Bug#474386: Stability problems still in SVN, but not in etch qemu
SVN revision 4183 compiled from source exhibits the same behaviour, but the qemu from etch (leaving everything else except the sparc bios that needs newer qemu at lenny or unstable (trying to see if newer version fixed lenny)) doesn't appear to. That is not entirely clear yet because determining it's okay takes longer than it fails. The disk image I have for 98se (which I regenerated after I first experienced problems, think maybe it was the image), consistently dies (the vm that is, not a crash but a vm hang with mouse and keyboard in host unresponsive, but switching vt brings back X response and keyboard) within the install or two (varies) of a couple of 98se updates. Of course this session that is working with the etch qemu could just be luck, but considering how consistently quickly the newer qemu dies, I am optimistic. At a wild guess I would think the assembler rewriting that has been happening is the culprit. For my next trick I will try the current -testing qemu and see what happens. If it works then the problem is -unstable (0.9.1) and it means I would have upgraded qemu to -unstable but forgotten that I had, before the problems started, probably for some other issue. Still since -unstable goes into -testing even if -testing works, a broken -unstable isn't good (actually it's upstream which makes things more difficult). -- And that's my crabbing done for the day. Got it out of the way early, now I have the rest of the afternoon to sniff fragrant tea-roses or strangle cute bunnies or something. -- Michael Devore GnuPG Key Fingerprint 86 F5 81 A5 D4 2E 1F 1C http://gnupg.org No more sea shells: Daniel's Webloghttp://cshore.wordpress.com signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Executing powersave -u as root still works, it suspends and locks the xscreensaver on resume. powersaved -u does not react on events itself. It simply sends a Suspend() or Hibernate() request to hal. But it's good to know, that that works. The NEWS.Debian file tells me that powersaved no longer does suspend-things, but installing pm-utils did not fix the problem either, and I was not able to find a place to look for further config-changes I might have to do now to get my laptop back into a usable state. Interesting enough, you should already have pm-utils installed, as hal depends on it. It's strange that you had to manually install it. Bug#475125: xen-tools: /etc/rpm/platform setup needed on 32bit Fedora domU running in 64bit dom0
Package: xen-tools Version: 3.9-2 Severity: normal After installing a Fedora 7 domU using an i386 architecture in a x86_64 host I was not able to use default repositories configurations. All current repository config use $basesearch as architecture string, for example in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-development.repo: [development] name=Fedora - Development failovermethod=priority #baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/development/$basearch/os/ mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=rawhidearch=$basearch [...] If /etc/rpm/platform is not found yum (and rpm I think) guesses the architecture (aka $basesearch) from the kernel, this way trying to install packages in a i386 domU running inside a x86_64 dom0 messes up things. I had to manually create /etc/rpm/platform containing this line: i386-fedora-linux-gnu and now all is runing well. Sorry but I was not able to find the bits that places /etc/yum.conf in the created image, that problably should be the place where to set the /etc/rpm/platform file. Ciao. Bug#463520: statcvs should move away from contrib

Bug#461489: A clarification; X settings for numlock-on not useful on keyboards that lack a numlock key.
