Bug#332218: gnome-gpg: unable to start

2005-10-04 Thread Damyan Ivanov
Package: gnome-gpg
Version: 0.3.0-3
Severity: important

Hi,

Today I decided to try gnome-gpg. I started it up and it asks me to
enter the password for GPG.

No mater if I choose Anonymous mode or authenticated mode, gnome-gpg
shows a message "GPG terminated abnormally" and terminates.

If I start it from gnome-terminal, when I choose OK on the login dialog,
the wollowing appears in the terminal:
gpg: Go ahead and type your message ...

At this moment the dialog is non-responsive and it seems gpg is waiting
for me to enter something on the terminal, because if I press Ctrl-D, it
continues:
  gpg: processing message failed: eof

At which point the "gpg exited abnormally" dialog appears and the same
appears on the terminal.

To me this seems like some kinf of problem of communication between
gnome-gpg and gpg. I am not an expert, though. If I can provide more
information, please ask.

Thanks for maintaining gnome-gpg,
dam

Bug#331468: gnumed-client: Debconf templates do not follow Developer's Reference recommendations

2005-10-04 Thread Andreas Tille

On Mon, 3 Oct 2005, Christian Perrier wrote:

This bug report template is mostly generic so I can't point out
exactly which part of your debconf templates I have considered not
following these recommendations. I recommend your first read the
mentioned part of the DR, make the changes you feell needed, then come
back to me with the new templates file.

I tried to enhance some points of the templates and closed the bug with
an upload which was necessary to do anyway. If you are not yet happy with
the changes I did feel free to reopen the bug again. It would be nice if
you could be a little bit more verbose then because it is a little bit hard
to find the problem if you are not busy editing templates all the day. ;-)

Thanks for caring for reasonable debconf templates

Bug#332217: finger-ldap: "bad hostname: ldaps://foo"

Severity: normal

hi,

the DNS resolves for all TCP-based hosts, and the 'bad service' i got
when all the hosts (mentioned in the 'uri' statement in
libnss-ldap.conf) were commented out. it seem to puke on line 171 or
172, after it hits the 'next;' function in that sub() (this is from the
debian-ditributed script, no local mods have been done on it).

it must be said that i use 'port 636' and 'uri ldapi:/// ' in my conf.

Hello,

kismet is uninstallable in sid because libmagick6 isn't available anymore.
libmagick9 is in unstable so changing build-deb to libmagick9-dev and rebuilding
should fix this bug.

Ah! Well.. the -S switch is pretty special-purpose (it also waits, for
example), and so not only puts PRIMARY somewhere else.

However, the opposite is not that important, as you can just select the
cut buffer and it becomes the primary selection (the selection is just
that - some selection somewere, while a cut buffer actually stores data in
the x-server), or you can use xcb|xclip or vice versa.

Its very handy, although I have no idea how well it is i18nized...
(probably not very well, but neither is xcb).

Bug#290922: Status of wxmaxima

2005-10-04 Thread Marco Presi

Hi,

I am also interested to push wxmaxima into Debian archive.

I have prepared an updated package (last version, built against
libwxgtk2.6), here:

deb http://people.debian.org/~zufus/ wxmaxima/
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~zufus/ wxmaxima/

If you are still interested, please let me know, and in case, we
can co-maintain this package (otherwise I would like
to take this package).

Package: horde3

In horde2 there was a symlink /usr/share/horde2/template that pointed to
/etc/horde2/templates. This allowed you to customize the interface in a
location that wouldn't be overwritten byt the packaging system. Horde3
should do this as well. Right now I can't really customize horde3 to
look like it is integrated into my site.

Hi Brian,

I'm interested in using this patch against the dhcp3 sources to produce
an additional binary package that would give a dhcp3-server with LDAP
support.

Last time I looked at your patch, it pretty much redid the standard
packaging and produced a modified dhcp3-server package. Looking at it
quickly now, it appears this is still the case.

We can probably work together and get this into Debian fairly easily I'd
think. It's going to take some reworking of debian/rules.

It would work straight away if you dlopen() the module. However, if you
expect PHP to do it for you on startup from php.ini, you kinda have
to... Restart it. Not required for CGI/CLI (as they "startup" on each
invocation), but is required for apache1.3/apache2.

I've had several requests for "restart my webserver after I install
modules", and to be honest, I'm not sure what to do about them. While
it may be helpful in the cases where people don't know what's wrong, it
seems quite a disruptive thing to do for the majority of cases.

So, how does this sound...?

