The globals problem described does apply to php 4.3.10.

However, in reading over the description of the vulnerabilities, I don't
really see any grounds for regarding these as grave securty bugs. The most
severe of these problems, 202005.79, only has a significant impact when
register_globals is set in the PHP environment -- a setting which has been
strongly deprecated for quite some time, and which is disabled by default in
sarge. There is a *lot* of PHP application code that is vulnerable to XSS
or remote injection attacks when run with register_globals on, or which does
stupid things with manually registering request variables as global
variables; I'm not convinced that this warrants a grave bug against PHP...

Just a short update:

the crashes are gone with 3.4.3-1 (currently in experimental). So, no need to
still 'fix' this one, since I guess that 3.4.3 will go in unstable in a
relatively short time.

Bug#336743: doesn't break long \hrefs in DVI while PDF does

I just upgraded to 3.0 and noticed that DVI does not break long \hrefs
across a line - while PDF does. A simple test case is attached.

BTW, this new xdvi is cool.

Hello,

to prevent race-conditions in webalizer (logfile is rotated before
webalizer can read it) it would be nice to have one rotated but
uncompressed logfile.
logrotate supports this via the delaycompress keyword. For example,
the apache packages uses that, too.

Thanks for your work & regards

Bug#336739: Please parse changelogs (thereby ignoring Emacs cruft)

2005-10-31 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: apt-listchanges
Version: 2.59-0.2
Severity: wishlist

I just made a dist-upgrade and in the news sent to me by
apt-listchanges, the formating was broken because of some Emacs stuff
included at the end of dictionaries-common.NEWS. If apt-listchanges
would properly parse changelog entries, such cruft at the end would
be ignored. I think this would also address #247356 ("Please put a

2005-10-31 Thread Alexis Huxley
Your premise that:

is right; one does not need a local named in order to resolve the
name of a remote time server. But ...

... running a local name server with resolv.conf containing 127.0.0.1
is quite a common and accepted practice; it's called a "caching-only
name server." A quick google will show the commonness of this approach
on Debian:

http://www.google.com/search?q=caching-only+nameserver+site:.debian.org&num=100&hl=en&lr=&sa

I suspect that the original poster has this configuration; certainly
I do. And then we're back to the original problem:

This is definitely a bug in the ordering and should be reclassified
out of "won't fix".

Bug#336738: Broken symlink /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/kaffeine/common

2005-10-31 Thread Thomas Luzat
Package: kaffeine
Version: 0.7.1-1.2
Severity: minor

The symlink /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/kaffeine/common points to:

../../../kde/HTML/en/common

but should point to:

../../../../kde/HTML/en/common

or like in most - if not all - other KDE packages just to:

../common

Thanks!

Bug#336735: please remove Emacs cruft from dictionaries-common.NEWS

2005-10-31 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: dictionaries-common
Version: 0.62.0
Severity: minor

I just made a dist-upgrade and in the news sent to me by
apt-listchanges, the formating was broken because of the Emacs stuff
included in dictionaries-common.NEWS.

Can you please remove this? I don't use Emacs myself but I've been
told that it automatically recognizes debian/changelog these days. If
it doesn't recognize debian/*NEWS, pleases file a bug on Emacs or
change your configuration. Thanks.

Gladly, but I don't know where to look for it. What I did was upgrade

Bug#336733: kernel-package tells me we're being reinstalled AND updated

not be built correctly right now, since the module list for the
running kernel are likely to be different from the kernel installed.
I am creating a new modules.dep file, but that may not be
correct. It shall be regenerated correctly at next reboot.

I repeat: you have to reboot in order for the modules file to be
created correctly. Until you reboot, it may be impossible to load
some modules. Reboot as soon as this install is finished (Do not
reboot right now, since you may not be able to boot back up until
installation is over, but boot immediately after). I can not stress
that too much. You need to reboot soon.

