Bug#474339: dpkg bug related to SE Linux

2008-04-09 Thread Russell Coker
The following patch fixes the problem.

scontext is allocated by matchpathcon(3) and needs to be freed by the caller.
If it's not set to NULL before the attempted allocation then it'll keep the
previous value (which had been freed) and then you get a double-free.

Bug#474386: Stability problems still in SVN, but not in etch qemu

2008-04-09 Thread Daniel Dickinson
SVN revision 4183 compiled from source exhibits the same behaviour, but
the qemu from etch (leaving everything else except the sparc bios that
needs newer qemu at lenny or unstable (trying to see if newer version
fixed lenny)) doesn't appear to. That is not entirely clear yet
because determining it's okay takes longer than it fails.

The disk image I have for 98se (which I regenerated after I first
experienced problems, think maybe it was the image), consistently dies
(the vm that is, not a crash but a vm hang with mouse and keyboard in
host unresponsive, but switching vt brings back X response and
keyboard) within the install or two (varies) of a couple of 98se
updates. Of course this session that is working with the etch qemu
could just be luck, but considering how consistently quickly the newer
qemu dies, I am optimistic.

At a wild guess I would think the assembler rewriting that has been
happening is the culprit.

For my next trick I will try the current -testing qemu and see what
happens. If it works then the problem is -unstable (0.9.1) and it
means I would have upgraded qemu to -unstable but forgotten that I
had, before the problems started, probably for some other issue. Still
since -unstable goes into -testing even if -testing works, a broken
-unstable isn't good (actually it's upstream which makes things more
difficult).

Now when pressing it I only get some logs from acpid into syslog, nothing

Is that really all? No other logs of powersaved e.g. when it starts.
I'm wondering if the debug log is working at all.
Do you get any messages in the syslog, if you run
powersaved -v31 -f /var/run/acpid.socket

I do not use kde or gnome (I use Windowmaker), so no powermanagement tool
 from these is running.

Executing powersave -u as root still works, it suspends and locks the
 xscreensaver on resume.

powersaved -u does not react on events itself. It simply sends a
Suspend() or Hibernate() request to hal. But it's good to know, that
that works.

The NEWS.Debian file tells me that powersaved no longer does suspend-things,
but installing pm-utils did not fix the problem either, and I was not able
to find a place to look for further config-changes I might have to do now
to get my laptop back into a usable state.

Interesting enough, you should already have pm-utils installed, as hal
depends on it. It's strange that you had to manually install it.

Could you please run the hal daemon in debug mode, and check if it
forwards the button presses to powersaved:

hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#475121: For kernel 2.6.18 qemu can't create and configure tap devices as non-root

2008-04-09 Thread Daniel Dickinson
Package: qemu
Version: 0.8.2-5lenny1
Severity: normal

As of kernel 2.6.18 the tun module was changed to disallow non-root
configuration of /dev/net/tun (e.g. for tapX devices). This means that unless
one sets the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability on the appropriate qemu binaries, qemu
must be run as root in order to be able to create tapX devices.

I have been using

find /usr/bin/qemu-* -type f -a ! -type l -a print0 | xargs -0 --replace setcap
net_cap_admin=ep as root

to correct this. It picks up a couple of extra binaries and setcap is in
libcap2 which only in unstable, but it works (allows non-root execution of qemu
while still creating tapX devices on-the-fly; combined with sudoers and
/etc/qemu-ifup set appropriately I can run qemu and get my automatically
network devices autocreated and added to my bridge without having to run as
root).

 1) Press / in order to start searching

 4) Instead of making the last letter disappear it adds some ^?

What terminal are you using? Also, could you please send me the output
 of this command:

 echo $TERM

I've started to see this as well in both xterm and KDE konsole after
changing $TERM to xterm-256color; with TERM=xterm the backspace key
works correctly. Unfortunately, without the -256color setting colors do
not as good as possible in `emacs -nw'. Other applications work fine
with TERM set to xterm-256color.

What would be the benefit for it? Why would you like to see that

Bug#475125: xen-tools: /etc/rpm/platform setup needed on 32bit Fedora domU running in 64bit dom0

2008-04-09 Thread Giovanni Biscuolo
Package: xen-tools
Version: 3.9-2
Severity: normal

After installing a Fedora 7 domU using an i386 architecture in a x86_64 host I
was not able to use
default repositories configurations.

All current repository config use $basesearch as architecture string, for
example in
/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-development.repo:

 [development]
 name=Fedora - Development
 failovermethod=priority

#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/development/$basearch/os/

mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=rawhidearch=$basearch
 [...]

