It supports the same thing for changelogs, but I don't find this to be a
very good idea in practice. We may consider NEWS.Debian a different case,
but the above isn't a very solid argument. I suggest holding a discussion
rather than filing bugs.

Chill out and read point #1 on http://www.debian.org/devel/tech-ctte .

It was not discussed, and apt-listchanges (are there any other tools which
use this file?) has always used that interpretation.

If I'm not mistaken, dh_installchangelogs defaults to copying the same
NEWS.Debian file into each binary package, just as it does with changelog,
so this was a reasonable assumption from my perspective.

It sounds like perhaps it is time to standardize this in the policy manual.

"This setup" refers to binary packages built from the same source
having distinct NEWS.Debian files, a feature which is supported by
Debhelper, and usage of Debhelper is recommended in Developer's
Reference 6.3.4.

If you still disagree, are you ok with referring this to the ctte?

I was not aware of the last part of the sentence, and have fixed the
NEWS.Debian files in the exim4 package accordingly. Thanks for the
nudge to reference the docs again.

I took the opportunity to re-read developer's reference 6.3.4 and
adapted NEWS.Debian to conform to it. There was indeed an error since
I didn't remember all of 6.3.4.

As a user, I wouldn't care about source packages.

I am vetoing the same NEWS.Debian in all exim4 binary packages. Please
take this to the tech ctte, we need a clarification of the developer's
reference.

Policy is not the only thing to honor; especially since the policy
editors tend to axe change proposals.

Bug#383894: amarok: Does not work with MySQL 5.0.24

2006-08-20 Thread Johannes Adams
Hello again!

For me it worked also (even without recompiling) as long as I didn't add
songs to my collection, tried to rebuild the collection or wiped the
whole database and amarok settings and started with a new one - the
collection remained empty and no tables were created in the database.
Maybe you could try to create a new database and try to use it with
amarok. If it still works for you after this, I neither get the upstream
bug report nor why it only works for me with this patch.

Files in /etc/ are treated by dpkg as "conffiles". If they differ
between new installs and the current install you receive the message
 from apt-get/dpkg :

"File differs what do you want to do?"
"Keep old version"
"Install new version"
"show differences"

  Thats what I mean..

  Will consider your suggestion(s) later.

If I'm away for a while, my sockets in /tmp/.X11-unix get deleted by

The manpage tmpreaper(1) suggests

Bug#381181: mdadm fix affects root-on-LVM-on-RAID

2006-08-20 Thread John Gruenenfelder
Hello,

I set my system up some time ago to use root on LVM on RAID. Not just root,
actually, but all filesystems are on LVM on RAID with the exception of /boot
which is just on RAID.

With the latest update to mdadm, my system could no longer boot properly.
Before I found this bug report, I managed to trace the problem on my own.

Now that udev no longer creates the /dev/md* devices, the lvm startup script
cannot find my volume groups. Without those I am missing most of my
filesystems and cannot boot.

As a quick fix, I can boot into single user mode, create /dev/md0 and /dev/md3
(the two which I need), run /etc/init.d/lvm, and then mount my filesystems.
At that point I can continue the normal boot process.

Now, I roll my own kernel via make-kpkg and the initrd I created on my own to
get this setup working, so perhaps there is some Debian specific way of
handling this that I am not doing correctly.

So... what is the best fix for this? Is there some fix I'll need to make to
my initrd? Or will removing /etc/udev/mdadm.rules be enough to cause udev to
go back to the old behavior?

Bug#382807: Intent to NMU

2006-08-20 Thread Margarita Manterola
I came upon this problem in silky and found out that this package was in
serious need of love.

A new upstream release has been available for more than a year, and the
package was packaged as a native package, even though it was clearly
non-native.

I prepared the new upstream release, as a non-native package, fixing all
the current bugs in silky, and making sure that it complies with the
requirements of the Debian policy.

I cleaned up debian/rules, added the use of dpatch, and updated general
documentation.

It is my believe that silky now achieves release quality.

