Thanks for reminding us, we totally lost that from our radar.

I dislike diversions, I think the concept is flawed (although it might
work without problems in this particular case). If anyone comes up with
an alternative, I'd be glad to use that...

Bug#428276: New upstream release 3.3

2007-06-11 Thread Ola Lundqvist
Hi Gilles

Thanks for the information. I was not aware that it has
been released.

What is your opinion; is the graphics problems in the new version
severe enough to keep the old version, even though #420633 exists?

I will not update to the new version in a couple of weeks as I'm going
on vacation.

This file, and maybe more from the toplevel directory, should be

Bug#425760: gnome-vfs-obexftp: Doesn't work with Sony Ericsson W880i

2007-06-11 Thread James Henstridge

Hi Vincent,

You may be able to get some better errors out of the gnomevfs-*
utilities from the libgnomevfs2-bin package. Try the following
commands:

   gnomevfs-ls obex:///
   gnomevfs-ls obex://[...]/
   gnomevfs-ls obex://[...]/somedir
   gnomevfs-info obex://[...]/
   gnomevfs-info obex://[...]/somefile

(insert the bluetooth device address where appropriate).

If you still have troubles, could you open a bug report here:
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-vfs-obexftp/

Thanks,

James.

Justin,

Could you have a read of man-pages(7) (new in 2.54). There are various
things there that you could improve in this page.

Again, from the "." lines.

And, have you got an example program?

Cheers,

Michael

If it's not too much trouble, I'd appreciate an acknowledgement reply
to this bug along the lines of

Packaging of 22.1 is underway, but not yet complete.

so that I can at least stop fretting on that score. Please do mention
also if there is anything us poor users can do to speed the process
along (other than testing 22.0.99+1-1).

It is a known problem that KMail is not asynchronous when processing
incoming
mail (but it is when dispatching it). As far as I know, the solution is a
rewrite of the affected code, in order to make it fully threaded. I do not
know if such rewrite has been done in the KDE4 branch.

Yes. Alas I'm not 100% clear what resolved it.

Removing the Tango theme is top of my suspicion list.

It is hard to be sure. At one point I thought the issue was selecting an
email in your Inbox that you had never read before. But whilst the
problem occurred most times within a few seconds of starting Icedove,
that wasn't consistent either. Without a consistent way to reproduce it
was hard to be confident that the issue was resolved.

We migrated a customer system with Zend Optimizer to etch. To my suprise, it
was working with latest version of Zend Optimizer out of the box with php4.
Can't say anything for php5, cause there are some modifications needed, until
the applications are working with php5.
Maybe anybody can verify this with php5?
Until all works well with stock php[45], I wont maintain the packages
mentioned above.

With kind regards, Jan.

we find this very useful and we currently add a softupdate class in a hook

classes="$classes FAI_ACTION_softupdate"
cfclasses="$cfclasses.FAI_ACTION_softupdate"

What is tango theme? A gnome theme or an icedove theme?

Can you reproduce by reenabling that theme?

This problem is related to the kernel, not to gnome. Reassigning.

Hi Free,

I prepare an upload of new version for fmit, so NMU is not necessary.

I spoke with upstream about this bug, and in effect, new version must
solve all problem, but for #414391, I would like to see what you want to
do, because if you want include the patch on BTS, it is not the
solution. I try to find a good solution to solve this problem.

If you have a best solution, could you purpose me ?

Thanks for the quick answer. I don't have a better solution for
#414391, if you don't like the one proposed by the submitter with the
relevant patch, I'd propose to leave it open for now.

The important thing at the moment is to fix #403567, which renders the
package unusable on some amd64 CPUs.

Bug#428361: e2fsprogs: please document e2fs options <-> kernel version compatibility

2007-06-11 Thread A Mennucc
Package: e2fsprogs

hi Ted

Brief background:
I am currently trying to replace a old HD in a box running an old
Ubuntu; to this end , I created a similar set of partitions in new
HD using Debian/Etch, and started copying data in the new HD
 (and this will take a long time);
but I realized that the old partitions had
  Filesystem features: has_journal filetype needs_recovery sparse_super
while the newly created one have
  Filesystem features: has_journal resize_inode dir_index filetype
needs_recovery sparse_super large_file

 Since the Ubuntu box uses
  Linux 2.6.12-10-386
  e2fsprogs 1.38-2ubuntu1
I would like to know if those flags are supported ; but I checked
the docs, both in the Debian packages and in
   http://e2fsprogs.sourceforge.net/
 and could not understand it.