If /etc/rpm/platform is not found yum (and rpm I think) guesses the
architecture (aka $basesearch) from the kernel,
this way trying to install packages in a i386 domU running inside a x86_64 dom0
messes up things.

I had to manually create /etc/rpm/platform containing this line:

i386-fedora-linux-gnu

and now all is runing well.

Sorry but I was not able to find the bits that places /etc/yum.conf in the
created image, that problably should be
the place where to set the /etc/rpm/platform file.

Ciao.
Giovanni.

This bug is a reminder of what needs to be done.

In principle, statcvs does not depend on any features found in
proprietary JVMs, so it should not depend on Sun's. Unfortunately, due to
#459281 (at least, as no further testing is possible as long as this one is
not fixed), it cannot work with free JVMs.

When that is fixed, statcvs should move to main.

The bug is fixed now. Please move the package to main.

Bug#461489: A clarification; X settings for numlock-on not useful on keyboards that lack a numlock key.

2008-04-09 Thread Ray Dillinger
A clarification: This laptop has no numlock key as such - not even
in its overlay keyset. The only way to toggle the numlock is to plug
in an external (USB) keyboard and press the key on that - or to have
the numlock setting inherited from my standard X settings, which is
what was happening here.

Thus, every time I booted up, my X settings were setting the numlock
state (and by implication the fn-key state), and there's no way on the
keyboard to unset it.

The fix then is to change my X settings so as to NOT have numlock-
by-default (which is my preference on fullsize keyboards).

Bear

Bug#411888: still same hwclock problem

2008-04-09 Thread Michael . Grosser
Hi!

I noticed something interesting: I have a Shuttle barebone that is 3 years
old. Chip set is: VIA K8M800.

I have another Shuttle barebone that is brand-new.
Chip set is: NVIDIA nForce 630a

The funny thing is: Both computers are running with Debian Etch.
I installed Debian Etch R0 as identically on both computers as I could.

But: On an chip set VIA K8M800 the command hwclock --show works fine.
On a chip set NVIDIA nForce 630a the commans hwclock --show produces
the output select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out.

(I also tested Lenny and Sid, and the system clock also with
those operating systems does not run correctly.)

I think, this bit of information is very useful for that programmer
who is to fix the bug: I think, it is a simple incompatibility to
some kind of hardware.

How I make a workaround that works for me is another issue wich
I still have to solve, but in the long term, I think, it is important
that someone fixes the bug, because, it *IS* a bug.

Michael

I just checked the boot order in unstable on a machine with dependency
based boot sequencing enabled, and discovered a problem with the
init.d scripts provided in this package.

You should probably file a similar bug with the cyrus-common-2.2 package. We
usually copy whatever they do.

Indeed this is fixed in upstream CVS.
Unless i'm mistaken, 14.1.0 is planned for release soon.

(Where did you get that information, out of curiosity? I didn't see
it on upstream's website anywhere, or in the mailing list archives,
but maybe I wasn't searching very well.)

Would you rather have a patched debian version in-between?

No hurry; I didn't originally know it had been fixed upstream until I
did the secondary research, that's all. If it takes them a long time
to release a fix, then it might be nice to have an intermediary
package, but I can always do local patches on my own, too, so it's not
a big deal.

Good question. All other our archs seem to define wchar_t as int,
while on arm it's unsigned int. Handling signed values
on arm is slower than unsigned and negative values for wchar_t make
little point.

The gcc manpage seems to indicate that -fshort-wchar creates
ABI incompatability, and is only usefull for wine programming
(since windowsen wchar_t is unsigned short). Why in practice it's
only causing problems on arm eabi with gcc = 4.3 is weird.

PS: I wonder if gcc shouldn't dump -fshort-wchar in such situation. The
option doesn't make sense if it will always lead to this error.

Theoretically it is valid option on arm eabi too, if you are not
linking against the system libraries (building kernel, bootloader or
static binaries with your own libc-like functionality ).

Bug#472584:

2008-04-09 Thread Barry Tennison

Dear Bastian:

Many thanks for responding to the sketchy bug reports. Thanks to your
help here, I have managed to get the linux-image-2.6.24-1-xen-686 kernel
running as a domU kernel.

The only remaining issue seems to be that, for me, the domU console
(from xmcreate -c or from xm console) does not accept input; but that is
bearable.

I have listed the changes I made in a brief form below. I wonder
whether it might be worth making something like this available, perhaps
as a README.debian in /usr/share/doc/linux-image-2.6.24-N-xen-686 ?
It could (judging by quite a few mailing list posts) be of some use to
those who, like me, prefer to use testing (lenny) as their dom0, for
reasons of security and relative stability.

