This looks a bit more reliable to me. I don't think there are so many cases to list, and this is easier to adapt if e.g. pdfTeX has his own \pdfTeX command that does a better formatting than pdf\TeX. I agree. Except that I think that we can assume that a TeXstring with a hyphen after it can also be replaced always: (^|[[:space:]])TeX(-|[[:space:]]|$) at least until we find that it causes an error (a hyphen in front *and* after TeX gives a false positive, the filename Debian-TeX-Policy). Bug#413449: tex-common: minor issues in section 2.1 of TeX-on-Debian.pdf
Frank Küster [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I agree. This would probably be OK in most cases, yes. OTOH, I don't see many English words such as TeX-related that would benefit from such a treatment. So, this would mostly apply to words like TeX-XeT, which would probably benefit from a special case anyway (replacing them with their own command). BTW: I forgot to write it in my previous mail, but the regexes I proposed are valid with sed *provided* we use its -r option (aka --regexp-extended). Regards, -- Florent
Bug#390496: Please support textures that are not powers of two

It would probably be a better idea to teach compiz/beryl to use regular POT textures then to use software NPOT textures. POT textures would be wasteful memory-wise, but but should work fine. Then, upstream bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9077 got reported about teaching compiz to work with power-of-two textures only. This is beyond the control of compiz/beryl as the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap spec mandates that the texture target be strictly derived from the pixmaps dimensions. Any possible workaround would probably have to be in the X server. Note that the lack of NPOT support means that up to almost 4 times as much texture memory is required, and the machines that lack NPOT support will tend not to have plenty of resources to begin with, so I'm afraid this is just never gonna really fly on that kind of hardware. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer | http://tungstengraphics.com Libre software enthusiast | Debian, X and DRI developer

Bug#414515: cups or kernel
Hi, I made this bugreport by thinking that the problem is cups or the package cupsys. After my recherches it could be that this is a kernel-problem. See: Background: As far as I could see (strace, usbmon), the Kyocera FS-820 answers to ID requests only a few seconds after plugging it in. Sigh. Ok, after the second pair of bugs in a row about this, I had a closer look at the problem. Somehow, the sid-tagged RC bugs on these packages showed up on the release team's radar, and the sid-only versions were incorrectly hinted into testing. I'm sorry we've made extra work for you, John. Would you be willing to re-upload the previous versions of arch2darcs and srcinst to testing-proposed-updates so that we can resolve these bugs? Unfortunately the new uploads also need to have newer version numbers than the versions currently present, so an epoch might be needed. :/ -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Bug#414569: Reverse lookup for said host is not set up
Hello! Reverse lookup for said the host in the strace - our ldap server - is not set up. [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ host 172.21.242.9 Host 9.242.21.172.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) It tells so immediately. To my knowledge there is no strict requirement that an LDAP or any other hosts in a local network needs a reverse lookup set up. I imagine there may be lots of networks where reverse lookup is not defined for some hosts, my network at home doesn't even have a DNS server. At least I do not get whether avahi tries to find out about the same IP address again and again. Since the workstation uses LDAP I think that IP reverse lookup for that IP address is queried for very often. The strace ssh case was repeatable after a second. It shouldn't try to find out about that IP address that often IMHO. If it isn't known it should wait some time before it tries again. That would be an avahi-daemon issue. Added to that I would be more reluctant to add an option to nsswitch that delays reverse lookups where the DNS server returns not found in a fraction of a second by 5 seconds or more. Its the postinst script of the package libnss-mdns that does it: - perl -i -pe ' sub insert { # this also splits on tab my @bits=split( , shift); # do not break configuration if the hosts line already references # mdns if (grep { $_ eq mdns4_minimal || $_ eq mdns4 || $_ eq mdns || $_ eq mdns_minimal || $_ eq mdns6 || $_ eq mdns6_minimal} @bits) { return join , @bits; } # change dns into mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 return join , map { $_ eq dns ? (mdns4_minimal,[NOTFOUND=return], $_,mdns4) : $_ } @bits; } s/^(hosts:\s+)(.*)/$1.insert($2)/e; ' /etc/nsswitch.conf - I cannot remember that it asked me whether I like to do these changes. It maybe tries to do these changes again when the package is updated. I recommend that mdns4_minimal is added by default - I doesn't create the timeout as I tested today -, but mdns4 after dns lookup is not without asking the user first. That would be a libnss-mdns issue. About NFS I agree with you, it likely wasn't NFS, it was the LDAP lookups and possibly other server IP address reverse lookups I think. They are *not* created under /tmp (unless somebody defines $WORKDIR when building Tiger to point there, which the Debian packages does not do) Moreover: $ ls -ld /var/*/tiger drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 16384 2007-03-13 00:01 /var/log/tiger drwx-- 3 root root 4096 2006-08-30 14:18 /var/run/tiger So none of the temporary directories are writable by a user who is *not* root already. If you find an instance of safe_temp() that gets used outside this feel free to reopen the bug. But right now your claim is bogus. Safe_temp could be improved so it would place files in $WORKDIR if they are given as relative (and not absolute) but right now no modules do this. Alright, the context of safe_temp use does in fact look safe. Thanks Justin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#414686: ITP: limpam-otpw -- A one-time password system for PAM
