Bug#422035: qiv: newer upstream release
Package: qiv Severity: wishlist On Wed, 2007-05-02 at 23:46 +0200, Andy Spiegl wrote: Hi Bart, I am one of the co-authors of the image viewer qiv. I didn't have time to work on it for a long time but finally I got around to catch up a little. I tried to include all the debian patches and many more that have piled up in the meantime. Thanks for this announcement. Please see the file Changelog (renamed from README.NEWS) I will read that. I did NOT add the patch no_background_opts because I can't reproduce the reported bug and thought it would be a pitty to cut those features. Please let me know if the problem still exists. I agree with you that cutting out features is not the best way to fix bugs. I also included the subdir debian upstream so that it's easily possible to compile a debian package. I prefer that the debian/ subdir is not in the upstream tarball, but it is not a problem for me. I just didn't know how to deal with different versions of the control file for different distributions (sarge, etch, sid). I made symbolic links and will leave the rest up to you expert. :-) That too is not a problem for me. As an example I'll attach three different DEBs compiled on three different machines: sarge, sid, Ubuntu 6.10 I must rebuild the .deb before uploading. I'll also attach the source tarfile because I don't know when Adam will upload it to his website. (I sent it to him tonight) I will use the tarfile from the website. Please always CC me when writing to Adam Kopacz about qiv. He still is the main author but has even less time than I do. *sigh* Probably still more time than I have. :) Regards, Bart Martens -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#421986: [SPAM] - Bug#421986: ejabberd: running but not listening - Bayesian Filter detected spam
On 5/2/07, Phil Reynolds [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Package: ejabberd Version: 1.1.2-6 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Since updating my testing box today, ejabberd has been running but not listening on any of its ports. I suspect that this may be an issue with erlang rather than with ejabberd but it manifests in ejabberd. ejabberd 1.1.2-6 was built with erlang 11.b.2, and there was a change in erlang binary interfaces in between 11.b.2 and 11.b.4 (which is now in testing). erlang 1.1.2-7 is built using 11.b.4-1 but it waits for new glibc 2.5 and can't be pushed to testing now. So, either downgrade erlang (using packages from stable) or rebuild ejabberd from its source package (both 1.1.2-6 and 1.1.2-7 will work after rebuild). Bug#422037: dhcp3: Should drop debconf notes that deal with upgrades from pre-etch versions
Package: dhcp3 Severity: normal The dhcp3 package(s) use a few debconf notes to warn about changed behavior between versions. I suggest considering to drop those that deal with upgrades from versions prior to the version in etch, condidering that N+2 upgrades are not officially supported. dhcp3-server/new_auth_behavior: warns about version 3 server not being authoritative anymore. I've seen huge memory leaks in 5.2.0-10; unfortunately I wasn't able to strip the code down to a 10 liner. In my case it seemed to be caused by copying array elements from one array to another (like, but not exactly behaving like array_merge()), as in: function abc($a1, $a2) { foreach ($a2 as $var=$val) { if (!isset($a1[$var])) { $a1[$var] = $a2[$var]; } } return $a1; } And that function was called from within a directory walker. In my case this function was called ~200 times, with $a1 constantly growing up to ~50kB data. php-cli's mem usage (as reported by top) went up to 600M and finally died with OOM. Even unset()ting didn't help in my case, so I did a complete rewrite using (ugly) array references. Perhaps this helps someone tracking down the problem Kind regards Thomas
Bug#422038: tar: french manpage : ambiguous description for -m option
Package: tar Version: 1.16-2 Severity: minor Tags: l10n Option -m (--touch) is described as this in manpage in english : -m, --touch don't extract file modified time It is translated to french as : -m, --touch Ne restaure pas la date de modification du fichier restauré. The addition of the fichier restauré instead of fichier is confusing : is tthe date restored the one of the file, i.e. initial file, or the restored file : i.e. regenerated file... Well, this is not very clear, although the --touch tends to indicate that the effect would be the one of a touch command... And it could very easily be misinterpreted. I suggest removing the restauré addition from the translation. Maybe the formulation of the GNU tar manual would be preferable in the end anyway (http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/html_node/Option-Summary.html#Option-Summary) : The -m Sets the data modification time of extracted files to the extraction time, rather than the data modification time stored in the archive. Bug#418856: update-grub uses hard default for kopt_2_6 for fresh installs
On Thu, Apr 12, 2007 at 12:20:54PM +0100, Michael Clarke wrote: Package: grub Version: 0.97-27 I am currently in the process of trying to make update-grub play nicely with our configuration management system. Ideally, I would like to be able to specify xenkopt, xenhopt, kopt, etc. in /etc/default/grub, and *not* have to mess with /boot/grub/menu.lst (because it's far better for the configuration management system to manage a whole file than fight over menu.lst with other systems.) We implemented precisely that for grub2. Would you please look into our next upload that implements the /etc/default/grub you want? Bug#394132: Minor? Major?
