Bug#457738: asclock: Please offer languages depending on locale

2007-12-25 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: asclock
Version: 2.0.12-8.2
Severity: wishlist
Tags: l10n

While working on #457360 I saw that asclock supports many languages:
breton czech danish dutch english french german hebrew
hungarian indonesian italian japanese norwegian portuguese
russian  slovene  spanish  swedish  ukrainian

During build time, however, english is chosen and all other languages
are disregarded. I tried to hack your build system to choose a
different language at least at build time, but this appears to be
non-trivial. Manually copying month.xpm and weekday.xpm to the proper
place after installation works, however.

Choosing at install time is suboptimal, however. Please add the code
necessary to support them at *runtime*. If you or upstream don't have
time atm for this please tell me and I can have a look.

It's a pitty that these languages are present but not used in debian,
given the huge i18n effort.

Bug#457360: dpkg is now localized!

retitle 457360 asclock: Fails to install in locales with localized dpkg present
severity 457360 important
tags 457360 + patch
thanks robot

Hello Marcello,
I looked at your package now in detail and found out that you assume that dpkg
prints
messages in English only. This is, however, no longer true. The patch below
fixes this,
I tested it on my box with German locale.

While building and testing, I noticed that some work has piled up in your
packages (lots
of warnings from debhelper, linda, lintian, ...). Maybe you can use the
Christmas season
to bring asclock up to date (see also my other wishlist bug).

If you don't have the time/interest to work on asclock atm (any more) please
tell me. If
I don't hear from you I'll provide a NMU in January for this bug, probably with
the
following changelog entry:

asclock (2.0.12-8.2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * Don't rely on dpkg's messages to be printed in English but rather force
C locale where necessary (Closes: #457360)

 -- Helge Kreutzmann [EMAIL PROTECTED]  Tue, 25 Dec 2007 09:37:05 +0100

I would be glad to fix all obvious linda/lintian/debconf errors as well with
your
consent, though.

   2.9 - sftp/scp fails at connection, but ssh is OK.

   sftp and/or scp may fail at connection time if you have shell
   initialization (.profile, .bashrc, .cshrc, etc) which produces output
   for non-interactive sessions. This output confuses the sftp/scp
   client. You can verify if your shell is doing this by executing:

   ssh yourhost /usr/bin/true

   If the above command produces any output, then you need to modify your

That could be it, I no longer have that machine in an operating state to

Bug#457736: nbd-client does really nasty things when root is an nbd device

2007-12-25 Thread Zygo Blaxell
Package: nbd-client
Version: 1:2.9.9-1
Severity: normal

Somewhere during the installation process of nbd-client the maintainer
scripts invoke /etc/init.d/nbd-client stop, which not only shuts down
all nbd clients known to the nbd-client package, but also all other nbd
devices which were set up by other means (such as ad-hoc commands and/or
initrd), whether such devices are currently in use or not.

In my problem case, the root filesystem is on a network block device,
so installation of the nbd-client package proceeds no further than
this point.

A final amusing twist: after rebooting, the system comes back up, and
'dpkg --configure -a' simply brings it back down again. dpkg can't
possibly remember that it has tried and failed to do this before,
since its only persistent filesystem goes away before it can store this
information anywhere.

Note that the filesystem in question is actually md RAID1 of nbd devices.
e.g. if you set up /dev/nbd11 and /dev/nbd21 on separate machines, then
run 'mdadm --create --level=1 --raid-disks=2 /dev/md1 /dev/nbd[12]1'
you will have a similar configuration.

This issue may be specific to the use of an md-RAID1 system, or use of
recent kernel versions, or some combination of these with NBD.
2.6.23 seems to have different definitions of busy devices relative
to previous kernels; however, I still think tearing down NBD devices that
are otherwise unknown to debconf or in any 'nbd-client' Debian package
configuration file from nbd-client's init script is not a good idea.

 I already noticed this on libcwidget0, and decided to implement what

Bug#457740: remove \n from syslinux splash screens

2007-12-25 Thread Tzafrir Cohen
Package: live-helper
Version: 1.0~a37-2
Severity: minor

When I boot my live CD I see that all the splash screens have a newline
before the word 'boot:', even though the text is of the same sentence
('press Enter to boot:').

The splash screens should not end with a \n (in vim: 'set bin noeol|w'.)

In addition this will remove a line of text, so all the screens, except
the initial one, will need an extra blank line.

 There's a fix in ubuntu, see bug 83810.