Bug#383963: dbus: hald fails to start on boot, but starts fine after

2006-08-20 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: dbus
Version: 0.62-4
Severity: important

By default, dbus installs its init script at S20. While at this level,
it would consistently fail to start hald during boot. However, if dbus
was restarted (via restart or stop/start) it would succeed in starting
the hald process. Experimentation led me to move the startup point for
dbus and I found that it works fine at S21 or higher. I know this
sounds strange, but I believe the problem lies with my system's use of
LDAP. The nscd daemon also starts at S20. If I stop nscd and then try
to restart dbus, hald fails to start. However, as long as nscd is
running hald starts fine.

This appears to be related to #379164 and #370569 potentially.

Bug#366974: wine: Builds OK with uupdate

2006-08-20 Thread Ted Percival
Package: wine
Followup-For: Bug #366974

I built wine 0.9.19 packages from the 0.9.15 packages using "uupdate"
and they built, installed, and ran fine.

All packages built fine. I didn't run lintian over the package, though,
and I only installed the libwine, wine, and wine-utils packages. They
appeared to run my apps without any regressions (and certainly with
improvements).

that's indeed a fair question, maybe python-support should not be too
clever and let 'python' be explicitely listed, even if it's *currently*
not needed.

Also note that if versionned depends are needed (like a python (>= X.Y))
it is obviously added, so that "problem" hits only arch:all packages
that do not need a specific python version...

Maybe Joss will have more insight about that.

Pierre Habouzit <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

> python-support is written in python (same is true for python-central)
> and will *always* depend upon 'python'

Maybe some examples to illustrate will help. It may not be entirely clear
why the above statement doesn't actually resolve the problem.

Suppose that, due to some changes to how byte-compiling is done for Python
3.0, it's necessary to write the script in python-support to require
Python 3.0. It therefore might depend on python3.0 instead of python, and
hence wouldn't cause a /usr/bin/python to be installed.

Suppose that with Python 4.0, the python-support script, still written in
Python, makes sense to distribute as an executable compiled to native code
and therefore depending on Python libraries but not needing an interpreter
at all.

You can decide that installing python-support is a way to get a
/usr/bin/python interpreter, but there's no inherent reason why this
should be the case. Furthermore, I don't think that's actually the right
approach. It adds complexity to dependency analysis without really
gaining anything.

Let me turn this around: what advantage is there to the current approach?
Why would you ever want a package containing a Python script to depend on
python-support and *not* python? Is this just saving eight bytes in the
Depends field, and if so, is that really worth it for, say, not being able
to locate all packages that depend on Python by simply looking for
packages that depend on Python (rather than having to also factor in
packages that use transitive dependencies)?

JFTR, the bug is solely in python-support, and not in the package
lacking the dependency: although not advertised in the description
(which is user-oriented), python-support also takes care at build time
of generating a list of needed dependencies and placing it in the
${python:Depends} substvar.

With this, it's reasonable to expect for it to provide a correct list of
such dependencies, which should include "python" for packages shiping
scripts invoking /usr/bin/python.

Bug#379245: heimdal & KCM

2006-08-20 Thread Brian May
Hello,

I have been requested to add KCM to the Debian packages - see bug #379245.

Based on my limited understanding, KCM is a system wide daemon that
keeps track of user's Kerberos tickets, in memory, so they don't need
to be stored in /tmp.

This presumably means an /etc/init.d/* script will be required to
start the daemon at boot.

I have several options, and I am not sure which one to use:

* include it in heimdal-servers.
Pros: It is a server, natural choice.
Cons: heimdal-servers conflicts with many other packages.

* include it in heimdal-clients.
Pros: presumably everyone who installs heimdal-clients will probably
want KCM, as it appears to be so much better then using /tmp.
Might make it easier to have Debian package use KCM by default.
  Cons: ???

* create heimdal-kcm package.
  Pros: very flexible.
Cons: users may not realise it exists.

I haven't investigated yet how to make KCM be used by default (I think
standard upstream might require setting an environment variable).

I am also not aware if KCM breaks compatibility with the MIT Kerberos
libraries or not.

Any suggestions?

This is something I would like to get right first go ;-).

Thanks.