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Package name: libpam-otpw Version : Upstream Author : Markus Kuhn * URL : http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/download/otpw-1.3.tar.gz * License : GPL2 Description : A One-time password system for PAM-compatible login programs. The OTPW package consists of the one-time-password generator otpw-gen plus two verification routines otpw_prepare() and otpw_verify() that can easily be added to programs such as login or ftpd on POSIX systems. For platforms that support the Pluggable Authentication Method (PAM) interface, a suitable wrapper is included as well. Login software extended this way will allow reasonably secure user authentication over insecure network lines. The user carries a password list on paper. The scheme is designed to be robust against theft of the paper list and race-for-the-last-letter attacks. Cryptographic hash values of the one-time passwords are stored for verification in the user’s home directory. See http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/otpw.html for more details and why OTPW is superior to alternative OTP schemes such as OPIE. -- Matthew Johnson signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#414687: impossible to use tcp server mode w/o races
Package: qemu Version: 0.9.0-1 Severity: normal It does not seem to be possible to make qemu export its monitor or serial console over tcp, when qemu is the server, and connect to it both robustly and without races. Here's one attempt: client_program qemu -serial tcp::port,server In this mode, qemu blocks at startup until a connection is made to the serial port. So the program that will be connecting needs to already be running and polling the port. But this is bad, since the client program presumably needs to give up at some point if it fails to connect, in case qemu never starts. And if it gives up too early, qemu will be left running. Another attempt: qemu -serial tcp::port,server client_program There's a huge race here, the client program needs to wait for qemu to start listening. And if it fails to connect after a while, it needs to give up in case qemu isn't starting, but if it gives up too soon, qemu is left running. Another: qemu -daemonize -serial tcp::port,server,nowait client_program The nowait option seems like the solution. Except that there's a new race: the client_program might take too long to start, and qemu will be booting in the background in the meantime, so the client program might not be able to access the whole boot process. What qemu needs is a way to make it start listening to the port, then daemonise, and then block until it gets a connection. (This is the point where you tell me the simple, robust, and race-free way to accomplish this that I've been missing. ;-) -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages qemu depends on: ii bochsbios 2.3-2BIOS for the Bochs emulator ii libasound2 1.0.13-2 ALSA library ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libncurses5 5.5-5Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libsdl1.2debian 1.2.11-8 Simple DirectMedia Layer ii openhackware0.4.1-2 OpenFirmware emulator for PowerPC ii proll 18-2 JavaStation PROM 2.x compatible re ii vgabios 0.6a-1 VGA BIOS software for the Bochs an ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-13 compression library - runtime Versions of packages qemu recommends: ii debootstrap 0.3.3.2Bootstrap a basic Debian system ii sharutils 1:4.2.1-15 shar, unshar, uuencode, uudecode pn vde2 none (no description available) -- no debconf information -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#414690: package description amendment for greater clarity
Package: linux-image-2.6-686 Version: 2.6.18+6 The package description (and similarly that of linux-image-2.6-686-bigmem, linux-image-2.6.18-4-686, linux-image-2.6.18-4-686-bigmem packages) is this: 'Linux kernel 2.6 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4 This package depends on the latest binary image for Linux kernel 2.6 on Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium III/Pentium 4 machines.' Which kernel package do you choose if your computer just says 'Intel Xeon' or 'centrino mobile technology' on the front? I propose the package description of this and the other -686 kernel packages be reworded to this which I believe covers the architectures more clearly: 'Linux kernel 2.6 image on Intel PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4/Xeon This package depends on the latest binary image for Linux kernel 2.6 on Intel Pentium-Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium II Xeon/Pentium III/Mobile Pentium III (PIII-M)/Pentium III Xeon/Pentium 4/Mobile Pentium 4/Mobile Pentium 4 M (P4-M)/Pentium 4M/Pentium 4 Extreme Edition/Xeon (32-bit)/Xeon MP (32-bit)/Pentium M (a part of Centrino) machines.' And what about Intel Core Solo and Core Duo, is this package optimised for them?