So here is my wishlist : may you document these facts?

For example: whenever you add a new feature to ext2 / ext3 ,
may you add a line in the release notes of e2fsprogs, saying
 "release 1.xx : added feature XXX_XXX, and this needs linux >= 2.2.ZZ "

thanks in advance

a.

Please can you give grub-of a grace period? I plan to fix its RC bugs, but
can't right now because I don't have the hardware (I will have it very soon,
it's already ordered).

I ask this because although grub-of is currently broken, overall grub2
(grub-pc, grub-efi) isn't. Removing the whole thing would be detrimental
for these.

Hi Daniel,

most probably, under hg is not possible to add and rename and entry in
the same changeset. I actually think this is a strange thing (only?)
darcs allows, and that when the target does not handle it, the tailor
backend should collapse the two actions into a single "add b".

Thanks for reporting and testing!

ciao, lele.

Well, I guess hardcoding the desired page into info itself would be
fine, it's not like it's a patch that will go upstream so it doesn't
need to be particularly elegant.

Uhm, sorry, but after re-reading your previous email, where you added
this little test recipe::

cd /tmp
mkdir tailor-test
cd tailor-test
mkdir foo

cd foo
darcs init
echo "This is some data" > A
darcs add A && darcs record -a -m "Adding A"
darcs mv A B && darcs record -a -m "Renaming A"

my comment above does not have any sense: there were *two* distinct
changesets!

Will try it in the afternoon,

You are using an internal private API, not the command or public
API. This copy() function does not actually copy anything in the
filesystem, its role is to notify the Hg repo a copy already
occurred, which is what Tailor needs since it rsynced the files.

Hello, Adrian. I do not understand completely your comment.

If I run "konqueror about:blank" from konsole, I get a blank konqueror
with
the cursor ready in the location bar. Isn't it what you want?

Bug#428319: spamassassin: sa-update started from cron.daily is probably a DoS attack

2007-06-11 Thread Justin Mason

> I'm not sure we can right now. (The architecture is there so that we
> could handle it if we wanted to, but we'd better mitigate it if
> possible.)

That's my thinking -- the architecture is already there.

sa-update's DNS polling is incredibly lightweight and can handle millions
of clients updating simultaneously. It then picks up a URL from DNS to
find the list of mirrors, then picks a mirror and downloads from that.

Right now we only have one mirror listed, but it's trivial to add more to
the MIRRORED_BY list. Also, a failed download will not affect anything
for users, apart from maybe that they may miss a pending update for N
hours -- there'd be no serious error condition for them to have to deal
with. Accordingly I think we could leave it as-is, see what happens,
and deal with scaling the backend farm entirely reactively.

PS: it's not a matter of DDOS-proofing btw -- or at least, that's not what
the OP was talking about. If we're worried about DDOS-proofing, that's a
different issue (and again one that's fixed entirely at the backend).

(current question is about too many "friendly" users using sa-update;
DDOS-proofing is to deal with hostile botnets hitting our backend servers
en masse, at which stage we'd probably need something like Prolexic's help
on the backend.)

I also observed that problem here. Sleep 10 is sometimes too short, so
Apache2 simple stops instead of restarting - I consider that a major bug.

We observed that problem many times when running on vmware.

Isn't there a better solution than 'sleep 10'?

I believe the problem to be there. I also used a similar setup and
update-manager seems to happily ignore pinning. Or at least used to do.
I haven't checked with a recent version.

Yes, according to the documentation. I think the bug should be closed. Thanks.

