Bug#487254: manpages-dev: *scanf may set errno to ERANGE

[...] For information, dietlibc's scanf doesn't exhibit that behavior. On other Unices, it seems to vary, and it doesn't seem to be often clearly documented. Hi Stephane, Thanks for the note. I will look at this a bit more. I see you sent a note into the Austin list about this. Two things: it's alway worth CCing me on such notes, since I do follow Austin. second: you may make more headway by raising a proper bugreport against the standard -- these bug reports are called Aardvarks. Bug#480818: Don't build depend on libxul-dev

With pkg-config libxul it almost works. The embedded browser seems to load because it replaces the Loading... splash screen that Azureus displays, but all I get is a white background. It seems to be almost working though. I don't see any error messages on the console. Where do I go from here? It looks like all you need is to add the xpcom initialization code. The embedding variant needs explicit xpcom loading. You can check how it is done in impl_init() in mozilla-embed-single.cpp in epiphany-browser source, or xulrunner_init() in mozilla.cpp in kazehakase source. You will need to #include gtkmozembed_glue.cpp in the source file doing the initialization. Hi Mike, Thanks for your help so far. I'm starting to get the impression that modifying SWT-GTK to support xulrunner 1.9 is not a trivial amount of work, and that it may be a better plan until upstream supports xulrunner 1.9 explicitly. Since they'll be doing this work anyways, it's a duplication of effort for me to be doing it now, and they'll certainly do a better job of it than I will hacking and slashing code together. How close do you think I am to fixing this? If you'd care look at it yourself, the function that is failing is XPCOM.NS_NewLocalFile in Mozilla.create in Mozilla.java:332. which calls NS_1NewLocalFile in xpcom.cpp:94 which calls NS_NewLocalFile which returns Browser: org.eclipse.swt.SWTError: XPCOM error -1041039359 which corresponds to NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED. I couldn't immediately see the relation between this function and impl_init from mozilla-embed-single.cpp from epiphany-browser. Could you send your current patch against the last version of swt-gtk in unstable ? Mike -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#487490: linux-image-2.6.25-2-686: USB_PERSIST is enabled, but does not work
Package: linux-image-2.6.25-2-686 Version: 2.6.25-5 Severity: normal In 2.6.25 debian kernels, USB_PERSIST has been enabled, to make it possible to suspend with mounted usb storage filesystems which lose power during suspend. Even though the interface in /sys exists, and I write 1 to every device's persist file, I still lose the usb storage devices after resume as if I had suspended without USB_PERSIST. The result is journal commit I/O errors and risk of filesystem corruption. The storage devices in question are a usb SD card reader and a usb stick attached to a usb hub, which contains my / filesystem. I've done a little bit of digging and found someone who reported a suspiciously similar problem. In the thread a patch is mentioned: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.usb.general/2031/match=usb+persist+issue The patch was supposed to be submitted for 2.6.25, but the 2.6.25 debian-patched kernel sources don't seem to have it. I have not been able to test yet wether this patch fixes my problem. It turns out the opensync python module loads every file in the plugin directory. Therefore, the actual .py plugin was loading absolutely fine; it was the .pyc file spewing out the RuntimeError. It depends on the python version opensync-module-python was compiled with which is probably another bug with the python module packaging (the module should be compiled for every version in pyversions -s) but I'll ignore that here. Therefore this is a problem in opensync-module-python. I have set the severity to normal and not wishlist because .pyc files will have the same name as their .pyc counterpart, therefore causing name collision etc. This has been fixed upstream in the 0.30 branch[0]. I have taken the fix from there and made a patch for the 0.22 version that I think should be used until 0.30 hits Debian. Thanks, 0. http://opensync.org/changeset/1753#file2 (what a horribly long diff) Yes I noticed this when after un-installing that particular module I realised that the command had been adding members all the time and so the command did not exit with and error. I agree it is a somewhat misleading error message, but I am not sure how else you could handle it. Better than the application exiting with an error because it can't run a broken plug-in, no? Cheers for your help :) The irony is I don't even have a WinCE device, but that I loaded all modules by default. So for me running without it is no biggie. Bug#487496: findutils: wrong use of quotes in the error message