Working entry created with the old version of makeinfo 4.11 without the
fix:

 And here is the header of /usr/share/info/zsh.info.gz in the working
 4.3.4-dev-6-1 version:

I cannot check now for the format of these START-INFO-DIR-ENTRY but
could it be that the additional spaces at the beginning are wrong?

Strange enough I cannot see anything in the above fix which might cause
this problem. Do you have any idea?

Best wishes

Yes, I know. I discovered the problem with a different version of
console-screen.sh, which only handled the official arguments.

My point is that usplash depend on undocumented behaviur of
console-tools, and it seem like a bad idea to me.

Bug#455579: Bug duplicates

2007-12-25 Thread Benjamin Mesing
retitle 439938 packagesearch crashes when package database changes (e.g.
installed state, package list,..)
forcemerge 439938 441841 455579
block 439938 by 442841
thanks

Most likely all merged bugs are caused by the fact, that the apt-package
database changes while packagesearch is running. This can be caused e.g.
by installation of packages or an apt-get/aptitude update.
Packagesearch currently does not handle this gracefully and segfaults.

A fix will need to detect changes in the apt-database and reload it
whenever it is changed (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=442841 for a possible
approach to get this done).

Bug#456893: e16: Do not conflict with e17 (enlightenment 16.999)

2007-12-25 Thread Pavel Reznicek

Hi Laurence,

  none of those 3 files sits in the unofficial e17 packages - neither
those from edevelop.org nor from elive project. I do not know about any
other e17 debian builds, guessing that these two are mainly used.

There is just a messing (but not conflict) in the /usr/share/enlightenment
directory, which is either used by e17 and also by e16 addons like
epplets. But since it is not conflicting (and won't be in the future,
since e17 is using modules instead of epplets), it should not be a
problem.

A confirmation from the e17 comunity that e16.8 (but not e16.7) and e17
can coexist on the same system can be found here:

2007-12-25 Thread Kai Weber
Package: cpufrequtils

Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The script init.d/loadcpufreq is disabled by default, so no modules for
cpu frequency scaling are loaded. This makes init.d/cpufrequtils fail
as well.

If I read REDAME.Debian correctly this is not the desired behaviour.
loadcpufreq should be enabled by default and if someone wishes to
override this he should create a file /etc/default/loadcpufreq like
the provided example.

I guess in the loadcpufreq script a default ENABLED=true is missing.

 You need to use LC_ALL=C here, because LC_MESSAGES or LC_ALL could have
 been set in the environment.

 thanks for the information, I'll use this in the next revision of the
 patch if necessary, but this way it works at least on my rather fresh
 install of Debian.

Because you have only LANG set, but not LC_MESSAGES or LC_ALL:

,
| $ echo $LANG
| de_DE.UTF-8
| $ /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display garbage
| Keine Alternativen für garbage.
| $ env LANG=C /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --display garbage

Bug#457759: PTS: bug summary counts bugs that are assigned to two or more packages more than once

2007-12-25 Thread Frank S. Thomas
Package: qa.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: pts

Hello,

If one bug is assigned to two or more binary packages of the same source
package, the PTS' Bugs count summary counts this bug more than once. This
summary should only count bugs in the source package. The DDPO does this
right, compare for example:
http://packages.qa.debian.org/b/boinc.html with
http://qa.debian.org/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
The PTS shows 10 bugs while the DDPO shows only 8. The DDPO is right here, as
one can see at http://bugs.debian.org/src:boinc.

Bug#432219: amarok: partial upgrades from etch broken

2007-12-25 Thread Modestas Vainius
Hi,

2007 m. July 8 d., Sunday, jūs rašėte:
  I've read the discussion on circular dependencies and lack of versioning
  on virtual packages, and I propose a solution: what about dropping the
  amarok-engines package and amarok-engine virtual package altogether. At
  the moment there is only the xine engine anyway. Here is my proposal for
  new depends:
I would rather leave virtual engine package. Although it's unlikely that there
will ever be more than 3 usable amarok engines in Debian, virtual package
looks cleaner than cluttering Depends field with hardcored alternatives (even
3). However, if dropping the virtual package turns out to be a cleaner
solution for more severe problems (e.g. circular dependences), I'll do it.

  Package: amarok
  Depends: amarok-xine (= ${binary:Version})

  Package: amarok-xine
  Recommends: amarok (= ${binary:Version})

  That can easily be extended if another engine package becomes available
  by simply making the other engine(s) alternate dependencies of amarok. I
  doubt there would ever be more than 4 different engines, which is
  maintainable.