If run_hook() is called with the name of the script and then all the
arguments (i.e. $*) that dhclient-script was called with, then run_hook()
has access to all the arguments. Simply shifting once will throw away the
name of the hook, and make $1 the first argument that dhclient-script was
called with.

If you could please substitute your doctored dhclient-script with what's at
http://people.debian.org/~apollock/dhcp3/dhclient-script and let me know if
I'm on the right track or not, that'd be great.

Directly after a fresh reboot eeboot, "rsh rebooted-host" results in an

"/dev/pts/1" looks like a perfectly fine tty name to me. Subsequent rsh
calls work fine.

I think at least the error message should be clearer, right now it is
wrong, as it did correctly determine the tty name, and something else
failed.

Bug#330829: Version 0.79 breaks vsftpd, "500 OOPS: priv_sock_get_result" reported

2005-10-04 Thread Max Alekseyev

Steve Langasek wrote:

Aha, ok. So after adding two users, trying to log in via su with an empty
password *succeeds* with libpam-modules 0.79-3 here.

Trying to log in to vsftp using your exact config fails; but this problem is
specific to the authorization component of the module, not the
authentication component. The regression in the authorization component can
be explained by the fact that in Linux-PAM 0.76, pam_userdb's
pam_sm_acct_mgmt function didn't do anything except return PAM_SUCCESS. In
0.79, it attempts to verify that the user is present in the database before
returning. But if you've already authenticated the user via pam_userdb,
this check is redundant; I recommend simply dropping the 'account' line from
your vsftpd config.

Dropping 'account' line in /etc/pam.d/vsftpd didn't help.
vsftpd with libpam-modules 0.79-3 still rejects users with empty passwords.
What should I do about that behavior? File a new bugreport?

Yes, there's still a regression in pam_userdb's pam_sm_acct_mgmt(), but
since I'm not sure why this code works *at all* for empty passwords, I'm not
really in a position to track this down.

If so, who can do that?
Could you please forward this bugreport to upstream developers?

Thanks,
Max

You do have deeper understanding of the problem and outcomes than I do
;-) I didn't bother to bisect the problem in two (missing fail2ban
chaing, missing -j to the chain) because either of them is bad. You are
100% right that outcomes are different, but I think that the solution to
both bug reports should come as a 1 piece ;-)

I might adjust README.Debian to reflect the two-fold problem as you
brought it up. So, in any way, discussion was useful - thank you.
I will merge this bug with #329163 so we the issue open till we fix it
in a proper way

Well, maybe this is just nitpicking but in your long description you
mention that the pdf renderer is based on xpdf while it actually is
based on poppler (I know that poppler is a fork of xpdf). I just thought
give credit where credit is due.

Cheers,

I'm probably not aware of all the implications of different
misconfigurations, but I thought 329163 was about the problems that
happen if, for example, fail2ban-ssh is missing. In contrast, in the
case I'm thinking of, fail2ban-ssh (the table) is present, but there
are no references to it from the INPUT table.

>

In both cases fail2ban won't function, but it might fail in different
ways (e.g., in the case I'm thinking of, "banned" IP's continue to
have access; in 329163 that's true, but in addition you get infinite
loops and resource problems). Also, in this case I'm definitely
focused on INPUT being altered, while I thought the other case
concerned the fail2ban-ssh table being non-existent.

My understanding of 329163, or even the consequences of the scenario I
describe, may be faulty. I agree that both problems arise from the
general category "somebody messes with the tables after fail2ban runs."

FWIW, my report was from a "testing" machine that had a bunch of held
packages.

Yesterday I upgraded to ADSL (from a modem), and since my connection was
suddenly 50x faster, I upgraded all the held packages -- and the
problems with xpdf disappeared.

So while there's obviously a dependency missing _somewhere_, I guess it
may not be a problem in practice for those who keep their systems
completely up to date).

Bug#332193: util-vserver: vc_create_context(): Function not implemented

2005-10-04 Thread micah
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: util-vserver
Version: 0.30.204-5sarge2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

As it turns out the 208 util-vserver tools don't properly fall back
to VCMD_ctx_create_v0 if the main one doesn't work, this occurs if
you use these tools with the 1.9.5 kernel patch (and possibly the 1.2
as well).