A clarification: This laptop has no numlock key as such - not even in its overlay keyset. The only way to toggle the numlock is to plug in an external (USB) keyboard and press the key on that - or to have the numlock setting inherited from my standard X settings, which is what was happening here. Thus, every time I booted up, my X settings were setting the numlock state (and by implication the fn-key state), and there's no way on the keyboard to unset it. The fix then is to change my X settings so as to NOT have numlock- by-default (which is my preference on fullsize keyboards). Bug#411888: still same hwclock problem
Hi! I noticed something interesting: I have a Shuttle barebone that is 3 years old. Chip set is: VIA K8M800. I have another Shuttle barebone that is brand-new. Chip set is: NVIDIA nForce 630a The funny thing is: Both computers are running with Debian Etch. I installed Debian Etch R0 as identically on both computers as I could. But: On an chip set VIA K8M800 the command hwclock --show works fine. On a chip set NVIDIA nForce 630a the commans hwclock --show produces the output select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out. (I also tested Lenny and Sid, and the system clock also with those operating systems does not run correctly.) I think, this bit of information is very useful for that programmer who is to fix the bug: I think, it is a simple incompatibility to some kind of hardware. How I make a workaround that works for me is another issue wich I still have to solve, but in the long term, I think, it is important that someone fixes the bug, because, it *IS* a bug. (Where did you get that information, out of curiosity? I didn't see it on upstream's website anywhere, or in the mailing list archives, but maybe I wasn't searching very well.) Would you rather have a patched debian version in-between? No hurry; I didn't originally know it had been fixed upstream until I did the secondary research, that's all. If it takes them a long time to release a fix, then it might be nice to have an intermediary package, but I can always do local patches on my own, too, so it's not a big deal. -Pascal --- Drake Wilson -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. The gcc manpage seems to indicate that -fshort-wchar creates ABI incompatability, and is only usefull for wine programming (since windowsen wchar_t is unsigned short). Why in practice it's only causing problems on arm eabi with gcc = 4.3 is weird. PS: I wonder if gcc shouldn't dump -fshort-wchar in such situation. The option doesn't make sense if it will always lead to this error. Theoretically it is valid option on arm eabi too, if you are not linking against the system libraries (building kernel, bootloader or static binaries with your own libc-like functionality ). -- rm -rf only sounds scary if you don't have backups -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#472584:
Dear Bastian: Many thanks for responding to the sketchy bug reports. Thanks to your help here, I have managed to get the linux-image-2.6.24-1-xen-686 kernel running as a domU kernel. The only remaining issue seems to be that, for me, the domU console (from xmcreate -c or from xm console) does not accept input; but that is bearable. I have listed the changes I made in a brief form below. I wonder whether it might be worth making something like this available, perhaps as a README.debian in /usr/share/doc/linux-image-2.6.24-N-xen-686 ? It could (judging by quite a few mailing list posts) be of some use to those who, like me, prefer to use testing (lenny) as their dom0, for reasons of security and relative stability. Thanks again for your help, and for all your debian efforts. Barry Tennison *** The following may be needed to convert a debian installation using 2.6.18 kernels to use a 2.6.24 kernel. (a) use a 2.6.18 xen kernel in the dom0 (see bug#466492) (b) modify the relevant xen domU .cfg files by: * changing entries like root=/dev/hdaN ro to root=/dev/xvdaN ro * adding (or expanding) a line to read: extra=console=hvc0 * possibly adding to the extra= line something like rootdelay=5 (increase or decrease the 5 seconds according to what works) (c) in the domU rootfs, aptitude install linux-modules-2.6.24-1-xen-686 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: pdns-server Version: 2.9.21-6 Severity: important After upgrading to 2.6.21-6, pdns configuration was broken. Ubuntu has a version 0.3.0 which depends on libnautilus-extension = 2.21 and does work with the latest release of nautilus. I am not sure where this version comes from (I have found it on some random website, but *not* on the upstream website). The upstream SVN doesn't seem to be updated. I might have found a clue. Probably, upstream has moved from bitron.ch to gnome.org. Thus, the watchfile didn't catch this location change. The new version is available on svn.gnome.org, but I didn't find any tarball suitable for the watchfile. Maybe you could package it and upload it to experimental in order to be ready once nautilus 2.22 is uploaded to unstable? Sure I'll do, as soon as I get some time :) Thanks, David -- . ''`. Isn't there a good reason for this state of affairs? Looks like this could possibly be a bug introduced by revision r37468 [1], which changed PED_SECTOR_SIZE to PED_SECTOR_SIZE_DEFAULT (partman-base 84). Looks like that change was made for compatibility with libparted 1.7. Whether changing it to dev-sector_size is correct depends of course on what the actual definition of PED_SECTOR_SIZE was in prior libparted versions. It could also be that the problem has always been there and that the use of PED_SECTOR_SIZE was always not correct (though maybe only in some places). This certainly needs to be checked very carefully. A good start could be to check whether the Sarge installer also has the bug as that has older versions of libparted and partman-base. Bug#474737: Etch netboot installer does not detect ide harddisk