Package: findutils Version: 4.4.0-2 Severity: minor To reproduce, run this (stupid) command (the contents of the current directory don't matter): find . -name phc/\*.tex The output is: find: warning: Unix filenames usually don't contain slashes (though pathnames do). That means that '-name `phc/*.tex'' will probably evaluate to false all the time on this system. You might find the '-wholename' test more useful, or perhaps '-samefile'. Alternatively, if you are using GNU grep, you could use 'find ... -print0 | grep -FzZ `phc/*.tex''. However, the backtick has special meaning in bash, and thus should be replaced with a single quote in the second and the last lines of the error message. Bug#487475: xsane: Control/menu selection problem with epson backends via net driver [patch]
reassign 487475 libsane retitle 487475 libsane: net backend option descriptors handling incorrect, breaking SANE standard tags 487475 - patch merge 487475 307088 thanks Brad Sawatzky [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The problem occurs in xsane when accessing an epson/epkowa driver through the network backend. Trying to change options like binary/gray/color, resolutions, etc., in xsane results in a dialog box with 'Failed to set value of option mode: invalid argument'. Playing with various controls for a while (and dismissing the errors) eventually results in the problem fixing itself, after which xsane behaves normally. There are no problems when accessing the same driver directly (ie. xsane + epson backend on the same host). After checking the net backend code and the SANE standard, the bug is definitely not in XSane. XSane is correct in its assumption that option descriptors remain at the same memory location between the sane_open and sane_close calls. That being said, it's still a bit unclear how many bugs we are encountering here. The net backend only memcpy()s the option descriptors, so it's very possible that the various strings in the option descriptors end up at different memory addresses after a reload of the option descriptors. Why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, and why this happens pretty much only with the epson backends is not entirely clear, though part of that can be attributed to sheer luck. Now, I'm not entirely sure the epson backends are clear of bugs in their handling of the option descriptors. Unfortunately, while the opt structure is built once and is then stable on the remote (epson, epkowa, whatever) backend, that memory space is NOT stable with the net backend. The pointer returned by the 'opt = xsane_get_option_descriptor()' call in xsane.c seems to point to a general purpose memory buffer used by the sanei_* network routines used by the net backend. The above is only partly true. The net backend allocates memory for local option descriptors on its own, but then only memcpy()s the options descriptors, instead of performing an in-depth copy and duplicating the strings too. Thus the option descriptor itself is stable but its content is not, and the string pointers actually do point to memory allocated by sanei_wire, as you noted. I'm cooking up a test patch for the net backend for you to test, and cross-checking with SANE standard lawyers :) JB. -- Julien BLACHE - Debian GNU/Linux Developer - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Public key available on http://www.jblache.org - KeyID: F5D6 5169 GPG Fingerprint : 935A 79F1 C8B3 3521 FD62 7CC7 CD61 4FD7 F5D6 5169 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#487475: xsane: Control/menu selection problem with epson backends via net driver [patch]
On Sun, 22 Jun 2008, Julien BLACHE wrote: However I am a bit doubtful as to the origin of the bug. I'd expect the problem would manifest itself with other backends too. Yeah, I had though so too... AFAICT the opt pointer that xsane used was directed into a generic buffer that sanei_* used for its net traffic. In some circumstances the buffer would get 'refilled' with the same opt structure prior to menu_list[].label getting dereferenced so the right data would be at that location and everything would just work. However, if you use gdb to break on writes to the memory location stored during the initial menu_items[i].label = str_list[i]; line (in the unpatched xsane-front-gtk.c:xsane_option_menu_new() function) you should find that it gets overwritten regularly as data are transferred through the net backend. Bug#229357: Build-Options
Hi, On Sat, 21 Jun 2008, Felipe Sateler wrote: Attaching a version against current master (since this can't make it to lenny anyway). PS: an (N)ACK would be nice. We have received your patch. Your patch would be even better if it was complete: please update the documentation of dpkg-buildpackage accordingly. But I have some other remarks, see below. Last time we discussed this idea within the team, Frank wanted to handle it, but it's been a long time since we had this discussion. Frank, do you still have time/plans for this? +my $source = Dpkg::Control-new()-get_source(); +if (defined($source-{Build-Options}) ) { +# The build options are comma-separated, with optional spaces +my @build_options = split( / *, */, $source-{Build-Options} ); Please use \s*,\s*. +if( grep(/\bbuild-arch\b/, @build_options) $binaryonly eq -B) { Please match the keyword in its entirety: /^build-arch$/ + $buildtarget = build-arch; +} +} As we will probably add more Build-Options over time, we