Bug#336731: bzr: DEB_PYTHON_COMPILE_VERSION = vs := (CDBS tutorial)

2005-10-31 Thread Bob Tanner
Package: bzr

0.6's debian/rules shows

But the tutorial at https://wiki.duckcorp.org/DebianPackagingTutorial/CDBS under
the section "Using the Python class" shows

DEB_PYTHON_COMPILE_VERSION := 2.3

Note the = vs :=, changing it gives me different behavior when building the

Bug#336732: /lib/modules/*/build symlink should be ignored when checking if kernel is installed

2005-10-31 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: kernel-package
Version: 9.008.4

I just installed a new kernel but it told me that the modules
directory exists already and asked whether I really want to continue.
There was only a "build" directory in the modules dir, pointing to
linux-headers. The build symlink should be ignored when checking if
there are modules.

Bug#336730: Prints error when no kernel is installed

2005-10-31 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: grub
Version: 0.95+cvs20040624-18
Severity: minor

I just temporarily removed my kernel package and when grub-update was
run, I got:

| Ok, proceeding with removing running kernel image.

| Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst .
| Searching for splash image... none found, skipping...
| /bin/ls: /boot/vmlinuz-*: No such file or directory

It would be nice if 'ls' was used in a way that no error is shown when
/boot/vmlinuz-* doesn't exist, e.g. "ls -1 /boot | grep ^vmlinuz-" or
something.

Thanks, Horms just reminded me of this fact... this makes sense.

OK, I guess in this case this bug report is obsolete... however, given
that nothing uses initrd-tools's Provides of 'linux-initrd-tool', I
suggest this to be removed.

Right, I didn't realize that but now that you say it it's pretty
obvious.

In this case, I guess this bug report can be closed and yaird or
initramfs-tools should stay as default. Maybe the kernel team can
decide whether yaird or initramfs-tools should be the default.

Could you report it to upstream, at the following addreseses

Bug#336729: inconsistent and ugly output messages

2005-10-31 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: grub
Version: 0.95+cvs20040624-18
Severity: minor

I just got the following messages during upgrade:

| Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub .
| Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst .
| Searching for splash image... none found, skipping...
| Found kernel: /vmlinuz-2.6.12-1-686
| Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

This is all pretty minor but there are several things that could be
improved here:

 - the messages are not consistent with regards to spacing before
an ellipsis. In Debian it's common to put a space there.

 - in the first two lines, the dot at the end looks a bit strange
since it has a space before... in fact, it's also inconsistent
with the last but one line where no dot is printed at the end.
I suggest no dot is printed in the former two cases either.

This does not meet the definition of a grave bug. It is quite likely that
it is not a bug at all -- /dev/urandom is *not* a proper replacement for
/dev/random when real entropy is needed, and the Debian packages should not
sacrifice security casually.

I just noticed that /usr/bin/rmic doesn't exist. It's handled through

Bug#336721: Confusion regarding ramdisk Provides; is initrd-tools still supported?

2005-10-31 Thread Jurij Smakov

On Tue, 1 Nov 2005, Martin Michlmayr wrote:

Package: initrd-tools

linux-2.6 no longer allows initrd-tools for the generation of the
initrd. It's not clear however whether this is intentional or just a
typo. The following changelog claims that all initrd/initramfs
generating tools are supported, so I assume this would include
initrd-tools:

| linux-2.6 (2.6.13+2.6.14-rc4-0experimental.1) experimental; urgency=low

| * Fixed control.image.in to depend on :
| initramfs-tools | yaird | linux-ramdisk-tool
|where linux-ramdisk-tools is the virtual package provided by all
|initrd/initramfs generating tools.

initramfs-tools and yaird provide 'linux-initramfs-tool' while
initrd-tools provides 'linux-initrd-tool'. I see that the current
linux-2.6 depends on linux-initramfs-tool, but that is not fulfiled by
initrd-tools.

Is this a typo in the Provides of initrd-tools or will initrd-tools
not work with 2.6.14 kernels?