Bug#383960: RM: netkit-base; abandoned, obsolete, no reverse dependencies

2006-08-20 Thread Roger Leigh
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Please could you remove netkit-base (netkit-inetd, netkit-ping) from
unstable (and testing once this is possible)?

netkid-base is:

* abandoned upstream for many years
* unmaintained in Debian for two years
* does not build from unpatched upstream source
* upstream source is of poor quality
* it will never support IPv6
* netkit-inetd is superceded in testing and unstable by openbsd-inetd
* netkit-inetd now has no reverse dependencies (other than an alternative
depends in ltsp-server, which is being dealt with; this should not
prevent removal. See #382681 for more detail).
* netkit-ping has three reverse dependencies (mrtg-ping-probe,
heartbeat, heartbeat-2) but all are alternative dependencies. I will
be filing bugs against these three packages, but all allow
  iputils-ping as the alternative.

Regards,
Roger

Bug#383958: lintian: python-script-but-no-python-dep error with python-support

I don't think I agree with this.

python-support is a package that, at least according to its long
description, says that it provides a script that byte-compiles Python
modules. Nothing in the description of the package says that it provides
a Python interpreter. It happens to do so *now* because of its
dependencies, but suppose there were some reason down the road why it
might depend on some specific version of Python that didn't provide the
/usr/bin/python interpreter or otherwise changes its functionality in some
way.

Please don't rely on transitive dependencies. It's just a lurking bug
waiting to happen. Your package contains a Python script which requires a
Python interpreter. It should therefore depend on the package that
provides the Python interpreter. Unless python-support is defined to
provide a Python interpreter, it's not the correct package to depend on
for that purpose.

In general, for every interface, system service, or binary that your
package uses, you should depend directly on the package that provides that
interface, system service, or binary unless that package is essential, and
not assume that some other dependency will provide it for you. Time and
again, transitions in Debian have proven that such assumptions break over
time and suddenly make packages RC-buggy. Yes, sometimes it's very
unlikely that such a transition will happen, but I think it's better as a
general rule to be sure.

If it's really the intention that python-support will always provide a
Python interpreter, that should be added to its long description so that
there's documentation that this is an invariant and a promise that won't
be changed later.

Yes. As soon as I run that (from ssh elsewhere :) ), the local keyboard
and mouse stop working. As soon as I start it, it starts working again.

That sounds like a good idea to me. Should I clone this bug against those
packages? I'd rather see them pick up that check before lintian drops

Bug#383201: downgrading severity

2006-08-20 Thread Martín Ferrari

severity 383201 important
thanks

Hi, I'm assigning severity important to this bug, as I think very few
people could be affected by it, as it was only one day in the archive
and never reached testing, so it could not affect etch's release.
Besides, scrollkeeper has a monthly cronjob to rebuild its database.
And finally, if this required for tomboy, the same should happen with
gnome-commander which had this same bug for more time.

Or at least until there's a specification for the clilibs file in the CLI
policy, which would probably be enough.

Thanks!

Bug#383956: Small patch

2006-08-20 Thread Damián Viano
There is a typo that probably worked previously due to the different
behaviour of cmake, changing the $(streamindex_LIBS) for
${streamindex_LIBS} in src/streamindexer/CMakeLists.txt seems to fix the
FTBFS, I'd provide a patch but I'm having problems with cdbs, so I'll
leave it to you to patch it.

Note that debian/patches/12_shared_streamindexer.diff would probably
have to be regenerated since include that line in the context of another
change.

Hope to help,

Bug#383870: fetchmail: Fetchmail duplicates my SPAM every 10 minutes - ARGH!

2006-08-20 Thread Matthias Andree
(demoting to serious, tagging upstream, retitling)

Additional info:

fetchmail 6.3.4 and older do NOT log out of the upstream server after
SIGPIPE (I don't know the rationale behind this - it's not in the
comments), which prevents the deletions from happening properly.
Retitling the bug accordingly.

Workarounds:

- have your upstream reject spam with improperly formatted envelopes,
these should be rejected in the first SMTP dialogue

- do not use multidrop with wildcard ("*"), but list allowed local
accounts explicitly (since the bogus address will not match, the
message will be forwarded to the postmaster address, which is under
your control, and can also be empty to discard the message - this will
  prevent Exim from hanging up).

- set expunge 10 (fetchmail will send QUIT after 10 messages and
reconnect, to make deletions effective and limit
   the amount of refetching).