Thanks again for your help, and for all your debian efforts.

Barry Tennison

***
The following may be needed to convert a debian installation using
2.6.18 kernels to use a 2.6.24 kernel.

(a) use a 2.6.18 xen kernel in the dom0 (see bug#466492)

(b) modify the relevant xen domU .cfg files by:
  * changing entries like root=/dev/hdaN ro to root=/dev/xvdaN ro
  * adding (or expanding) a line to read: extra=console=hvc0
  * possibly adding to the extra= line something like rootdelay=5
(increase or decrease the 5 seconds according to what works)

(c) in the domU rootfs, aptitude install linux-modules-2.6.24-1-xen-686

I just checked the boot order in unstable on a machine with dependency
based boot sequencing enabled, and discovered a problem with the
init.d scripts provided in this package. It ask for a stop symlink in
rcS.d/, which is always wrong. Also, it need a mounted /usr/, and
should thus depend on $remote_fs during startup. It should be stopped
before sendsigs kills all processes, and thus should depend on
$remote_fs during shutdown too.

Here is a patch to solve this issue.

rather than updating this package, the firmware should be integrated
into the firmware-nonfree of the kernel team. With your permission,

does not work with multi-line configuration options, which are
supported by PowerDNS.

For example, my pdns.conf contains the following:

gmysql-basic-query=select records.content, records.ttl, records.prio, \
records.type, records.domain_id, records.name from records \
inner join domains on records.domain_id=domains.id \
where records.active='yes' and domains.active='yes' and \
records.type='%s' and records.name='%s'

After the upgrade, pdns.conf.local contained the following:

gmysql-basic-query=select
records.content,
records.ttl,
records.prio,
\

Resulting in breakage, best identified by the following message
in syslog:

Apr 9 12:03:33 whisky pdns[20485]: Fatal error: Trying to set
unexisting parameter 'records.content,'

The mISDN init system is a huge abomination. My fear is that if we add
this to Debian now, we are going to support whatever broken scripts

reason why mISDN is currently blocked from testing -- it is not release

Fortunately mISDN is already being rewritten so it doesn't need that

prevents the module fron hanging up CPU upon loading.

Yuck, that should not really do anything. Will investigate.

Bug#474776: nautilus-image-converter: Does not work with nautilus 2.22

thanks

2008/4/7, Julien Valroff [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Hi,

Hi Julien,

Current version does not work with nautilus 2.22 (which is currently only
 available in
 experimental).
 Ubuntu has a version 0.3.0 which depends on libnautilus-extension = 2.21
and does work with the latest release of nautilus.

I am not sure where this version comes from (I have found it on some random
 website,
but *not* on the upstream website). The upstream SVN doesn't seem to be
 updated.

I might have found a clue. Probably, upstream has moved from bitron.ch
to gnome.org. Thus, the watchfile didn't catch this location change.
The new version is available on svn.gnome.org, but I didn't find any
tarball suitable for the watchfile.

Maybe you could package it and upload it to experimental in order to be ready
 once
nautilus 2.22 is uploaded to unstable?

Sure I'll do, as soon as I get some time :)

Thanks,
David

Bug#474698: partman-base: Inconsistent output if sector size != 512 bytes

2008-04-09 Thread Frans Pop
(No need to CC me on replies to the BR.)

On Tuesday 08 April 2008, Ferenc Wagner wrote:
I could go on to replace PED_SECTOR_SIZE_DEFAULT with dev-sector_size
throughout partman-base/parted_server.c, but I'm getting suspicious.
Isn't there a good reason for this state of affairs?

Looks like this could possibly be a bug introduced by revision r37468 [1],
which changed PED_SECTOR_SIZE to PED_SECTOR_SIZE_DEFAULT (partman-base 84).
Looks like that change was made for compatibility with libparted 1.7.

Whether changing it to dev-sector_size is correct depends of course on what
the actual definition of PED_SECTOR_SIZE was in prior libparted versions.

It could also be that the problem has always been there and that the use of
PED_SECTOR_SIZE was always not correct (though maybe only in some places).

This certainly needs to be checked very carefully. A good start could be to
check whether the Sarge installer also has the bug as that has older
versions of libparted and partman-base.

Otavio: you did that change; any comments?

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#474737: Etch netboot installer does not detect ide harddisk

On Tuesday 08 April 2008, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Problem seems to be that the piix module is not getting loaded, which
is needed for your IDE controller.
What happens if you try to modprobe that manually?