On Tuesday 08 April 2008, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Problem seems to be that the piix module is not getting loaded, which is needed for your IDE controller. What happens if you try to modprobe that manually? There are two ways to load: Selecting ata_piix on driver menu on (console 1) or with modprobe ata_piix on console 2. But nothings helps. The module is in the lsmod-list, but no device /dev/hdx exists. I asked you to try the piix module, not the ata_piix module! This failure happens on a virtual machine and on real hardware also. I think the reason for the failure is the ide-harddisk, regardless whether virtual or real. I will enclose log-files from a dell laptop insp7000 here. No, the problem is in the kernel drivers. I see ata_piix is loaded for this laptop, but again, you need the piix module. Please try loading that. If ata_piix is loaded automatically, then try removing it first with 'modprobe -r ata_piix'. As you will see, the virtual machine is much more modern :-) Yes, but also more unpredictable because of the emulation layers. You could try a daily built businesscard or netinst image [1], just to see if that does detect the disks. That has a 2.6.24 kernel. This doesn't work at all, because of module mismatch between the kernel and the DVD. 1) There are no daily built DVD images. 2) There is no module mismatch with current weekly built DVD images. There was more than a week ago, but that was fixed. Please try a *daily* built *netinst or businesscard* *CD* image. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#475141: Addition: lingering file in /etc/powerdns/pdns.d
One addition: On one occasion, pdns.conf.local was overwritten without any questions, probably because it hadn't been manually added before. However, on a different server, I was asked whether pdns.conf.local should be overwritten. Choosing 'no', a file containing the broken config, named 'pdns.local.ucf-dist' was left in /etc/powerdns/pdns.d. Since all files in this directory are read by PowerDNS, leaving a broken file there (or a file that contains any unwanted configuration; why else would the admin choose not to overwrite pdns.local...) still breaks the installation. No temporary or backup files should be left in /etc/powerdns/pdns.d. smime.p7s Description: S/MIME Cryptographic Signature

To mitigate the problem, I suggest the following: begin diff --- 60seahorse.orig 2008-04-09 11:34:32.0 +0200 +++ 60seahorse 2008-04-09 11:35:10.0 +0200 @@ -2,7 +2,9 @@ SEAHORSE=/usr/bin/seahorse-agent -if [ -x $SEAHORSE ]; then +# check wether gnome is started, only then execute seahorse +# cf. /etc/X11/Xsession.d/55gnome-session_gnomerc +if [ -n $GNOMERC -a -x $SEAHORSE ]; then STARTUP=$SEAHORSE --execute $STARTUP fi end diff Indeed the Xsession.d scripts are sourced in the sequence as /bin/ls displays (cf. /etc/X11/Xsession, the run_parts () function). That means 60seahorse can check for 55gnome-session_gnomerc. More basic would be to go for BASENAMESTARTUP but I do not know the significance or implications of this. Now when a user selects gnome from kdm/gdm, seahorse will be started. If a user selects any other session, seahorse will not be started. If a the user wants to have seahorse w/o gnome, a private .xsession can be written, which is the generic way to configure for special taste. -- Martin Bock :wq -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#475139: Inconsistencies should not cause a tape to be marked in error
Package: bacula-sd Version: 1.38.11-8 Severity: normal Hi, (first, I'm not sure whether this is the right package to submit against; feel free to reassign if necessary). When a bacula tape becomes inconsistent with what bacula has recorded about that particular tape, for any reason (e.g., when there was an error writing to the database because the disk filled, or when the director crashed when a backup job was in progress), then bacula will mark the tape as being 'in error'. This makes it impossible to distinguish between such a case and a case of a /real/ tape error. It would probably be best to create a new state, 'Inconsistent' or some such, to be assigned to tapes of which the data as stored in the database does not correspond to the data as found on the tape itself. This would make it easier for a system administrator to figure out what the correct course of action is when a failure occurs (e.g., manually recycle the tape, or throw it away in case of a /real/ error). -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: arm (armv5tel) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-iop32x Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages bacula-sd depends on: ii bacula-common 1.38.11-8 Network backup, recovery and verif ii libacl12.2.41-1 Access control list shared library ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-13etch5 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc11:4.1.1-21GCC support library ii libssl0.9.80.9.8c-4etch1 SSL shared libraries ii libstdc++6 4.1.1-21 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libwrap0 7.6.dbs-13Wietse Venema's TCP wrappers libra ii mtx1.2.17rel-2 controls tape autochangers ii python 2.4.4-2 An interactive high-level object-o ii python2.4 2.4.4-3 An interactive high-level object-o ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-13compression library - runtime Versions of packages bacula-sd recommends: ii bacula-sd-pgsql [bacula-sd-to 1.38.11-8 Network backup, recovery and verif pn mt-st none (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. What we're waiting for now is confirmation that one final Debian bug report has been resolved (#382147). For that we need a working ia64 box. It would be nice add a little update in that bug report and in #430284, so other people know they are being worked on. All other reported bugs have been resolved and are noted as such in the updated changelog file.