Hi, I would consider this a major problem. I would prefer scponlyc not to require a /dev/null at all, like it used to be. Upgrading a machine from sarge to etch will currently leave all scponlyc accounts unusable and the user with no clue on how to fix it. At least some upgrade path that creates a /dev/null in all home dirs of users with scponlyc as a shell would help. And of course also have that done in setup_chroot.sh. Bug#421640: please provide unifont.hex
Robert Millan [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Uhm, for an orphaned package, I suppose I have to do this myself. Are there any rules I should take into consideration before NMUing? Basically, all maintainers are encouraged to do uploads on behalf of the QA Group, and you can treat it as a maintainer upload. I.e. no NMU diff, no point revisions (1:1.0-4 rather than 1:1.0-3.1), as many changes as you feel necessary, and new upstream versions if practical. It's customary to put QA upload in the first line of the changelog. Also, could someone please review my patch and tell me if it's ok? Perhaps a separate package would be better (unifont-source?). It would double the size of the existing package, and the vast majority of current users don't need it. It's worth mentioning in the description that the Yudit editor digs .hex fonts. You might want to check whether it accepts compressed files, and leave unifont.hex uncompressed if not. Using /usr/share/fonts seems like the right thing to me, but there aren't other packages adding their own formats there (perhaps /usr/share/unifont would be better?). yudit-common has /usr/share/yudit/fonts/yudit.hex, so I'd go for /usr/share/unifont. I assume that both of these need special configs to use sudo for obtaining root. That code should work for us. xfce4-session will prompt for the password when you try to reboot/shutdown so the: echo $USER ALL=(ALL) ALL $ROOT/etc/sudoers bit will suffice. thunar uses hal voodoo for mounting random filesystems etc (via exo-mount) so that bit is taken care of. Bug#421893: libtag unnecessarily opens files read-write which fails on read-only smb shares
Hello Scott, That would also require an API change that would break all existing applications. But there is already a workaround in the SVN version (it just tries the fopen() call directly and sees if it succeeds). -Scott thanks for your answer. I see the problem, I only had a (maybe irrational) concern to open something read-write which should in most cases only be read. By the way: The documentation to File::writeBlock says If the file is currently only opened read only -- i.e. readOnly() returns true -- this attempts to reopen the file in read/write mode. I think, it would be a good compromise to open a file read-only in the constructor and only reopen it read-write when calling modifying functions. Unfortunately File::writeBlock is not implemented as the comment implies. But as said above this is maybe not an issue as the time of last modification seems not to be changed as long as there is no real write access. Now I replaced in file taglib/toolkit/tfile.cpp: File::File(const char *file) { d = new FilePrivate(::strdup(file)); d-readOnly = !isWritable(file); d-file = fopen(file, d-readOnly ? r : r+); if(!d-file) debug(Could not open file + String(file)); } with this version from svn: File::File(const char *file) { d = new FilePrivate(::strdup(file)); // First try with read/write mode, if that fails, fall back to read only. // We can't use ::access() since that works in odd ways on some file systems. d-file = fopen(file, rb+); if(d-file) d-readOnly = false; else d-file = fopen(file,rb); if(!d-file) debug(Could not open file + String(file)); } Indexing the files on the samba share now works perfectly. Maybe this fix could be included in Debian, Christopher? Many thanks again and best regards Stefan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#421926: man page refers to non-existent rolorc configuration file
* Kevin Coyner [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-05-02 11:22]: Package: rolo Version: 011.dfsg.1-3 Severity: minor The man page for rolo refers to: FILES ~/.rolo/rolorcRolo configuration file. However, there is no rolorc config file anywhere in the package and it does not seem that rolo needs it to run properly. That said, it would be nice to be able to configure the layout of the index page in rolo, and I suspect that is what upstream had in mind when they wrote the man page and referred to a rolorc config file. So perhaps this should be a wishlist item for upstream to create an ability to configure the index layout via a rolorc file. I am going to close this bug report with the upload of 011.dfsg.1-4. I do not think that it makes sense to keep this bug report open as a wishlist. The development of rolo seems to have been stopped. You may try to contact the upstream author about this issue. Bug#422060: vim: cursor jumps over bracketed text on text terminal