As far as I can tell, this is correct. Initrds for current kernels *must*
be generated using either yaird or initramfs-tools (both of which are
experimental software, by the way), since devfs support was dropped in
2.6.13 and initrd-tools rely heavily on it. We still need initrd-tools for
situations when we have, let's say, 2.6.8 and 2.6.14 installed at the same
time.

Unless I am very much mistaken, the core of the problem is that since
devfs disapeared in 2.6.12, initrd-tools is no longer a viable choice,
so we are scrambling to find one. Both Yarid and initramfs-tools are now
under very heavy development, progress is being made by the day, and to
be honest the whole thing seems to be a lot less painful that I feared.

Yes, it helped, but then I got errors for other lines in my
'fstab' so I added " 0 0" to the end of those lines. Now the install
works. (And much appreciation for the accurate diagnostics!)

Looks like 'yaird' is finicky about 'fstab' formats. Supposing there's
a good reason for that... if so it might be better for users if the
'yaird' installer script checked 'fstab' when upgrading or replacing
'initrd' systems, then after finding such malformed 'fstab' lines it
could offer to correct those -- but if correcting those was unfeasible,
it should advise users that their 'fstab' needs fixing.

The interesting bit is what to do about kernels that don't *have*
an fbcon, modular or otherwise.

Given that the loading is done from a configuration file, we can expect
users of such kernels to drop the loading command from the config file,
so I don't see objections to loading by default.

Hi Vincent,

sorry for the inaction on this problem for so long. I breifly played

VT8233/A/8235/8237, so I don't get anywhere. I'm forwarding it to the

Jaroslav,

Just to recap what is at http://bugs.debian.org/319789/, which isn't
much. It seems that snd_via82xx isn't handling the MPU of a VIA82C686

Bug#336725: debconf message not correct, and probably debconf abuse too

2005-10-31 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: acpid
Version: 1.0.4-3
Severity: minor

I just got the following debconf message when upgrading:

| Kernel ACPI support

| Your current kernel does not have ACPI support enabled. In order to be
| able to use the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface support you need
| to recompile your kernel with ACPI support enabled.

Actually, my kernel has ACPI support enabled but I explicitly disabled
it with acpi=off during boot. Therefore what this message says about
recompilation is wrong. Please mention something like 'active' (and
maybe how) too.

By the way, I think this message is an abuse of debconf. I have apmd
and acpid installed because I mostly use APM but sometimes use ACPI;
I'm not sure users need to be told that ACPI support has to be enabled
in order to use acpid in a debconf note... it seems pretty clear.
CCing our debconf god for comment.

fileutils (>= 4.0)

I'd like to use initramfs-tools 0.37 from unstable which uses the

Bug#335114: zoo: proposed fix for AMD64

2005-10-31 Thread carlj
The following is a patch for a fix to the source files, but I haven't
fixed the debian/rules file, since I don't know how you want to handle
it.

The problem turns out to be a fundamental assumption that a long is 32
bits. The header includes a 32 bit number and its complement (both
defined as longs), and the program verifies integrity by adding these
together and comparing the result to 0L. Of course with 64 bit longs
the result is not zero, so the comparison fails, but it only checks
before modifying the archive. The result is it does not fail when
reading, extracting, or creating an archive. The program can easily
be tested for this problem by creating an archive with a file
(eg. 'zoo -a zootest.zoo '), and then repeating the command.
It should fail when trying to add the second time.

The following is a patch to the files, where I used a define of LONG64
to ifdef the change. Notice that the change I used assumes that an
int is 32 bits, which I think is true of all x86 (not just AMD64), and
probably all other debian 32-bit architectures.

Bug#336721: Confusion regarding ramdisk Provides; is initrd-tools still supported?

2005-10-31 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: initrd-tools

linux-2.6 no longer allows initrd-tools for the generation of the
initrd. It's not clear however whether this is intentional or just a
typo. The following changelog claims that all initrd/initramfs
generating tools are supported, so I assume this would include
initrd-tools:

| linux-2.6 (2.6.13+2.6.14-rc4-0experimental.1) experimental; urgency=low

| * Fixed control.image.in to depend on :
| initramfs-tools | yaird | linux-ramdisk-tool
|where linux-ramdisk-tools is the virtual package provided by all
|initrd/initramfs generating tools.

initramfs-tools and yaird provide 'linux-initramfs-tool' while
initrd-tools provides 'linux-initrd-tool'. I see that the current
linux-2.6 depends on linux-initramfs-tool, but that is not fulfiled by
initrd-tools.