 Yah, this is a good solution which I've been reluctant to adopt in the
 past. I'll consider it together with other options, and will pick up one
 to solve this problem.
In my opinion, this solution fails to meet Policy 7.2:

quote
Depends
 This declares an absolute dependency. A package will not be configured unless
all of the packages listed in its Depends field have been correctly
configured.
/quote

i.e. it's circular dependency so dpkg can't clearly figure out which package
(either amarok or any of its engines) to configure first.

I tried a patch, but one also needs to solve buffering problems

Bug#457192: ipmitool bugs

2007-12-25 Thread Matthew Johnson
Dear Duncan,

I am the new maintainer for ipmitool in Debian and I have uploaded the
most recent release, which fixes a number of bugs we had reported, so
thanks for that. However, there are still a number of bugs which aren't
fixed by this. Firstly there are a couple which I have applied patches
for to the version in Debian, which I thought you would appreciate
knowing about. You can find the bugs with patches at [1] and [2].

However, there is still one reported bug which exists in the latest
package for which we don't yet have a solution. The bug is documented at
[3] including a typescript of the event. If you need any help or more
information from the submitter I will happily get in touch and forward
you any other details (or you can contact them directly, but it would be
useful if you could CC [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I am doing so that we
keep a log of what's happening on the subject).

Thanks, and have a good Christmas,
Matt

 Yes please. We'll care then what to do with the problem in question.
 I'm not sure if this is a missing feature or a bug.

It is partly missing documentation. In order to use UTF-8 encoded
stuff, you have to enable the propper font encodings. In the present
case this means that you have to load textcomp.sty, which then enables
TS1 encoding:

\documentclass{report}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{textcomp}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage{lmodern}
\begin{document}
To convert from °C to °F, the following formula can be used:
\end{document}

lmodern.sty is only used because it provides the best T1/TS1-encoded,
CM-like fonts.

This way has the advantage that the actual degree-sign from the font
is used instead of something like $^{\circ}$.

 dpkg-genchanges should compare the revision number in debian/changelog against
 the previous one (if any) to choose whether the source must be included or
 not. Right now, it chooses to include the sources only if the revision

Thanks for the clarification.

I was unaware of the release manager route, I thought they used their
own overriding metatags, and only tech-ctte had power over the
maintainer for the BTS tags tied explicitly to a package.

Is this documented somewhere, so that next time I can maybe prove my

Bug#452462: update-bootsystem-insserv violates sysv-rc policy, breaking init sequence

2007-12-25 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
retitle 452462 insserv generate incorrect shutdown sequence
thanks

[Martin Braure de Calignon]
 Ok I see, so why not keep the current scripts ? I mean not rename
 the S to K ? Doesn't insserv know how to deal with S script in 0
 and 6 runlevel ?

Well, I change the S* to K* because the boot system itself is
hardwired to call the S* with 'stop' as the argument for runlevel 0
and 6, which is very confusing to those of use that know the sysv boot
system, and that all S* scripts should be called with the 'start'
argument, and all K* scripts should be called with the 'stop'
argument. The Debian boot system got it wrong, and I hope we can fix
it when we move to dependency based boot sequencing.

Happy hacking,

Bug#408491: insserv: Boot pauses until a key is pressed

2007-12-25 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

reassign 408491 sysv-rc
retitle 408491 Enabling concurrent boot need better documentation
thanks

After giving this a bit more thought, I conclude that the report is
really about the problems with enabling concurrent booting, and not
related to insserv at all. The only fix I see for this is to improve
the documentation of the CONCURRENCY option, to make sure its users
are aware that they need to check the sequence values for all boot
scripts before they enable it.

Because of this, I reassign it to the sysv-rc package, which is the
package implementing the CONCURRENCY option.

Happy hacking,

Bug#457764: xemacs21: CVE-2007-6109 buffer overflow via a large precision value in an integer format string

2007-12-25 Thread Nico Golde
Package: xemacs21
Severity: grave
Tags: security

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities Exposures) id was
published for xemacs21.

CVE-2007-6109[0]:
| Stack-based buffer overflow in emacs allows user-assisted attackers to
| cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly have
| unspecified other impact via a large precision value in an integer
| format string specifier to the format function, as demonstrated via a
| certain emacs -batch -eval command line.