Package: vim Version: 7.0.219 This didn't happen with older versions and it's caused by a matchparen-plugin or the like. When I'm moving the cursor from right to left using either the arrow key -, l, or the space bar, the cursor appears to jump from the opening bracket to the closing bracket. It actually doesn't jump, but only appears to. I'll explain. The plugin (or whatever) has made the bad mistake of using reverse video both for the cursor and to emphasize brackets. If reverse video is use both for emphasis and for the cursor, it may be hard (or impossible as I'll show) to distinguish the cursor from the emphasized characters. Furthermore, when the cursor is over an emphasized character, both the cursor and the emphasis become invisible. That's because a reverse-video cursor reverses the video of whatever character it's over and if it happens to be over an emphasized character that's already in reverse video, then it reverses reverse video to normal video. It's like a language or math. where a double negative makes a positive. Reversing reverse-video makes normal video. OK, so I move the cursor one character at a time until I get just before an opening bracket like a [, (, or {. Then I move one more space so the cursor is over the opening bracket, but the cursor then appears to jump over all the way to reverse-video the closing bracket: ], ), or }. Why? Well, the opening bracket is emphasized by reverse video, then the closing bracket is made reverse also, then the reverse video cursor is placed back on the emphasized opening bracket where it belongs and viola, the reverse video of the opening bracket disappears and the opening bracket is displayed in normal video. All this happens so fast that the switching of the opening bracket to reverse video and then back to normal video isn't visible to most people. Well, it is if you watch it intensely. So it looks just like the cursor has jumped over to the closing bracket. When one continues to move the cursor and reaches the closing bracket, a similar jump appears to happen which jumps to the opening bracket. Very confusing! Isn't the emphasis of the brackets supposed to be momentary. The reverse-video of the opposite bracket remains until one moves the invisible cursor off of its mate. I'm using a CIT-101e dumb terminal, but I think that this will happen with many other terminals. So the solution is to say use say underlines to mark the brackets so as not to get the double reverse in video. I note that noshownmatch is set, so it may be a plugin that's doing this and it must be by default since I never asked to use a plugin. But even if I can disable the plugin, it shouldn't behave this way. I've installed the vim-runtime package so something in that may be causing the problem. Bug#421916: tuxpaint-config settings aren't used by tuxpaint
Sorry, Marcos. I wrote my response distractedly last night and didn't finish my thought. I meant to say dpkg-reconfigure -plow locales, then select the appropriate locale. This is not a bug in tuxpaint. Tuxpaint does the best it can, given that it uses UTF-8 fonts for all languages. Bug#421916: tuxpaint-config settings aren't used by tuxpaint
Marcos, On Thu, 3 May 2007 11:53:23 +0100 Marcos Marado [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, shouldn't then tuxpaint-configure install the chosen locale, if it isn't installed yet? Or depend on those locales? It can't depend on the locales because it locales aren't packages, and therefore cannot be stated as dependencies. Also, tuxpaint doesn't know which languages the user actually wants/needs, nor is it the place of an application to reconfigure the system. That's the system administrator's job. As it is, for the end user this is considered as a bug. One installs a package that lets him chose the language, but the choice does not work. I now understand _why_ does it happens, but I still think it shouldn't. Lots of unexpected behaviors in software are not bugs. Some problems are merely a matter of poor understanding on the part of the user, usually due to not reading all of the documentation. I'm not saying the software or the packaging is perfect, nor that I don't take your request seriously. I think there is an opportunity here for the software to make it easier for users to solve this problem on their own, so I did discuss this yesterday with upstream. The answer I got was that we could issue a message when the user has specified a different language and the locale is not found so that the user will know what happened and take the appropriate corrective action. But of course, the message will need to be generic enough to be applicable to all kinds of systems, so it can only state that the locale for the specified language wasn't found. It is still up to the user to read the doc. The Debian specific root of this problem is that unlike on some other systems, since locale data is very large and in most cases all locales are not wanted, Debian leaves it up to the users to install whichever locales are desired. The problem *is* documented here: http://www.tuxpaint.org/docs/html/FAQ.html You can also find a copy of this FAQ (both text and HTML versions) in the Debian tuxpaint packages in /usr/share/doc/tuxpaint-data/. Finally, since Debian users may not be expecting such Debian-specific configuration tips in the FAQ, I have updated the README.Debian to make special note of this tip. I will not make a separate release for such a small change, but it will be included in my next upload. Ben -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
