This is not a corruption. I missed .tar suffix before .bz2, sorry.

Now this is more interesting. I no longer have the broken menu that I
mentioned in the other bug report! However, when I actually select one
of the entries, I get 'error: you need to load the kernel first'.

This seems to be caused by 'root' not being set in grub.cfg any more. Or
rather, it's set to an empty string. Looking closely at update-grub, I
guess changing grub_guess_root_device broke other parts of grub-probe:

+ echo 'Updating /boot/grub/grub.cfg ...'
Updating /boot/grub/grub.cfg ...
+ cat
++ grub-probe --target=device /boot/grub
+ export GRUB_DEVICE=/dev/md0
+ GRUB_DEVICE=/dev/md0
++ grub-probe --target=drive /boot/grub
cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/md0.

Check your device.map. If it's broken, check if your newly modified
   grub-mkdevicemap generates the right thing.

Adding '(md0) /dev/md0' triggers another error:
  'error: /boot/grub/device.map:5: Bad device name'.

Sorry, I'm lost now. I would suggest running a regression test from the
 latest
known-good date (look for Jeroen's RAID-related commits in upstream
 ChangeLog),
 if you have the time.

I don't have time atm, but maybe later I can setup an LVM system to be able to
test such things. Software RAID support is kinda abandoned atm.

It seems that upstream just reviewed this. Can you try latest CVS and report
if that works for you?

This is known behavior if you enable the clamdscan plugin without also
installing the Clamd perl package, not available in debian.

The Clamd package is old and crufty and has been largely replaced by
ClamAV::Client, which provides much the same functionality. Bug#405151,
filed during the Etch freeze, is an ITP for the latter. Once that's uploaded
I can patch clamdscan to use it, or provide an alternative.

In the meantime, I suggest using the clamav plugin, which provides roughly
equivalent functionality using the clamscan client instead. It's slower, but
has no new perl dependencies.

Bug#420820: no console set IBM p5 server

I don't know, but you may want to implement the changes differently.
Regardless, before you submit the final 90console script, I assume I need
to figure out how to detect whether a graphics monitor is used as the
console, as well as how the ATX workstation behaves.

Hi Rolf, ...

I have a question here. Is this a safe way to handle this ? The options
contain the variables of the OF, set by the user, but it is also
possible to boot directly from the OF command line, bypassing the values
found in options, or have special values passed from yaboot. On the
pegasos, but i suppose the same holds true for IBM power boxes, i know
it is even possible to pass these special values by the DHCP server.

This would typically be done in a d-i install, where you want to
over-ride the defaults, without changing the real values. I know i have
done so myself.

So, all in all, it is much better to do the same using the chosen
properties, which is what should be used on CHRP for this kind of
things, and is also said to be so in the CHRP spec.

If you don't believe me, or otherwise ignore me, just ask someone with a
clue on this and they will tell you so.

Friendly,

Sven Luther

Bug#424404: PDF files are much larger with lmodern than with CM fonts

2007-05-17 Thread Reinhard Kotucha
Hi,
Thanh == Thanh Han The [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

this is a feature/limitation/bug/call-what-you-like of pdftex:
it doesn't remove unused Subs entries (this is very tricky and
dangerous), but replaces them by a dummy one.

let me give a few additional explanations. Glyph descriptions are
stored in the so-called CharString array. CharStrings can contain
subroutine calls. Subroutines are stored in the Subrs array.

Though a Type1 font is a PostScript program, it is also possible to
write a parser which supports only the little subset of PostScript
instructions allowed in Type1 fonts. And this is what most font
renderers do.

There is actually no problem to omit unused subroutines if such an
engine is used. PostScript supports sparse arrays.

However, some engines obviously do not even understand this minimal
subset of PostScript code. They just create an array and put all the
subroutines into it. Unfortunately they ignore the array index given
in the font. That means that if Subrs[x] is removed because it is not
used by any CharString of the subset, Subrs[x] will contain the value
which is supposed to be in Subrs[x+1]. With other words: some engines
do not support sparse arrays.

What pdftex and dvips currently do is to replace unused subroutines by
subroutines which contain a return statement only. This is quite
safe. I don't think that it is very dangerous to remove unused
subroutines, but it is a bit inconvenient and makes font inclusion a
bit slower. It is probably necessary to parse the CharStrings first,
create an array which maps original Subrs indices to new ones and then
write out the new Subrs array and a CharString array which uses the
new indices.

There is another important point: If the current subset requires
Subrs[0] ... Subrs[x], subroutines with indices x will be removed.