Bug#423746: (no subject)

2007-06-11 Thread Thomas Lange
Since NFS v3 is pretty easy to set up and normal in these days, I will
not fix this. Only fai-chboot is using v3 as default (only if you are
using the option -i), but this can easily be changed. Create a
template for fai-chboot by hand and copy this using the flag -c when
calling fai-chboot.

Could we check this? If this is intended behavior, it should indeed be
documented in big fat letters somewhere :-)

I probably won't be at the computer in question for several more days, BTW,
but I hope to try to reproduce the bug then.

Bug#428373: debianutils: savelog loses data when compression binary is unavailable

2007-06-11 Thread Herman van Rink
Package: debianutils
Version: 2.20.1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

When starting savelog with the -j option, while bzip2 in not installed, caused
the file that was supposed to be compressed to be lost.
The lost file is overwritten because no checks are made if the compression
succeded.

I came across this bug in version 2.17 (etch), but since only a single
nonrelated line changed in unstable it seemd better to file it against 2.20.1.

This could also happen for gzip, if it weren't installed.

I suggest adding a check at start of this script, as demonstrated in the
attached patch.
Another possible solution would be to add a verification step after compression.

Greetz,

Herman van Rink

Are you no longer working for Brailcom? I've been told Brailcom
received a sponsored ibmtts engine for driver development...

No promises either since I am pretty unfamiliar with speech-dispatcher,
but I might take a look at it sometime in the future.

I am doing this in the spirit of "supporting our users", and not
"supporting proprietary software"...

Ah, that did it. The offender was libgwrap-runtime0-dev.

Bug#428379: update-manager: Install dependencies of packages that it doesn't upgrade

2007-06-11 Thread Raphael Hertzog
Package: update-manager
Version: 0.42.2ubuntu22-11
Severity: important

Currently my APT configuration is such that it believes that it should
upgrade qemu to the sid version (although I run etch with
APT::Default-Release "stable"), that's because I have a custom qemu
installed (not marked "on hold" as I should have done it).

$ LANG=C apt-cache policy qemu
qemu:
  Installed: 0.9.0-1~db1
  Candidate: 0.9.0-2
  Version table:
 0.9.0-2 0
500 http://ftp.fr.debian.org sid/main Packages
 *** 0.9.0-1~db1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 0.8.2-4etch1 0
990 http://security.debian.org etch/updates/main Packages
990 http://ftp.fr.debian.org etch-proposed-updates/main Packages
 0.8.2-4 0
990 http://ftp.fr.debian.org etch/main Packages

Of course this qemu can't be upgraded without uppgrading the rest of the system.
So update-manager warns me of updated packages that it can't install because
other packages are needed and/or need to to be removed.

Depite of this, update-manager happily proposed me to install "bochbios,
vgabios,
proll and openhackware" which are new dependencies of qemu and which aren't
needed
if you don't upgrade qemu (which is not really doable anyway). Of course those
packages are currently NOT installed.

Then, I decided to mark qemu on hold to make it clear that I don't want to
upgrade
that package.

$ dpkg --get-selections | grep ^qemu
qemuhold

Same behaviour... so it seems that update-manager's algorithm doesn't respect
my wish
to keep a package at the current version. That's another bug...

Cheers,

Bug#428381: ftp.debian.org: proposed-updates is not part of "release a=stable"

2007-06-11 Thread Raphael Hertzog
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Since "proposed-updates" contain only approved updates for the next stable
release it make sense to add it to the sources.lists (at least for some
users).

I have done so and I'm discovering a little quirk related to its use.

Until now I had etch + proposed-updates only in my sources.list.
Recently I have added sid in my sources.list and added
APT::Default-Release "stable" to make sure to follow etch.

All packages which already got updated via proposed-updates are now
candidates for upgrade to sid... that's because proposed-updates is
not labelled as being part of "release a=stable" and as such is not pinned
accordingly.

It has:
release v=4.0-updates,o=Debian,a=proposed-updates,l=Debian,c=main

Whereas etch has:
release v=4.0r0,o=Debian,a=stable,l=Debian,c=main

I don't know how dak works but IMO it would make more sense to have
proposed-updates be:
release v=4.0-updates,o=Debian,a=stable,l=Debian,c=proposed-updates/main

Of course, for an experienced APT user the problem is minor. It can be
solved by adding this snippet to /etc/apt/preferences:
Package: *
Pin: release a=proposed-updates
Pin-Priority: 990

But I really believe that APT::Default-Release "stable" should be enough
and do the right thing with proposed-updates as well.