Fix: block SIGPIPE; the SIGPIPE handler was wrong from the moment it was
coded as it uses longjmp() which isn't safe in signal handlers.
Functions that write to broken pipes will still report errors, but
fetchmail won't corrupt internal state or defeat the logout.

Patch attached. BEWARE: it is NOT run-time tested,
I'm not fetching from multidrop accounts.

Nico/Héctor, can we provide an inofficial package to Helge with the
patch below to ask feedback if the fix is complete? It shouldn't matter
if it's i386 rather than x86_64.

Rationale for severity demotion: Since the breakage is partially induced
by configuration and for instance works properly for singledrop, I don't
think "grave" is justified. Perhaps further demotion to "important" is
in order, but I'm not the Debian maintainer to remove the "unsuitable
for release" tag that is attached to critical/grave/serious severities.

Bug#383822: better location for the user defined role.d directory

2006-08-20 Thread Henning Sprang

On 8/19/06, Steve Kemp <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

> I don't think this is a good idea to place user/admin-edited data there.
> Something in /var or /etc/xen-tools would be a better place for these, I
> think.

Honestly I'd kinda agree, but in the past I found there were problems
with having things in /etc. Merge conflicts due to CVS identifiers,
 etc.

I don't understand that. This is about the way how you manage the
xen-tools sources, right? I worked with CVS but no idea what placement
of a directory in my software can lead to merge conflicts.

Since the roles and scripts generally, are arch-independant and
not generally user-editable it makes sense to keep them where they are.

I cannot agree, at least not for the place where the roles script
admins write on their own are stored. I am even not sure if it is
probably against policy.

I understand it is not easy to find a good place, because you have
here a directory
where user editable stuff and package-provided files are mixed together.
Like, in debian.d/roles.d are already some files, but the idea is that the user
can add his own - then you'd have (apart from your CVS things, which I
didn't understand) them mixed up.

I think the package-provided files should kept where they are. But
there should be also an additional place for the user's role scripts.

Why not, in _addition_ to searching in
/usr/lib/xen-tools/$dist.d/roles.d also try to
find /etc/xen-tools/$dist.d/roles.d or /var/xen-tools/$dist.d/roles.d/
and look for role
scripts?
(also, users could add distribution-generic scripts as well in such a
structure!)

maybe they should be searched both before running them, so I can
overwrite/extend package-provided rols scripts with my own -
user-provided script wins and replaces a package-provided one with the
same name.

I could perhaps create symlinks from /etc/xen-tools to matcH:

/etc/xen-tools/debian-hooks.d/ -> /usr/lib/xen-tools/debian.d/roles

  etc.

However I'm not sure that improves the situation very much.

as there are already role scripts available, this would be
bad/complicated, also - you need to link every single file, not the
directory - managing this is ugly.

Maybe you should discuss that on debian-policy(AFAIK there is such a
list) they can help with such things like where to place which file or
directory, also in terms of the policy.

Having just one role directory doesn't really work so well since it
is possible that multiple distributions might need different scripts
to do a job - it would be unfair to have to expect a role-writer to
have to code their script for all distributions, or test for it.

only one role directory wasn't my idea, I just don't like the location.

But when I think about it, also a single user-editable role dir (at a
good location like /etc/ or /var ) is not bad:
- everybody who only has one distrbution wouldn't care.
- everybody using multiple distribution, which are similar, can simply
re-use scripts
- everybody using multiple different distributions, just gives his
scripts different names. I can have a centos-webserver and a
debian-webserver role, for example - I have to call xen-create-image
with the right role.
as this would be redundant (e.g. xen-create-image --dist dapper --role
dapper-webserver), someone who needs this often will start writing
case decisions in his role scripts, like you propose.

What do you think? (did I explain that clearly?)

Henning

Well, Exim's error before it just drops the connection isn't selling
fetchmail a hint that there's no progress beyond that point.

The question is: why does fetchmail not skip over the offending
messages? It may or may not try to bounce them, depending on your
configuration, but should mark them refused - as seen in "..flushed".

But what exactly happens is a matter of your configuration.

Please show your fetchmailrc file and the output of
/etc/init.d/fetchmail debug-run
up to the error.