I do not know how much space the dummy subroutines require in a PDF
file. Maybe I should create a font which has two identical glyphs,
where one glyph uses Subrs[4] and the other calls the identical
subroutine Subrs[1004].

Anyway, unless it is unclear how much is gained by changing writet1.c,
I think that the best way to experiment with such things is to put the
Subrs and CharString arrays into Lua tables. Maybe this had already
been done in LuaTeX.

lmr10 has a very large number of subroutines (~550), while cmr10
   has only 3.

I don't think that the large number of subroutines is the problem. As
I said above, pdftex and dvips remove all subroutines which have a
larger index than the subroutine with the largest index which is
actually needed.

The lm fonts are horribly inefficient in this respect. It would make
sense that characters which are used frequently (the ASCII alphabet,
for instance) use subroutines which are close to Subrs[0].

But in lm, the most common character in western languages, /e calls
Subrs[534], /a calls Subrs[561] and so on.

Another factor is that t1 fonts are encrypted and hence they
cannot be compressed effectively, so all these dummy entries
didn't get much smaller after compression and therefore the result
   is a much larger size.

That's true but the only reasonable solution is to convert Type1 fonts
to CFF. As you already said, that's not a weekend project. I'm quite
optimistic, though. If Taco doesn't want to depend on external
libraries when he provides OTF support, I assume that he has to delve
into it anyway.

On the other hand, in the future pdftex will support OTF. In OTF,
Type1 fonts will be in CFF format. The easiest way to decrease PDF
file size will be to convert Type1 fonts to OTF using an external
tool. AFAIK fontforge is able to convert Type1 to OTF already.

Regards,
  Reinhard

Hmmm, OK.

While we're at it, sending a single PO file in a tarball doesn't make
much sense.

Compressing the file doesn't also make much sense now. In the past,
this was convenient to circumvent encoding problems with broken MUA,
but these days are over now.

I really suggest sending PO files with the exact name they should be

some
other OSes too.

Please, build also the non-PAE kernels in the future.

Bug#424761: openoffice.org-core: Strange recommendation of nfs-common

 Attached debdiff implements this.

This is an Ubuntu-specific bug. Debian currently uses a /var/run that
survives a reboot and so neither needs nor should use this patch. The
interaction with dpkg-statoverride is dubious -- the directory is supplied by
the package and the mode set by dpkg-statoverride in the postinst, so I'm
reluctant to re-create it and bypass dpkg-statoverride.

I'm leaving this open for the moment while I check into the issue some more,
but I will most likely close it, while encouraging you to keep patching it for
Ubuntu's needs. If do create the directory in the initscript, I suggest that
you also remove the line in debian/rules where /var/run/qpsmtpd is created,
and remove the dpkg-statoverride calls from qpsmtpd.postinst.

Thanks for the report.

Bug#424763: digikam: no print option

2007-05-17 Thread Andrew Schulman
Package: digikam
Version: 2:0.9.1-4
Severity: wishlist

If there's an option somewhere in Digikam to print a photo, I can't
find it. Instead I have to open each photo I want to print in some
external viewer, then print.

I did finally find the File Export Print Wizard feature
(apparently from kipi-plugins), but this isn't what I want. I just
want to print a single photo, to one of my standard CUPS printers, on
4x6 photo paper. The Print Wizard doesn't offer me this capability
(it only offers letter-sized papers) and anyway is too convoluted for
the need.

Digikam should offer a standard File Print feature, that just calls
kprinter.

Another useful approach would be to put kprinter in the Open with
context menu for each photo. But maybe that's a kprinter issue.

Thanks,
Andrew.

Moreover, this script allows to do almost atomic mirror updates, so
that your mirror is consistent and can be used during updates.
Thank you, this issue has been fixed now :)
It happened that my sync script was messed up.

  Type: leaf
  Archive-http: /pub/debian/
  Mirrors-from: mirrors.tds.net

Would ftp.br.debian.org be a faster source mirror ?
That's right, I'll run the next syncs from there.

Moreoever, according the the trace directory, you mirror from kernel.org.
My bad, I had it mistaken with another mirror source we use.

Maybe you changed the architectures mirrors afterwards, but there are
many missing packages for example in

 You can compare with ftp://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/pool/main/b/base-files/

That's right, we decided to remove the following architetures to save
disk space: alpha arm hppa hurd-i386 m68k mipsel mips s390 sparc
Sorry for that.

 Could you fix that ?