There are two ways to load: Selecting ata_piix on driver menu on (console
 1) or with modprobe ata_piix on console 2. But nothings helps. The
module is in the lsmod-list, but no device /dev/hdx exists.

I asked you to try the piix module, not the ata_piix module!

This failure happens on a virtual machine and on real hardware also.

I think the reason for the failure is the ide-harddisk, regardless
whether virtual or real. I will enclose log-files from a dell laptop
 insp7000 here.

No, the problem is in the kernel drivers.

I see ata_piix is loaded for this laptop, but again, you need the piix
module. Please try loading that. If ata_piix is loaded automatically, then
try removing it first with 'modprobe -r ata_piix'.

As you will see, the virtual machine is much more modern :-)

Yes, but also more unpredictable because of the emulation layers.

You could try a daily built businesscard or netinst
  image
[1], just to see if that does detect the disks. That has a 2.6.24
  kernel.

This doesn't work at all, because of module mismatch between the kernel
 and the DVD.

1) There are no daily built DVD images.
2) There is no module mismatch with current weekly built DVD images.
There was more than a week ago, but that was fixed.

Please try a *daily* built *netinst or businesscard* *CD* image.

Bug#475141: Addition: lingering file in /etc/powerdns/pdns.d

2008-04-09 Thread Martijn Grendelman
One addition:

On one occasion, pdns.conf.local was overwritten without any questions,
probably because it hadn't been manually added before.

However, on a different server, I was asked whether pdns.conf.local
should be overwritten. Choosing 'no', a file containing the broken
config, named 'pdns.local.ucf-dist' was left in /etc/powerdns/pdns.d.

Since all files in this directory are read by PowerDNS, leaving a broken
file there (or a file that contains any unwanted configuration; why else
would the admin choose not to overwrite pdns.local...) still breaks the
installation.

No temporary or backup files should be left in /etc/powerdns/pdns.d.

Bug#475136: iceweasel: Iceweasel crashes when printing certain Web pages

Iceweasel 3 beta 5 crashed when printing a Web page. Unfortunately, someone
else was using Iceweasel at the time, and so I don't have the URI of the Web
page with which to reproduce the problem (backtrace below).

The print dialogue was entered, the print command was then selected and
Iceweasel crashed immediately.

the backtrace to be helpful. Iceweasel-dbg was installed. The backtrace was
produced by the Gnome desktop (I have iceweasel-gnome-support installed as
well).

Bug#474945: cron-apt: easy support for debdelta

Hi

Thanks for the information. I think actually your solution is the
best one. I'm not fully sure how to make this work better than this. :)

But suggestions are of course welcome.

Attached is a patch to allow an initramfs to use a root filesystem as a

is mounted, then the loopback filesystem is mounted from the Windows

Thanks for making this package - it's very helpful.

I'm very glad to hear this.

Unfortunately, the installation is noisy: prompting about the licence
happens during the preinst rather than during the dpkg Preconfiguring

from config or templates or something, but the result is that the
installation hangs until the question is answered.

Sorry but I'm a bit busy recently so I haven't time to

If possible, please let me know what do you mean with

Bug#457777: [gnome-screensaver] does not display login-dialog, locking out user

2008-04-09 Thread Tobias Frost
I just missed the hint for #420339 to include in the prevoius mail.

There is a difference in my case: The screensaver works as usual,
showing its animations but suddendly it wilkl just freeze. Mostly, The
animation will stop and then
the bug is occuring.

Also seen, that the screen is blank (black) when the bug appears (backlight
working) .
But this could be some power saving as well.

 Hi,

During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on i386.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3 is now
the default on most architectures (even if it's not the case on i386 yet).
Feel free to downgrade this bug to 'important' if your package is only built
on i386, and this bug is specific to gcc 4.3 (i.e the package builds fine with
 gcc 4.2).

 Relevant part:

That's a bug in libshout: It's .la file references the libspeex .la file
which does not exist anymore in the new version. A binNMU or sourceful

Bug#443115: [patch] seahorse should unless running gnome

2008-04-09 Thread Martin Bock
I run neat and lean icewm from my private .xsession. I do neither want
nor dbus or seohorse or any other gnome thing. To mitigate the problem,
I suggest the following:

 begin diff
--- 60seahorse.orig 2008-04-09 11:34:32.0 +0200
+++ 60seahorse  2008-04-09 11:35:10.0 +0200

+if [ -n $GNOMERC -a -x $SEAHORSE ]; then
STARTUP=$SEAHORSE --execute $STARTUP
 fi
 end diff

Indeed the Xsession.d scripts are sourced in the sequence as /bin/ls
displays (cf. /etc/X11/Xsession, the run_parts () function). That means
60seahorse can check for 55gnome-session_gnomerc. More basic would be to
go for BASENAMESTARTUP but I do not know the significance or
implications of this.