Remember to restart fetchmail afterwards with /etc/init.d/fetchmail start

Package: initramfs-tools

the ip= option turned out to be the easiest one. attached are two patches
that implement:

nfsroot=[:][,]

ip=::

ip=""

ip="dhcp"

i didn't implement ip=rarp or ip=bootp, though i get the impression dhcp
can mimic bootp, and could possible used as an alias to dhcp.

i would say, with these patches applied, this bug could be closed.

of course, patches also available in bzr branch:

Committed and new file added. Patch sent to Daniel Burrows.

Daniel (Burrows), can you triple check that your public copy is synced with your
local copy ?

When syncing with your public copy, I dont get any update and when I
run "darcs send" I'm always prompted to send the old patches I already
sent to you. I have 14 of them now..:-)

Bug#383958: lintian: python-script-but-no-python-dep error with python-support

2006-08-20 Thread Cameron Dale
Package: lintian
Version: 1.23.22
Severity: wishlist

Lintian generates python-script-but-no-python-dep errors for
binary packages depending on python-support (which depends on
python). These dependencies are sufficient and are generated
automatically by the dh_pysupport debhelper script.

I asked on debian-python and they said this was a bug in
lintian and not in python-support:

Bug#383829: moreinfo

2006-08-20 Thread Damián Viano
Ok, I've been looking this for a while now and I'm not sure what to do.
The problem is that cmake changed the way it links binaries between 2.2
and 2.4, before the linking line was directly included in the Makefiles,
like:

mod_xmlrpc.so: CMakeFiles/mod_xmlrpc.dir/build.make
@echo "Linking C shared library mod_xmlrpc.so"
$(CMAKE_COMMAND) -E remove -f libmod_xmlrpc.a mod_xmlrpc.so
gcc -fPIC `/usr/bin/xmlrpc-c-config --libs` `/usr/bin/apr-config
--libs` `/usr/bin/apxs2 -q LDFLAGS` -lpthread -ldl -lcrypt -lm -lc -lruby1.8
-shared -Wl,-soname,mod_xmlrpc.so -o mod_xmlrpc.so $(mod_xmlrpc_OBJECTS)
$(mod_xmlrpc_EXTERNAL_OBJECTS)

while 2.4 does it like:

mod_xmlrpc.so: CMakeFiles/mod_xmlrpc.dir/build.make
@$(CMAKE_COMMAND) -E cmake_echo_color --switch=$(COLOR) --red --bold
"Linking C shared library mod_xmlrpc.so"
$(CMAKE_COMMAND) -P CMakeFiles/mod_xmlrpc.dir/cmake_clean_target.cmake
$(CMAKE_COMMAND) -E cmake_link_script
CMakeFiles/mod_xmlrpc.dir/link.txt --verbose=$(VERBOSE)

and link.txt contains:

/usr/bin/gcc -fPIC -DSUPPORT_C `/usr/bin/xmlrpc-c-config --cflags`
`/usr/bin/apr-config --cflags` -I`/usr/bin/apr-config --includedir`
`/usr/bin/apxs2 -q CFLAGS` -I`/usr/bin/apxs2 -q INCLUDEDIR` -Wall -g
-fno-strict-aliasing -O2 -fPIC -I/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/i486-linux -DSUPPORT_RUBY
`/usr/bin/xmlrpc-c-config --libs` `/usr/bin/apr-config --libs` `/usr/bin/apxs2
-q LDFLAGS` -lpthread -ldl -lcrypt -lm -lc -lruby1.8 -shared
-Wl,-soname,mod_xmlrpc.so -o mod_xmlrpc.so
"CMakeFiles/mod_xmlrpc.dir/mod_xmlrpc.o"
"CMakeFiles/mod_xmlrpc.dir/mod_xmlrpc_c.o"
"CMakeFiles/mod_xmlrpc.dir/mod_xmlrpc_rb.o"
"CMakeFiles/mod_xmlrpc.dir/mod_xmlrpc_server.o"

The problem lays in that Makefile lines are interpreted by a shell while cmake
directly exec them. Wether this change in the behaviour of cmake is a bug or
not I'll leave it to the maintainer to figure it out, because you probably
shouldn't depend on that on rules of a 'cross-platform make'.