The result is things such as the following:
# vcontext --create --xid 42 true
vcontext: vc_create_context(): Function not implemented

The normal working call looks like this:
vserver(VCMD_09,1[0], 42)

but util-vserver 208 shows:
vserver(VCMD_09,1[1], 42)

The fix for this is in the following diff (should be applied on top of
fix02):
http://vserver.13thfloor.at/Experimental/delta-0.30.208-fix02-fix03.diff

Bug#332192: ifile: sample scripts use ksh but work just as well with Debian-standard bash

2005-10-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Package: ifile
Version: 1.3.4-2
Severity: minor

Sample scripts use #!/bin/ksh, but #!/bin/bash works just as well, and
/bin/bash is generally found on a Debian system.

I fixed my copies with a perl oneliner:
  perl -i -pe 's{/bin/ksh}{/bin/bash}g' ifile.*

BTW: looks like the mailing lists at nongnu.org have disappeared, even
though they are referenced in the FAQ, etc.

Bug#244314: lockfile-progs: Patch to fix --retry confusion.

2005-10-04 Thread David L. Anselmi
Package: lockfile-progs
Version: 0.1.10
Followup-For: Bug #244314

Here is a patch to remove the man page note about --retry 0 not trying to lock
at all. This was fixed in liblockfile 1.04 (see bug #161685) so the patch also
forces a depends liblockfile >= 1.04. It will close both #244314 and #161685.

HTH, suggestions on better patching appreciated.

Cheers!
Dave

Bug#230615: discussion of pidfile writing incorrect

> I have learned the hard way now why fetchmail uses a non-standard

This is not the whole story, so I'm contributing in the hope that it
will help anyone searching these bug reports. (It would have helped
me, for instance!)

The second number is not a PID at all; it is the polling interval
specified in the config file fetchmail was started with, typically
/etc/fetchmailrc. The line will look like this:
   set daemon 300

You can verify this (without reading source code!) by changing the
number and starting fetchmail again.

If you comment out that line, fetchmail will poll its mailboxes only
once (without becoming a daemon) and will write only its PID to the
pidfile.

Not in policy, IMO. I'd like to keep that camel's nose out of the
tent.

Policy can refer the reader to a separate document with good
programming guides, or "here's a document listing things that are just

Bug#332186: Remove oftpd

2005-10-04 Thread Matthew Danish
Package: ftp.debian.org

Remove oftpd from unstable. It has no active upstream maintainer, has a
couple of outstanding security flaws, and I have no time to attempt to
fix this myself.

Subject: Bug#331808: drupal depends on debconf without | debconf-2.0
alternate; blocks cdebconf transition
Reply-To: Joey Hess <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: drupal

This package depends/pre-depends on debconf without allowing the dependency
to be satisfied with an alternate of debconf-2.0. That is to say, its
dependency should read: debconf | debconf-2.0

Until this is fixed, it is impossible to use this package with cdebconf,
and very hard to impossible to install cdebconf at all.

debconf-2.0 was added to policy as a virtual package in 2002 and has been
provided by debconf since 2003. In early 2004, dh_installdebconf began
automatically adding it as an alternate to debconf in dependencies it
generates for packages using debhelper. So if you're using a current
version of debhelper you should only need to rebuild your package and
review it. If you are not using debhelper, make sure the dependency is
modified to allow debconf-2.0 to satisfy it.

This bug report was filed by semiautomated means after a trio of posts to
the debian-devel mailing list, and you have probably also received a bcced
mail about the issue before. If your package's dependencies are correct and
it really has some valid reason to depend on debconf alone, please reassign
this bug report to cdebconf with an explanation of what debconf feature
your package depends on, so it can be reimplemented in cdebconf.

Huh? The latest upload (efax 1:0.9a-16) has that dependency.
Should your mass bug report have indicated a Version, is it
malfunctioning or what?

Thanks for any information,

Thanks for doing that. I wonder, though, how it then survives the three tests
(against R stable, patched and devel -- roughly equivalent to our stable,
testing and unstable) on the CRAN tests, but looking at lines 167 and 168 in
http://cran.r-project.org/src/contrib/checkSummary.html
reveals that CRAN uses boot 1.2.23 against R-devel and 1.2.22 against
R-released (aka 2.1.1) and R-patched (I presume that's the release
candidate).

So it looks like I am guilty by having inserted boot 1.2.23 "too soon". Oh
well.

Bug#332182: libgtk2.0-0: valgrind reports errors inside gtk/gdk/glib

2005-10-04 Thread Jason Dorje Short
Package: libgtk2.0-0
Version: 2.6.10-1

When running Freeciv 2.0 (currently in debian unstable, also downloadable
from http://freeciv.org/) under valgrind, I get a number of warnings and
errors inside the glib and gdk libraries. Some of these are actual errors
that look like they could cause a crash under the right circumstances.