We believed that xemacs21 is unaffected by this first but it
turned out (Thanks to Florian) that it actually is but at a
differen place:
src/doprnt.c:

  /* Mostly reconstruct the spec and use sprintf() to
 format the string. */

  *p++ = '%';
  if (spec-plus_flag)   *p++ = '+';
  if (spec-space_flag)  *p++ = ' ';
  if (spec-number_flag) *p++ = '#';
  if (spec-minus_flag)  *p++ = '-';
  if (spec-zero_flag)   *p++ = '0';

  if (spec-minwidth = 0)
p = long_to_string (p, spec-minwidth);
  if (spec-precision = 0)
{
  *p++ = '.';
  p = long_to_string (p, spec-precision);
}

  if (strchr (double_converters, ch))
{
  *p++ = ch;
  *p++ = '\0';
  sprintf (text_to_print, constructed_spec, arg.d);
}
  else
{
  *p++ = 'l';   /* Always use longs with sprintf() */
  *p++ = ch;
  *p++ = '\0';

  if (strchr (unsigned_int_converters, ch))
sprintf (text_to_print, constructed_spec, arg.ul);
  else
sprintf (text_to_print, constructed_spec, arg.l);
}

If you fix this vulnerability please also include the CVE id
in your changelog entry.

Kind regards

2007-12-25 Thread Tim Retout

retitle 441326 f-spot: Ships extra copies of icons
kthxbye

In the latest version of f-spot, the SVG icon is only shipped in
'scalable' directories. However, all the 'apps' icons are included
twice, in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/
and /usr/share/f-spot/icons/hicolor/.

This is probably unnecessary - the ones in /usr/share/f-spot are unused,
I think.

 Well, yes, of course.  But don't I get to try and convince you that, at
 least the next time, you shouldn't deliberately downgrade unstable with
 a known bug?  This is *exactly* the sort of thing which experimental is
 for...is there a reason you object to doing it?

I already told you I prefer a driver that support all available devices than a
driver with fancy resolutions that does not support a third of the devices it
used to support before.

Also, I politly proposed you to try radeonhd which has your so-important
resolutions (I believe).

Now I don't think this conversation has any reason to follow.

Bug#457765: Shell quotes wrong in dash.1 man page in Unicode environment

2007-12-25 Thread Teemu Likonen
Package: dash
Version: 0.5.4-4
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Shell quotes ' and ` are displayed wrong in dash.1 man page in Unicode
environment. Explanation:

In the groff syntax a non-escaped Ascii apostrophe (') is always logical
(English) right single quotation mark or apostrophe. In Unicode
environment (e.g. UTF-8 terminal or Postscript) it is displayed as
U+2019 RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK. In non-Unicode environment it is
displayed as U+0027 APOSTROPHE.

Similarly, in the groff syntax a non-escaped grave accent (`) is always
logical (English) left single quotation mark. In Unicode environment it
is displayed as U+2018 LEFT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK and in non-Unicode
environment as U+0060 GRAVE ACCENT.

When referreing to shell's single quote (') the groff character code
\(aq should always be used. It displays correctly in all environments.
Shell's command substitution mark (`) aka. backtick or backquote
must be written as \(ga in groff code.

Patch is attached to fix this in dash.1 man page. Patch file is meant to
be added to debian/diff directory and should apply nicely to Debian dash
package version 0.5.4-4.

Bug#457768: libparted1.7-1: doesn't correctly recognizes an hp 32M SecureDigital

2007-12-25 Thread Luca Capello
Package: libparted1.7-1
Version: 1.7.1-5.1
Severity: important

Hello,

I'm not sure the cause is libparted1.7-1, but this is the common factor
between gnu-fdisk and gparted, the two programs that shows this error.
Strangely enough, the comman line parted itself works correctly. Please
reassign to whatever the correct package is in case :-)

I wanted to replace the vfat partition on my hp 32M SD with an ext3,
but gnu-fdisk wrongly recognizes the disk geometry:

gnu-cfdisk suffers the same problem, however it recognizes that the SD

1, thus the difference in the byte size:

 There perhaps should be a flag to create directories as needed
 $ scp .ssh/id_dsa.pub jidanni2:.ssh/authorized_keys
 Password: xx
 scp: .ssh/authorized_keys: No such file or directory

This would involve an scp protocol extension to pass the flag across to
the other side, and is thus covered by this OpenSSH FAQ entry:

  2.10 - Will you add [foo] to scp?

  Short Answer: no.

  Long Answer: scp is not standardized. The closest thing it has to a
  specification is what rcp does. Since the same command is used on
  both ends of the connection, adding features or options risks breaking
  interoperability with other implementations.

  New features are more likely in sftp, since the protocol is
  standardized (well, a draft standard), extensible, and the client and
  server are decoupled.

Cheers,

Bug#457771: hplip: hp-setup fails to find PPD file

It is quite possible that this problem is not really in hp-setup but in
CUPS. Or maybe in some combination of setups on this particular system.