Now when a user selects gnome from kdm/gdm, seahorse will be started. If
a user selects any other session, seahorse will not be started. If a the
user wants to have seahorse w/o gnome, a private .xsession can be
written, which is the generic way to configure for special taste.

Bug#475139: Inconsistencies should not cause a tape to be marked in error

2008-04-09 Thread Wouter Verhelst
Package: bacula-sd
Version: 1.38.11-8
Severity: normal

Hi,

(first, I'm not sure whether this is the right package to submit
against; feel free to reassign if necessary).

When a bacula tape becomes inconsistent with what bacula has recorded
about that particular tape, for any reason (e.g., when there was an
error writing to the database because the disk filled, or when the
director crashed when a backup job was in progress), then bacula will
mark the tape as being 'in error'. This makes it impossible to
distinguish between such a case and a case of a /real/ tape error.

It would probably be best to create a new state, 'Inconsistent' or some
such, to be assigned to tapes of which the data as stored in the
database does not correspond to the data as found on the tape itself.
This would make it easier for a system administrator to figure out what
the correct course of action is when a failure occurs (e.g., manually
recycle the tape, or throw it away in case of a /real/ error).

mail0.vicoop.com (which is the host I'm debugging) acted both as a
smarthost for beczulka, and as the intermediate destination for the
message (subsequently fetched by beczulka).

Notice how the Received line added by master.debian.org got eaten by
mail0. I'm 100% certain that master did send the Received header,
because I sniffed the SMTP dialogue.

Interestingly, the Received header added by beczulka did NOT get eaten
when the message got relayed by mail0 for the first time. This suggests
that the header only gets eaten when the status is none but not when
it's pass.

Do you still intend to adopt the Debian Parrot packages? From what I

The group is in place, and we have 3 Debian Developers as sponsors.
We've also updated the packages, and have them ready to upload. What
we're waiting for now is confirmation that one final Debian bug report
has been resolved (#382147). For that we need a working ia64 box.

It would be nice add a little update in that bug report and in #430284,
so other people know they are being worked on.

All other reported bugs have been resolved and are noted as such in the
updated changelog file. Once we have this final bug confirmed, we'll
start submitting monthly Debian packages along with our monthly releases.

Nice!

The print dialogue was entered, the print command was then selected and
 Iceweasel crashed immediately.

You are welcome to send this upstream if there is enough useful information in
the backtrace to be helpful. Iceweasel-dbg was installed. The backtrace was
produced by the Gnome desktop (I have iceweasel-gnome-support installed as

Could you also install libcairo2-dbg and send a new backtrace with this

Bug#475145: zoneminder: Is not linked against ffmpeg

2008-04-09 Thread Max Krasilnikov
Package: zoneminder
Version: 1.23.2-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

ZoneMinder is dependent on ffmpeg, but is not linked against it. It is
clear from apache error.log:

[Wed Apr 09 11:52:47 2008] [error] [client 62.149.31.20] You should configure
with the --with-ffmpeg option and rebuild to use
 this functionality., referer:
http://videoserv.colocall.net/zm/index.php?view=watchfeedmode=mid=1scale=100control=

I have fixed this by re-building zoneminder on my box when
libavcodec-dev libavformat-dev libavutil-dev installed. So zoneminde can
create not only mjpeg, but flash, mpeg and other supported by ffmpeg
streams.
It will be great to build package for repository with ffmpeg support.
Thanx!

Bug#474139: libneon27: Breaks access to some Subversion repositories

[Please keep the submitter in Cc: when replying to bugs, otherwise
they can't see you've answered unless polling the web interface]

Do you know anything from the server side? Searching on Google revealed
that others have similar problems in the past, which was solved by some
upgrade of Subversion on the server side.

I don't know much, apart that the admin isn't very active. The server
may be rather old, since it doesn't support some feature I wanted to
use at some point (forgot which), but since the problem appeared when
upgrading neon, my guess is that the fault isn't in the server.

IANAL, so please double check, but I am rather sure that at least in
the German legal context this does *not* create a contract. The
package offers the license (!) to use the font for certain purposes
and the user has either to accept the license or deny it (in the
latter case standard copyright applies, i.e. he probably cannot use
 the font at all).

Sorry but please elaborate here. I'm afraid I don't understand
you correctly at present.