The natural tendancy is probably to blame the calling code for these
errors rather than the library, but I don't see how this could be the case
here. In fact several of the major bugs (an invalid read inside
gtk_parse_args) can be reproduced using the program below. Other bugs aren't
included here but the full output of the valgrind runs can be found at

Bug#331796: debhelper depends on debconf without | debconf-2.0 alternate; blocks cdebconf transition

2005-10-04 Thread Joey Hess
reassign 331796 cdebconf,debhelper
thanks

debhelper depends on debconf because dh_installdebconf uses
debconf-mergetemplate in some edge cases (non-po template translations).

Either cdebconf needs to include an implementation of
debconf-mergetemplate, or debhelper needs to find a way to drop this
dependency. Unfortunatly, dropping deps from debhelper is hard. However,
we might be able to argue that the old style template translations are
so broken as to be useless and so just remove support for them from
debhelper.

IIRC Woody is only supported for security updates at this point. This
is a known bug; that said, I'm not sure if it's still open in the BTS
or not.

My recommended solution for now is to disable querying with
--no-query-bts (or no-query-bts in your .reportbugrc).

Bug#332179: bug in search box

2005-10-04 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.3.4-1
Severity: minor
Tags: experimental

I notice an interesting problem with the search box in the
experimental version:

If I type a search term and go to the "Ok" button and hit "enter", the
search term seems not to be saved. If I hit "n" nothing happens or
the last saved search term is used, depending on what I did before the
search.
If I don't go to "Ok", but hit "enter" with the cursor still in the
input field everything works as expected...

Unfortunatelly CUPS scheduler daemon isn't desined to launch from
inetd. I'm sorry but I set wontfix tag to your wish.

You can ask it to upstream developers again, but in my opinion they
won't like it.

More detail,
1. To launch from inetd, daemon needs a specific routine to exit after all
   jobs are done.
2. CUPS daemon works always at background, not only job
spooling. Broadcasting or listening informations on the network,
   job scheduling, and so on.

I'm sorry to hear that :-(

Me too :(

I will try to find some time to look at the dante sources to find
any significant differences.

Hmmm the only two changelog entries I can see are:

v1.17 has "Fix bug involving setting "pam.servicename""

v1.16 "Allow PAM tests to be disabled" and also
Return immediate error if username/password is wrong in the common
case, rather than delaying it for later. Helps avoid the case where
socks-clients cache the wrong username/password. Reworked
rule-checking code a little too.

I can put together a v1.16 test package if that'd be useful.

Thanks,

Adrian

So I've juste tested the old releases, building the sources from
ftp://ftp.inet.no/pub/socks/old/.

The 1.1.15 works perfectly, but the 1.1.16 has the same symptom than the
1.1.18.

It seems that the "Return immediate error if username/password is wrong
in the
common case, rather than delaying it for later" modifications break
something ... at least in

my case ...

I will investigate it through the sources tomorrow.

Nicolas.

Bug#331661: extensions/*.jar ship without source code, shipped jar files are installed

Matthias Klose wrote:

Package: docbook-xsl

The extensions contains many jar files, without having the sources in
the source package, the problematic files seem to be:

  saxon644.jar
  saxon65.jar
  saxon651.jar
  saxon652.jar
  saxon653.jar

I don't change what comes in the upstream source package.

It looks like the source for saxon643.jar and xalan25.jar is provided,
but they are not built during the build process.

If docbook-xsl is now going to require a rebuild of the (supposedly)
portable jars, then we need to rethink how to package this stuff.

I'd hand it over to the java group, but they might not get the xml
catalog stuff correct - it's subtle.

Cheers,

First, I apologize if you feel my previous Email is offending you.

But Debian website [1] gives clear instruction on following up bugs, to
quote, under "Important things to note before sending":

You should check if your bug report has already been filed by
someone else before submitting it. Lists of currently outstanding
bugs are available on the World Wide Web and elsewhere - see other
documents for details. You can submit your comments to an existing
bug report # by sending e-mail to @bugs.debian.org

1. http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting

And I suppose everyone who want to participate in Debian project should
read some minimal documentation first. I am not unfriendly to every
newbie, I am just unfriendly to newbies that don't even bother to read
documentations before asking for help.