probably want to move this processing in a dedicated module... but we already have Dpkg::BuildOptions which handles DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS. I don't know if we want to put both in the same module or if we need to come up with a different name (or a sub-module maybe). The discussion in the bug log also suggest to use Standards-Version as a source of implicit build-options. If policy 4.0 mandates the build-arch target, then the simple fact that Standards-Version = 4.0 can be assumed as having Build-Options: build-arch. I like this idea and would like to see it implemented in this patch. AFAICT, msmtp is stripping the comments, and IMO it shouldn't. The -f option only sets the *envelope* from address, i.e. the address that is sent in the MAIL FROM command. Therefore it should be a mail address without additional information or comments. The From: header is completely independet of that; you cannot set it with -f. If a mail does not have a From: header, most MTAs will generate one using the envelope from address and the name of the user, but that is a different thing. Msmtp never generates a From: header; if you want one, you have to generate one yourself or let the MTA (that msmtp sends the mail to) do it. One could argue that msmtp should generate a From: header if it is missing, using the envelope from address and possibly the information of the -F option (if present), but I'm not sure if that is the right thing to do. Maybe that's better left to the real MTA. Martin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hmm, on second thought, it doesn't nail it down that clearly after all. It's actually OK to have this memory overwritten when the net backend is refreshing the option descriptors. What's not so much OK is that the net backend can refresh the option descriptors behind XSane's back in sane_control_option(). I think it shouldn't do that and just error out. But if the option descriptors are invalid (ie the backend told the frontend that it needed to reload the options after setting an option) at the start of sane_control_option() that's a bug in XSane that failed to acknowledge and act upon the backend's request to reload the option descriptors. Could you try to check if that matches what you're seeing? Other than that, I think the net backend does the right thing. It presents a local copy of the option descriptors to the frontend, providing a stable memory address for the option descriptors. Anything in the option descriptor can change after the backend tells the frontend to reload the options, and I think that's what you're seeing with gdb when the net backend refreshes the option descriptors. But the memory allocated by sanei_wire for the option descriptors and their content should not get overwritten unless there's been a call to sane_get_option_descriptor(). The code flow looks roughly like this: frontend calls sane_get_option_descriptor() for first option net backend loads option descriptors (fetch_options()) frontend calls sane_get_option_descriptor() a few more times to load all options frontend sets an option value by calling sane_control_option() net backend forwards to underlying backend underlying backend replies with info containing SANE_INFO_RELOAD_OPTIONS net backends marks local copy as invalid, forwards to frontend frontend calls sane_get_option_descriptor() for first option net backend loads option descriptors (fetch_options()) frontend calls sane_get_option_descriptor() a few more times to reload all the options Pity I don't have the hardware to reproduce this issue here. Now, two scenarios: - there's a bug somewhere and the memory allocated by sanei_wire gets overwritten for some reason, which shouldn't happen - there's a bug in XSane not acting upon SANE_INFO_RELOAD_OPTIONS Do you think you can try to determine which one is actually happening? Bug#487510: python-pam: Example code is incorrect
Package: python-pam Version: 0.4.2-10.4 Severity: normal Tags: patch The example code examples/pamtest.py is incorrect, it references the non-existent constants PAM.PAM_PROMPT_ERROR_MSG and PAM.PAM_PROMPT_TEXT_INFO. The correct names are PAM_ERROR_MSG and PAM_TEXT_INFO, respectively (without PROMPT). While this does not affect the example itself (the if-branch in question never runs), it causes hard to detect errors in application code that relies on this wrong example. This conversation function seems to somehow run in a plain-C context, so the usual Python error, 'module' object has no attribute 'foo' will not propagate to the user -- who is left scratching his head about inscrutable PAM conversation errors. Since this example file effectively is the only documentation available on the python-pam module, it would be nice if it were correct. ;-) The attached patch to fix the documentation is of course trivial, but might potentially save a lot of bug-hunting. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.9-023stab044.16-enterprise Locale: LANG=C, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages python-pam depends on: ii python2.4.4-2An interactive high-level object-o python-pam recommends no packages. -- no debconf information --- examples/pamtest.py~ 23:08:48.0 +0100 +++ examples/pamtest.py 2008-06-22 12:09:03.0 +0200 @@ -16,7 +16,7 @@ elif type == PAM.PAM_PROMPT_ECHO_OFF: val = getpass(query) resp.append((val, 0)) - elif type == PAM.PAM_PROMPT_ERROR_MSG or type == PAM.PAM_PROMPT_TEXT_INFO: + elif type == PAM.PAM_ERROR_MSG or type == PAM.PAM_TEXT_INFO: print query resp.append(('', 0)) else:

This is somewhat between a wishlist to add contrib packages and a bug since my page in some way suggests that the report is comprehensive which it's not, so I've chosen the 'minor' middle road. cheers, Thijs -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-6-686 Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages lintian depends on: ii binutils 2.17-3The GNU assembler, linker and bina ii diffstat 1.43-2produces graph of changes introduc ii dpkg-dev 1.13.25 package building tools for Debian ii file 4.17-5etch3 Determines file type using magic ii gettext0.16.1-1 GNU Internationalization utilities ii intltool-debian0.35.0+20060710.1 Help i18n of RFC822 compliant conf ii libparse-debianchangel 1.0-1 parse Debian changelogs and output ii man-db 2.4.3-6 The on-line manual pager ii perl [libdigest-md5-pe 5.8.8-7etch3 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction lintian recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#485426: pulseaudio doesn't start if using module-hal-detect
That's an odd thing. I've undone my changes in default.pa to reproduce the bug and now it works fine (except the realtime issue). But now i get following message twice: ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL front:0 ...Ok, i was able to locate the error. It was a missing asound.conf file in /etc. After removing this file and undoing all changes in default.pa i get the same error messages as mentioned in the bug report. With asound.conf available in /etc, the shipped default.pa works fine (except the mentioned output above). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#487518: packages.debian.org: 'current' changelog is most recent overall, not most recent in sid
Package: www.debian.org Severity: normal Hi, When I want to view the 'current' changelog of phpmyadmin, as linked from the PTS: http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/p/phpmyadmin/current/changelog I get the stable changelog while I expected the unstable one. The problem seems to be that the software that decides what is current always takes the very newest package version. Bug#487151: subversion 1.5.0 released
On Saturday 21 June 2008, Peter Samuelson wrote: Debian's default Java build environment, at least on most platforms, takes 'javac' from ecj (the Eclipse Java compiler from Sun) I hate to be pedantic, but ecj is from the Eclipse project, which not affiliated with Sun. and 'javah' from gcj (from gcc). The libsvn-java build process calls javah to generate some C++ header files to be used in the JNI. But gcj javah does not produce all the same filenames that Sun's javah produces. For example, given the source file: org/tigris/subversion/javahl/ConflictDescriptor.java Sun javac produces: org/tigris/subversion/javahl/ConflictDescriptor.class and from that, Sun javah produces: org_tigris_subversion_javahl_ConflictDescriptor.h org_tigris_subversion_javahl_ConflictDescriptor_Action.h org_tigris_subversion_javahl_ConflictDescriptor_Kind.h org_tigris_subversion_javahl_ConflictDescriptor_Reason.h However, the ecj version of javac produces four separate files, because there are some nested classes: org/tigris/subversion/javahl/ConflictDescriptor.class org/tigris/subversion/javahl/ConflictDescriptor$Action.class org/tigris/subversion/javahl/ConflictDescriptor$Kind.class org/tigris/subversion/javahl/ConflictDescriptor$Reason.class Huh? Sun javac somehow doesn't produce additional class files for nested classes?? Are you sure about that? That sounds very incorrect. and if you run javah from gcj on those: org_tigris_subversion_javahl_ConflictDescriptor.h org_tigris_subversion_javahl_ConflictDescriptor$Action.h org_tigris_subversion_javahl_ConflictDescriptor$Kind.h org_tigris_subversion_javahl_ConflictDescriptor$Reason.h Oh great. Perhaps you could write a script that renames generated header files containing $ in their name, replacing $ with _? Said script would probably have to search through the contents of those generated files, looking for instances of those filenames and rewriting them as well. I think some JNI headers #include each other, but I honestly don't remember. So, I have to work through the build scripts and source code to figure out how to reconcile this mess. And once I've done that, I still don't know if that is the only problem with the Java bindings. I certainly hope so. Please do let us know if you run into any more perplexing problems. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Bug#487523: RM: smssend -- RoQA; RC-buggy (license issues, not released with Etch), upstream dead, not maintained
Package: ftp.debian.org Severity: normal see subject. Also as the program relies on webpages and filling out forms there, I guess it is completely broken anyway. Thanks, Bernd -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