Cheers,

Bug#428382: digikam: "add border" does not work

2007-06-11 Thread Martin Weigel
Package: digikam
Version: 2:0.9.2~beta3-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

In the "Add Border" entry of the "Decorate" menu, only the simple border
types "Solid", "Niepce" and "Beveled" produce the expected results. The
more fancy styles including a specific pattern "Decorative XXX" produce
a completely black image, no matter what is chosen for the border
width/height and border colors. There are no error messages, but I guess
that possibly the corresponding pattern files are not found.

Best,

Martin

Bug#418479: dbconfig-common: Suggestion for improvement in the dbconfig-message

2007-06-11 Thread Guillaume Yziquel
Package: dbconfig-common
Version: 1.8.29+etch1
Followup-For: Bug #418479

I've tried installing webcalendar. webcalendar is in testing/unstable,
and I use a stable version with occasional testing/unstable/experimental
packages. (dbconfig-common is in stable version)

I came across the following dbconfig-common message while trying to
install webcalendar:

Configuring webclendar

webcalendar must have a database installed and configured before it
can be used. If you like, this can be handled with bdconfig-common.

If you are an advanced database administrator and know that you want
to perform this configuration manually, or if your database has
already been installed and configured, you should reuse this option.
Details on what needs to be done should most likely be provided in
   /usr/share/doc/webclendar/

Otherwise, you should probably choose this option.

Configure database for webcalendar with dbconfig-common?

I answered Yes to this question and postgresql to the next one. Things
did not work out. I contacted the maintainer of webcalendar, made these
remarks, and it turns out that the average user that I am did not
understand that an installed database was needed. This is why I'd like
to suggest the following:

1) In the first paragraph of the debconf message, why not precise things
in the following sense: "If you like configuration can be handled with
dbconfig-common." This would make me wonder more about installation of
the database.

2) The reference to the documentation should be separated from the
second paragraph. This paragraph indeed starts with a "If you are an
advanced database admnistrator [...] or if your database has already
been installed and configured", which is not the case for me. The fact
that the link is in the same paragraph made me think that this should
not concern me that much.

Hope this remark will help others.

Sincerely yours,

Guillaume Yziquel.

The debian mirror is automounted so it disapears in the middle of the dpkg

Bug#428384: If SELinux installed, init script redirects into /dev/null before it is created

2007-06-11 Thread Martin Orr
Package: udev
Version: 0.105-4
Severity: normal

If SELinux is installed, then the make_extra_nodes function in the udev init
script does
/sbin/restorecon /dev/$name >/dev/null 2>/dev/null
before /dev/null has been created.
There is no reason to redirect into /dev/null anyway because restorecon
produces no output unless something goes wrong.

This results in /dev/null being created as a regular file instead of a char
device until it is recreated by udevtrigger. It gets the wrong SELinux
context, resulting in error messages such as:
Jun  8 10:50:55 tiberius kernel: audit(1181296212.884:4): avc:  denied  {
read write } for pid=463 comm="modprobe" name="null" dev=tmpfs ino=724

scontext=system_u:system_r:insmod_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023

Hi,

gnome-about is the source of one of the top crashers in GNOME upstream:

It seems this is fixed in cairo upstream with commit
ab6a767cf476c98b466c62dd410d0f61f8dd6bbb which seems to be part of the
next upstream release, 1.4.7. Could you please either prepare the new
upstream releases or apply the attached patch?

I tried to reproduce the problem on a PowerPC iMac with Ubuntu. I can use the
reader without problem.

I also compiled and installed pcsc-lite 1.4.2 (Ubuntu has an older version) and
I can't reproduce the problem.

> Please note that I've only got access to this device as a result of being

I do not have Debian installed on this machine and do not plan to install it.
So I would need your help and some more debug info.