Bug#324302: New patch

Hello Andree and everyone,

> A difference to the old behaviour is in both cases that only
>libraries in tls are returned (if this is what ldd reports) and not the
>non-tls counterparts. I believe that this is acceptable, though

I tried this patch on an "old" sarge and with a recent install, and this seems
to be a problem (libc6 can't be found anymore - so the mindi CD is broken).
So, I changed it in order to get the same libraries returned as with the old
behaviour.
It works perfectly for me (tested with an old and a new libc6)

The patch is attached.

I thought the idea behind debinstaller was to have something more

Bug#329246: Another patch

2005-10-04 Thread thierry lathuille
Hello,

Thank you very much for your message, Andree - you really deserved your
vacation ;-)

I had seen the bug on mindi, but I had not paid enough attention to it. So, I
looked at it again and tried the patch, on both a Sarge system (on which it
worked before) and a recent one (on which it didn't).

Well, the patch breaks both ; but I changed it to get it to work - more
details on #324302, with the new patch.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=324302

If others can try and see if it works for them, that would be nice !

Bug#329090: util-vserver: barrier not working, but chroot escape does

These bug reports are very confusing, I am performing my own tests to
help clarify.

No, "VCI: (unknown)" is fine in 2.4 because 2.4 has no VCI info.

The following is the results of my tests:

For all tests the following packages need to be installed:
xfsprogs jfsutils reiserfsprogs reiser4progs util-vserver
(0.30.204-5sarge2 unless otherwise noted)

Procedure is to do:
1. # dd bs=1024k count=1024 if=/dev/zero of=/home/1gb.testfile
2. # losetup /dev/loop4 /home/1gb.testfile
3. # mkdir /mnt2

On 2.6 kernels the following switches were used to test:
4. # ./testfs.sh-0.09 -vv -D /dev/loop4 -M /mnt2

Test 1:

Sarge kernel 2.6.8 (2.6.8-16) with debian package kernel-patch-vserver
(debian package version: 1.9.5.3, kernel patch:
patch-2.6.8-15-vs1.9.5.x-4.diff.gz) applied on an i386 machine.

Results:
All the tests succeed on ext2/ext3/reiserfs, the following fail:
xfs: 103, 106, 113, 115, 117
jfs: 104, 114, 121, 122, 123, 124

Test 2:

Sarge kernel 2.6.8 (2.6.8-16) with debian kernel-patch-vserver (debian
package version: 1.9.5.4 (not in sarge), kernel patch
patch-2.6.8-15-vs1.9.5.x-5.diff.gz) applied on an i386 machine.

Results:
Exactly the same as the results from Test 1

Test 3:

Sarge kernel 2.4.27 (2.4.27-10) with the debian kernel-patch-vserver
(debian package version: 1.9.5.3, kernel patch
patch-2.4.27-9-vs1.2.10-2.diff.gz) applied on an i386 machine.

Results:

ext2/ext3 failures: 103, 104, 106, 109, 114, 121, 122, 124
xfs failures: 103, 104, 106, 109, 114, 115, 117, 121, 122, 124
reiserfs failures: 103, 104, 106, 109, 114, 118, 119, 121, 122, 124
jfs failures: 103, 104, 106, 109, 112, 113, 114, 116, 118, 119, 121,
122, 123, 124

Note: Bertl says this is a failure with the util-vserver tools, so I
perform the test again with util-vserver .208 from unstable:

Test 4:
Sarge kernel 2.4.27 (2.4.27-10) with the debian kernel-patch-vserver
(debian package version: 1.9.5.3, kernel patch
patch-2.4.27-9-vs1.2.10-2.diff.gz) applied on an i386 machine. Using
util-vserver tools from unstable (0.30.208-2)

ext2/ext3 failures: 104, 106, 114, 122, 124
xfs failures: 103, 104, 106, 114, 115, 117, 121, 122, 124
reiserfs failures: 104, 106, 114, 118, 119, 122, 124
jfs failures: 102, 103, 104, 106, 109, 112, 113, 114, 116, 118, 119,
121, 122, 123, 124

Bug#293307: parted does not recognize MS-DOS partition table on iPod

2005-10-04 Thread K.G.
Hi,

I just took a look to the ipod_boot_sector you sent and the only
thing I'm sure about is that Apple completely messed up the format...

This is a mix of an MBR and a DBR describing a FAT32... I've never
seen something so crazy before. That's quite like mixing a
container and its content. Parted rejects it because it checks
for "FAT" at well known places of the sector to check if the sector
is not indeed a DBR instead of an MBR, because another brillant guy
from MS choose to use the same signature for both, and this check
can't be removed because this would be dangerous for some USB keys
with no partition table.

