on so it is not a hardware failure type of problem. Sarge is still installed and running on one of them so if you want me to run any Sarge commands to collect any system info I can do so. Note also that I did not set DHCP to false at the boot prompt even though I do not have a DHCP server. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
