If I have set eth0 as the device to be monitored, and if there is no eth0 when netspeed is started up, netspeed shows a disconnected eth0. When either eth0 or wlan0 is brought up, it switches over to that device. It may be desirable to be able to set "non-lo and non-dummy" while only "lo" and "dummy0" are up, though. Uli

A slightly longer description of the problem as seen on http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2005/05/msg00077.html This has been brought up and answered several times a week for the past few months. Its an unfortunate system but here is the situation: 1. There are some bits of code from upstream that can't be included in main, and thus kernel-image packages, because of licencing concerns. In a nutshell they aren't considered DFSG free. 2. These have been moved into the nonfree package mentioned earlier in the thread. This will be uploaded to debian. However, there are some concernes about the distibutability of some of the drivers in the package, and until that is all cleaned up it can't be uploaded. http://www.acm.cs.rpi.edu/~dilinger/kernel-source-nonfree-2.6.11/ 3. In the mean time anyone who needs those drivers has to tediously search the internet and find a message like this one linking to the URL, or use the Kernel.Org kernel. Clearly this sux and I sympathise with complaints about it, even though I am a member of the team that has created this mess. -- Horms -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I have no idea where this might come from. I uploaded 1.64 some days ago and I can find text with umlauts in it. The other problem you described (that double clicking on the word does only mark the bit with the umlaut) is still there though. True, there was some late minute package shiffling which meant that -16 ended up going straight into sarge. Unfortunately now we have this bug. A similar thing seems to have happened with 2.4.27 and some neftilter symbols. It partly my fault (in the sense that I uploaded the packages) and partly a process issue. I do appologise for any inconvenience and I'll try and get updates together over the next few days. But we have clearly missed the boat for 3.1r0. -- Horms -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Oh, please, I am not kidding you, and I talk about HTTP (contents and headers). I know it sends the correct content data, but it sends crappy headers which works with some HTTP clients and with some it does not - and this unfortunatelly happens with curl. It's even worse, curl runs amok after seeing this and corrupts the retrieved data. > I've checked apt from outside and everything is OK. That is because the apt's "http" tool does tollerate bad stuff. Do a curl -D foo http://ftp.task.gda.pl and look at the foo contents. There is no length specification. WTF? Do a curl -D foo http://ftp.task.gda.pl/debian/dists/sarge/contrib/binary-i386/Packages.gz > /dev/nul and look at foo (with an editor that does not hide non-printable chars). You cannot tell me that the binary junk around the word zip is "correct". Nor do the content specification make much sense. Bug#302658: workaround for failure to obtain lease
Hi, I got bitten by this as well. My take on the problem is that if you have the resolvconf package installed, the script /etc/udhcpc/default.deconfig (called upon invocation by udhcpc) instead of running ifconfig runs resolvconf, which does not put the network device in the state required for udhcpc to work, resulting in bind() and such things returning ENETDOWN. The solution is to either apply the attached patch, which simply makes sure ifconfig brings up the device regardless of whether you have resolvconf installed, or not use the resolvconf package. This and the companion bug (#302655) are two months old, and should be attended to. -K --- default.deconfig 2005-04-01 16:05:50.0 -0500 +++ default.deconfig.new 2005-06-07 07:45:51.877221416 -0400 @@ -3,6 +3,5 @@ if [ -x /sbin/resolvconf ] ; then resolvconf -d "${interface}.udhcpc" -else - /sbin/ifconfig $interface 0.0.0.0 fi +/sbin/ifconfig $interface 0.0.0.0 pgpjr7kt1NtEr.pgp Description: PGP signature

That is because the apt's "http" tool does tollerate bad stuff. Do a curl -D foo http://ftp.task.gda.pl and look at the foo contents. There is no length specification. WTF? please show witch server gives length specification for a directory index. Do a curl -D foo http://ftp.task.gda.pl/debian/dists/sarge/contrib/binary-i386/Packages.gz > /dev/nul and look at foo (with an editor that does not hide non-printable chars). Please install a proper http daemon (webfs, boa, or even apache*) or fix thttpd. this was the problem. I've installed cerrect version of thttpd and it's looks well. thaks for hints. Well, anyone who has a partial 3.3/3.4 system is asking for trouble and probably only has it because they missed some packages that needed upgrading. So I would say the conflict would be useful for a larger group of people (those who forgot to upgrade some packages vs. those who really want a hybrid 3.3/3.4). That's just my opinion, I'll leave it up to you to make the call Thanks Chris