Bug#414692: resolvconf: kills resolv.conf on initial installation plus user experience report
Package: resolvconf Version: 1.37 Severity: normal Hello, I just installed resolvconf on my desktop machine to test how it playes together with my vpnc package which recommends it. I am disappointed. The initial experience is AS CRAPPY as with the first versions, and I remember having reported it. Why? Let me demonstrate the slightly biased first user experience. I install resolvconf. Everything still works. I set no extra settings. I reboot the system the next day. Uh, what happens? All DNS is broken. I read /etc/resolv.conf and see it been suddenly shreddered. I read the contents. Nothing usefull. Reading the manpage. Nothing useful. Doing dpkg-reconfigure. Just some random blah, blah hints and nothing useful to rescue my resolv.conf contents. Why should I care about some amok running scripts? Further, your miss the point in those texts. You say facts in the beginning, followed by a long text, then the question comes in a separate window. What's the point again? Oh, I forgot already what exactly it was because the relevant part was in the beginning of the long blah-blah in the other window. You know, the short-term memory effect. But only now in the third debconf window there appears some hint about where my original file is gone. Great. And now it asks me to prepare /etc/resolv.conf or not. Good, I say NO and expect it to restore /etc/resolv.conf again. Simple logical implication. What happens? It did NOT RESTORE it. WTF? Okay, doing what the message said and removing the crap. apt-get remove resolvconf. Great, the file is restored. The systems does work again! Sorry, developers, I understand that the current program concept is ok from your developer's POV and I know that it works (I am using it vpnc, great stuff) but it sucks from (my) users point of view. And it does not work if there IS NO regular DNS data provider like dhclient feeding resolvconf after reboot, which is the case here. I need it the package for vpnc only, I install it because of the package Suggests: and I get a booby trap instead. Instead of killing the original file which has a critical sytem function! and confusing the user with messages, you better should: - tell user what exactly is happens in the terms which look important from his POV. Fscked file is fscked file. Broken DNS is broken DNS. I don't care which code beauty is behind the machinery, it has to work and tell the user that it may break and when it may break. - don't ask non-important questions first, like the one about rogue scripts. Further, you can look whether there are rogue scripts remaining on the system BEFORE asking this question. Why do you bother the user if you can check that? I am pretty sure none of the packages listed in the explanation is installed on my system. - make sure the original contents is merged into the resolv.conf contents unless some content provider actually provided one OR the users clearly decided to hide the original contents. A simple selection is enough, like: your resolv.conf file currently contains valid DNS data (see below). _placeholder_ # only the valid lines, comments weeded out . DNS data providers using resolvconf may need to replace the current file contents and add new or alternative data. However, not keeping the current data may lead to a system state where DNS will not work unless some package like DHCP client feeds resolvconf with fresh information. . What should happen with them? . [*] Use this data unless additional data is installed [ ] Use this data and merge with additional data when possible [ ] Make a backup and drop the data, use provided information only [ ] Don't use resolvconf management at all - shortly outline the problem in 5-15 words right before the question, i.e. in the SAME dialog window - Do exactly what the debconf message says and consider all cases and all implications. Prepare Foo - No! means not having the file prepared. No matter whether it is a symlink already, or not. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.20 Locale: LANG=de_DE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages resolvconf depends on: ii coreutils 5.97-5.3 The GNU core utilities ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.12 Debian configuration management sy ii lsb-base 3.1-23 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip resolvconf recommends no packages. -- debconf information: resolvconf/bad-pppoeconf-hook: * resolvconf/downup-interfaces: resolvconf/link-tail-to-original: false resolvconf/bad-pppconfig-hook: * resolvconf/linkify-resolvconf: true * resolvconf/disable-bad-hooks: true resolvconf/bad-xisp-hook: -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.

Bug#414693: tomatoes: fails to respond to SIGTERM, other issues in non-OpenGL setup
Package: tomatoes Version: 1.55-1 Severity: normal I just had a go of tomatoes. I hadn't looked at the dependencies so I didn't know it required OpenGL (I'm using the xorg nv driver, so no 3D). It changed my screen res to 640x480 or something (from 1280x960) and then made the screen black for a bit. Couldn't get a response out of it so I switched to VT1, logged in and issued killall tomatoes, unfortunately that had no effect, so I did killall -9 tomatoes. That left me with an unusably small screen. Tried starting it again and got to the startup screen, which didn't respond to me. Killed it a few more times as I tried to make it set the screen back to what I was using before by creating a config file. That didn't work (no change in res), so I resorted to xrandr from VT1, which crashed X, but that is a separate bug. So I would like to request, to allow both behaviours. I don't see it as feature. There is explicite code to skip '?' state files when copying around. Bug#414696: module package descriptions don't say you need firmware
Package: ipw2200-modules-2.6-686 Version: 2.6.18-4+etch1 All the ipw2200-modules-* package descriptions in Etch don't say that the Intel Firmware is required to get these chipsets to work, nor do they provide module version numbers, both of which would be extremely useful to know when perusing package descriptions. I suggest they instead say: The Debian 4.0/Etch 2.6.18 kernel includes version 1.1.2kmq of these modules. This is version 1.2.0mq. you only need Install this if you want this newer version of the driver than the version included in the kernel. Once installed it will be automatically used instead. To see what the difference is between versions see http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/#news. To use either version you need to download and install the Intel firmware from http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php.