Even the MBR part and the DBR part of the mix are full of mistakes :
wrong endianess in a short indicates that sectors are 2 bytes length
instead of 512, and the iPod system partition has ID 0 which should
only be used for free entries!

I won't fix anything to make Parted works with Dos formated iPod
unless Apple put some specs somewhere, because what they did is
clearly not an msdos disklabel anymore even if it still works on
some lazy systems. As there doesn't seem to be any place to ask
these kind of questions to Apple, this is quite unlikely to
happen.

Cheers,
Guillaume Knispel

Bug#331618: scim-chinese still not installable

2005-10-04 Thread Wilmer Lau
If I had known the proper 'process', I would have done so. Thanks for
informing me now. I won't do so in the future.

However, you don't sound very 'welcoming' to a newbie like me to
participate in the Debian process in the future. I've heard problems
with Debian's community being somewhat exclusive, not friendly, and
welcoming. If you were me, and you received this response, would you
continue participating in the Debian community?

I don't appreciate your attitude although your recommendation to me
file bugs would be correct. It's too bad you're 'annoyed'.

Xkoules segfaults on 64 bits architectures where a long int is bigger
than 32 bits. The problem is line 157 of xlib/interface.c:

unsigned long *out = (unsigned long *) source.ximage->data;

This should be replaced by:

uint32_t *out = (uint32_t *) source.ximage->data;

Bug#331718: Woody: reportbug crashes querying BTS: "IndexError: list index out of range"

2005-10-04 Thread Ewen McNeill
Package: reportbug
Version: 1.50
Severity: important

Recently (last known to work a few weeks ago), reportbug in Debian Woody
crashes with a Python error and traceback immediately after querying the
Debian BTS. This means that bugs cannot be reported using the Woody
"reportbug", except by forcing reportbug not to query the BTS (eg,
by giving it a proxy setting that doesn't work).

I'm guessing that the BTS interface has changed in some manner which renders
the Woody "reportbug" out of date, but am reporting the issue since Woody
is still nominally supported.

If this can't be fixed, or is not going to be fixed, it may be worth
leaving the bug tagged "wontfix" and "woody" with an explanation of
what is going on and a workaround to avoid others struggling with the
same problem. (I couldn't obviously see a similar bug report.)

I installed texi2html and verified that this particular issue has now
been fixed. Unfortunately, they put the anchor *after* the label so that
following the index entry may still cause the label to scroll off the
top of the page.

Bug#331089: rageircd: stack trace of where it ends up

2005-10-04 Thread Alasdair McWilliam

Phil,

I believe your observations are correct. That is, two manifestations
of the same bug.

I've had this problem for a number of months, as I said, on a FreeBSD
server. However we have an almost identical server (also running
FreeBSD) and the ircd has an uptime of almost six months.

Gah! I thought it was just the server as it had some hardware issues,
but I guess this confirms it's a software bug. It occurs in LIST and
NICK now and then too.

Have you actually compiled in Debug mode? I.E. with --enable-debug at
configure, and running with the "-x 9" argument. That will create
debug.log. (Beware: sensitive information such as passwords may be
logged.)

That, however, looks like that we have either _two_ bugs, or you have
a hardware issue. A single bug would most probnably show at the same
point .

Reading the code, it looked like it could be two manifestations of
the same bug to me. The two lines are doing exactly the same thing,
just under differing initial conditions (depending on exactly what
server away message it's processing it ends up under two different
if branches)

I am reluctant to call hardware bug because this server has served
and continues to serve several other daemons fulltime for many
months under its current setup without any glitches: sshd, apache,
imapd, exim4, dovecot-imapd, samba.

Sure, it might be the "right way", but somewhy i dont see you run to write that patches yourself. The reality is that we have debinstaller which is a nice way to install a single package without that mad typing,
and it produces exactly the same results as you would expect from dpkg. Moreover, I found it to be very time saving andhelpfull, but i understand if Debian is too "elite" to save its users time. And as a reply for Christoph's comment

[2nd attempt to submit this bug]

Thanks to recent local chaos, the system attempted to deliver some
undeliverable messages to the original sender, logcheck.

as an entry. When I checked, I discovered a signficant, though old,

There's similar story for cyrus.

I don't know if either matter is properly an exim issue, but this
seemed the best place to report it.

This suggests a more general idea: maybe there should be a router that
sends all messages for users < 1000 to root? I recall there's some
Debian policy that would allow identification of account type from
uid.

Though I've filed a lot of trivial bugs today, and this one is only
wishlist, I'd say it's a bit important. Otherwise, people may not
ever see some messages.