Is this a typo in the Provides of initrd-tools or will initrd-tools
not work with 2.6.14 kernels?

Bug#336710: don't do that

2005-10-31 Thread Albert Cahalan
Sure, this ought to be fixed to use gcc's option to not delete files, but...

You really need to stop building stuff as root. That's nuts. This is not
a Windows system. Use the fakeroot tools if you must, but that should
not be required. There are lots of errors that could wipe out /dev/null,
and even worse, so we have this idea of not using the root account to
do random odd unprivileged tasks. Some call it "least privilege".

Here's a classic disaster you'll love:

rm -rf $FOO/*

What if $FOO is not set?

I'd much more suspect an ACPI problem, than a console problem.
But it would be nice verify this before passing it on upstream.

More or less deliberately breaking systems isn't the way to go imho.
I took a brief look at yaird and the README clearly states that it is
experimental software and not a viable replacement for initrd-tools
yet - doesn't sound like a good default choice to me then, even in
unstable.

For reference, this is from yaird's README:

YAIRD -- Yet Another MkInitRd
=

This is a proof of concept rewrite of mkinitrd, intended to test the
idea that we can get a more accurate picture of the modules needed
to boot a linux system by fully utilizing the information in sysfs.
It comes with templates that make it possible to generate different
initrd or initramfs images for different distributions.

Proof of concept means this software is barely tested: it may
produce a working image, or it may eat your disk. This is a good
moment to re-read the "NO WARRANTY" part of the licence,
and decide whether you want to test this software.

Thanks, much apreciated.

It seems that we are stuck with having SECURITY_CAPABILITIES=y.
And as we know, that completely breaks modular LSM.

I think this is something we have to live with unless LSM
can be integraded upstream.

Yes, that seems to be the current school of thought.

Unfortunately, this destroys the time sequence. But it looks very much
like usbcore is slow to insmod, and the ehci-hcd.ko and uhci-hcd.ko
modules are not waiting for it to be inserted.

Hmm, if the root filesystem is read-only, then the locking will fail
(you need to open a file read/write to get an exclusive fcntl lock).
Perhaps this is happening to you? If not, please check again that you
have the modified modprobe (strace of modprobe uhci-hcd after usbcore is
already inserted should show it locking usbcore).

We need to change locking strategy, I think. Yet there's no clear way
to do this. Might have to lock each module in the kernel somehow.
Fucking Unix, what a mess.

Rusty.

sure, but handling some situations well is often better than handling no
situations well :)

indeed.

okay, that got me as far as building an image (although the Template.cfg
patch didn't apply cleanly to version 0.0.11-9 of yaird, but i figured
it out all the same). perhaps include (and if needed, update) these
patches in a README.nfsroot or doc/examples/nfsroot.cfg or some such?

ideally, a simple setup could be enabled by changing a single
configuration option :)

unfortunately, i still wasn't able to get it to boot, having
similar/identical issues as with initramfs-tools: debian bug 336519

Bug#336714: tetex-base: asked about upgrade of previously non-existent conffile /etc/texdoctk/texdocrc

2005-10-31 Thread Hamish Moffatt
Package: tetex-base
Version: 3.0-10
Severity: normal

When upgrading to tetex-base 3.0-10, I was asked about my changes to
the file /etc/texdoctk/texdocrc through ucf. When I asked to see the
differences against my installed version, the diff was against /dev/null
so every line was new.