Bug#414569: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#414569: Reverse lookup for said host is not set up
reassign 414569 nss-mdns thanks, On Tue, Mar 13, 2007 at 09:59:31AM +0100, Martin Steigerwald wrote: Hello! Avahi doesn't query the dns server for the reverse lookup, but uses Multicast DNS.. Because that's what avahi is, a multicast dns daemon :).. I'll ask upstream why avahi doesn't cache negative lookups for some time.. But even if it did it wouldn't really solve your problem, as the timeout will keep occuring from time to time. Its the postinst script of the package libnss-mdns that does it: I cannot remember that it asked me whether I like to do these changes. It maybe tries to do these changes again when the package is updated. Correct, it configures the system automatically for mdns to work.. I recommend that mdns4_minimal is added by default - I doesn't create the timeout as I tested today -, but mdns4 after dns lookup is not without asking the user first. That would be a libnss-mdns issue. Right, mdns4_minimal only does actual checking for certain names, that's why it doesn't time-out for you.. It's not actually doing anything. I'm reassigning this bug to nss-mdns.. I need to discuss with some others what to do about this.. Your suggestion of not adding the final mdns fallback does make sense for your network, but it will break some functionality on others.. (Where mdns can actually rev. resolv the ip because the other machine also uses mdns..) Bug#414698: libgtk2.0-0: Thai-Lao immodule does not accept any key
On 3/13/07, Loïc Minier [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Could you tell me where you do your tests? In gedit or in a pure Gtk dialog? (Gedit has some special IM hacks.) The first one I found was Epiphany URL bar. Then, it happenned with gaim message box. Keyword entry in gnome-dictionary is also affected. Gedit just crashes on start up. So, I had no chance to test it yet. So, I'm quite sure it's problem in GTK+ itself. The versions of the mentioned packages are: $ dpkg -l epiphany-browser gaim gnome-utils gedit Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name VersionDescription +++-==-==- ii epiphany-brows 2.14.3-6 Intuitive GNOME web browser ii gaim 2.0.0+beta5-11 multi-protocol instant messaging client ii gedit 2.16.2-1 light-weight text editor ii gnome-utils2.16.2-1 GNOME desktop utilities Could you attach your /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules file? I guess you mean /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodule-files.d/libgtk2.0-0.immodules The /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules file is not present in my system. -- Theppitak Karoonboonyanan http://linux.thai.net/~thep/ libgtk2.0-0.immodules Description: Binary data
Bug#414594: Cannot use Bcc: control and Version: pseudo header together
Re: Don Armstrong 2007-03-12 [EMAIL PROTECTED] It actually is, but you have to put them in the other order. [The pseudo header must come first, and it'll be marked as an error by [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is actually a variant of #389634. I still submitted it because I read the other bug as please de-deprecate close. Feel free to merge then, though. I'm personally not convinced that this is a good idea though, because you shouldn't be munging the bug in the -done message. Probably. In this case, the bug is fixed in experimental but could warrant an etch upgrade so I bumped the severity. Bug#414556: [autoconf-archive: ac_python_devel.m4 sets useless -L in PYTHON_LDFLAGS]
From http://docs.python.org/dist/module-distutils.sysconfig.html : get_python_lib( [plat_specific[, standard_lib[, prefix]]]) Return the directory for either the general or platform-dependent library installation. If plat_specific is true, the platform-dependent include directory is returned; if false or omitted, the platform-independent directory is returned. If prefix is given, it is used as either the prefix instead of PREFIX, or as the exec-prefix instead of EXEC_PREFIX if plat_specific is true. If standard_lib is true, the directory for the standard library is returned rather than the directory for the installation of third-party extensions. So maybe the fix should be calling get_python_lib(1,1) instead than w/ (0,1). On my machine they return the same thing, but depending on how you packaged python it may be the case they're different. If that doesn't fix it, afaik it's a problem packaging python, or a bug in python's distutils itself. If you want to fix it as Samuel purposed, the real fix would be to try looking for a the library in both the result of get_python_lib(0,1), w/ (1,1) and then in get_python_lib(...) + /config, and picking the first match. That would be more platform independent. Let me hear about any outcome.