Can you rebuild the libgempc430 package and install the driver directly so the
debug info is not stripped?

When you start pcscd inside gdb use the pcscd arguments --foreground --debug

Bug#428388: xserver-xorg: OpenOffice regularly crashes X, rendering the system unusable

2007-06-11 Thread Mike Brodbelt
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.2-3
Severity: normal

I regularly have problems with X crashing hard, locking up the entire
display. When this occurs, the moue pointer still reposnds, but all
other input is ignored, animated screen elements freeze, and mousing to
alternate desktops becomes impossible. The only way to restore fucntion
has been to either reboot the machine with the Magic SysRq shortcuts, or
to log in from a remote machine and kill -9 the X server.

The crash only occurs with OpenOffice, and most commonly happens when I
have opened a document attached to an email. OpenOffice will start fine,
but clicking (or using keyboard shortcuts) to access any of the dropdown
menus on the application menu bar will trigger the crash. I estimate
that happens in excess of 75% of the time, though I have not yet been
able to reproduce it entirely to order. Its difficult to reproduce
immediately after a reboot or restart of X, but appears to manifest more
readily after the X server has been running for a while.

The machine is using an onboard Intel graphics card:-

Bug#428334: [Pkg-alsa-devel] Bug#428334: wrong search path for plugins "plugindir"

I assume this is an error in alsa-lib's configure script:
AC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED(ALSA_PLUGIN_DIR, "plugindir", [directory containing ALSA
add-on modules])
ALSA_PLUGIN_DIR="$plugindir"AC_SUBST(ALSA_PLUGIN_DIR)

That should read $plugindir, obviously.

We'll pass --with-plugindir for now, and will try to get a patch
accepted upstream.

Thanks for your bug report,

Bug#424038: reason for compiler name in library names

2007-06-11 Thread Peter Moulder
I haven't read the libboost documentation, but I speculate that the
reason that the upstream library names all include `gcc41' is because
different C++ compilers give a different ABI for a given piece of code
(different name mangling, calling conventions etc.). This is comparable
to debian's practice of putting `c2a' in package names (see
http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2005/04/msg00153.html for the c2
part; I can't find an authoritative explanation of the `a' part, but it
indicates an ABI-incompatible change in the default allocator used by
libstdc++).

Including an indicator of the compiler (or ABI) in the library name is
presumably intended to allow having multiple ABI versions installed at
once.

As I say, that's just my guesses without having looked at libboost
documentation or speaking with libboost maintainers.

As for how calling programs should determine what ABI version
to link against, I suppose we either

  - hard-code the answer (e.g. have a symlink that doesn't include a
compiler/ABI version, or a pkg-config name that doesn't mention
compiler/ABI version) and handle C++ ABI transitions much the same
as other libraries; and/or

  - provide an autoconf macro that does something like

  lb_ABI=`${CXX} -E -dM - &1 |grep ABI`
  case "$lb_ABI" in
'#define __GXX_ABI_VERSION 1002') lb_abi_str=-gcc41 ;;
'#define __GXX_ABI_VERSION 102') lb_abi_str=-gcc33 ;;
...
  esac

The libboost source might give a clue as to what tests to use and/or
what library names libboost uses for different compilers (-gcc33 was
just my guess).

pjrm.

Bug#428390: acpi=off does work on commandline but not in in lilo.conf

2007-06-11 Thread Manfred Brandl
Package: lilo
Version: 1:22.6.1-9.3
severity: grave

When cold booting one of my servers after 10 seconds of lilo-timeout I see on
the console:
===
boot:
Loading Linux.
BIOS data check successful
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
===
After that nothing happens.
I think that lilo does not successfully pass "acpi=off" to the kernel,
because when I start with "Linux acpi=off" everything works fine.
My Server requires the Linux Kernel acpi to be switched off to start.

I think that makes lilo nearly unusable for this server and kernel, because I
want it to start without human intervention at the console.
Please adjust severity if you have another opinion.