I did not delete the previous version of this file, and did not even
know it existed. This package or another either removed it or failed
to install it. However, I shouldn't have been asked about it.

thanks

Bug#336711: libncurses5: successful call to assume_default_colors can leave color -1 invalid

2005-10-31 Thread Ron
--- Begin Message ---
Package: libncurses5
Version: 5.5-1
Severity: normal

My apologies if you've seen this already, it vanished into
a black hole the first time I submitted it to the bts,
and I haven't heard from either you or Thomas, after
forwarding a copy directly a couple of days later.
It still hasn't shown up in the bts, so I'm submitting
it again now...

Hi,

I was poking at the use of terminal default colours today and
ran into what looks like a bug in assume_default_colors.

If it is called with neither of its arguments as -1, then
SP->_default_color is set to be false, and consequently
any attempt to use init_pair to define a color pair using
-1 to get the terminal default will fail.

eg.

assume_default_colors( COLOR_RED, COLOR_GREEN );

will set the default colours as specified, but it is then
impossible to init_pair( 1, COLOUR_WHITE, -1 ); or any
similar combination.

It doesn't seem like there is anything that should
fundamentally prohibit that from working, and especially
if assume_default_colors might import its colour values
from the environment it would seem like init_pair should
still work as advertised after a successful call to one
of the *_default_colors functions.

But of course there may be more to this that I miss...

cheers,
Ron

To all concerned,

this was indeed fallout from some packaging changes. The missing line
should now be in the tree for each architecture - though I had to do a
bit of guess, so if you are an arch maintainer, please take a peek.

The fix should appear in 2.6.14-2, and that should be released shortly.

There seems to be an unrelated headers problem, #336424, which has
been around since 2.6.12-X, but only noticed recently. I'd like to get
that fixed, but it seems much less severe than this problem.

Bug#336710: Removes /dev/null if build with root privileges

2005-10-31 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
Package: procps
Version: 1:3.2.5-1
Severity: serious

procps has the following code in its Makefile:

check_gcc = $(shell if $(CC) $(ALL_CPPFLAGS) $(ALL_CFLAGS) dummy.c
$(ALL_LDFLAGS) $(1) -o /dev/null $(CURSES) > /dev/null 2>&1; then echo "$(1)";
else echo "$(2)"; fi ;)

There is a problem with this code: If run with root privileges
(e.g. by building the package with sudo) and the gcc call fails, gcc
will delete the output file, which is /dev/null.
(The package in incoming has the same code, in case you wonder about the
version number)

It would certainly be better to use a temporary file as destination.

High severity since at least the mips(el) buildds currently use sudo and
were hit by the problem.

Gruesse,

Bug#331714: DSA-809-2: patch: squid: -woody10: crash on FTP data channel close

2005-10-31 Thread Ewen McNeill
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: I'm CCing you because the bug was introduced in the
last security update (DSA-809-2) for Squid on Debian Woody. It would
be helpful if a security update could be issued without this bug; there
is a patch at the end of this message.

Credit for the discovery of the cause of this bug and providing a fix
should go to "Kosa Attila" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (see bug #332251)
I'm just (a) explaining how to reproduce the problem, (b) providing a
more easily applied patch and (c) bringing it to more people's attention,
since that fix seems to have been ignored.

Squid -woody10 introduces a flaw which causes the FTP connections
through Squid to cause squid to abort with an assertion failure when the
data channel completes, eg:

  squid[20250]: assertion failed: comm.c:636: "F->flags.open"
squid[20235]: Squid Parent: child process 20250 exited due to signal 6

This is reported as bug #331714 (mine), and #332251.

The flaw is easily demonstrated by starting a FTP connection
through the Squid proxy (eg, ftp_proxy=http://localhost:3128/ lynx
ftp://ftp.debian.org/) and trying to download a file via FTP. Directory
listings are okay (there is separate code to handle those properly),
but any attempt to download a file will result in squid failing on
the assertion.

The cause is ftpDataRead() (src/ftp.c:872) calling commSetSelect()
(at src/ftp.c:942) irrespective of whether or not the the data connection
was completed, and hence ftpReadComplete() was called to close the data
connection. commSetSelect() (src/comm.c:632) checks that the connection
it is being told to watch is actually open with an assertion
(at src/comm.c:636), which fails when called on a connection that has
been closed.