I get an interesting error message when I run hp-setup with the C
locale:

error: Invalid locale: C.utf8

So I suppose it tries to use UTF-8, but I have no idea why it tried to
talk to CUPS in 8859-1.

Bug#457769: /usr/bin/winecfg: winecfg does not allow non-ASCII characters in paths

I'm trying to enter the path to my picture folder in the desktop integration
tab, but winecfg refuses to accept the Spanish word for it, which is
Imágenes. Both typing the path manually and using the browse dialog work,
until Apply or Accept are clicked on, when the previous path is restored.
Any path not containing an accented letter seems to work.

Besides this bug, it would be very nice if winecfg would pre-load these paths
using xdg-user-dir, when available.

Bug#457772: optipng: less output in non-verbose mode should be kept on screen

2007-12-25 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: optipng
Version: 0.5.5-1
Severity: wishlist

IMHO, optipng outputs too much useless information, e.g. lines
of the form:

  zc = 1  zm = 9  zs = 2  f = 5 IDAT too big

so that it is more difficult to notice useful information. Such lines
should not be kept on screen, i.e. OptiPNG should output a \r instead
of a \n after IDAT too big. See the attached patch (I've tried it
only with upstream source). Note that:

  * The IDAT too big from the previous line is not erased (one
can see that as a feature, meaning that the previous line gave
IDAT too big).

  * When redirecting the output to a file, the \r will still be
sent instead of \n. This makes the result consistent with
what one gets on a terminal, but one may want to detect if
the output is on a terminal and choose to output either a \r
or a \n (however, when redirecting stdout to a file, one may
prefer the -v option, for which \n is always output).

Bug#457773: in some case, thunar won't reduce its windows size

When a file is created in a given directory (and maybe in a given
mount point), for example, when decompressing archive with such files in

reduce size then go back.

Bug#457776: liblivemedia-dev: undefined symbol: _ZNK6Medium8isSourceEv

2007-12-25 Thread Michael Nival
Package: liblivemedia-dev
Version: 2007.12.07-1
Severity: important

When using the package to build a module, it is impossible to use the resulting
module. I get the following error undefined symbol: _ZNK6Medium8isSourceEv

By recompiling the package by removing the patch 010_static_link.diff and
reinstalling the compilation of my modules happens consistently well and its
performance goes
without error.

Thanks.

Bug#457777: gnome-screensaver: does sometime not display login-dialog, locking out user

2007-12-25 Thread Tobias Frost
Package: gnome-screensaver
Version: 2.20.0-2
Severity: normal

Not reproducable, but at a frequent level, I get the following
behaviour:

After the screen is (auto-)locked, i press the shift key to login again.
But sometimes the login screen is not appearing. However, the keystroke
is recognized: The screensaver artworks freezes; but no dialog is
appearing.

This is really annoying, as the only solution -- if no network
connection is a hand -- is to hard-off the laptop. The serverity is
choosen, as this can lead to data loss (unsafed documents) or even
corrupted filesystems. (I use a cryted fs, so this is making me
a hard time every time I have to put the system down that hard.)

sshing into the affected system show that the screensaver process is
running at 100% (which is probably ok). Killing the process
with SIGKILL will eventually make the login dialog appear.

I have the impression, that the OpenGL screensavers are more likely to
expose the bugs, but this can only be an personal impression.

Bug#455084: sa-compile dependencies

Just seen the same dependency problem at Planet Debian -
http://blog.drinsama.de/erich/en/linux/2007122403-spamassassin-precompiled-rules.html

I think rather different dependencies of ...bin/sa-compile could be
solved by splitting it into a separate binary package -- with its own
set of deps.

Thanks, Andrey.

Reassigning. Further (as Frank explained) there is any easy work
around and he explained that it is not easy to fix - tagging
wontfix. If you disagree call back.

 Running latex on the following produces an error message division by
 zero. Putting height= first and angle= second, it works.

 \documentclass{article}
 \usepackage{graphicx}
 \begin{document}

 Package: cpufrequtils

 Justification: renders package unusable

 The script init.d/loadcpufreq is disabled by default, so no modules for
 cpu frequency scaling are loaded. This makes init.d/cpufrequtils fail
 as well.

 If I read REDAME.Debian correctly this is not the desired behaviour.
 loadcpufreq should be enabled by default and if someone wishes to
 override this he should create a file /etc/default/loadcpufreq like
 the provided example.

 I guess in the loadcpufreq script a default ENABLED=true is missing.

damn, you're right...
thanks for spotting it so quickly, will upload an new package asap