Everything _should_ be fixed by now.

Thanks for mirroring Debian and best regards,

What are the installed packages ('dpkg --get-selections', in the hope

Is the pcmciautils package installed?

Bug#424629: security upgrade broke permissions check

2007-05-17 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Kai Henningsen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
 Package: samba

(Versions below from after I downgraded Samba: 3.0.24-6 works fine.)

Symptoms: on a share with force group set, users no longer have access
according to their usual groups; as newly created files (correctly) have
the forced group, presumably somehow samba lost the supplementary group
 list.

 This seriously broke this machine.

I'm afraid I don't really get all the needed information to properly
process this bug report.

Your complete smb.conf file would help as well as the permissions on
the offending directory and the users/group mapping (which users
belong to what group, at least for the groups involved i the problem
you describe)

Of course, providing a level 10 log file (hopefully restricted to that
directory) would help, in case you're in position of reproducing the
bug again (which may be hard on a production server).

Bug#424767: python 2.4.4-5 postinst failure on upgrade

2007-05-17 Thread GaRoualland

Looking at postinst, the issue is on /var/lib/python :

$ sh -x -e ./postinst configure
+ [ -d /etc/python ]

+ [ -n ]
+ [ -f /var/lib/python/python2.5_already_installed ]
+ rm -f /var/lib/python/python2.5_already_installed
+ rmdir --ignore-fail-on-non-empty /var/lib/python

My system didn't have /var/lib/python, so rmdir returns an exit status that
makes the postinst script die. Creating /var/lib/python fixed the install.

Simple workaround for the script : ignore rmdir result with eg ||
/bin/true, or test the presence of the directory before calling rmdir.

Bug#424774: aMule is missing a libpng dependency

2007-05-17 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
Package: amule
Version: 2.1.3-2

amuleweb needs libpng, and it's there at build time due to dependencies.

However, since it's not explicitly called, debhelper doesn't catch it,
so it's not in Depends: field. This can lead to a user missing it, which
leads to a crash in amuleweb.

Please, either add it at Build-Depends (which might be a bad idea, since
then every other package will depend on it, when they don't need) or add
it in amule-daemon Depends.

This has been reported upstream:
http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=12630.0

Thanks

I have created boot floppy images for six different versions of syslinux,
including the current versions in unstable and experimental. The version
included in the name of the image is the syslinux version used.

Could you please try them all and tell us which work and which don't? Note
that you only need to check which images boot; you can reboot as soon as
you are asked to insert the root floppy.

The images are available from:

Bug#424759: linux-image-2.6.18-4-xen-686: Please build both PAE and non-PAE kernels for Xen

On Thu, May 17, 2007 at 11:20:26AM +0400, Max Dmitrichenko wrote:
Using PAE kernels and hypervisor is required for big virtualizing servers.
But non-PAE kernels are also required by developers, students and other
people who use Xen on their desktop boxes to do OS research, multiplatform
development and so on. Providing only PAE kernel disables the ability to
run at least NetBSD and OpenSolaris, may be some other OSes too.

Please, build also the non-PAE kernels in the future.

IMHO this bug should be wontfixed. We already provide binary kernel images
for an excessive number of flavors; it's unrealistic to think that we would
be able to provide prepackaged images for all possible use cases, the
important thing is to provide images that are usable on all target
/hardware/, and if a user needs more specific options afterwards that's why
we have linux-tree and linux-source packages.

Bug#424778: mysql-server-5.0: MySQL Multiple Query Handling Privilege Escalation and Security Bypass Vulnerabilities

2007-05-17 Thread Stefan Fritsch
Package: mysql-server-5.0
Version: 5.0.38-3
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

Some security issues have been found in mysql:

CVE-2007-2693:
MySQL before 5.1.18 allows remote authenticated users without SELECT
privileges to obtain sensitive information from partitioned tables via
an ALTER TABLE statement.

CVE-2007-2692:
The mysql_change_db function in MySQL 5.0.x before 5.0.40 and 5.1.x
before 5.1.18 does not restore THD::db_access privileges when
returning from SQL SECURITY INVOKER stored routines, which allows
remote authenticated users to gain privileges.

CVE-2007-2691:
MySQL before 4.1.23, 5.0.x before 5.0.42, and 5.1.x before 5.1.18 does
not require the DROP privilege for RENAME TABLE statements, which
allows remote authenticated users to rename arbitrary tables.

See http://www.frsirt.com/english/advisories/2007/1804
for more info.

Please mention the CVE ids in the changelog.