Meanwhile I tested to compile every cmake build-rdep with 2.4 and found
this:
boson 0
cableswig 0
gccxml 0
libapache2-mod-xmlrpc2 100
octaviz 0
strigi 100
strigiapplet 0
vtk 100
yodl 0

Both strigi and libapache2-mod-xmlrpc2 seems broken by this change, the vtk
problem doesn't seem related. I have patches for those two bugs and will be
filling bugs with patches for them.

Damián(Des).

My impression, which I think I got from an earlier apt-listchanges
maintainer, is that NEWS.Debian is supposed to have individual entries
in the same format as changelog.Debian. Whether that implies "*" I'm
not sure; whether this is just a little secret or part of policy I'm
not sure.

As a practical matter, if the NEWS.Debian files don't work with
apt-listchanges, a lot of people will miss the NEWS. In the
short-run, this seems a pretty good argument for working with
apt-listchanges as it exists.

Also, as a user I expect that all binaries with the same source will
have the same NEWS.Debian, so I won't necessarily check the separate
NEWS.Debian. If others are like me, it means the NEWS may escape
human as well as automatic tools.

In the longer-run, apt-listchanges, package maintainers, and policy
should all agree on what the deal is (format of NEWS.Debian and
relation between packages from the same source). Since #383803 has
been set to wishlist severity, it seems the apt-listchanges maintainer
does not agree the current behavior is a bug.

To repeat, I'm not sure my diagnosis of the problem (apt-listchanges
requires all packages with the same source to have the same
NEWS.Debian) is correct. There is at least one competing explanation
(missing "*") which has the same character, namely is it an exim
problem or an apt-listchanges problem?

Bug#383953: xkb-data: Keyboard layout Asus 6000 series laptop not supported

2006-08-20 Thread Arnout Boelens
Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.8-7
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

Because the keyboard layout of my laptop (Asus 6000) currently is not supported,
I made a new entry in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet. Because I figured it can
be usefull for others too, here it is:

// Asus

// Asus A6000 series Keyboard
partial alphanumeric_keys
xkb_symbols "asus_6000" {
  key    {       [ XF86AudioMute         ]       };
  key    {       [ XF86AudioLowerVolume  ]       };
  key    {       [ XF86AudioRaiseVolume  ]       };
  key    {       [ XF86Mail              ]       };
  key    {       [ XF86WWW               ]       };
  key    {       [ XF86AudioPrev         ]       };
  key    {       [ XF86AudioNext         ]       };
  key    {       [ XF86AudioStop         ]       };
  key    {       [ XF86AudioPlay         ]       };
};

I has, of course, also to be added in:

rules/xfree86, xfree86.lst and xfree86.xml.

Cheers,

"aa" is really ambiguous, since it could also mean, for example,
"anti-aliased".

Why not name it astronomical-almanac?

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
are mud people.
However, that "common sense" is obviously wrong.

Bug#383888: vtk failed to build from sources

OK,
I have just successfully built vtk 5.0.1
in a pbuilder environment.

Perhaps you were trying vtk 4.4.2 and filed
a duplicate of bug #379240? Your bug report
doesn't say, but since 5.0.1 is still new,
I am guessing that you saw the bug on version
4.4.2-10.

vtk 5.0.1-1 is making use of dh_python, and
it and mayavi_1.5-2 have been seen running
correctly with python2.4 as the default python.

There may be additional refinements to improve
python policy compliance, but I have uploaded
vtk_5.0.1-1 and mayavi_1.5-2 to support the
transition to python2.4 as default.

even more reason to change it. I think it should be only a line or two

Bug#383949: anjuta: can not add a new source file in a wizard project

2006-08-20 Thread David Robin
Package: anjuta
Version: 1:1.2.4a-4
Severity: normal

Hi,

It seems impossible to add a new C source or header in a current project.
I tried various test sequences, trying to add C source/include files,
to a console/gtk2/glade project, in the src directories or in the project root.

No warning or error is issued, but the expected new file is simply never created
on the disk or added to the project.

I checked the basics like low diskspace or right permissions, but did not
notice anything wrong.

Best Regards,
David Robin.

Well, I suppose that Frans will not enter a BTS fight here, but what
you describe above is for stuff that can be judged as reasonable by
the relevant maintainer.