I use this lilo.conf

Bug#428392: dkim-filter.sock permissions should be more MTA friendly

2007-06-11 Thread Tony Hoyle
Package: dkim-filter
Version: 1.0.0.dfsg-1
Severity: normal

The default permissions of /var/run/dkim-filter/dkim-filter.sock only
allow the dkim-filter user to write to it. This precludes the MTA being
able to use it as a milter, since that runs as its own user.

Also default permissions allow execute with is pointless (you can't of
course execute a socket). That's a minor issue though.

I suggest creating a dkim-milter group at install and giving
that write access to the socket.

The reason is that in fact the DB is updated in place, so I wouldn't like
people to think this is gonna create a new (as an opposition to old)
database..

This is the only change I made before calling for translations by error, so
that way both work wouldn't overlap..
Also, I have received some translations that are not reported in the BTS, I
will report them as soon as I have my current working package..

I tried quickly and it seems to no more be the case. It follows
APT::Default-Release and custom pinning that I've put in
/etc/apt/preferences.

(It doesn't follow "hold" instruction from dpkg however)

Bug#425928: More info on slony1 build failure

These messages are not the reason, that it fails. So the bug report
title is not well chosen :)

Can you please attach the slony.xml from your package build? You can
also send it via PM. The issue seems to be related to docbook2x, which I
care about. But the issue you report should have been fixed some time
ago. So I'm wondering, why you still observe it.

I cannot reproduce the issue you describe - even not in a i386 pbuilder.
On which architecture are you working? Can you post/attach the complete
pbuilder build log, so I can compare it to mine?

Regards, Daniel

Bug#428395: RM: firebird2 -- RoM; obsolete, renamed to firebird1.5

2007-06-11 Thread Damyan Ivanov
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

firebird2 was renamed to firebird1.5 to match upstream branch and make
room for firebird2.0, firebird2.1 etc.

There are no reverse dependencies.

There are two build-dependencies on firebird2-dev, bugs filed[1], plus,
firebird2-dev is Provided by firebird1.5-dev (the new name) so removing
of firebird2-dev will not cause FTBFS. Actually, it will help
automatically fix the bugs in question.

Bug#428396: unclear or incorrect package dependency of latex-svninfo

2007-06-11 Thread Simon Dreher

Package: latex-svninfo
Version: 0.4-1

Hello,

I just wanted to install the svninfo package with texlive, but the
debian package I found has tetex-bin as dependency. Is this package for
tetex only? Then tetex-svninfo would be a far better name for the
package; at least it should be mentioned in the package information. Or
is it also for texlive, then the dependencies should be adjusted to
accept also the corresponding package of texlive.

Best regards,
Simon

Bug#428397: "pear install" calls undefined method

2007-06-11 Thread CruX
Package: php-pear
Version: 5.2.0-8+etch1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

First of all I'm sending this report from a different machine that the
one where php-pear is installed. In that one Etch is installed with
apache2 and php5 and every upgrade to date.

When running "pear install Mail Mail_Mime Auth_HTTP" a fatal error
appeared saying:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method
PEAR_PackageFile_v1::getProvidesExtension() in
/usr/local/php5/lib/php/PEAR/Downloader/Package.php on line 963

I worked around it with the attached patch. I don't know if this is
fixed in newer versions, though I couldn't find any related bugs
neither Changelogs.

Thanks for your attention.

Bug#280550: oggz-tools: oggzmerge generates unplayable files

2007-06-11 Thread Conrad Parker

Hi,

I just committed some changes to warn against this.

http://trac.annodex.net/changeset/2884
add more info about usage of oggzmerge to manpage, and suggest using cat to
 sequence Ogg Vorbis audio files.

http://trac.annodex.net/changeset/2887
oggzmerge: add a big warning to stderr if you are trying to merge multiple
 Ogg Vorbis I files together.

Now if you run oggzmerge on some Ogg Vorbis files as described in this
bug report, it will
print the following to stderr:

oggzmerge: WARNING: Merging Ogg Vorbis I files. The resulting file will
contain 5 tracks in parallel, interleaved for simultaneous playback.
If you want to sequence these files one after another, use cat instead.

These modifications will be available in the next release of liboggz (>= 0.9.6).

cheers,

Conrad.