Bug#312322: apt-cacher: would be useful to independantly control expiry time of Packages files
Package: apt-cacher Version: 0.8.6 Severity: wishlist It would be useful if apt-cacher could be taught that security.debian.org updates 'asynchronously' to other mirrors. Either by setting a lower expiry threshold or simply by not caching the packages list at all (.deb files would still be cached). The reason is that apt-cacher uses an 8 hour timeout by default, this means that any security updates which are released do not show up until this timeout has expired and the new list is downloaded. I can work around the problem by: - manually deleting the cached lists from the apt-cacher server (ick!) - using a sources.list which bypasses the cache. This is a pain for large security updates on multiple machines since the .deb is not cached. - turning down the global expire value. This is non-optimal for all the non-security sources which only update once per day or so. But I think it would be nice it apt-cacher could handle the situation itself. Bug#312324: galeon: Problems with printing off NewsForge articles
Package: galeon Version: 1.3.20-1 Severity: normal Situation: Just updated from woody to sarge, per methods in release notes. Before upgrading, printing off NewsForge articles made Galeon unstable: it tended to crash on attempting to close tabs (and on some other actions), but only if the page printed off contained the comments. I don't know *what* such a page contains, but it's poison to Galeon. I'd tentatively put this down to my use of fvwm rather than Gnome. In order to configure the web proxy, I added gnome-core and dependents, plus gconf-editor, and was busy rejoicing that Galeon now works properly under fvwm (and in particular is much faster than Firefox on my K6/2 system) when --- The (mis)behaviour of Galeon is different now: after printing off a Newsforge article with comments, attempts to print off any other page tend to yield a "You cannot print while in print preview" warning box instead. The breaking of printing persists until I crash and restart kill the daemon launched with "galeon -s". Please don't hesitate to contact me for further details. Bug#312328: xxdiff: 'copy file' in recursive diff copies to wrong directory
Package: xxdiff Version: 1:3.1-3 Severity: normal To recreate, create two directory structures: /tmp/a/ /tmp/a/b/ /tmp/a/b/c /tmp/a/b/d /tmp/a2/ /tmp/a2/b/ /tmp/a2/b/d The 'd' files are identical, but it doesn't matter exactly what the contents are. Invoke xxdiff: xxdiff -r /tmp/a /tmp/a2 xxdiff correctly shows b/c in green, and doesn't highlight the 'd' files because they are identical. However, if one right-clicks on b/c, and selects 'Copy left file to right', nothing seems to happen. Then quit xxdiff and re-start it with the same command. It is obvious (and this is backed up by looking at the contents of the filesystem), that c has been copied to /tmp/a2/. I'm not sure if this is the intended behaviour, but it's obviously not particularly useful if the directory structure in question is complex! I think there are two problems here: 1. xxdiff should copy files to the correct subdirectory. 2. It should update the file listings straight away to show that change, as it would if you were merging files (again, a look at the filesystem shows the file is copied instantly). Hope this helps. Thanks for packaging xxdiff - it's invaluable to me day-by-day! Bug#312338: FTBFS on hurd-i386: test suite failures
Package: coreutils Severity: important Version: 5.2.1-2 Hi, The coreutils test suite has a couple of well-known and more-or-less expected failures on GNU/Hurd. Most notably, the 'uptime' utility is not ported (as the Hurd itself ships one as well) and 'nice' is confused by what the Mach kernel reports back, making the test suite fail. People are working on those issues, but they are not of high priority. However, not having an up-to-date coreutils is more and more a major issue for the Debian GNU/Hurd port, as this means debootstrap fails, mostly blocking all efforts towards a native Debian GNU/Hurd installer. For the last year or so when coreutils was frozen for sarge, we routed around this issue by providing a modified coreutils binary package in a semi-official repository and by having other means than debootstrap to install Debian GNU/Hurd. However, sarge is now out and efforts towards porting d-i to hurd-i386 are underway, so this issue should be fixed ASAP. Therefore, I propose to not run the test suite on hurd-i386 for the time being, until the issues are sorted out. One way of achieving this would be to apply the patch in #278915. Another would be to simply add a check like ifneq ($(DEB_BUILD_GNU_SYSTEM),gnu) cd $(BUILD_TREE) && $(MAKE) check endif in build-stamp. thanks, Michael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#312335: PS/2 mouse not properly recognized on MSI KT4V mainboard
Package: kernel-image version: 2.6.8-2-k7 1) congratulations on the 3.1 release! I've been running Sarge on a number of machines and I love it! 2) This issue is one I should have reported some time ago. Sorry. It seems to affect the 2.6.7 and 2.6.8 kernels but not the earlier or later ones. I'm running a system with an MSI KT4V mainboard using an IOgear MiniView KVM switch. The KT4V seems to have a problem with the MiniView in that it will produce a keyboard error when I boot (except sometimes from a cold start) if I have that system selected - but not if I am watching a different system (go figure). This is generic to the KT4V because I have another KT4V-based system with the same problem, but other systems with different mainboards don't have this problem. This information is provided as background - I know there are issues with this KVM / Mainboard combination. The problem I'm having with the 2.6.8 kernel however is that when I boot the system with the KVM attached to the PS/2 mouse port, the mouse does not respond properly once X starts. It reacts to mouse movements in a random fashion. However, if I boot with a mouse attached directly to the PS/2 port, then switch to the KVM afterwards, the mouse behaves properly. I had also tried a number of workarounds including changing mouse parameters in X and adding a mouse parameter in Grub. The latter worked with the 2.6.7 kernel but not the 2.6.8 one. In the end, I had to go to Sid to get a newer kernel. This problem disappeared in the 2.6.9 kernel and is still absent in the 2.6.11 one which I am currently using (my only deviation from Sarge). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#312336: Please remove zip-crypt and unzip-crypt
Package: ftp.debian.org Packages zip-crypt and unzip-crypt are dummy packages which depend on zip and unzip respectively (which have encryption support). They have been in woody to support upgrades from potato, and they are also in sarge to support direct upgrades from potato which skip woody. That was exactly my intent. Now that sarge has been released, I would like to see them removed from testing and unstable. Thanks. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Could you please remove these files from the site. By the way, how to upload (i.e. a use dupload) changes? I use dupload as : # dupload -to anonymous-ftp-master (I use /etc/dupload.conf, which is not modified.) Bug#302658: workaround for failure to obtain lease

Thanks for the quick follow-up. Seems to work fine here, however the former ifconfig stanza is upstream, maybe they should use 'ifconfig $interface up' as well for their sample scripts, as it is indeed cleaner. -K pgpHOF3Oivt4n.pgp Description: PGP signature