-woody10 (with Debian patches) contains the source:
(-woody10 src/ftp.c: lines 938 to 946)

-=- cut here -=-
if (ftpState->size > 0 && mem->inmem_hi >= ftpState->size +
mem->reply->hdr_sz)
ftpReadComplete(ftpState);
else
storeBufferFlush(entry);
commSetSelect(fd,
COMM_SELECT_READ,
ftpDataRead,
data,
Config.Timeout.read);
-=- cut here -=-

Despite the optimistic indenting, in C what this means is that if the
file transfer completed, close the socket and then try to set
up a call back on that closed socket.

The flaw is obvious when comparing it with the upstream 2.4.6 source:
(upstream 2.4.6 src/ftp.c: lines 924 to 931)

-=- cut here -=-
if (ftpState->size > 0 && mem->inmem_hi >= ftpState->size +
mem->reply->hdr_sz)
ftpReadComplete(ftpState);
else
commSetSelect(fd,
COMM_SELECT_READ,
ftpDataRead,
data,
Config.Timeout.read);
-=- cut here -=-

The line "storeBufferFlush(entry);" has been introduced in -woody10, which
means that is reserved for the else-path rather than the commSetSelect()
being reserved for the else-path (ie, connection not finished).

The correct fix, as discovered by "Kosa Attila" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
is to enclose the else-path in braces, so that both the storeBufferFlush()
and the commSetSelect() are reserved for the else-path. I have tested
this on my Woody test server, and without it ftp data connections always
cause a crash, and with the fix ftp connections are fine; I plan to put
it into production tonight.

A more easily applied patch is enclosed below.

2.5.9-10sarge2 in Debian Sarge does not suffer from ths issue because
2.5.9 has a rewritten ftpDataRead() function that has been restructured
to avoid this sort of issue.

Bug#336709: gtk+2.0-directfb: FTBFS on GNU/kFreeBSD

2005-10-31 Thread Aurelien Jarno
Package: gtk+2.0-directfb
Version: 2.0.9.2-9
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Hi,

gtk+2.0-directfb fails to build on GNU/kFreeBSD because kfreebsd-i386 is
not in the architectures list and because of outdated libtool.

Please find attached a patch that add kfreebsd-i386 to the architectures
list and which update libtool at build time (since the tarball is
expanded at build time). Note that the patch also includes to small
fixes necessary to be able to run autoconf.

Would it be possible to include it in the next upload?

Thanks in advance,
Aurelien

My system uses config/texinfo.tex from the make source package. If I
replace this file with /usr/share/texmf/tex/texinfo/texinfo.tex, the
build succeeds.

I don't understand why your system doesn't use the local texinfo.tex.

This looks like AptPkg breakage, because it segfaults when destroying
pkgSrcRecords.

  I certainly can't reproduce this:

% /usr/bin/ruby1.8 -e 'puts require("Qt")'
true

I can reproduce this when using IrDA. My own repository now has the fix for
this. You can find it at:
http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~ubq7/debian/

Note however, that you misuse obexftp: /dev/rfcomm0 is bluetooth which has
it's own access method with option -b (and that works with the version
currently in Debian).

Michael: please upload the new version. Thanks.

If you change debian/rules to run "build/scripts/bzr selftest" instead
of "./bzr selftest", does it pass?

Oh, sorry for this. I'm now told that --with-external-libmad does not

Did you try to use --enable-mad in Debian's version of libxine? It'd
be useful to know, since it's easier to do a NMU with that change,
rather than introduce a new upstream version.

Yes, seems like the XINE maintainer is a bit MIA. :(

I cannot reproduce your problem here.
Other questions:

Do you happen to have dpkg-cross inside your pbuilder chroot?
Are you running pdebuild inside a pbuilder session?

It doesn't; this is a known bug in libssl0.9.8, which also *shouldn't* use
libz.so.

Leaving the bug here for documentation purposes, but the real bug is 334180.