Here, Frans, as D-I release manager made the judgement call that
adding a clock to D-I is not really in the top priority list of things
he would like the team give its time to.

So, of course, we can keep the suggestion opened in case one of us
judges (s)he has enough time to waste on thisbut it is s
improbable that just putting the suggestion aside is acceptable.

Another option is, of course, in case you judge this important enough
for you, to implement it and then collaborate to the D-I development
effort.

Thanks, I have already noticed it. I reached a point now that I cannot
debug further by uploading new versions of the package and looking at the
autobuilder log. I think I need access to an amd64 system. Do you now
the simplest way of getting this?

You can check for the location of the ctrl_interface domain socket (that may
be in a different location according to config file used) or pidfile (which
is what the wpa-ifupdown init script/hack uses to identify interfaces bound
by wpa_supplicant/wpa_cli, and it is a fixed location).

Is this a workaround for #383168? If so, my current kludge is to have the
suspend manager, in my case it was hibernate but now it is powersave, stop
the wpa-ifupdown service on suspend.

Thanks, Kel.

Bug#383950: Should work out-of-the-box with no configuration

2006-08-20 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: libpam-ssh
Version: 1.91.0-9.1
Severity: wishlist

libpam-ssh should work out-of-the box, without requiring manual PAM
configuration. By default, immediately after installing libpam-ssh, if
a user logs in and their password also unlocks their SSH key(s),
libpam-ssh should start an ssh-agent with the unlocked key(s).

I currently use the following configuration, which accomplishes this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /etc/pam.d/pam-ssh-auth
auth optional pam_ssh.so use_first_pass
keyfiles=id_dsa,id_rsa,identity,id_dsa1,id_dsa2,id_dsa3

session optional pam_ssh.so
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ grep -C2 pam-ssh /etc/pam.d/*
/etc/pam.d/gdm-auth requiredpam_env.so

/etc/pam.d/[EMAIL PROTECTED] common-account
/etc/pam.d/gdm-session requiredpam_limits.so
/etc/pam.d/[EMAIL PROTECTED] common-session
/etc/pam.d/gdm:@include pam-ssh-session
/etc/pam.d/[EMAIL PROTECTED] common-password
--
/etc/pam.d/[EMAIL PROTECTED] common-auth
/etc/pam.d/login-
/etc/pam.d/login:# Allow pam-ssh to use the password as SSH passphrase
/etc/pam.d/login:@include pam-ssh-auth
/etc/pam.d/login-
/etc/pam.d/login-# This allows certain extra groups to be granted to a user
--
/etc/pam.d/login-sessionrequired pam_limits.so
/etc/pam.d/login-
/etc/pam.d/login:# Let pam-ssh start an agent
/etc/pam.d/login:@include pam-ssh-session
/etc/pam.d/login-
/etc/pam.d/login-# Prints the last login info upon succesful login

I realize that the program-centric PAM configuration mechanism makes
this rather difficult, due to the inability to edit other programs' PAM
configurations. If PAM had a more generalized version of the pam.d
mechanism, the various interactive login programs like gdm and login
could do something like "@include.d interactive-auth.d" and "@include.d
interactive-session.d", and pam-ssh could drop a file in that directory.
Alternatively, if PAM will silently ignore an @include of a
non-existent file, these interactive login programs could always
@include the pam-ssh files in appropriate places by default, though that
would special-case libpam-ssh rather than solving the general problem.

Bug#314802: merging + patch

I've created a patch which uses $GTK2_RC_FILES on startup of kde to
point to a special gtkrc-2.0-kde file. This will a) lead to independent
configurations of the themes in KDE and GNOME and b) leave users .bashrc
alone.

The patch is attached below (if you want to test) and sent to upstream.

Cheers,

And #201. Its a pretty old, known issue. I've made a few attempts at looking
at it with no result so far. Will make another effort soon, but I cannot
promise that anything can be fixed in a driver that is partially opaque.

Yep, it is a regression that is biting me too, although most good suspend
managers (ie powersave) hide it quite well by automating module removal and
reinsertion, however this will require the networking system(s) to be
restarted, which is no good . . .

Thanks, Kel.

Bug#383943: dfsbuild v0.99.0 breaks when package nfs-common is used

2006-08-20 Thread Sascha Wüstemann
Package: dfsbuild
Version: v0.99.0

When adding nfs-common or nfs-kernel-server which implies nfs-common,
the dfsbuild process breaks and does not finalize.

When the package install process reaches at an early state installing
nfs-common, the startscipt of nfs-common is executed that depends on
the existence of /etc/fstab which does not exist. Then the start-up
script fails which causes the dfsbuild process to stop.

The solution is simple. Just touching target/etc/fstab as soon as
target/etc is created to place an empty file there lets the nfs-common
starup script finish succesfully and does not harm the dfsbuild process
anymore.

Can you verify that and implement this to the next dfsbuild version?

I am using debian testing/unstable GNU/Linux 2.6, Kernel v2.6.8-2-386
and libc6 v2.3.6-15.

Bug#362064: udev: udev tries to write to an installed, working initrd without asking

you use an plural, which is wrong.
initramfs-tools updates the newest one only.
it has been doing so since day 1 in the archive.

aren't tomorrow dailies based on 2.6.17, but that is offtopic..

the package postinstall explicitly tells what it does:
# update-initramfs -u
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-2-686

so it can only have been overlooked.

oldstyle initrd-tools and yaird do this,
but they don't have any possiblity to have hooks for other packages.

Bug#383321: su-to-root => localisation ;-)

2006-08-20 Thread Christian Perrier

There are several glitches here and there with regard to i18n:

> usage() {
> GT1=$(gettext 'usage')
> GT2=$(gettext 'user')
> GT3=$(gettext 'command')
> GT4=$(gettext 'command is a X11 program')

> echo "-X: ${GT4}" >&2
> exit 1

This makes a few assumptions about the languages syntax. Indeed,
concatenating strings to rebuild sentences is generally a bad idea in
i18n programs as various languages can have various syntax.

Here, for instance, the French l10n team generally uses "Syntaxe : "
as prefix to "usage" lines. Notices the non breakable space before the
colon

So, indeed, you should just use *one* string for the whole string to
be translated.

Ditto for the "-X: command is a X11 program" string

I'm not sure how to do it in shell programming, but this anyway
doesn't scale very well to other languages. The locale information
should be used here (the Yes/No shortcuts are part of locale
filesI'm however not aware of the exact way to use them).

Any French translation should get a review by the French l10n team
(I'd recommend the same for the German translation). The fr.po file
you provided should not be used as Bill will certainly see it by
himself...

Bug#383715: [pkg-horde] Bug#383715: Can't login to imp4 with imap, although horde works fine.

I have looked at the configuration and it seems to be just fine.

My thought exactly :-)

The only difference from my setup is the following:
* You use localhost as imap host in config files.

Yep. And localhost is working.

* You have set up maildomain = 'xxx.tld' and smtphost='xxx.tld'.
Is tld the ending you want?

It's actually a different domain, but i changed it for privacy reasons :-)

* You use uw-imapd and I use courier.

yep, that's a difference

So what you need to make sure is:
* That access to imaps (ssl enabled imap) is allowed from localhost to
localhost. Do you have thunderbird located locally?

Yep, and both using localhost and using a FQDN works flawlessly using SSL.
That's the strange thing: i can use thunderbird without a problem and i
can easily login to horde, while using the same imap-server and the same
credentials

What you can try while searching for the problem:
0) Look into the logs for horde and uw-imap.
1) Enable logging, and look into the logs.

horde-logs don't add much useful info, but uw-imapd-logs say

Aug 20 23:33:00 iluvatar imapd[21803]: connect from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)
Aug 20 23:33:00 iluvatar imapd[21804]: connect from 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)

So definetely a double connect on submit ...

2) Check if imap withous ssl works.
same symtoms: long wait (1 minute, i would say) and then i get
an (empty) redirect.php :-(

3) Change from uw-imap to courier (or some other imap daemon).
i've just tried dovecot (which totally doesn't work :-), but i'll try
something like courier/cyrus later this week, although i doubt that's
where the problem is

I'll also try to find where in the code the login-process starts to 'hang'
to get a better picture of what's going on

Update later this week (i hope) :-)

grtz,
Taco.

Yes, "Tut mir leid." can/should be used for this. But only a minor
difference imho.
